  1. Definitely not crazy! I saw the same thing. When I watched live with my mom, and then later at home on my DVR. There's an aftershow on the NBC app with the cast and creator that I highly recommend. One thing MV said that really stuck out to me... you usually think of your parents being your past, and your children your future, but what if you're walking through life at the same time? What parallels will you see? My only nitpick, which strengthened on rewatch, was how they all acted like the bio dad was a horrible person for dropping his baby at the fire station. That's what you're supposed to do!
  2. I live in the middle of rural Midwestern meth country, and I think Breaking Bad may have given people the wrong idea. Most people I know who have gotten caught up in meth - and there are sadly many - aren't making it for other people. They aren't criminal masterminds. They're simple, often gullible people who get in over their heads. So while I didn't care for the actor, I had no problem with the overall vibe of the character. My one issue was that I found him too healthy-looking for a former meth addict. A friend of mine from high school was busted for meth and did some time, and while she's now (thank God) a few years clean and sober, it did irreparable damage to her appearance. It's not as simple as getting new teeth. It's a sitcom, so I don't expect realism, but they couldn't have gotten a shinier, more wholesome-looking actor if they tried!
  3. I love Chickenhead, but his current SL is boring the crap out of me. DB deserves better than this lather/rinse/repeat writing. Either: Have Wyatt start acting like the son of Quinnsane Fuller and $Bill Spencer, sack the fuck up already, and actually DO something about Quinn, Liam, AND Steffy... Or: Have Wyatt, Steffy, and Caroline leave Forrester and start up the Spencer fashion house. (I'm still pissed they teased us with that and it never happened.) ETA: as fun as the Quinn/Ivy makeover montage was, the idea that Ashleigh Brewer - the most stereotypically beautiful woman they've had on B&B in recent memory - needed one defies belief. GTFO with that nonsense.
  4. It can't be blamed on the pool situation, though. That article says the Paralympic grants were supposed to be paid in July. They weren't going to have the money in time regardless of anything that's happened this week. Such a shame. The organizers deserve the jeers, but I can't help but feel sorry for them trying to put on the Games during an unforseen recession. I mean, Chicago was in the running, and at the time, I was really, really hoping it would happen. With the current state of Illinois government, though, not getting it turned out to be a huge blessing. What a cluster that would have been.
  5. I'm so sad, @Daisy. I was rooting for the cute-as-pie ginger just for you. :-(
  6. I loved Wyatt and Ivy, but she killed that when she effectively dumped Wyatt for Liam (without bothering to tell Wyatt, of course, so he could be humiliated in front of everyone). Right now the only woman on the canvas I would consider shipping Wyatt with is Sasha. Everyone is solidly coupled, inappropriate, related, or horrible.
  7. So it's the victims' fault that they were robbed? I can't agree with that. Four swimmers, taking a taxi together to/from a party attended by many athletes, including Brazilians who would presumably know if it was a safe area? I don't think they're stupid for thinking they'd be okay. It sounds like there may be more to the story, but as it's being reported now, they did nothing wrong and are lucky they weren't hurt.
  8. I don't disagree, but - and I hope this doesn't sound too jingoistic - I think whatever you add, the US* will be competitive in those, given enough time. Where there's a will, unlimited funds, a large population, and an emphasis on sports achievement, there's a way. I think the US* is additionally positioned for success by being a nation of immigrants. No matter how obscure the sport, there are families and coaches here with that tradition. (The exception would be some of the endurance winter sports, just because we don't have much population near that kind of terrain, nor large numbers of Scandinavian descendents.) *By US, I also include Australia, Canada, GB, etc. I feel like we have similar strategies for success.
  9. I give you Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, who will be competing in the men's singles tennis final tomorrow...
  10. Yeah, seriously. Ugh. Credit where it's due... I thought that post-race interview was as genuine and sincere as I've ever seen Michael Phelps be. Now, please stay retired, so that can be my last Olympic memory of you. Truth be told, I don't dislike Phelps - outside of a couple of monumental mistakes he's made in his personal life. He seems like a decent, if boring, guy. (I love what someone said up thread about him being a dolphin without the personality.) His teammates all seem to love him, and if anyone was fed up with the hype, I'd think it would be them. BUT... I hate the Phelps Phenomenon, and so much of what it says about sports today. The medal counts. The emphasis on individual achievement, even in team/relay competitions. The way NBC picks a dozen "horses" and rides them into the ground, to the exclusion of other athletes. The celebrity status given to certain athletes' families. None of that is Phelps's fault, of course. I do think he/his mother/his "people" fed the hype beast early on, perhaps thinking they needed to "cash in", not thinking his career would go on so long. And then the media doubled down again and again. So I wish Michael Phelps, the incredibly gifted and dedicated athlete, all the best. But I hope we never see a "phenomenon" like him ever again.
  11. It's funny... I was just thinking about Flo-Jo. All of these glamorous women running the short distances remind me of her. I'm always surprised they wear the jewelry, glitter, and long hair, but I realize their races are so short they don't actually break a sweat. I'd say, yes, it's considered odd. But she never had a failed test, regardless of a few rumors. And she reportedly was subjected to extra testing during the '88 Games when she set those records. Incidentally, I've had the opportunity to meet her SIL, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and she was so sweet! I remember being so star struck by both those ladies as a little girl.
  12. I don't follow soccer/futbol at all, but I've watched a lot of basketball, which I think is somewhat similar in this instance. Some teams play better at a fast pace, while others are more competitive when play is slow. Forcing the other team to play at "your" tempo is a common (and smart) strategy. The best example I can think of is the 1990 NCAA men's basketball championship. The "runnin' Rebels" of UNLV plastered Duke by racing up and down the court, and Duke just couldn't keep up. It's still the most lop-sided championship game in history. When the two teams met in the Final Four the next year, Coach K had learned his lesson. He had his players deliberately slow down the game, protecting the ball and moving it around the court. They made it less about pure athleticism and more about strategy, and Duke prevailed. I guess Hope Solo would call them "cowards", too? If there are any Swedes reading this, she doesn't speak for me!
  13. Last night, one of the announcers said Ross told them they like the midnight matches, but they didn't say why. Maybe it's cooler? Bigger crowd? I'm curious about this as well. I realize they are all adults, and it's a business to them. But asking someone to become your partner in front of their current partner... seems a bit tacky unless that was already breaking up. Hopefully it was.
  14. I'm not sure that I'd call whatever it is Quinn feels for Wyatt "love", but MMV. I wish he'd kick Quinn AND Steffy to the curb. #teamchicken So much. You're bordering on stalking, Waffles. And people think Wyatt is thirsty.
  15. @Kromm, why wouldn't they share the record? I remember at a previous Olympics, there was an athlete of African descent from neither Africa or America, and they called him/her "African-American from 'other country name'". lol
  16. I wonder if they'll crop Penny out, like they've been cropping out the silver and bronze non-American athletes. :-/
  17. Is cookie a nickname for sad Ryan Lochte? Because, yes.
  18. Simone Manuel's reaction just made my night. Amazing race!
  19. I want Phelps, his mother, his girlfriend, and the unfortunately named baby to get OFF my screen. I know he's amazing, I know it's NBC's fault, etc, but I don't care. Please retire for real, Michael. I'm tired of your face.
  20. Ech. Whatever. I'm still pissed they outlawed the Lochte Turn.
  21. I saw a rather lengthy piece with Tom Brokaw paddling through the Amazon (among other things), and I've seen some short "bumpers" to commercial of around-the-town videos voiced over by Tara Lipinski. Admittedly, the Brokaw thing may have been during the NBC Nightly News and not official Olympic coverage. I can't remember.
