The core argument here is larger than individual actresses like Maya or Rashida. Black, brown, light, and biracial women who identify as black are all black, but dark-skinned black women overwhelmingly bear the negative impact of The Trifecta: racism, sexism, and colorism. When you remove shows produced by Shonda Rhimes or Mara Brock Akil or a select few other black women, women with black and brown tones are very underrepresented in the media. So while my light-skinned sisters are still my sisters, the media continues the reprehensible practice of presenting the face of black womanhood predominately as 50 shades of beige.

Great news about Amber. She absolutely killed it the last time she was on. I'm so looking forward to her second appearance. -
If the "problem" with Uhura is the vagueness of her role as a Communications Officer, the franchise could easily solve that by concentrating on her intelligence duties instead of her communications duties or by promoting her to a different role altogether.That doesn't answer my basic question though. Why Uhura OR Number One and not Uhura AND Number One? Chekov. What role does he serve that Spock/Scotty/Sulu don't already fill? And to show that I'm equal opportunity, I would trade Carol Marcus for Number One in a heartbeat.

So rather than de-emphasize one of the multiple male characters, you'd rather diminish the one character who is both black and female. That's interesting. Did you ever consider a Star Trek where both Uhura AND Number One exist as strong, multi-dimensional female characters, or is Trek like Highlander? There can be only one?

Yawn. That was predictable from beginning to end. <Oprah's voice> You get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets a car!> Well, everybody except for Stephanie and Jo. Steph got a dead boyfriend and Jo got an invisible husband. Pfffft. I was underwhelmed.

IKR? I can barely find anything on TV that holds my interest these days, and I could never get into any of the remaining soaps once AMC was cancelled. I just stopped watching daytime soaps altogether. Still, as infuriating as AMC became in it's final years, I've never been as emotionally connected to any other show as I was to AMC. That was the beauty of original recipe soaps. The characters and plot lines became cherished parts of your life. I really miss that too.

Speaking of Pitch, the trailer hooked me as soon as I saw the scene of two black women having a deep conversation and sharing their feelings, signaling that they are close friends. I'm SO glad that I've lived long enough to see multiple shows on TV where black people actually get to have black friends (sometimes without white people even being in the room)! I'm astonished.

Pitch hooked me as soon as I saw the scene of two black women having a deep conversation and sharing their feelings, as close friends are known to do. Fox greenlit a show where a black person gets to have an actual black friend? What??!! I have got to see this!

UGH. That was some terrible kissing between Riggs and Meredith. In the words of Phoebe Buffay --*MY EYES! MY EYES!* Speaking of Meredith, she must have really been the bomb in previous years for her to still have such devoted friends. She’s been nothing but a sour pill since I’ve been watching. I keep wondering why anybody bothers with her. Owen and Amelia. UGH. Although the outcome was absolutely predictable, I finally got into Stephanie/Kyle this episode because it was the first time I understood the motivation behind her behavior. She felt regret for ending the relationship. That I understand, although I still don’t understand why she dated him in the first place if she didn’t want to deal with his illness. Still, as soon as Amelia arrogantly announced her surgical infallibility, it was obvious that poor Kyle was a goner. Jo is a terrible runner. Callie, Callie, Callie. Honey. Please take this time away from Penny and Sophia to learn to be alone. You act like an overgrown toddler. Here, stick this pacifier in your mouth and shut it. Overall though, I enjoyed this episode and look forward to next week. Owen and Amelia get married? Yeah, like that will happen.

Stevens always knocks it out of the park. I loved his “wealthy lives matter most” almost as much as Diane’s “sucks to be you, Homie” comment to Jack, coupled with her dismissive shrug. Diane has NFTG. I like that in her. So glad Charlie is back.

Exactly. This is why it didn’t bother me when Bailey admonished Callie about ‘chasing tail’. If her other friends had tried to talk her down from the ledge, maybe she’d still have custody of her daughter. This is why I firmly believe that everyone needs as least one person in their life who’s not afraid to look them in the eye and tell them when they’re being a fool. Everyone needs that from time to time. The whole time both Meredith and Hunt were testifying, I kept thinking that if they were really Callie’s friends they would have advised her against following Penny and uprooting Sophia. There’s a fine line sometimes between being a supportive friend and being an enabler. This time, the line wasn’t even faint. It was a big, blinking crater. I like Stephanie, but her romance woes with Kyle make little sense to me. Like, he was sick when she met him and decided to date him but then decided to break up with him because he was sick? Is that what happened? I don’t get it.

S12.E21: You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side

Ditto to all of the above, plus add yet another round of April and Jackson baby baiting and….yeah. I was bored. They’re ALL forever 17 (or 16 or 15 or 14, 13, or 12). That’s my biggest gripe about the show. Look, I’m probably unusual in that this is the first year I’ve watched regularly and that’s only because there’s so little on TV that I find entertaining that I’m just trying find something (anything) to keep me awake until 9pm. This show irritates me for the same reason I hated Ally McBeal back in the day. The adults are all written as perpetual junior high schoolers. The only operation I’d trust any of these people to perform is the board game. Still, it’s better than most of what’s on TV right now (and that’s just sad). For the second week in a row, I liked the guest storyline best. It was poignant and very well acted. And, I LOVED Jerrika Hinton’s hair. She looked absolutely gorgeous. Otherwise, meh. -
Zola was standing on a bench. That's the same little girl who's been there all season. I was really offended by that scene. What was I supposed to get from it? That the world stops spinning every time a white child gets shot? I doubt the President would have received the attention that kid did. Did NO ONE ELSE need any help? Apparently, if you were an adult or a non-white youth in the Grey-Sloane ER, you were SOL. I wish they'd devoted the time they gave Maggie and her "I feel too much" subplot and any scene involved Hunt's raging manpain and given that time to the catfishing story. It made more sense and was far more entertaining.

