  1. I think I'm responsible for that! I guess I was just noticing that it seems to be a subject they dance around really stupidly ... like they have to score it and if they score it below, say, an 8 they need a reason why but they can't/won't say "she looks like a hot mess" or "it really emphasizes her potbelly/fat butt" so they find other faults like "it's really her style but there were too many ruffles on the train" ... Whereas they can say the food was cold or over/undercooked to their liking or B L A N and it's somehow not as offensive. Has anyone here been to a wedding where they asked guests (if plated dinner) if they wanted rare, medium, or well done? I'm thrilled just to get to choose meat, chicken, fish or veggie!
  2. Oh man, totally my bad!!! I hadn't even thought of that but yes, it makes total sense!!! My mind just shifted to Adam because Mr. Snappy and I had just had long convo the other night about whether he was based on Jimmie Walker or Franklyn Ajaye LOL! I wonder who (if anyone) Eddie is based on. I adore Michael Angarano. ETA: Just watched most recent episode and hubby thinks Eddie is based on Richard Lewis and I think that makes a lot of sense.
  3. Do you mean Adam? We were wondering about that. He may be ... that probably is most likely answer For some reason though, since beginning of series, I had thought he was based on Franklyn Ajaye (one of my all-time favorite comedians) who was also a regular at CS but I have nothing to back that feeling up than just my first reaction.
  4. Yes ... Comedy Store is the basis for this. If you like the show (I keep thinking I may be the only person who does!), definitely read the book! It's really outstanding and will not only give you some ideas of who SOME of the characters are based on, some loosely, some pretty accurately (for example, Cassie = Elayne Boosler), but will also shed a lot of light on some of the stories that were integral to the club and the period but are not being tackled in the series (David Letterman vs. Jay Leno). It's a great read! One major departure is that in real life, Goldie/Mitzi's ex-husband was by all accounts a great guy and very supportive of her and the Store (he was the original owner but handed it over to her because he was a comedian who was, IIRC, Elvis Presley's longtime regular opening act in Las Vegas -- I think there was a bit of that backstory in Roy Martin talking about being Paul Anka's longtime opening act in Vegas, coupled with her bad guy ex Sid having originally owned the Club, right?) ... Also, in real life, she didn't have a daughter but a son, some kid named Pauly something. LOL.
  5. The issue about paying the comics or not is based on the true story of the real-life Goldie/Comedy Store and is covered in detail in the book "I'm Dying Up Here." The comics actually went on strike for quite a while (hope that's not a spoiler ... wonder if it's something they'll cover in a future episode ... how many are left?) and there was big rivalry between CS and Improv ... The "Santa Monica" club is also taken from true life where she opened up that second club as are the differences between who got paid what and where. mytmo, I also JUST saw that Reelz story on Robin Williams ... for some reason, my TV defaults to that channel so I'm now caught up on lots of "true story" documentaries!
  6. (Apologies if this response is redundant but am responding as I read this early-thread comment because I've been thinking about this a lot lately) ... I really felt that way at the very beginning but of late I've completely accepted it based on the direction the show has taken since going "off book" ... Not so much with Fred, but with Serena Joy, I think it turned out to be essential for her to be younger, and more of a contemporary of June in terms of her still having the potential for sexuality (though it's being repressed) and still being "young enough" technically to bear children even if she is not technically/physically able to. Also for her to see June as a rival for her husband's affection, and for her to actually care about that. I don't think that would have been possible the way the characters were written in the book. Just my two cents.
  7. I actually really enjoyed the first episode because the potential bride and groom were, IMHO, very likable AND because there may be a PMS-family wedding to be planned in the not too distant future in that area so it was very enlightening to get a basic idea of some of the costs (except $750 for a solo singer/guitarist playing Hawaiian music???? I call complete BS, even if he played for the entire night ... unless they had to pay his airfare from Hawaii) But YES, I kept wondering how on earth they were able to convince the actual three couples to let these people crash their weddings (frankly, though, I feel the same way when I watch "Four Weddings" ... maybe even more strongly, because at least in the premiere episode, I thought the couple were very tactful and complimentary and pleasant about the three weddings they attended, whereas with "Four Weddings" their so-called "NEW FRIENDS" pretty much trash the weddings, or elements of the wedding, to excuse their down-scoring/lowballing them (though I have noticed they almost NEVER trash the dress ... it always "fits her perfectly" and is "just her style, though not my style" ... maybe that's an unspoken rule).
