Regarding Lauer, I was actually shocked by the coda or some blurb from the 4th episode that there were accusations that NBC News was trying to squash the Weinstein investigation in order to hide what Lauer was doing. I think that’s the first time I’ve heard that. At least Andy Lack is no longer head of NBC News. Every NBC News executive who claimed Farrow didn’t have enough of the story to publish should have been out on their ear and I don’t know who has been besides Lack. That was just a terrible sense of collective judgement

I guess I hadn't been paying much attention to Tammy the detective because I totally missed she was into Patty and had asked her out, though I finally realized what was going on in their last scene just before Patty kissed her. I did think it was weird that Tammy kept coming back to question her and had taken her to some police function. I too think she's trying to catch Patty with her questions Kevin going back and forth between his two birthday dinners was wild. The guest athletes was definitely something sitcoms do. Even if I still think this show is weird and I'm still not sure how I feel about it, I'm impressed with the set design and thoughtfulness that went into it

Pretty good episodes this week. I think hearing from the actual people involved in their own words is pretty eye opening and painful and brings the whole subject into sharper focus than if you just read the reporting and the quotes

I forgot to note that the Britney Spears doc got a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Documentary. Also the doc filmmakers were interviewed by the Hollywood Reporter, which was posted today. Among other things, Britney apparently has been trying to get out of the conservatorship for several years now according to confidential documents they got a hold of, plus they are thinking about doing a followup. The first episode starts with the purported founding and early years of the city, but it doesn’t sit well with me that they are presenting it more as fact than legend, given it tells the story of David vs Goliath, David as King, and his son King Solomon. Though I guess if you are telling the story of a very old city, it’s probably helpful to start near the beginning even though that mostly exists in legend and stories, especially if a large part of the conflicts pertaining to the city hark back to ancient times and what people believe happened

Given I could barely get through Mike's death last year because my mother had just passed (and then my dad passed 4 months later), I don't think I'm going to sit through another weepy death plus I don't care about the Nixon Falls storyline anyway, though I do like Phyllis in general

The Al Davis doc was pretty interesting. I think I was aware of him back when he owned the Raiders, but I didn't know all the details. That Deepfake technology they used was pretty weird and indeed looked pretty fake, so it was kind of unsettling.

For discussion of the PBS POV series of documentaries POV has had a couple of interesting docs so far this month. The first one, "The Neutral Ground", broadcast on July 5, takes a look at the controversy of Confederate monuments by comic CJ Hunt. I have not finished that yet, but it's pretty interesting. The second, "Landfall", broadcast on July 12, looks at Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria hit and the capitalism vultures that descend and the residents have to take care of themselves when the government doesn't seem to be able to act. Some pretty eye-opening stuff and your heart go out to the people who suffer Some interesting docs upcoming this month: "Stateless" (July 19) looks at the tensions between Haiti and the Dominican Republic; "Mayor" (Jul 26) profiles the mayor of Ramallah in the West Bank of Palestine August: "Pier Kids" (Aug 2) profiles Black homeless queer and trans youth hanging out at Christopher Street, NYC for safety

In an update on the various points the Britney Spears doc raised, Britney has been allowed 2 hearings in court and she objected to the conservatorship and her dad's involvement and said she was being used and abused by nearly everyone in the conservatorship, most especially her dad. Various entities, including the Bessemer Trust, have resigned and Britney has been allowed to hire her own lawyer, who has started working on the case. Needless to say, her dad has denied any abuse from himself

I'm such an average cook and was never particularly interested in cooking competition shows until the pandemic got me to work on my cooking and baking skills, so this show mesmerizes me. I would never get any of these desserts even with a ton of clues; I just don't have that much experience in baking. This week's episode seemed particularly hard

Controversial take: I’m kind of digging Roger’s low-key gentle take as Austin. I didn’t really like him that much as Franco. I continue to be annoyed that GH allows some of its actors to keep returning as different characters I’m glad Maxie told Nina the truth and that Nina fully believed her and supported her
