Seven Year Switch - General Discussion
okerry replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Seven Year Switch
***Story was that Kelsey's parents really liked James because he was such a nice guy and pressured her to marry him, but apparently Mom & Dad ignored the fact that K&J had zero chemistry together. No marriage is going to be a happy one like that. I don't blame Kelsey for wanting what she wants, but keeping James for financial support and security while seeing guys like Dustin on the side to take care of sexual needs is a gigantic recipe for disaster. ***But I think that's all Kelsey learned from "switch therapy:" that she can do exactly that, bald-faced lie about it to everyone on national TV, and get away with it. So look for her to do it again. ***Dustin is a player who likes having a wife to take care of the homefront but isn't about to give up the fun and games on the side. And like Kelsey, he just learned that he can have it both ways even while lying about it on national TV and Jaclyn will forgive him as long as he blames the skank for coming on to him - exactly as you said. ***We've all been given a big lesson in exactly how players operate, both male and female. Hope Jaclyn and James were paying attention, but gee, I don't think they were. -
yebbut as others have mentioned here and elsewhere, it was Victoria's duty to provide heirs and she would have been discouraged from doing anything that might prevent or delay that - even nursing her own babies.

Even though they're hard to watch, I can understand why the shower scenes are included. It's to make sure the audience understands that these people are not just larger-than-average size, but have seriously damaged their bodies to the point that they're really undergoing a slow and painful death. Just seeing them hobbling around in long shirts or (especially) lying in bed will not show the extent of the destruction.

Oh, her personality doesn't help at all, but on 600-lb Life I don't think I've seen one husband/boyfriend who wasn't a fat fetishist. Whitney's said she doesn't want that. But she's not going to get a "normal" male who's attracted to "normal" females when she's 400 pounds, though of course being Whitney she thinks all the men should change what they like in order to accommodate her food addiction.

It does, but I don't think TLC has to do anything to make it happen. They just let the cameras roll and record the inevitable. Which I'd like to think is the real "stealth" purpose of these shows: To demonstrate that whatever premise the show starts with - that you can be fat and fabulous, that it's loving and healthy to have 19 kids, that you can have multiple wives and everyone will be happy, that you can marry a total stranger who's there for all the right reasons - we soon see that the polar opposite is true. Every time.

I don't think they were talking only about Erica's appearance. They could easily have said the same thing about a family member who was a 120-pound drug addict. Addicts are miserable, bullying, hugely disruptive people to live with no matter what their drug of choice might be. You can't just allow them to destroy the rest of the family in the name of being "nice." The sister did end her statement with, " . . . and I hope that she gets the help that she needs so she can be a part of our family again." That's more than a lot of addicts get, especially one as destructive and disruptive as Erica.

I would not want this show to discourage anyone from looking for long-lost family - but I do hope it creates more realistic expectations if and when the family is found. It's sad but true that in many cases, if somebody gives up a baby or disappears, there's a reason for it - and it may not be the fantasy reason that the searchers have had in their minds for so long. and yes, I sure hope there's professional counseling available after the cameras stop rolling. If it was published by a vanity press (I haven't looked,) they charge huge bucks for that. Such outfits are actually considered a scam in the publishing world. Would have been better to legitimately self-publish (there is a difference.)

Just wanted to mention that I noticed the CGI, too, and I rather enjoyed it. I was always a fan of the matte paintings on glass done for so many earlier movies, and this had much the same look - a little softer, a little older - that I thought fit here much better than a too-sharp, too-modern look to the artwork. Just an observation.

Shameless Fame Whores: Sister Wives in the Media

Not that I speak "Kody" very well, but I think he was trying to say that making polygamy illegal just drives it underground and then you get the terrible situations like Warren Jeffs etc. If we make polygamy legal, and people can live the lifestyle openly the way the Browns do, then the misery can be on display for all to see and it won't be as extreme! -
Wow, it certainly does look just like Diana's (now Kate's) engagement ring! I hadn't made the connection before. Thank you for pointing that out!

Haven't read any other comments yet. Just wanted to say that I thought the staging of the wedding was beautifully done. Really enjoyed watching that.

Mods, I'll make a request to take LulaRoe talk and images to the small talk board on the grounds that I can't take it anymore lol.

