  1. I got the impression it was Deja future Randall and Tess were talking about but you never know. This show loves to throw you for a loop. The future stuff really felt like a kick in the stomach.
  2. Easy game, easy final jeopardy question. The last two FJ questions have been criminally easy. But I bet if I ever was lucky enough to be on the show the category would be some crazy British island geography question.
  3. No, I will check it out! I just finished Mary Beard’s SPQR.
  4. Absolutely correct. They are so inconsistent with that rule! I wish they had it be a harder clue with Pompey as the answer or something. But then again I’m on an Ancient Rome kick right now and I wouldn’t mind a whole category on it.
  5. Never saw a tiebreaker before. It happened so fast it was a bit jarring. The minute I saw the famous trios category I knew Julius Caesar would be an answer.
  6. I don’t like it because they sound so meek and unsure of themselves.
  7. I really wish Maryann would stop stating her answers like they are questions. Notice how guys rarely do that.
  8. Absolutely. And that deathdrop. I always rewind it at least once. So incredible.
  9. She really is a wonderful choreographer. I enjoyed her programs for Yamaguchi as well.
  10. I couldn’t agree more. The judges obviously bought into the idea of Boitano as the technician and Orser as the artist and refused to see what was actually on the ice. Boitano played his parts in the long and short to perfection. Both programs really hold up well. He had such beautiful line and edges. It was not his style to do the little quick movements that someone with a tiny frame like Orser could do. He’s 5’11 so trying to imitate that made him look silly. But I vastly preferred Boitano’s skating. Orser should have won in ‘84.
  11. In that case I’m certainly glad compulsories were still present in ‘88 because he was overscored. Boitano’s short and long program were both superior to Orser’s. Particularly the long. Orser was going for a military theme but ended up looking like a hotel bellhop flitting about the ice. That’s not artistry. And he wasn’t as strong technically either, to state the obvious. Somewhere on YouTube there is an interview with Linda Leaver where she tells the story of running into a judge from the Calgary games years later who confessed that he was supposed to upscore Orser to ensure a gold medal as a trade off for something else I can’t now remember. He said he followed his conscience and placed Boitano first and said he has never regretted it. There were definitely shenanigans in Calgary but thank goodness the right skater won the gold anyway. eta: the 17:10 mark of this interview is Linda Leaver talking about the judge from Calgary.
  12. Gee, sounds like a super fun storyline. I may be out.
  13. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/gold-medalist-figure-skater-yuzuru-hanyu-impressively-bad-speed-skating-041459505.html i thought this video was cute. Incidentally, I did that at the rink last week and I think I fractured my rib.
  14. God, yes. First of all, no one should ever be doing sit spins and bielmanns to the sounds of 9/11 sirens. Ever. Second, that’s not your tragedy to skate to, kid. Frankly, it’s shouldn’t be skated to by anyone but definitely not by you.
  15. Skating must truly be a very insular world because anyone who skates to Carmen at this point has no real world awareness at all. It’s not like these girls who look like children could ever be taken seriously acting the role of Carmen. Katarina Vitt looked like a woman but even her program was ridiculous with all the mugging and hand waving.
  16. I had Magic Memories On Ice as well. The first time I saw Bolero I was also like, that’s it? But now I find it mesmerizing.
  17. I frequently rewatch the Battle of the Brians (Brian Boitano is my all-time favorite skater and he’s such a nice guy on top of that. I met him once the summer before the 1994 Olympics). After Orser realized he hadn’t won the gold a microphone was shoved right in his face and he was asked how he felt. His response was so honest and awesome to me in that moment. He just said “I’m disappointed. What can I say”. It was just so honest and raw and at the same time such a ridiculous question. How do you think he feels? Ugh! He was so classy. I’m so glad he’s having such an awesome coaching career.
  18. Complete agreement about Bode Miller, he was fantastic. I really felt like he made skiing accessible to me.
  19. Start aggressively deducting for routines like those two horrible Carmen programs. Just awful. I never want to hear it again.
  20. My 8 year old daughter is all about the bobsled now too.
  21. I wasn’t spoiled for Deja because I didn’t pay any attention to the opening credits.
  22. No it was footage of tonight’s game. It absolutely was. One of the plays shown was Harmon’s interception.
  23. Everything in the background was in slow motion.
  24. Wowwwww. The older Tess at the end was pretty mind-blowing.
  25. I really liked the ad. It was cute and funny.
