  1. Ahh, I misunderstood. Yeah, but then, she wasn't in really good care. Way back when, when midwives were pretty much the only option, they had loads of experience and passed down that knowledge. Nowadays, a good midwife with not only experience but current medical knowledge, is a great thing. But I don't think Jessa was getting that. And I think she was operating under the idea that it's ok to go out during early labor. Which, yeah, but that's for a few hours, not 24. And...I had been seeing my OB on the regular, I knew how things were progressing. And it was my second.
  2. When I was in early labor with my second, I went out to dinner with hubby and our 3 year old. We knew we had time before things got real serious. Many of the programs I went to prior to birth strongly urged staying home during early labor. So, we ate, got son to bed, called our family member to stay the night and then called the hospital. I gave birth in the early morning and hubby was able to get home before son was awawake. It all worked out really well. I will say that my water didn't break--she was born, as the OB put it, behind the veil. So the sac ruptured when she was being delivered. (The doc and nurses kept asking, and they tried to rupture the membranes, but she was already too far down by that point and they couldn't OB poking with the big hook, "There's something hard there." Yeah, her head!) NextIteration, FWIW, I think it was the right decision to encourage your daughter to stay and participate in the performance. It's something she loves, and she's surrounded (I assume) by people who will support her as well. I would imagine her grandmother would have wanted her to continue.
  3. I like switching out the vinyl tablecloth and the artificial flowers that I have around to match the seasons. We definitely decorate a little outside for Halloween and Christmas. I put out a cornucopia type door thing that says welcome and something different for Christmas. But it's not something that would be noticed or missed it's just something nice. I definitely decorate for Christmas, though. Not for Easter all that much, but the fake flowers are tulips as opposed to the roses for summer and the chrysanthemums for fall. Not huge, but a freshen up.
  4. Because it's a Law & Order episode, not a Duggar episode. The Duggars may have been mentioned, and it may have been inspired by, but discussion about a show's episode belongs in that show's forums. Many of the L&O (all flavors) are ripped from the headlines, and it's discussed in the L&O forums.
  5. No, but when an editorial story gets "merged" with it, it does something screwy. No worries! I think this should work.
  6. This is the Commercials forum, not the let's discuss various political hot points forum. There are plenty of annoying commercials out there to talk about rather than straying into spats.
  7. I watched Up in the the theater with my kids. Trying my damnedest not to sob outright. And Toy Story 3--in theater with kids. And when Woody and Co. were headed to the incinerator all I could think of, "Pixar wouldn't make me have to explain that, would they?" I walked in to Toy Story 2 during "When She Loved Me" was on and my daughter asked me what the song was about and I'm not really holding it together trying to say that she's sad because her little girl gave her up. We have yet to see Inside Out. I've heard that was quite the tear jerker too.
  8. Folks, just a quick reminder, please discuss the Law & Order SVU episode in its own forum, here.
  9. Folks, this subject of the Crane/Abbie friendship seems to really become heated. Please remember when posting to make it about the show and not about people/You/posters. There is no requirement that we all come to an agreement. A few posts have been edited, but if it continues we will have to just delete.
  10. I like seeing the older teens out trick or treating. They are generally polite and just having a good time with their friends. I don't begrudge them holding onto to childhood as long as they can. My guy is 13 and his voice has already dropped, but I could hear him laughing and having fun with his friends and seeing the neighbors. He's not being obnoxious, he's just joining in the fun. They're not taking anything away from the younger kids, and many times I've heard the older kids praise and encourage the younger kids. A piece of candy seems a small price to pay for them to have some good memories.
  11. There are some kids that get driven, but I live in the 'burbs, so it's easy enough to park and wander in the neighborhoods. Daughter (9) changed her mind days before Halloween and decided against Athena and wanted Hermione instead. Ooookaaay. Took a while and a burn or two to curl her hair to make it bushy. Son (13) whose voice is quite deep and a bit of mustache fuzz went trick or treating as Homer Simpson. Most kids said Trick or Treat, but I was usually at the door distributing before they had the chance. All the kids were lovely, though I'm sure some forgot to say thank you. I was saying Happy Halloween as I was giving the candy so I may not have heard. The only family that annoyed me was a young couple with their infant, not more than 3 months. Baby's first Halloween, they said. WTF? Really? That's...so not cool. If it's in a group and there are other kids, I don't mind that. But it was just two adults and a baby in a sling. That irked me but otherwise it was a fun night. Daughter went trick or treating in a different neighborhood with a friend and got, I kid not, Jesus Harvest Seeds or as everyone else calls them, candy corn. She was a bit perplexed. I will admit I immediately thought of this forum. She also got a can of soda, which...WTF? And one of those small, individual boxes of cereal. Oooookaaay. I will be tossing that candy by Easter.
  12. As far as I remember, there's not anything about Mildrith and Alfred in the books. There's a lot about Uhtred and how he sees how he was forced into not such a great situation and how he doesn't really relate well to the folks and Mildrith. The books are not great literature, but they tell a good story and are a fun read. Beocca is different in the books look--he's physically weaker and a bit whinier and excitable. There are also some interesting men and women that are great that we haven't met yet in the show.
