  1. I was blown away by the great music supervision choices (my daughter works in the business so I am much more aware of it than I ever was) ... "Don't Dream It's Over" is one of my favorite songs, but the use of it in that opening montage was one of single most brilliant things I've ever seen in this area.
  2. Not sure if this has been responded to (when I quote something it takes me right to my new post) but I was wondering same thing. I have downloaded both Alienist AND THE SEQUEL on my Kindle to read when S1 is over ... I've heard the sequel is not quite as good a read, but if it is indeed a sequel then I'd think there COULD be an S2? I read fast so I don't want to start until I've finished S1.
  3. I'll tend to agree on the theory that "rock" as we knew it growing up (and even among us that are "grownups" there will be a big schism ... chasm ... right word please? ... among decades) doesn't really exist anymore per se. IMHO nowadays "rock" is such a catch-all it is automatically broken down into a ton of sub- and sub-sub-genres. It's almost like "rock and roll" as we knew it ended at least a decade or two ago. And I think that while "country" is definitely its own genre, there is a lot of cross over between pop and rock etc. CERTAINLY in terms of "fashion" anyway, so kind of an odd challenge and as such one I think they couldn't really judge based on whether the designer nailed the genre as much as did he (or she, or s/he or whatever terms are being used these days) create a fun, creative outfit someone could comfortably perform in and still look kick-ass. Fun, though, to see some of the names thrown out in here. I have never been a real straight-ahead "rock" fan (Steely Dan is probably the closest I come) but Little Snappy (who is not so little anymore but rather a real adult working in the music industry and more gainfully employed than I have been in years) just got back from a week working at SXSW and I am sure if I pick her brain she could add a few as well (I know she is a huge fan of Alvvays). My tastes tend to fall in the acoustic/harmonic singer-songwriter genre (I didn't like Stevie Nicks but I LOVED her clothes), really good straight catchy pop (not Top 40 but more like Fountains of Wayne, a lot of NRBQ, etc.) and great old-school R&B. I think they could have had a great face-off if they'd gone the R&B diva route as a category but not enough designers left at that point I guess. The fact that at least two people IIRC did the horns thing with their hands (Stanley and someone else?) referring to "rock" shows how dated the term has become. Do people still do that? Didn't that go out with, like, KISS? I think this is why I really loved Fabio's design for this challenge. He didn't go over the top, he made something that was actually timeless and fashionable, that a performer could wear comfortably, under hot lights, move around in and still be luminous without looking like she was wearing a costume. That said, I was glad to see Edmund get a win and I bet his design would look great onstage and also be comfortable. (Comfort underrated in this department ... performers have enough to worry about without having to be constrained, too hot, or worrying about a nip slip or something).
  4. YES YES YES but for me replace "Anthony" with "Fabio." (With Edmund and Stanley as my back-ups because I liked them so much on their original seasons and felt they kind of got overshadowed)
  5. 110% with you there ... funny thing is it seemed at the very end, she somehow softened and seemed ALMOST likable for the first time EVER. Still I was happy to see her go. Have always found her insufferable, and way too impressed with her "talent" when I've never liked anything she's designed. (Obviously, YMMV). Not sure if it qualifies as ethnicity but I've always assumed he's of Brazilian descent.
  6. I'm especially stoked to read about S4 and how they cast and worked with the school kids. That was the season that broke my heart the most, I think. (PS Am also watching The Alienist and it's always fun to see a Wire actor in another role ... as soon as I saw Cyrus, it was "Hey, it's Bunny Colvin!")
  7. (Having major issues editing/posting here since "upgrading" my computer ... blerg) ... Anyway I LOVE the idea of perhaps starting a separate thread for this book since it seems many people are reading it ... this way we could avoid spoilers for those who have not read it YET (or I guess even people who may just be watching the show and have not seen it all the way through). I'm trying to read it slowly so I can savor it but I suspect I'll be done with it by the end of the weekend because I have minimal self-restraint!
  8. I'm so glad there are others here talking about the new book ... I'm partway through (my Kindle is being weird and not telling me what page I'm on but just finished reading about how they came up with Season 2 plot/concept) ... and I think it's fantastic. I love oral histories (am actually working on one that's baseball-related but it may turn out to be simply a project to keep me occupied until my husband retires LOL) ... and already some of the stories are amazing (such as the one about how the, shall we say, bullet in the refrigerator scene came to be). I also loved Alvarez's book "Truth Be Told." I'm one of those unbearable people who are just Wire Wire Wire (like Isaiah Whitlock's character in "Cedar Rapids" LOL) but I have not been able to rewatch it (unlike all my other favorite series) because I think it would just be too hard. Maybe after reading this I can handle it.
  9. Maybe you can get a message to them that they may have set a PTV/TWoP record for being the most beloved "reality show" family evah.
  10. For me, that would be win win win ... But gotta admit Fabio is totally my pretend boyfriend/sister wife/what-have-you. My weird crush on him intensifies each week. I love his voice and his personality ... (I also think if I had to buy an entire wardrobe in just one color for the rest of my life, it would be that silver-periwinkle-pale blue he used for the astro challenge that landed him B3). But I could watch that GIF of Stanley's eye roll eleventy bazillion times over and not stop laughing. My inner Crayola box would call it a deep teal.
  11. This may be nit-picking but if the point that the children being killed are all immigrants is key then maybe not ... not positive how it would have been "defined" in that period but I'm pretty sure that they have said that one of the children killed -- I think the first one, so before the show's action actually began? -- was "Negro" (that was the term used in the notebook) ... so I'm guessing that he would not have been considered an immigrant in the concept of being recently arrived on these shores, but of the same lower-tier of kids economically? Not sure if this is relevant but thought I'd mention it ... we have seen a few African-American children scattered in among the boys though mostly lighter skinned it seems.