Whitney Thore: So She Thinks She Can Dance

It's also a great excuse for why the men aren't interested in her: "Hey, I look like crap because I'm NOT trying to attract you! So of course you're not coming on to me! You can't fire me! I quit!" -

Yebbut, Kelsey's reacting to him like he's an alpha, and like many women confuses the asshole-ness with alpha-ness. This can explain why so many women stay in very bad relationships. -
I thought of that, too. She would be a 650-pound stumbling block for the other passengers and would prevent them from reaching the exits if there was to be an emergency - and short of shoving her over the side, I don't see what the flight attendants could possibly do to get her off the plane. I'm actually surprised that the airline, or the captain, allowed the plane to take with what is essentially a huge immovable piece of cargo wedged into the passenger section. Sorry to be so cold about it, but I think it's true.

I know Zsalyn talked about this, though it may not have been until her follow-up show. She was doing Internet chats and videos for men who have fat fetishes - who are only sexually attracted to grossly overweight women - and IIRC, that's where she met her (now-ex) husband. Zsalyn's husband got nasty and rejected her once she started losing some weight. That's why he was acting the way he was. Apparently there are any number of men like this, and these very overweight women sometimes fall for them thinking he's such a great guy because "he doesn't care about my weight!" But the truth is, that's the only thing he's attracted to and it's crushing for these women once they realize that, as Zsalyn finally did.

Being nice and kind and sweet and sympathetic and helpful to Erica had done nothing over the years except let that woman eat herself to almost 700 pounds, nonstop misery, and a terrible infection in her leg that would have killed her if the weight itself didn't. And Erica was doing her best to drag the rest of the family down with her. The niece was already turning into her caretaker. Then Erica tried to bully her brother into quitting his job - that his family relied on - solely to take care of Erica. No, tough love from the family and from Dr. Now is what started to turn things around. Kudos to the family for standing up to Erica instead of taking the easy way out and giving her whatever she wanted so as to avoid conflict with her, which is what we usually see. Being "nice" was nothing but a death sentence for Erica, and I sure hope she realizes that.

No matter why a woman is taking oral contraceptives, taking them haphazardly is only going to screw up your hormone balance to the gods. If your hormones are already screwed up, as they are in anyone with PCOS, there isn't much else you could do to make that condition worse. I took the "guy making rude comment" as 100% fake and 100% an attempt by Whiney to get more attention and sympathy for herself. She does not give one shit about what people think of her, as long as she's the center of attention. Just like any other narcissist.

Seven Year Switch - General Discussion

Interesting episode. I think this was one where, as trashy as the premise is, the Show succeeded in doing some good. If it made Jaclyn realize that she's married but her "husband" isn't - that he sees her only as a convenience for sex and maid service - then it did some good. If it make James realize that his wife is a cold-blooded user who married him because her family liked him and that she will do nothing but use him for security while looking for hot guys to bang on the side to make up the difference - then it did some good. I don't blame girlfriend for wanting to get laid right and proper, but hey, Kelsey, disrespecting your husband in the process while still using him for what he's worth is NOT the way to do it. If you're not attracted to the guy and he can't/won't provide what you want - which sure seems to be the case here - the Get Out. Go find somebody you do want and set him free to find somebody who does want him. That probably isn't Jaclyn - I think James is too beta for her in the long run - but there's somebody. Kudos to the counselor for spelling it out for Jaclyn. -
Not sure where to put this, but did anyone see *Brother Husbands* last night on TLC? Had to be the worst time slot with the Super Bowl being on, but I did see some of it. Bizarre situation that is probably fake - one woman, two men who look 100% gay to me, sharing five kids - two of which are said to be Husband #1's and a set of triplets where they say they don't know which man is the father. Could be fun!

James is a mild-mannered beta male. Dustin is more of the alpha type. That's what Kelsey is looking for and that's what "bad boy" is usually code for. -
Seven Year Switch - General Discussion

Much like Married at First Sight, this show is not really interested in helping anyone to find/get a better relationship. They're interested in creating drama for ratings. MAFS's real premise is, "Will two total strangers have sex now that they're legally married?" 7YS's real premise is, "Will two people in troubled marriages have sex with each other, now that we've done everything we possibly can to push them into doing that?" Having said that, I still watch. It's all great TrashTV (tm) but it's silly to think that either show is anything more than a setup to get strangers to have sex with each other. -
I was wondering about the same thing. Apparently the woman who was part of the shooting rampage in San Bernardino, along with her husband, got in on exactly one of these fiancee visas and was barely looked at because she was just coming in to get married. I'd be amazed if this show wasn't affected in some way.