  13. So, a small compare contrast--I'm loving Show!Alfred so much more than Book!Alfred. Show!Alfred feels more commanding, and I'm thinking it's because we're seeing him more objectively rather than being described by Uhtred. And as much as they've made about reading/writing, I hope they keep in how Alfred made Uhtred learn to read and write. Also the mention of ships, I'd like to see that, too, but that's another book. I hope that the series gets good ratings and they do series of the other books, too. On the flip side, I find Young Ragnar to be not as joyful, but we just got to see him so maybe that will change.
  14. In general I vehemently dislike pranks because their sole purpose is to embarrass someone, be they adult or child. It's something that I've stressed to my kids to be kind and understanding and that pranking someone is basically the opposite of that. It's putting your enjoyment and hilarity above the feelings of someone else, that you derive pleasure from someone else's discomfort and I can't abide that. So I would fall on the it is never, ever ok to prank a child. Ever.
  15. Ugh, right at the beginning when the man jumps in the pool and starts squirting water at the woman? The phrase "Your assholishness is showing" is yelled at the tv.
  16. My son is around Labor Day, too. (He was born the day before) But it's always a nice way for his friends to have a last hurrah before school. It's still a birthday party, it just works out real well. My daughter, OTOH, is 4 days before Christmas and try as I might, it still ends up being lost somewhat in the planning. Her friends are too busy for a party, I don't make a cake because I'm in the midst of holiday baking and cooking and the weather tends to be crappy. Even so, we buy her a cake (and the kids have the leftovers at Christmas because not all of them are fans of desserts, though everyone devours the truffles), get her birthday presents wrapped in birthday paper, and do something for her birthday--go to a movie, take her out. This year (she turns 10) she's decided she wants to go to the American Girl Doll store with a friend and do the whole shebang--style the doll's hair, get lunch and just have a fun day. My birthday (and hubby's too) is in February. So, crappy weather but not around any holidays. In fact, hubby's is right around President's weekend. Mine is closer to the Superbowl which is freaking awesome. This year, it was my 40th and the Pats won, so it was a pretty dang good day.
  17. Let's remember that abortion itself is not on topic in ANY of the topics in this forum or this site. It leads to acrimonious and vitriolic posting. If this is a dinner party, like politics, it's the topic to avoid. There are 3,682,582,046 other sites out there to engage in that debate. All of which to say, no more talk about abortion, politics, ISIS because off topic and bound to start fights. Posts will be deleted without notification since this is not the first (or 5th) time that we've had to say this.
  18. *Shakes head* *Looks at the little birdies* *Furrows brow* I thought this was the Josh and Anna topic. I'm all confused about how the conversation is not about Josh, Anna, and the Ms. Can we please move back to Josh and Anna? Thanks!
  19. I finally saw this with the now 13 year old son. I can't believe they brought up the implant chips--I barely remember that episode from Clone Wars. Was it with one of that groups of clones that was sort of followed (and the members kept getting killed? Fives, Heavy, Six etc). With the, as son said, Giraffe necked freaks from Camino. Wasn't Wolf Plo Koon's lieutenant? Which makes me wonder if Rex knows what happened with Anakin. That would be tough. Kudos to showing the aftermath for those clones. Especially since we occasionally got stories about what the war (and loss) meant to the Clones. And just goes to show what the clones got out of it. Nothing. The Clone Wars and this episode really helped cement how much the Jedi and Clones were betrayed and destroyed. And that it is really, really difficult to come back from that. That being said, I could have totally done without the Zeb as bait part. Dragged on for too long, though I guess they were going for building a bridge between Kanan and the Clones. I dunno. Bored me. But was it so heartbreaking to see Rex and Ahsoka. And I'm glad we got to see it. But this was the first time that Kanan's moodiness absolutely made sense. The way one of the clones (can't remember the name) called him General out of habit and then Commander. Also, it's interesting to see the groundwork being laid for the organization of the Rebels.
  20. Because while she's carrying the pertussis virus (?) and it seems is actively ill, but since she's an adult and was already vaccinated her body can handle it. But the infant she's holding can't be vaccinated for it yet and pertussis for infants is often deadly. So the illness is the wolf hiding (like the wolf did) waiting to devour the baby/Little Red Riding Hood. Adults need to get boosters sometimes, and I know pertussis is one of those that require boosters.
  21. Just because this is the Jessa topic doesn't mean that the guidelines of baby nicknames in the Jill topic don't apply. Of course, speculating about Jill being pregnant again and that non-existent baby in the Jessa topic is waaaaay off topic. Stay on topic and no gross or inappropriate nicknames for a baby that at the very least isn't even announced yet.
  22. The only magazine I receive in the mail is National Geographic. And I just might let that lapse. I'm sure we'll see Star Wars sometime after Christmas.
