  1. Jimmy -- Samhain is pronounced SOW-en. Guessing you learned the word from reading it, and never heard anyone say it (correctly).
  2. Are there detailed summaries of MS episodes somewhere? I couldn't watch Sunday, and don't have a recorder or any of the pay-to-view arrangements. The CBS site used to play episodes pretty well, but now it won't show me anything but commercials for walnuts (which I dislike). I'd like to find a better way to see occasional episodes later, or at least summaries. Help please?
  3. People do have different expectations. Zoe might feel insulted if she stayed with a black family who didn't have a satin pillow case for her. Once I was on a bus and two men sat behind me. One complained about a house guest who "took a shower and didn't even have the decency to wipe the water off the shower walls with a towel." The other man said something noncommittal. If I ever stay with someone who expects that, I hope they tell me.
  4. A voice can be changed, at least a little. Long ago I heard a recording of my voice and thought it was too high pitched, so I started making a conscious effort to speak in a lower register. It has become a habit now, although I need to remind myself when I get excited.
  5. Not getting what was involved in making Howard's "Sheldon" costume. Two T-shirts, which he may have already had. Maybe Bernadette helped Howard make his hair look like Sheldon's but I don't see any other difficulty. Raj apparently said his own costume was "not Ruth Bader Ginsberg, but ______ Beder Ginsberg." Did he say that, and if he did, what was the missing word? I liked how well he and Anu were getting along.
  6. Minding the store? What was Amy's costume, the purple dress with the corset? Marie Curie?
  7. Mark Twain came and went with Halley's Comet, as he predicted. He died in 1910, a year the comet put on a particularly good show.
  8. I don't know much about IVF or depression, but why couldn't Toby start taking his meds again as soon as he gave his sample? The time from then to a confirmed pregnancy must have been weeks at least.
  9. Sorry, I meant to say teaching music to children *well* and showing she loves music and children enough that she doesn't complain while she is teaching. But that Kate would be a totally different character.
  10. Same here, including the piano solo but not Ravel's orchestration. I prefer Gortchakov's orchestration, which sounds more Russian. [/snob] If we are doing Jeopardy! tourism, there is a restaurant called Grendel's Den near Harvard.
  11. Kate, I will *not* let you ruin the Star Trek: Next Generation episode with Picard and the flute for me. I wish Kate were teaching music to children, or doing something else that could help some of us believe that music and/or children are so important to her.
  12. Writing teachers may use this line as an example of an "expository lump" for many years.
  13. As soon as I saw the category, I said, "Shit." You mean "Merde," non? The way they write "funny" clues, "Old English" might have meant anything "before their time" so I was glad it was really "Old."
  14. If medical didn't work, there were other ways. I met a man who enlisted in the Coast Guard and volunteered for icebreaker duty.
  15. ABC is re-broadcasting the pilot tonight at 10 PM Eastern etc.
  16. Clyde is on vacation and sent us a photo.
  17. Lee Lofland (cop and writer) reviewed the pilot.
  18. People have pointed out medical errors in several episode threads. Is this show the typical case of "we have medical advisors but we ignore their comments because we want to make the story more interesting"? Real medicine can be very interesting, and errors lower my opinion of a show.
  19. Most people I hear do not pronounce the L in salmon, but do in salmonella, and in the name Salman (e.g. Rushdie). (Is the name Salman related to Solomon?)
  20. 4/5. On the geography question, I got stuck in Scandinavia.
  21. Maybe someone should found a Scouts organization for seniors. I learned this at camp long ago: Indicate the route to my habitual abode. I am fatigued and I desire to retire. I had an alcoholic bev'rage sixty minutes ago, And it affected my cerebellum. Wherever my peregrinations shall lead me, Terra firms or the salt sea air, I am constantly audibly chanting this melody, Indicate the route to my habitual abode.
  22. Having seen a lot of the old show, I'm liking this well enough. But what was the big deal with the guy's three shirts? Is this based on some real person? I don't have cable so I haven't seen many of the people they have mentioned.
  23. FJ: Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto. Tombaugh Regio is Pluto's heart-shaped feature.
