  1. I thought this was a great episode to showcase how completely stupid you can be at 18 and in the throes of first love, 'true' love. It also underscored the incredible privilege Zoey had growing up. Only people who do not know what a privilege it is to a) get into college and b) afford to go to college without caring about the cost it took to get there would even consider throwing it away to follow a guy you met a nanosecond ago to who the hell knows where. What a contrast to the twins who know college is their only way out and they don't have two nickels to rub together. Zoey isn't thinking about money (because she's never had to) and is willing to just follow this guy not even thinking through the practicalities. What does she expect her parents to pay for her road trip to wherever? Is Cash supposed to? What if he flames out? What if he gets caught up in the celeb life and drops her? Does she have no ambitions for herself? I wish Bow had pulled a Claire Huxtable on Zoey. Claire telling Denise she can take her little bit money in her bank account and go 'discover America' is one of the best scenes from the Cosby show and one of my favorite scenes of a parent telling a child they will no longer support them if they don't pull in the attitude. I guess it was just another way to showcase her selfishness which I am glad Nomi called her on. I do like Zoey as the center, but having so many shows narrow focus on her dating life, is actually becoming a bit redundant. There are so many other stories they can begin to mine from college life, not just Zoey's love life. Although losing the big 'V' is rather a milestone. Now that Cash is gone (I guess) I want them to start focusing on the lives of the other characters a bit more. I enjoyed the subplot with the twins and actually wish the show would move more into an ensemble a bit. I am really anxious to see more about Nomi's dating issues and I want to see Vivek get some sort of story. On the fashion front, I loved all of he gold/copper/silver combo earrings Zoey has been wearing in this and the last epsiode. It looks like the costume designer got her hands on a collection of earrings from the same designer and really liked them. But I have to say I thought the distressed black/white sweater with the mustard pants was one of the worst outfits she's worn. It was edgy but it was also really unflattering.
  2. After a month or two of picking one book and wishing I had picked another. I now wait a couple of weeks and read a few reviews before deciding. I agree, not too thrilled with this month's picks, and yes, they seem to love psychological thrillers! But I am leaning toward Silent Victim
  3. Leverage. I can watch every episode of that show over and over. Even, reluctantly, the season where Jeri Ryan took over for Gina Bellman. Eureka. Except I do tend to skip over season 3B and kinda cringe when Felecia Day invaded. But I especially love Season 1 and the reboot Season 4. Archer. A great show to repeatedly binge.
  4. I dunno... The last few minutes with the Warden and Amunet is tying two separate plot threads together from earlier in the season. The Shrinky guy is one of the bus riding meta-humans so the team added one more to the collection. I am thinking the getting the whole set will mean something. We won't know if Cecile's mind reading plays into the bigger story arc until later. If it doesn't then, yeah, it is just meaningless. But if it does, then it is an important set piece. I said in an earlier post that DeVoe was playing team Flash like they were pieces on a chess board, this episode feels less like filler more like the moving some more strategic pieces around and we just can't see end game yet.
  5. If I think about it too much I might find problems with this episode, but it was fun as hell watching it. I especially loved Iris stepping on Ralph thinking he was gum. Yeah, a total set up for the 'gum shoe' pun, but still. it was a funny moment. AS was the visual of Little Cisco and Little Ralph hanging out in the lego set of where Savitar was supposed kill Iris, complete with the Lego version of Iris (with an afro no less! LOL). Loved seeing Team flash work together. Also Tom Cavanagh was pretty damned sexy giving the "bring it gesture" this week's villain of the week. Finally, Loved the ending. Makes me nervous for Barry (not really, but it does add some much needed suspense) and it is tying together the longer story arc. Still not impressed with Amunet as a meta because her power just seems really clunky and it does not really explain how she has risen so high in the criminal world.