Well, maybe half-woke. I admit all I've only seen one write-up for OWN'S Greenleaf so I may have gotten the wrong impression, but I'm disappointed to see that the main protagonist is a very light-skinned woman, while a darker-skinned actress seems to have been tapped to play the "angry black woman" role. I have no interest in helping black people or anyone else perpetuate this light=good, dark=evil nonsense.

Just wanted to add that this egregiousness is not limited to Empire. Most so-called black shows not run primarily by black women are guilty. It's very disheartening.

As for colorism, for the most part light-skinned women are love interests while darker hues are relegated to positions of subservience. It's not even subtle.

That's exactly why I began divesting my feelings from SH after the end of S1. I stopped watching early in Season Two when the CFD confirmed what had already become obvious to me. I admit I still peeked in occasionally in S3, usually after reading this board and seeing posters talk about how the show had gotten so much better and was going ...you know....somewhere. I never saw it. The show was treading water, and I knew it was just a matter of time before what happened, happened.

In a word....yes. They wanted to attract the the Star Wars/Firefly/Dr. Who-type fanboys and they didn't think Nicole was the girl to do it. Thus, we got the ever-corseted Katrina and Boobsy Ross. I guess nobody explained to them that whole bird in the hand thing......... or the enduring sex appeal of Lt. Uhura.

What Went Wrong With Sleepy Hollow in 3 Easy Steps: 1. They refused to capitalize on the chemistry between the show’s black female and white male lead characters. 2. They marginalized the black, female lead because they either didn’t welcome or resented her chemistry with the male lead. 3. When their attempt to replace the show’s black female lead backfired, they abandoned the show’s premise instead. There’s been plenty of discussion of 1 and 2, so I won’t repeat it. It just makes me mad anyway. Instead, I’ll save my comments for the ridiculousness of number 3. I mean, really Fox? The showrunner and writers of your hit show tell you that they can’t write an apocalypse story anymore because <whiny kid’s voice> “it’s too hard”. And you didn’t fire them on the spot? Can you imagine how the execs at AMC would react if the writers of The Walking Dead told them they didn’t want to write about zombies anymore? None of the showrunners and writers of Sleepy Hollow or the executives at Fox deserve to work ever again. That type of incompetence should never be rewarded.

Oh, he's a scumbag too. Remember how they introduced him as a disingenuous politician who pretended to have integrity while simultaneously screwing his opponent's wife? He also cowered in a closet and watched while that same woman (who he claimed to love so much) was brutally murdered. Sooooo, yeah. Everybody's awful.

ICAM. Every time I watch the show it occurs to me that the show would be soooo much better if was about DAG and LD's characters. For all I care, they can replace the rest of the cast (because they're totally uninteresting), and Carmichael can just be an occasional guest star (because he's just that terrible). -
That's not necessarily the house she was raised in. My head canon is that her mother carefully reconstructed Anna Mae's room in the new house that Anna Mae bought her. She seems to inspire that kind of devotion. Didn’t confuse me at all. Why would her family still be living in squalor? Anna Mae was a teenager a long time ago, plus Annalise has been a successful attorney for quite some time and she’s also a college professor who was married to a very successful man. It wouldn’t be a problem for her to buy her mom a nice house and send her sister to nursing school. The brother strikes me as the perpetually unemployed type though, especially considering that he was wearing Sam’s old suit that her mom took back to Memphis with her because she said he could use some good suits for his job search. Agreed. Agreed.

IA that this story is just beginning to unfold, and I'm also not sold that Mahoney, Sr. fathered Wes. I'm still keeping Mahoney, Jr. in the mix. I mean, Rose wasn't desperate to avoid testifying on his behalf for no reason. Maybe he was her tormentor and she killed herself because she couldn't bear the thought of him coming back into her life. Yeah, we've seen Junior in a favorable light so far, I doubt that's his true demeanor. After all, he's the progeny two very unpleasant parents..... and he has a dead fiance. Overall, I liked this episode, except for Michaela/Asher. That was ridiculous. These writers must have previously written for soaps, because I haven't seen a setup that cringeworthy since they had Kendall on All My Children go from grieving to horny to hookup in less than ten seconds It was stupid then too. -
If Glee had wanted to showcase Mike (or any of the secondary or tertiary characters) more, they could and would have. Just look at Becky. Writers write. Their job is to deliver what the showrunners/network ask for. If RM and Co asked them to focus more on Mike, they would have found areas to explore. That obviously didn't happen, and the the Glee characters that stayed in the background stayed there because that’s what Glee wanted. Period. I mean, just look at the show, Family Matters. That show was supposed to be a star vehicle for Carl, but the network wanted more Urkel, so guess what? We got more Urkel. We got A LOT more Urkel. The same is true for any show. So it's not like Glee was hamstrung by circumstances (Cory's death being the unfortunate exception). Everything else they did was very deliberate. IA about Shadowhunters though. I’m happy for Harry, but it’s not my thing either.
