In Memoriam: Entertainment Industry Celebrity Deaths

Amadeus did its pre-Broadway tryout at the theatre where I worked and it's one of my fondest memories in my 35 year stint there. An extraordinary man and talent. -
Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
ebk57 replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
SNL reran her hosting gig last night and it made me dislike her less. I guess that counts. It was a pretty funny show. My favorite perfume commercial was the Chanel one from a million years ago where the plane flies over the pool (at least I think it was a pool) and we see the shadow. And I only like it because every time I'm at a Mets game (which, thankfully, isn't often), the planes from Laguardia fly over the stadium and all I can think of is that commercial. -
That is beautiful and brought a tear to my eye...

The Sounds of Our Lives (formerly General Music Discussion)
ebk57 replied to Brianne Chantal's topic in Music
I realized a long time ago that the only new music I ever heard was on Letterman's (or now Colbert's) show, or between innings at the baseball game. I read about new music, but I rarely hear any of it. That's one of the good things about reading here - at least I don't sound totally ignorant around the kids. -
We were trying to find a time between shows here for Mr ebk to go see Dolly again and it might be the end of February. Which means we'd get to see this, too. Which would be good!

It's not the stores - they'd love to sell alcohol. It's the government. They want their cut. That's the whole story. The most important thing!! Be safe!

I love Bernadette...but Victor Garber!!! Just in time for our winter trip! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! According to Playbill, he's in! And I believe them a million times over BroadwayWorld...

I'm so sorry to hear this @DeLurker. Even though it's expected (or at least sorta expected), the reality of it sometimes hits harder than we think it will. All my best to you and your family in this trying time. Hoping for safe travels and calm weather all around.

Feeling any better now? :-)

How 'bout them Terps!!! Gotta say that now as this might be my only chance...

What New Foods Have You Tried?: Like It? Hate It? Share Here!

I had a buy one/get one deal from the local grocery store, so I did. And I was not really taken with it. The glass jar is cute, but as you say, it's not really practical, so into the recycling it went. And the yogurt was only okay (I got the vanilla and lemon). I've become quite fond of Noosa and Liberte (but I wish the coffee flavor from Liberte was permanent and not a limited release). -
Local Irish pub tonight for fish and chips and beer. And more beer!

Two show day: Matinee - Dear Evan Hansen. Yeah, this show somehow won a bunch of Tonys. Somehow. I can't complain about the cast, even with understudies. They were uniformly magnificent. And intellectually, I see that the show subject should work. I remember being an angsty teen back in the stone age. And I understand the dysfunctional family dynamic. But the show just didn't reach me on any level. The end was oddly satisfying since no one lived happily ever after, but... I don't get it. Evening - Hello Dolly! See it. I can't say enough good things about this show. It's gorgeous. Bette is great, but honestly (and especially if you don't have a connection with Bette), this show is perfection with anyone. It's stunning. See it.

Virgil's had a period of not being all that good. We hadn't been there in several years before last night. The thing that threw it to Virgil's was proximity to the theatre. We were pleasantly surprised because it seems to have improved significantly. I do love Hill Country, and I really love Dinosaur, but they're both a little out of the way. And, we have both of those at home (we were just at Hill Country in DC last week! They do music in the basement and we saw Ray Wylie Hubbard after dinner) Tonight's dinner, between shows, will be at NIOS at the Muse Hotel - for reasons too complicated to explain here. Suffice to say it has to do with people I work with.

Pre-theatre dinner at Virgil's BBQ tonight. I had the brisket melt with potato salad. It was wonderful. Post-show milkshake at Junior's. It was also wonderful.

Do you think Lady Gaga can do that during her concerts on Monday and Tuesday?

One show down, four to go. Tonight, The Play That Goes Wrong. The cast was excellent, with special mention to Dave Hearn as Max as Cecil, and Nancy Zamit as Annie as the stage manager. The show is hilarious in some parts. I had tears in my eyes during the scene where they were trying to lift the actress out of the window, and through most of the end of act 1. The rest of the show was extraordinarily silly. I didn't think it was as good as Noises Off, but I never felt the need to check my watch, so I guess that's a good thing. Post-show milkshake at Juniors was fab! And, lunch with @aradia22 was lovely!!

In NY for a week. Tonight, we ate at RedFarm on the UWS and it's so fabulous. I had veggie/peanut dumplings and 3 chili chicken. Mr ebk had crispy beef and a scallop/rice dish. Best friend of ebk had pork/crab soup dumplings and shrimp in lobster sauce with brussell sprouts. I also may have had a couple of glasses of wine. It's wonderful and dangerous that this place is around the corner from the hotel!!

Damn. This makes me sad. The Lone Ranger, the meatball on the tree and Darlene...how have we managed the last 2 years? And now, no more... -
We were going to see the Staten Island Yankees on Friday night, but my friend came up with the TDF seats, so... And, there will be US Open Tennis on Monday afternoon. Yay!! Not much down-time coming up on this trip. I'll probably miss my NY Historical Society visit. Ah well, there's always the January/February trip.

@ElectricBoogaloo, I see Something Rotten in February. Looking forward to it! So, tomorrow, we leave for NY. Here's the show schedule: Friday: The Play That Goes Wrong (getting TDF tickets) Sat Mat: Dear Evan Hanson (sans Ben Platt, but since he's leaving in November and I won't be back, it's either see it now without him, or later without him. Now works) Sat Eve: Hello Dolly! Sun Mat: War Paint Tues Eve: Prince of Broadway That's more schedule than I'm used to... I will make an effort to report back before New Years :-)

Is it wrong that the first thing I thought when he started talking about nuclear waste was "what will @ganesh have to say about this?" And after reading your posts upthread, I do feel a bit better and wish John had talked about policy. I guess it's like all the infrastructure here... we won't fix anything until it crashes and throws everything off the bridge. (I know, that doesn't make sense, but it sorta did to me.) And I'm not necessarily sorry he doesn't focus on all the crap that is happening all around us right now. It's not like he doesn't mention it at all. Enough other shows do that, so I enjoy a deep dive about an important issue that I'm not thinking about at the moment.

We're going for Cuban food tonight for the last gasp of the "eat all you can birthday weekend"! I'm fairly certain I'll have the vaca frita (again!) What could be better than shredded, crispy flank steak?!?!?