  12. Hoping that Cyrus is okay and thinking logically that he not only will be but that he'll have more of a role in remaining episodes since I can't believe they'd waste Bunny Colvin on a part that has had about 5 lines total so far ... I also noticed the dirty nails on the hand stroking Stevie's cheek ... So, is the theory among other watchers that there were two killers, both with "silver smiles" (one being the late Van Bergen), or that the "silver smile" is coincidental and not that uncommon and that whoever the remaining living killer is is responsible for all of the murders? Hubby thinks the dead body was Ruby (was that her name? the child Marcus was talking to ... not Joseph/Bernadette). Really into this show ... surprised I didn't read the book (or more likely I read it and have forgotten that I read it because that's my life these days) but at least it's all surprises for me ... bought this and the sequel for my Kindle but won't read them until the season is over (am wondering if they are making the sequel into a second season ... anyone know?)
  13. I always read that he was 5'3" so that makes sense!
  14. In all seriousness, though, (well, as much seriousness as is appropriate for a fun thread), Susan Cowsill, who WAS relegated to tambourine for her first few years with the Cowsills (and on whom, therefore, Tracy is based), was and is a fantastic musician, singer-songwriter, etc. So she really COULD have and SHOULD have given Davy Jones a run for his money ... but other teen girls voting in those magazines (and I had my share of 16, Tiger Beat, etc.) would not share my line of thinking. Hell, I was probably 7 or 8 so I wouldn't even have shared my line of thinking were it not for the fact that I DESPERATELY WANTED TO BE SUSAN COWSILL ... I shared that memory with two of her brothers years later when I was writing a story about them and they said straight out "Oh, no, you would NOT have wanted that at all!" ... That family has quite a story of their own!)
  15. Clearly this had to be before Partridge Family started airing. Tracy should certainly have at LEAST won 2nd AND 3rd.
  16. Definitely my favorite video clip ... this is the actual original version ... the episode ended up airing later than planned and by the time it did, "Little Bit Me, Little Bit You" was the big hit so they dubbed that in in place of "When Love Comes Knocking At Your Door" (another one of my favorite Monkees songs). So I like this one more because ...
  17. Ditto to what 17wheatthins said ... LOVED his songs and he was (and frankly still is) a very talented and, dare I say it, sexy man. "Papa Gene's Blues" remains my favorite Monkees song to this day ... Also, I don't think he is given enough credit for really being one of the true pioneers of what became the modern-day music video ...
  18. Not to mention he is the reason David Bowie is known as David Bowie LOL ... Bowie's real name was David Jones but that was not only taken but still quite the rage (PS to the first post, it's Davy, not Davey).
  19. As long as you're picking nits, I'll throw this one in ... there's a quick shot of Dr. HODAD's either ID card or stationery or something and it says "DR. RANDOPLH" ... It was so quick I had to rewind to double-triple check but while my short-term memory issues are still preventing me from working in my former career, I can still proofread with the best (or okay) of them. Also, I can't help but wonder if we're supposed to think Dr. Okafor is somewhat "on the spectrum" in the way she deals with patients? These days that seems to be a popular supporting character trait in these kinds of shows. Finally, and I didn't quote this, but I'm guessing Emily Van Camp is going to be more than a minor character/love interest since she is second in the credits (I'm only halfway through Episode 2 because I'm just now getting around to watching all the eps I have taped).
  20. Fingers and toes crossed for a S2 or at least a nice reunion episode in, say, six months or more ... I confess I have my doubts about a follow-up season simply because of the reasons so many of us are here talking about how much we love this family and are rooting for them ... by the very nature of a reality show, I bet they drop it because of the lack of conflict (Naomi's boyfriend breaking up with her was about as "dramatic" as it got) ... Hoping SOMEONE will take a chance on a second season where we can happily watch this awesome family pursue their lives as they're getting healthier, more mobile, and getting out there in the world (I actually applauded completely non-ironically or sarcastically when Chitoka took those first steps outside). I may have missed it but does anyone know anything more about the family members ... what they do for a living, professionally, etc.? There must be some storylines here that can make up a second season ... as someone mentioned before, they find enough to keep the unbearable Whitney on TV and I can't even watch her, whereas I can't get enough of the Stewarts! Rooting for Drew to get the skin removal surgery and keep going to reach his goal weight ... he is so handsome and kind .and patient .. always trying to help others. I would be surprised if he doesn't work in some field where he's a "giver" (teaching, coaching, etc.).
  21. Bingo ... I would never have imagined her being nervous about something like this, because she just seems to have it all, but that's apparently exactly what it is ... https://www.glamour.com/story/gigi-hadid-suffers-from-anxiety
  22. I think (hopefully RHZ will confirm) she was referring to the challenge where there were two winners, not two winners for the show. It was Lilyan's only good performance and maybe she could have gotten half a win just to be recognized for finally doing something that didn't suck? ETA: I am not asking this to sound bitchy but seriously curious ... what is wrong with Gigi's voice? Has it always sounded like that? It's like she's speaking with some sort of weird "vibrato app" effect on it. Wonder if it's a vocal cord issue or that's just her voice. (PS I think she is absolutely dropdead gorgeous. A lot of times I don't "get it" with certain modelistas but she is all that and a bag of low-fat chips.)
  23. That's right! SO they've never really stuck to a specific "when we get down to X number, we'll bring someone back from LCK" then? I wonder what goes into the planning/decision on this?