  6. Just saw that Elaine Welteroth is listed as a writer of this episode. She is the Editor in Chief of Teen Vogue.
  7. I didn't mind so much the transition from the previous episode to this one re: her relationship with Cash as it showed the quick-cuts to the development of the relationship to get us up to speed. But I would have liked to see also how the fall-out between her trying to juggle Aaron and Luca happened. They seemed to have Suddenly Luca is just her friend again and we seem to have completely forgotten she was all into Aaron. I need some closure on how those two relationships evolved into what they are now. Also hate that we didn't get any follow up on Zoey's pill usage. Did Freeform interfere like some networks do and have some stuff air out of order? It has a 13 episode order this season but was renewed for 20 episodes next season. So I wonder is Kenya Barris just not used to show-running a 13 episode season and can't pace it well? I do like Cash though and It would be nice if he was Zoey's stable boyfriend for awhile. I am glad she isn't with Aaron. His "No offense but..." qualifiers just make me roll my eyes. I do like how the twins clap back 'Offense completely taken." Ha!
  8. No matter what you think of the plot lines of the various stories in this ep, I have to say all the actors really brought it. Sarah Drew was the MVP. She did a fantastic job of letting us see April's spiral in this episode. How her patience and good cheer slowly moved to frustration and the look on her face when she realized that Matthew's wife had died was like "please not one more blow." And her final look into the camera she did 'dead eyes' rally well. Camilla was a second runner up with Bethany Joy Lenz nipping at her heels. This was the most I've liked Jo since. well, ever. Her hysterical laughter followed by her sobbing was well done. I also like how absolutely fried and jumpy BJL was. The talk with Bailey, Ben and Tuck was powerful in its simplicity. And while I've drilled into the head of my older son everything that he should and should not do, it wasn't til Tamir Rice that I felt I needed to have that talk just yet to my 11 y.o. So yeah, this fucking resonated! Also really appreciated them trying to address the differences between racism and bias. And Jesse Williams looked like he was totally tapping into the rage he felt when he delivered his memorable speech at the BET awards in 2016. I did like the lighter comedic touches too... Meredith's reluctance to take Paul's pulse, the sheer absurdity of Paul conking himself on the head because of his anger. Talk about an ignominious death. This is also the first time I really liked DeLuca's sister. She was speaking frankly and with sense and without all the nudgey-winky subtext we've seen from her when she talked about sex. And Finally Maggie's 'It's Science!" scene was cute.
  9. I think it has to be an Iris from a different earth. I saw pictures on twitter of her in a Superhero suit and mask. So It doesn't seem as if E1 Iris would suit up right away.
  10. I forgot to mention I loved he scene when Jefferson rolls up on La La all mad. It is done in slo-mo and there are dirt bikers roling around on their back wheels all in slo mo as well. It reminded me of this scene from Straight Outta Compton a little bit:
  11. Given that she's been with her girlfriend for a year but never really introduced her officially to the parents I am getting the vibe that while Anissa love her she doesn't 'Meet the family" love her. Which might be the writing on the wall for this GF, but does clear the way for her comic book canon GF. Regarding Jennifer, I am getting "daughter of a preacher" vibes from her. She is pure rebellion. It'll be interesting to see how she reacts when her powers manifest.
  12. Trickster family somehow got access to power dampening cuffs. They cuffed Caitlin and Cisco first before tying them up, that is why Killer Frost completely defrosted. Fun episode overall, very quippy. But it really crystallizes the fact that we need Barry out of prison. The best scenes were the prison scenes. I find Ralph ok but he really can't carry the center of the show. Shallow alert: Iris looked really pretty in this episode. Her hair was gorg, she looks really good in that dark red cinnamon color. The leather skirt in the first half and then the top in the second half and the lipstick to match. WestAllen appreciation: I love the look on their faces every they got to see each other. Grant really sold me on Barry's longing and pure joy when 1:30 came. And Iris kinda broke my heart with her longing for him. Honestly they are both really selling it. I wonder when we'll discover who the female character (that we all suspect who she is) really is. I wonder where she'll fit in the rest of the plotline for the season. I LOVED seeing Beebo in triplicate. He's so damned huggable!
