House Hunters International - General Discussion
Grrarrggh replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in House Hunters International
I taught for 6 years and have a career in education and I'd go nuts trying to homeschool one kid in a palace lol. -
They had to find him first. And it's a bit hard to look for a "Russian speaker" in a large room full of Russian speakers lol.
-
I liked the NJ couple, quite funny. That first house was wonderfully updated. I wonder how much they'll have to spend on flood insurance?
-
Nice "twist" with the Chechens in the last episode. It seems like the older FBI guy who recruited OA has fallen into the rut that parents who coach their children do. In trying to prove that he's not biased he treats them worse than he would otherwise.
-
I'm thinking at this point it doesn't matter who's involved. The houses still look alike at the end.
-
Really? Aside from the first what was beautiful about them? White/grey flip/new build boxes churned out by the thousands with no thought or design. Nothing special imo, let alone "absolutely beautiful".
-
Anyone have guesses at how old each person in the Decatur GA couple was? Or any proof? We have a bit of a bet going on lol. What ugly new builds. She annoyed me, but I automatically dislike anyone who thinks those houses are stylish.

Well, there's the old saying about the cobblers' children have no shoes.... it extends to all careers I guess.

Really? I hope she does. I rode my bike all the time around the neighbourhood as a 12-year-old, would still swing on the swings etc. 12 is still so young! I hated the husband in the Hague episode. His wife sounded like a Stepford automaton, the way he described her. All she does is cook and send the children to school. Yikes. I knew she was going to give in to being the mother martyr. -
It makes him a boring person to read about, as all fully bad or fully good people are. And no, saving Harry's life a few times does not make him good. Harry was only "saved" by plot devices, not character buildup. As I said, I think too many people are almost hypnotised into believing if someone is given the label "anti-hero" they're automatically interesting. Snape was one of the most boring, sloppily written characters in the series. Kreacher was 10x more complicated.
-
Gorgeous? Really? It looked like nearly every flipped kitchen out there.
-
Complicated? Seriously? He's about as straight forward as a stick. Too many readers seem to think anyone not nice is complicated and interesting. They're not, especially not Snape. He's a cruel, obsessive. And a bad spy on top of it all! Not a single HP character surprised me. Not a one.
-
True, though sadly he doesn't get much page time. So that's one out of what, 200 characters? ;)

Getting? -
Re-reading Born to Rule: Five Reigning Consorts, Granddaughters of Queen Victoria by Julia P. Gelardi. Absolutely amazing women, especially Marie of Romania and Ena of Spain.
-
Seriously?? If there is anyone who deserves to live through a school shooting and lose someone they love.... Ick. That book won't be on my reading list. You should write the author and ask them about it.
-
Who? (and please do not say Snape, he's such a shallow, badly written character; not to mention a crap spy who only did anything through plot amour)
-
Then again, no metal bikinis for the Wheel of Time women yet they managed to be sexualized the hell out of. I think I would have liked it the other way around....

Ugliest House In America - General Discussion
Grrarrggh replied to LittleIggy's topic in Ugliest House In America
They were more interesting houses than ugly ones. A few of those places I'd happily live in with only a minor bit of updating/cleaning. HGTV could easily do a few specials a year touring places like them. Better than flipping brothers. -
Agree. A designer trying to force something on me would only serve to get them sacked tout suite. I don't want a trendy house, I want a house that looks good to me.
-
That second house was maybe the first house I've every seen on HGTV that actually fits the definition of "modern farmhouse". The moment the exterior came on the screen my husband I and screamed "MODERN FARMHOUSE!!!!!" (and then we said jinx lol).
-
His Wheel of Time covers definitely say "fantasy"!! Only in fantasy could a human body look like that lol.
-
It only hit me about a year ago when I tried to read the series again. It had been about a decade since I'd really given it much thought and it just seemed incredibly obvious all of a sudden that Rowling doesn't care at all about characters. She wrote scenes she liked or thought were "adventurous" then jammed in these static, cardboardy people whether they would fit or not. It's why I infinitely prefer HP fanfic to the original.
-
Really? I personally want my house to not look like the rest of the street. No cookie-cutter subdivisions for me please.
-
That's because she wrote scenes not characters.