  8. YAY! I had seen one suggested on the suggestion forum but didn't know if/when it would be approved!
  9. I think it was called the 1909 in Topanga Canyon? https://www.the1909.com/35e2lqx6uk0ci01azjyaqt6z31gnsa A LITTLE pricey (cough) but really nice ... I saw a sign which said 909 and googled from there. It was the first of the three venues ... I liked what they did with Madera as well, which is actually not far from where my DD lives. ETA: Um, never mind on the 1909 ... I saw the estimated price for the 100-person wedding and thought, well, this will only be 50 people so it wouldn't be that bad, but just saw that DOESN'T INCLUDE FOOD OR ALCOHOL. Next ...
  10. For the first time, I actually FF'd through an episode because I found one of the brides' voices so horrendously annoying I could not listen to it anymore ... and with my crappy memory I've already forgotten the name of the episode (and deleted it from my piled up 30-plus episodes ready to watch!) ... I know she finished last (yay!) ... I think it was one of the Jersey weddings but am not positive (don't think it was the fist-pumping one though but maybe?) ... she had really long straight dark hair parted on the side and wore a flowered dress (not for her wedding but for at least one of the weddings and maybe the "everyone act all nervous waiting for the white limo" scene ... but she was not only bitchy and snotty, she had a voice that was worse than chalk on a blackboard. Also, during the same mashup of watching way too many weddings, I finally saw THE BEST/WORST obvious down-grading-though-it's-not-allowed comment ever. No pretending it wasn't what she was doing. It was a mid-summer wedding and one of the other brides gave a wedding a 6 because ... "it was too hot out." Nothing else. Couldn't even come up with another (bad) reason. Just that. Well, yes, let's definitely blame that on the bride. PS I just saw one episode of "I Want That Wedding" and actually loved it ... an LA-based couple who were actually likable and cute (plus, I liked one of the venues so much I found it online and sent the link to my gonna-be-married-in-LA-in-2019-but-won't-be-venue-shopping-until-next-month daughter.) I DO want to know, though, as the wife of a musician who plays a boatload of weddings, on what planet a solo acoustic guitarist who plays one song, even if it's a Hawaiian song, GETS PAID $750????? Even if he played all night, that's insane. My husband needs that gig when we relocate/retire.
  11. I am not the world's biggest Cassie fan but I love the girl-buddy chemistry between her and Dawn and would totally be down for a spin-off of the two of them! Xosha Roquemore is a revelation (and just read that her real-life partner is LaKeith Stanfield, who is one of my absolute favorite actors ... that's a lot of talent in one household!) ETA: I might be wrong on this but am pretty sure this is correct ... looking at Xosha Roquemore's IMDB, she's listed as having played "Actress # 3" in "Disaster Artist" ... My guess (I can't find the clip of this montage) based on my memory of the film is that she was one of the actresses auditioning to play Lisa, the role that went to Juliette Danielle, who is played in "Disaster Artist" by Ari Graynor.
  12. Re: this: "Christian Petroni (Port Chester, NY) - Food Network's Chopped (won), Also a judge on Chopped and Beat Bobby Flay. POV - Food people want to eat." If anyone ever comes on this show with the POV: Food people don't want to eat, I'll be rooting for them like a mofo.
  13. Close to what I thought ... I thought she had either been actively beaten her or maybe "oops!" dropped her on her head or something and that the doctor would see that as soon as she examined her and, if she gave that diagnosis, would probably be executed. BTW, was I the only one who, when SJ and June were discussing a Martha who was the world's best neo-natologist (sp?), thought it would turn out to be Rita?
  14. He's already living in the fire house. going Boom Boom
  15. Drogo, will you accept this rose and 15 metric f-tons of plated goldbahts?
  16. Saw this in the news and the first thing I thought was "well, now we know where Muhammit was working and Danielle ratted on him" ... https://wtop.com/national/2018/06/immigration-agents-arrest-114-in-landscaper-sting/
  17. I have it now! Aired last night/this morning! Can't wait! BTW, watched the episode with the reception at Belmont Park and while at least one of the other brides was a total twerp about it, I thought the "reception gifts" of giving each guest a two-dollar betting slip was really awesome! (Going to the track for an evening is one of my favorite fun nights out!)
