I see them as similar because the magic comes from the lore. The spells are words written in a book that someone has to perform or potions mixed together. Even if they aren't we have seen Dean perform black magic (Plucky PennyWhistle) and preform multiple spells. He's smart when the show remembers this. There really is no excuse for Dean. Even if the damage was extensive, they could have had Dean say, "I think I can fix it, can you make it on demons?" Sorry, this was more directed at the writers, not Sam. Because the writers hadSam say, Dean's a genius at lore, suddenly trying to say Sam's the lore/magic guy makes it seem like they put the words in Sam's mouth without actually meaning them. Talk is cheap until its backed up. That's why its looks like manipulation.
-
Sam himself told Dean he was a genius at lore. So for me this excuse doesn't work for me. If those were just words it makes it look like Sam was emotionally manipulating Dean to get the trials. If they wanted to get the message across then they could have had Dean had Sam a colt that was fixed physically or had him ask Sam if Bobby shared the magic of making the colt work. "Can you fix it?" comes across as Dean not being able to fix it period.

Dean in that scarf. LMAO. I have to admit this article has made me more excited for the Scooby ep
-
"Look, this isn't a perfect world we're trying to save and if I'm not perfect trying to save then so be it." I do like this line a lot. It's so Dean.

These Spoilers Suck: Bitter Speculation About SPN Spoilers
ILoveReading replied to catrox14's topic in Supernatural
I think mine are around 99% because there had to be a reason why Dean's blood was important for the comic relief episode. Dabb's excuse will be "it's Sam's turn now." -
What are your top 10 Monster of the Week epiosde in relation to Dean. Mine are, in no particular order- Dead in the Water- I love this ep. It was the start of the pulling back of Dean's layers. I loved his interactions with Lucas and the fact that it established Dean is good with kids. We got to see Dean's vunerable side. It sounded like he saw what happened to Mary. Just an awesome ep all aroun Ask Jeeves- This one was just plain fun. I liked all the side characters. Dean was smart and observant. Plus, that expression on his face when he emptied the gun into the shapeshifter left me once again with the notice that Jensen needs to play a full on psycho Skin- Again, I loved this one for the insights we get into Dean. Jensen was so good at playing the shapeshifter. He was Dean but yet he also wasn't Dean. The Purge- For Jensen's performance. I've gushed over it many times and we'll never not take the opportunity. Folsom Prison Blues- I really like how this shows us how easily Dean can adapt to any situation. Even its its prison Dean acts like he's been there for years. I really liked his interaction with Mara and I wish she had been a recurring character. I also liked how Dean's saving people, hunting things really means attempting to save anyone. Plus, its another example of how loyal Dean is. The Mentalists- Dean finally getting to give Sam the 'boo hoo whiny princess speech" was a breath of fresh air. Plus, I liked Dean's interaction Melanie and I liked the case of the week. I would really liked to have seen what the wrtiters, Ben Blacker and Ben Acker could have done with a second episode. Sharp Teeth- Loved Dean's interactions with all the side characters, and how we had smart, thinking outside the box Dean. (one of my favorite flavors of Dean). On the shallow side, that knife throw as all kinds of hot. Everybody Loves a Clown- Back in season two when we got casting sides, I remember reading them and thinking how bad the episode sounded. I was so pleasantly surprised by it. I liked Ellen and Jo. Although I could see Dean hooking up with Ellen more than I could see him hooking up with Jo. It's another brilliant performance by Jensen. You can see just how much John's death, the guilt and John's words are weighing on Dean. Jensen is so good with the subtle things. That ending when he started pounding on the car is just another example. Plus, this episode also gave me one of my favorite lines of brotherly banter. "At least I'm not afraid to fly." "Planes crash" "And apparently Clowns kill." It still makes me laugh when I watch it. Faith- This is one of my all time favorite episodes. I loved everything about it. Dean's performance, his interactions with Layla, another layer stripped away. It's my head canon that Chuck really did reach out to Reverend Roy and told him to save Dean. What is and What Should Never Be- for all the reasons listed above. Dean's view of himself is really heartbreaking. Given that Mary is really ice queen and that a warm loving mother is just as much a fantasy as the rest of this episode makes this ep even sadder. ETA: Freaks and Geeks to this list. It's to good not to include since its everything I love about Dean on a plate. He's a leader, he's smart, he's a mentor and a badass.

