Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads
frenchtoast replied to Lola16's topic in Commercials
Pediatricians do not recommend children with fevers to take aspirin. From the article: "Aspirin should not be used to treat acute febrile viral illness in children. (Strength of Recommendation [sOR]: C, based on case-control studies). Although no causal link has been proven, data from case-control and historic cohort studies demonstrate an association between aspirin use and Reye syndrome. The risk of Reye syndrome decreases with age, becoming extremely rare by the late teenage years. Other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are effective antipyretics and are not associated with the constellation of symptoms seen in Reye syndrome, which includes nausea, vomiting, headache, excitability, delirium, combativeness, and coma. Aspirin use in children younger than 19 years should be limited to diseases in which aspirin has a proven benefit, such as Kawasaki disease and the juvenile arthritides. (SOR: C, based on expert opinion)." Also, the American Academy of Pediatrics : "Never give aspirin to your child unless your child's doctor tells you it's safe. Aspirin can cause a very serious liver disease called Reye syndrome. This is especially true when given to children with the flu or chickenpox." I was born in 1975 and I remember my mom making that switch. Just like babies used to sleep on their stomachs and now the recommendation is to not do so. (I did not listen to my pediatrician and both my kids slept on their stomachs because I wanted to them actually sleep. But I know it's recommended.) Doctors learn things and apply it and the world changes. The name baby aspirin to refer to a low dose is confusing, but I have not been able to even find aspirin among the children fever reducers--only acetaminophen and ibuprofen. I have seen some commercials from Bayer trying to persuade people to use aspirin again. It would be better if they were clearer, no doubt. -
I thought he punched Sherlock in the stomach because he was angry with Sherlock for behaving above the law and torturing Moran. He felt betrayed by Sherlock and was angry with himself that he still wanted to work with Sherlock and it all came out in that punch. It is entirely possible I read waaay too much into that scene.

I had a burger with egg and bacon at Red Robin a few months ago. It was good, but not my favorite. Beets and pineapple would be a deal breaker for me, beets especially. So, we had our Thanksgiving dinner today to help with schedules. It was very yummy--adding sour cream to mashed potatoes made quite the difference. So good. The butter and milk didn't hurt, either. Because we were a small group, it was just a breast, though we got some drumsticks and thighs for me since I like dark meat. But I only made one dessert--a gluten free pumpkin cake bar--since I don't like pumpkin pie and my mom does. Well, she likes pumpkin roll, but this was easier to make and very yummy. Even if I didn't put raisins or walnuts in the cake, just the ginger. But I missed having apple crisp. The best part of Thanksgiving is the sandwich made later.

I should probably specify this was about 7 or 8 years ago, so it's not exactly recent. I should have said "...go to the emergency room as it got bad over a weekend" and not "the weekend". Ooops--articles don't usually cause me problems. The antibiotic took a while to be administered, though. I want to say at least a half hour, if not an hour.

I had cellulitis on my face and had to go to the emergency room as it got bad over the weekend. (Didn't know what it was, kept hoping it would get better and kept getting worse so the the ER we went.) They gave me IV antibiotics and told me to come back for next dose. When I returned I felt so terrible and had a fever and was admitted to the hospital for two days (admitted Sunday night went home Wednesday). My son was in Kindergarten and my daughter was little and I was (and am) a stay at home mom. It really threw everything out of whack not having me home taking care of everything. The reason they admitted me is because cellulitis on the face is super scary since it can easily be transmitted to the brain. Not that I mean to worry you, but we kept that from my mom who was already panicked. So, yeah, it's definitely something to be taken seriously. But long term, I've been fine. It's my understanding that it makes me more susceptible to more cellulitis infections. On the plus side, when the admitted me, they gave me morphine.

There may have been a heavy sigh when Tony says, "So was I." It is going to be so hard so hard to watch because neither of them is entirely wrong. I will admit to feeling bad for Tony--after seeing him in Ultron try so hard and make things worse. But he's trying to be as "good" as Steve in his way and it just keeps literally blowing up in his face. On top of what's going on on SHIELD, it's just so sad. I'm still not over the Lash reveal and what May is going through. Wow, it seems so depressing but it's not. Just a lot of feels.

That sounds like the most awesome day ever! We pushed our TG meal to Sunday (not realizing that MA stores are closed on Thanksgiving so my mom, who is a cashier at WalMart actually has the day off and can watch her beloved Packers take on the Bears). So, I'm here, hanging out, catching up on The Last Kingdom, trying my darnedest to remember what happened in the books. And later, I'll be watching Captain America Winter Solider since the trailer for Civil War was just released and then, for giggles, maybe watch Ant Man. I love this time of year. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Even those not necessarily celebrating. For those finding this time of year of difficult, I hope you find comfort and peace. And may the memory of your loved ones become a source of solace. {{{Hugs}}}

Whore is a slut shaming word. Do not use it here. Do not argue about why it's considered slut shaming. Also, being snippy and calling posters names, definitely not acceptable. Warnings or locking the topics/forum are next. It's a holiday and you all know better. I can't believe I have to make that announcement on Thanksgiving morning. -
Reason #500 why I will most likely never visit Australia. Just sayin. EXACTLY!