  18. Now you're making me want to binge-watch Paradise Hotel.
  19. Can I just say how stoked I am that this show not only has several episodes left this season BUT is re-upped for S3? (Said someone for whom watching the series finale today of "Americans" was so filled with an unspeakable sadness for its loss). I also like the fact that we're "off the grid," so to speak, of the book so who knows where they will go. This keeps me at the edge of my La-Z-Boy every episode. I'm just bummed that Mr. Snappy won't watch it (though I consider him very much a feminist, he found the show to be too anti-men and I don't think he ever got into the book because he is a very slow reader). So it's just me ... and you, my PTV friends. I've long held the "unpopular opinion" of loving Alexis Bledel ... GG was something Little Snappy and I watched together for the entire run, she being the Rory to my Lorelai without the divorced/single mom part ... and I think she has been absolutely KILLER as Emily ... I was SO terrified that Rita had been executed (I think we were supposed to wonder about that, right?) ... I love how she has become one of the stealth heroines of this show and hope we will get a Rita-centric episode at some point where we see everything from the Marthas' POV ... Amanda Bruegel (sp?) is a revelation. Thank you for the catch on Deeds being Glen ... Also, I had been hoping we'd see Cushing executed right out on the lawn instead of shuttled into a van but one can still hope, right? AGHHGHGHHG that baby ... so cute. WannaBeAGrandma emoticons kicking into full gear on that. And every time I see her, Moira just slays me more and more. Okay. All my thoughts. Sort of. Part of me wishes this whole thing was streaming so I could binge but the other part is glad someone is limited my virtual Godiva Chocolate-TV intake to a piece at a time.
  20. I'm going to guess this gets answered or address further in the thread but I'm not sure how to quote something and hold on to it so I'll just posit that I thought the "black books" were for the women (people?) who had been killed ... so, the professors, doctors, etc., which is why Moira was looking for Odette who, as a doctor (and a ob/gyn no less), would have been prime early target (though you'd think they'd like to hold on to them for fertility expertise) ... BUT here is a question ... near the end when the woman is reading the names of the HMs confirmed killed in the bombing, I THOUGHT the last name she said was Odette something ... it's the last name Moira heard. Coincidence, or did I misunderstand what list they were reading (I thought it was the Rachel and Leah Center bombing, so Odette would have been long dead by then if the photos of the women in the looseleafs were already filed, yes?) ... thoughts? I loved the scene with the HMs taking back their names and meeting each other and forming a bond but YOU KNOW that evil Eden is going to out them all.
  21. I'm just wondering why Yaku was B3 over Jernard. He killed it on his first dish and while he wasn't T3 on the second one, he seemed to have embraced the "advice" or whatever ... and he didn't commit the ultimate sin of not finishing his video on time. But yeah, I don't remember being a Monterey fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I also don't remember feeling physically uncomfortable every time she was on screen like I did this time. She needs to make a Xanax smoothie stat. No brainer of a first elimination. I think that Amy will be the comebacker and the rest is all window dressing.
  22. I actually really like the show but am keeping it at arm's length since I figure there is absolutely no way in hell it gets renewed for a third season. It was surprising enough that it made it to S2. Agree with the liking Adam (LOVE him, can't believe he was a power ranger), Eddie (Michael Angarano can do no wrong by me) and the amazing Erik Griffin whom I fear, after this last episode, may be a casualty (with likelihood of no S3, the gloves are off so to speak). I am also very intrigued by a bit player (at this part ... don't know if she'll factor later), Alvira, Dawn's girlfriend. There is something about her face that I just find so expressive. I just finished reading the book (non-fiction) upon which the series is semi-loosely based (I mean, it's strongly based right down to the title but there are liberties taken with some of the characters, while others are very recognizable). Maybe the biggest liberty taken is with "Goldie's" ex-husband who, by all rights according to the book, was (or is, because I believe he is still alive) a great guy and totally supportive of her ... he founded The Comedy Store but handed it over to her, partly because he was touring a lot as the regular opening act for Elvis Presley in Vegas. (His name is Sammy Shore ... her son is Pauly Shore, but he's not depicted in this series, obviously).
  23. Squeeeeeeee!!!! So excited for this to return (without Matthew)!!! I remember I loved Yaku! Tripping over myself to go set this on TiFaux! Wondering why Harrison Bader's name is ringing so many bells for me but I suspect maybe there's just a baseball player with a similar name and my Jarlsberg chunk that passes as an excuse for a brain is misremembering. ETA I checked and feel better now. Not only is there a Harrison Bader who plays for the Cardinals but he actually went to high school at my dad's alma mater (where my dad held many baseball records for about 60 or 70 years until Pedro Alvarez broke a bunch of them)
  24. My least favorite for cringe-fest purposes was probably "Hello," but I always got a kick out of the famous video because the "blind artist" was my next-door neighbor in my college dorm my junior year and we also shared the same major, which was not heavily populated. ETA and also getting back on topic (sorry!) ... I think I may have seen one of my very favorite weddings last night in "A Mouthful of Blue" ... I really liked this group of brides who seemed to all have fun without being bitchy (though I do think there was still, as always, some low-ball tactics going on with the scoring ... "I'm giving this wedding a 5 because I loved everything about it except that they had a band instead of a DJ") ... I really loved the Everything Blue wedding, the bride and the adorbs groom (they looked a little bit older) and all that blue was SO pretty! I think that was the same one with the crying groom who cracked me up as well. I have about 15 more stacked up to go and am holding out hope for the BLAN bride ... does anyone happen to remember the name of that episode?