These Spoilers Suck: Bitter Speculation About SPN Spoilers

From @Aeryn13 the regular spoiler thread. I'm putting it at much higher odds because I remember a while ago Dabb gave an interview where he said that Billie's prophecy of "The Winchester" being important would come into play. Dabb is two for two in "The Winchesters" meaning just Sam, Sam is suddenly acting like he's morally superior with his no killing, no stealing attitude. Sam was accepting and welcoming toward Precious Nougat Sunshine, despite him being Lucifer's son, he's been depressed and needing a win, and he's scared of Lucifer's face which means he'll need a 4th chance to confront Lucifer. Add all this up and its a flashing neon sign that The most holy man is Sam. -
I'll respond in Bitter spoilers.

Sneak Peek. This makes it sound like the blood is random. These sneak peeks usually come just after the teaser and I can't see them naming the episode A Most Holy Man for just some random dude whose blood seems important less then five minutes into the episode. But suddenly Sam has a problem with stealing? A guy who lives on credit card fraud, hustles, and had no problem sacrificing a human for no other reason then he didn't want to be alone suddenly is looking down on Dean about stealing. It sounds like they're trying to put Sam on some sort of moral high ground. Seriously, Sam needs to get off that high horse he seems to have placed himself on.

Dabb and Singer wrote this. No way its Dean. I'd put money on Sam.

Supernatural Bitterness & Unpopular Opinions: You All Suck
ILoveReading replied to mstaken's topic in Supernatural
He was supposed to play Michael in s5. Matt Cohen even talked about how he and Jensen worked together so their version of Michael would be consistent. Jensen has said repeatedly he likes to challenge himself. He's spoken publicly numerous times that he wished demon Dean lasted longer. I felt it was clear he didn't like the guilty cheerleader role of s8 or the domestic Dean of s6. He seems to like to be in the action. So I think he'd be okay if the script called for him to play Michael. Dean would be in there somewhere, because I'm sure that's the way Jensen would play it. -
Dean doesn't need to be possessed my Michael in order for this happen. If Michael is really as far gone as they say why he would have no clue about what was going on around him. Not sure why Dean would need to trade himself. It would be like taking candy from a baby. That's the problem. Dean's not extremely emotional. Up to episode 9 I would have agreed but since they got stuck in monster land he's been pretty much "Mary Who' and chilling with his bacon. He was even, "ya we'll do it but it will take time.' He was even arguing about not killing Donatello just to get the spell. Out of Sam and Cas he's the one who seems to be the least frantic about the whole situation. When Berens wrote that part with Kaia his perspective was Dean just doing it to get Kaia in the car and he was never going to shoot. So I don't think hell flashbacks, or extreme emotion was the purpose. Jensen played that way, but without the writing to support it, I think its done. Now, I'll admit Dean might be burying emotions and there is some explosion is about to happen, but if that was going to happen, Jensen is really good with those subtle touches and would be able to show us cracks in Dean's armor. I don't think we've seen Dean even drinking that much these last few eps. So I don't think this is going to happen becasue the writers seems to be more focused on Cas and Sam's emotions.
-
Im not sure how much help our Michael would be since they firmly established that our Michael is looney tunes.
-
I guess I still don't see a need for Dean to say yes. Why would Michael want to possess Dean. He seems to have a perfectly good vessel.
-
I don't see a need to say yes to Michael to save Mary, since Mary is no longer Michael's prisoner. She just needs a way out of Rift World.
-
My ramblings- I thought this was a decent ep and I did like more than I disliked. Positives: The return of badass Dean is always a welcome addition. I liked the fight scene with Gog, and Magog and I liked that Dean got both kills while saving Cas. Dean's screams during the 'fire" were chilling and filled with fear. Jensen continues to make the most of what he gets. The bacon line. LOL. Dean always has the best one liners. Dean's amusement over the Gog brothers was amusing. A huge shout out to Jensen during that scene where Dean stops breathing. It brought back memories of when he was stabbed by metatron. I almost stopped breathing It was so real looking. Damnit Ackles, stop it. Negatives Jack. He continues to bore me. They should just change his name to Precious Nougat Sunshine and be done with it. What's the point of making him Lucifer son if your not going to at least show a hint of a darkside. Jack's "darkside" doesn't even approach off white. I'm over Bobby in any incarnation. The AU continues to be a dud. I thought they handled redemption for Mary's deal last year. Because both Sam and Dean forgave her. IMO, it was never the deal that was the problem with the character. Zachariah- what was the point? All the other AU character have at least a resemblance to their former characters. If they hadn't named the character I would never have matched him to our Zacheriah. (Dean's kill is still way cooler). I wish the fire had been real. It would have been a very emotional moment (This is the 2nd time a reference to Dean dieing in a fire has been made. I wish this was going somewhere) The conversation between Dean, Cas and Sam. They've all done worse for more selfish reasons. It's like the writers tried to force an ethical dilemma into a place it didn't need to be for no other reason than just writing one. Reserving Judgement: Michael- He's kind of dull right now, but the character seems ruthless and SPN has been lacking a true villian for a long time. The potential is there. Ketch grew on me last season. Random thought- I hope Dean and Cas kept the God swords. They could come in handy.