I'm not particularly fond of pumpkin pie (though with mounds of whipped cream it's ok) and pecan pie makes my teeth hurt thinking about it, so I've always gravitated toward the apple crisp. This year, we're doing Thanksgiving on Sunday since we had planned on my mom working on TG and hubby is going to to NY to see his family for TG. As it turns out, she's not working, so mom and I (and brother probably) will be hanging out on Thursday but without the big meal--probably just a real relaxing day. On Sunday we'll do the grand get together with all the fixins'. Having said that, I'm not making pumpkin pie--I'll make something pumpkiny just not pie. I saw a recipe for individual pumpkin cheesecake cups and that might be the winner. And some apple crisp and it's all good. But the mashed potatoes are all for me.

Leighrhoda, I would definitely look into getting a behaviorist and working with Rosie. Because be they kids or dogs, they can still not let past abuse dictate their behavior today. It may not happen overnight, but it's not fair for poor Rosie to be stuck always anxious and looking for abuse. I think a behaviorist would help you and your sister lead Rosie to a happier and content life. Whatever happened in the past, happened. What you can influence and take hold of is what is happening now and the future. Anyway, that's my two cents. We adopted two greyhounds. One of them is nippy which is NOT OK. We'll be calling a trainer so we can learn how to teach him that behavior is not ok. We've them approximately one month and not matter what their life was on the track or in their kennels, they are living in a home now. They are learning the routine but we have to help them learn. And that is going to mean training. It may mean a behaviorist. But I think as their guardian, I owe it to them to use whatever tools are available to me to make their lives better.

Go to imgur.com, in upper left corner click on blue button that says Upload Images. If it's a file on your computer, you can choose browse. Or you can copy and choose the paste. I've never tried the drag and drop. Then click on start upload (bottom right of the box). It will allow you to edit a little and on the right hand side there will be a list of ways to "share" the image. Choose the BBCode (forums)--click on what looks like two pieces of paper to copy the link. Then just paste (no need for code or buttons) in PTV reply box. I hope that helps!

I love Elementary. It's right up there with Jeremy Brett/Granada Sherlock Holmes. Love it far more than the BBC version. Not only is the friendship of Joan and Sherlock a thing of beauty rarely seen on tv, I also really appreciate how they portray addiction and recovery also rarely seen on tv. The first few episodes are clunky, but it picks up and maintains. AoS is a fun show, and it has greatly improved. You might need to watch the two Captain America movies, but the second one, Winter Soldier, is an excellent movie. The first is one is good and fun, too. We watch both Sleepy Hollow and Grimm and enjoy both. If you like Vikings, The Last Kingdom which is based on a series of books that are pretty fun, is a good show too. It's told from the English (kind of) point of view. The books aren't great literature, but they're a good, fun read.

Posters come and posters go. GEML hasn't been around in a few months. I won't torture you with singing, but now I've got The Circle of Life stuck in my head.

The point is to not discuss politics/policies etc here as it is bound to create bad feelings. Please don't. Posts will be deleted as this a forum wide guideline. Also that's not a funny joke, and I find it rather offensive. I'm hoping that wasn't the point.

That's the last time I ever use visuals to help anyone out. ;)

Please keep topic to discussion and explanation of various theologies and definitely not politics or politicians.

Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Topic, please. Not the place to discuss wind speed, vomiting or politics. Please stick to Josh and Anna. -
I think the issue is the larger decades long problem of wages/salaries have stagnated, employees are working longer hours, not taking vacation and getting paid less. So it's not so much that I feel bad for one guy in one situation. I feel bad for all the people that have been working hard and get less. At this point, what is the incentive to work hard? Especially when a cut in employees wages go to fund a golden parachute. But hey, at least you have a job. But that inspirational story of "If you work hard, you too can be "succeed" " Yeah, that's only for those that have rigged the game.

Ha! My stepdad's birthday is Jan 4 and a good friend of mine is Jan 2. We had a January birthday celebration for my stepdad, my grandpa (Jan 14) and another family friend in January. And included my birthday, Feb 1. I like my birthday, despite the bad weather. It was close enough to the holidays that if I didn't get something for Christmas I might get it for birthday. And now, as an adult where it's not a big deal, my birthday is around the Superbowl, so it's a lot of fun now. Hee! We just got two greyhounds and man are they good at tripping us up.

I will never, ever shop on Thanksgiving. And the only time you'll see shopping on Black Friday is late in the evening to maybe get out of the house, but...nope, not going to do that either. I hate that stores are open on that day. HAAAATE. (Though I would be profoundly grateful for a grocery store to be open should I run out of something.) We thought my mom, who is a cashier at WalMart (and making $15/hr, but she's been there 10+ years) would have to work on Thanksgiving. Apparently, the labor laws in MA mean that WalMart will not be open on Thanksgiving. But, hubby had already planned to take the kids to NY for TG and we would celebrate on Sunday. So, depending on what is happening with my brother's surgery, mom and I will be eating lobster, shrimp and other snacks while watching football and movies on Thanksgiving. Sounds good to me!! And then on Sunday the big family meal.