  13. But what led him to definitively rule out the first three? Why settle on weapons therefore terrorist? What fact based evidence did he have that connected her to that specific use? Why is it easier to believe a schoolteacher is a bomb making terrorist rather than she may have been exposed to it accidentally or in any other benign way. It makes me wonder what the writers wanted us to take away from that scene. It could be plausible that Shaun was showing no bias and he would have gone straight to bomb making terrorist no matter the color of the patient and her presumed religion. But the show didn't make the character white, they made her brown. So to me it almost feels like the show was trying to make a point that Shaun isn't as free of biases as he thinks.
  14. When La La was sitting in that car singing along with 'Let's Straighten it out' I was singing right along with him. The music is on point! Poor LaWanda. I did not think she'd die. Also very surprised that both Will and La La bought it as well. This show is not scared of a body count. That is for sure. But Tv show Henchman is the worst job security. Love seeing Anissa with her girlfriend and I extra loved her reaction to her powers. Totally how I would react. Overheard on twitter: person 1: "Have we heard 'Negro' on the CW before?" person 2: "We've barely seen Negroes on the CW so I'mma guess no." Me: DEAD I love how Peter pronounces La La. He pronounces it "Lolla" ha! Very curious about the effects of the power on Jefferson. The opening scene seemed like using the power hurt him. But with all of Lynn's talk of his "addiction" I think NOT using it hurts him. Like his body is going into withdrawal. Also is it a fountain of youth, because Jefferson look the same age as LaWanda and La La. Not old enough to have been their teacher.
  15. I think the over-the-top element of Tobias is a necessary nod to the comic book origins of the show. Same with Henderson -- the guy who makes super-powered super hero costume in the back of his shop. I hope the show manages to keep the balance between keeping one foot in the grounded realism with the everyday issues of the family and the OTT hyper-realism necessary to keep a foot in the comicverse.
  16. But why go straight to bomb making when the chemical is used for things other than making a bomb? And why go straight to the term 'Terrorist'? Factually the definition of terrorism has to do with creating widespread fear in order to further a political, ideological or religious agenda. Terrorist has connotations that is almost always based on people being brown and foreign looking. But Shaun didn't know anything about the woman politically or ideologically only that she didn't want to be touched and they all decided it was for religious reasons. So in essence by continuing to refer to her as a terrorist he did draw a conclusion not based on solely on fact. I did not like the Claire story line, even though I think Anotnia Thomas gives a great performance every time. And I love that doctor she was working with on this, I know this is a drama, but the situation with the father felt like such an overreach. Also if you are not going to actually abide by consent then why even ask for it in the first place? If you think there is malfeasance then do what you need to do legally anyway, but there were no real clues that the mother was trying to kill him. Heck she is right, if she wanted him dead they could have just let him die at home, not rush him to the hospital. I do like her continued pursuit of justice though. Glassman is coming off as petulant. this is not a good look for him. I like the new neighbor, for now. I wonder what sort of influence he'll be on Shaun.
  17. Yup. The first three seasons were good. When they introduced BR-what-the-hell-ever and made everyone a damned assassin/double agent that it when it went to hell. It should have stayed a story about a bad ass fixer, her doomed love for the Prez, his scheming wife, and their dysfunctional friends all mixed up with dirty politics. There was a lot of story to be mined in just that without all the kidnappings, torture, murders, and spy vs. spy shit.
  18. Admittedly, I don't think the show did a deep enough dive on her objections, but I didn't the sense that she didn't want him to be Black Lightning because she didn't want him to help people, but was more concerned about the toll it was taking on him. There were those quick cut scenes of him bleeding out in the bathroom while she was holding him. And further it played into Henderson's creating of the super-suit that was more bulletproof than his old suit which might go a long way toward alleviating some of her fears. Of course when your kids are in danger you don't think about how you might get hurt, you just think about saving them. So in that sense I got that she was able to put aside her fear for him because her fear for them was bigger.
