S11.E6: Latin Roots
A.Ham replied to Yeah No's topic in Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr.
I watched this one in particular becuase of Maestro Rubén Blades. I have always really enjoyed his music in addition to admiring him as a human being. Watching him discover that he was the grandson of Ricardo Miró was something else. I am not Panamanian, but when they mentioned that one of Ricardo's most famous poems was Patria (homeland)... absolute Goosebumps. Rubén also wrote a famous song named Patria that I love. Had to go listen to it right away, heart swollen. Representation matters. -
So I just caught up with this and yes, she got what she deserved. She met him as an F-boy, was warned by Tyler about him, watched him kiss a client, but still dropped trou and pursued a relationship with him. Instead of simply letting Nick know she wanted to take it slow. Maybe I am biased because it could see it from a mile away, including the partnership going to Jeff, so I was team Nick. Oh, well. I don’t see this ever got a second season so that is where it stays.

The first show I thought I would be rooting for Joey but Chandler has fully won me over and she would be my pick to win. I also prefer Brandon's choreo to Val's. I wouldn't be able to point out reasons why I would find Brandon's choreo sub-par, so I do not get the criticism--I felt the same way with Lele last season, she should definitely have made it further. I just connect to his work, I suppose. But maybe I am an outlier, I do tend to like ringers and have no issue with people with dance experience. I have rooted for non-ringers as well throughout the years, but if someone wants me to watch a dancing show, I need to see good dancing, not just amateurs.

I found that scene to be… Unhygienic. I don’t want to rewatch, but I’m pretty sure she got up without cleaning herself. And then she barely grazed her fingers in the water for a second, no soap. I get that they probably wanted to skip showing us her hoo-ha, but no proper handwashing? Between her hair looking unwashed and unbrushed, and the deodorant check last season, she plays a bit fast and loose with personal hygiene.

Right? Someone needs to make a gif of Keri Russell's reaction at the beginning of the episode, when her character learned that the president wasn't aware of the VP's involvement in the explosion. Her WTF exclamation was perfect. And similar to the reaction I had at the end of the show.
-
A good reason to rewatch! I did, and you may be right in that they were going for comic effect. I wouldn't necessarily call them ugly, but then again the older I get, the less interested in looks I become. It was one of those scenes to set the tone with a certain level of absurdity. I mean, one of the moms said that her daughter was getting over shingles. Like, why would you say that in public?
-
Wait, what? I don't notice a significant difference (or even an insignificant difference) in the actress' level of attractiveness. They are hollywood actresses and have hollywood looks, and for some of them that affords them the hollywood lifestyle, which allows them to have more resources dedicated to their looks... but I wouldn't draw a particular line on beauty. Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder and subjective. But I would find it less than likely that it would be a purposeful move on the part of the producers.

I found her to be stiff as an ironing board... havent watched any of the others to have an opinion.

I really loved this and am surprised this isn't getting more traffic here. I like the quick-witted banter and the show has a feeling of "realness" to it as well that I like. I have to admit to having binged it and will probably re-watch as well, which is not something I tend to do.

Yup, I had tears streaming down my face several times. Then again, I can be a softie. I still slightly resent what they did to Melendez (yes, it's been years, I know). And then Asher most recently. But I did like the finale, so much so that I rewatched it today and yup, tears again. My best wishes to everyone involved with the show.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
A.Ham replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
A couple of years ago, my brother and his wife gifted my then 74 year old mother a pajama set for Christmas. It was one gift of many, but it was a set that you could “combine”. The way I cackled when we opened the gift after getting home to find booty shorts for her. She absolutely wanted to wear them in the middle of the winter. I ended up stashing them away and found them last week as we are preparing to move. So she is enjoying them again, lol. -
Yup, my only involvement with the show post auditions (and there was a LOT of fast forwarding on those) is really only reading these forums. Not interested in this dance/big brother mashup. In my eyes the show could benefit from the couples format and focusing on the dancing only. I would even love to see new dance styles introduced, but alas... this is what the producers came up with.

Right? At some point I heard that there were 4 bedrooms upstairs, no reason to inconvenience anyone unless one of those was being used for another purpose. A 12 year old sleeping in the same bed as dad though? Creepy no matter how you slice it.
-
Yup, me too. I thought "you're not actually going to believe they're going to go away so quietly". They had already started with vandalism. Time to call the police just for that.

I really thought the actress was a Maggie Q doppelganger.

So I know I mentioned last week that I had felt sorry for Xochitl for a minute there but that did not change my voting for Jason. She was probably getting the votes all along then. I mean, I’m not completely mad at the results but I guess out of the women she was a worthy winner. I did like her dances, except the samba. I remember watching her intro package and thinking based solely on her practice that she wouldn’t make it long, but then she surprised me with a solid Cha Cha. i did have to laugh a Milo’s “let me know how it feels” comment,

Both of which were my favorites to win and not just be third place / runners up. Mya lost to Donny Osmond, whom I did not connect with, but he had enough voters that did, apparently, in that season. Normani placed third to David Ross, which was shocking to me; Rashad Jennings, the winner that season, was in my opinion not as technically good as Normani, but he clearly had more people voting for him and he had charisma as well. And he had the football background which seems to be a positive for the fans of this show.
-
So I am not an ardent voter of this show... I did not get into voting until I perceived Lele to be in danger and that was the night she was voted off. This past week I threw votes Jason's way because I the scoring wasn't going his way and then crossed my fingers that my voting wasn't going to turn out like Lele's and I would be the kiss of death for my favorites. I was very happy he was safe. And then I must be feeling really sensitive because seeing Xochitl's face about to burst into tears made me feel bad for her and made me wish I had thrown some votes her way... I don't love a 5 person finale but I was glad Xochitl was spared. I am just curious who is actually getting the votes.

Not sure why I am even spending time watching this, pretty sure I am hate-watching at this point. The lead characters are either insufferable or being humiliated. Ugh indeed.

S32.E09: A Celebration of Taylor Swift
A.Ham replied to CheshireCat's topic in Dancing With The Stars
Ah, gotcha. I usually fast forward through anything that is not dancing (that makes it a 20-30 minute show) but last night I started watching earlier than usual so I could not fast forward as much... So, camera hog it is then. Me too. They were great but did not even win in their category, which I was not pleased with; particularly because the couple they lost to were less than impressive. -

I caught him smelling his armpits twice during Xochitl’s interview with Julianne. Well, my mom was the one to first see it and she was cracking up. No sure if he was purposely camera hogging or what, but there he was. -

Justice delayed, but justice nonetheless. -

Ok, I thought I was the only one. -
Right? At some point they would have gotten a sizeable bill. There's no accounting department (or even person) at Hastings?