  19. I think S1 of Stranger Things was stronger acting wise for the whole ensemble than S2 was. So I am not surprised it didn't repeat. The thing about the SAG awards is the voting body is just actors and any active member with a SAG card can vote. So it is the award show that is almost purely about actors celebrating other actors. And hence it might trend more toward the popular than other award categories. For instance the Golden Globes are voted solely on the the Hollywood Foreign Press. There is no peer group voting (no actors, directors, cinematographers etc.) and I believe the HFPA as a body numbers less than 100 people total. On the one hand they are probably the body that would be swayed most by buzz and access. But they can be unpredictable. Somebody on the HFP likes the CW because they are the only voting body for tv that has awarded Jane The Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend anything. And Amazon, they loved Mozart in The Jungle and the Marvelous Mrs. Maizel. While the Emmy's have very strict membership requirements & voting requirements. So unlike the SAG awards, not every actor is eligible to vote in the Emmys. I think for the SAG and amongst other tv actors This Is Us has a lot of goodwill and they aren't going to vote the way critics vote. On a lighter note, I saw this and thought it was adorable. And then I realized it was a picture of father and daughter which made me giggle.
  20. Totally anecdotal, but the reason this felt very real to me in because in my circle of friends of which do include straight, gay and bi folks we've have the discussion of biphobia within the gay community. This was definitely an eye opener to me because of course I thought within the community they were much more in the know about non hetero sexuality than us straights. But apparently while some people theoretically accept bisexuality, there is this knee jerk reaction amongst them that in the end all things are binary. So you have to be one or the other -- gay or straight. If you are bi then you are just experimenting until you really decide. So yeah, surprised to be schooled that this attitude isn't limited to the straight people, but also exists in the LGBTQ community who, one would think, should know better. But people are gonna people. One of my bi female friends who is married to a guy, gets very frustrated about this. Before she married her husband, one of her lesbian friends outright told her it would not last, she was just killing time until she found the right woman to finally settle down with (she's been married to her man or 10 years and they are pretty damned solid). Another lesbian friend felt 'betrayed.' They had been completely fine with her identifying as bi until she up and married a guy! So when Nomi's girlfriend reacted the way she did, I understood. Nomi's reaction also did not surprise me either. My bi friend told me that for years she always felt that bi men were just gay men who still had had at least one foot in the closet. She told me that after all the stuff went down with her friends when she got married she really had to stop and check her own attitude. One of my straight friends said she'd never trust a bi guy in a relationship because she'd always be wondering if he secretly really wanted to be with a guy instead, she'd always be waiting for him to come out.
  21. Freaks and Geeks, Firefly, and Wonderfalls Yeah I am rather a one hit wonder (or rather non-hit, since they all got cancelled after one season) dvd buyer.
  22. I am actually happy he is moving to LOTS. I think he'll fit in well with that crew. Also they could totally use a speedster. He is superfluous on The Flash because this is Barry's show, And since they've lost both Stein and Jax, there is definitely room for him on the Waverider.
  23. I think this is my favorite episode so far. First, can I say, that Zoey's entire look i just really fabulous. I loved that blue & white color block dress, and then that really cute pantsuit, every single hairstyle. What I would have given to rock such looks when I was in college. I mean, back in my day I was a baby fashionista but tv Zoey is some next level shit. Second, I LOVED the quick dive into D1 sports and how much revenue for schools college sports make and how little of that is really apportioned to the athletes. It is such a racket. The schools bring in millions and millions of dollars all on the backs of the athletes who see none of the money. Essentially the sport is their work-study job and they aren't getting paid for it. Third, I also loved the little dive into the 'B' part of LGBTQ. I thought it was skillful how much they were able to mine about the differing attitudes about bisexuality in such a short set of scenes. I hope they continue to do stuff like that. And fourth, oh man Zoey not being able to play Bop It. The outtakes made her feel very Bow like.
  24. Good episode. Camilla did a good job selling the fear and anxiety. Meredith was a damned MVP in the "I have you back" dept.. I loved how she rolled her eyes so hard she broke a cornea when Psycho Mr. Shue was trying to gaslight her about Jo. I still hope they aren't going there with Maggie and Jackson. On a shallow note, her post shower hair was gorgeous!
  25. I loved reading that entire article. I was having a discussion on another board about the need for people, women especially, to not be scared to put a real dollar figure on their skill and their vale when negotiating salary. Good for her.