From Castiel's Cat in the Good Intentions episode thread. Id have to disagree here because there are many areas between what Sam Smith calls "Nightgown Mary" and the Uber hunter extraordinaire they tried to tell us Mary was. It's why I also don't see Jack as a good character. He's even more one sides because no matter what happens he's just puppies, and rainbows, and unicorns and sunshine, and kittens . When your character has only one response to everything, whether that response is positive and negative its a badly written character, IMO. IMO, Jody is an example of a fully realized character. She clearly cares about Alex, and Claire and she's motherly and affectionate toward them. We see her cooking dinner, and asking how they are. That doesn't take anything away from her being a bad ass sheriff or a good hunter. The two aren't mutually exclusive. I don't get Dabb's line of thinking that, that showing physical affection towards her sons, means that she's a zombie female mommy trope who doesn't know which end of the gun to hold. So my problem with Mary isn't soup and bedtime. Its that Mary came across as an ice queen. I didn't feel any emotional connection. She went through the motions and said said all the right platitudes. Now, I get Mary doesn't know these two men in front of her, they're strangers. I can cut her all kinds of slack on this. But every bit of effort to establish that connection came from Dean and Sam. What little connections they did have where shallow and surface ones. Mary didn't reach out to Dean once all season. With Sam there was one brief moment. During the events of stuck in the middle Sam tries to make a connection with Mary and she shoots him down. Mary leaves at the end of The Foundry. She basically rejects them because their not her little boys from her head. Then she doesn't make contact for over a week. Her excuse is no cell charger. Landlines still exist. She said she read John's journal but she still seemed clueless. Did she ever wonder where Sam and Dean were when John was off for days a time hunting? Then in Asa Fox, she puts in the effort to cross a border no less to drive hundreds of miles to connect with a kid she saved when he was younger. Why him? He was only a kid when she knew him the same way Sam and Dean are. Why is he so special that she wants to get to know him as an adult? That's what's missing. It's the effort on Mary's part. It's not sandwiches. I personally think The Bechdel (or whatever its called) is overrated. There are several parts of The Black Panther that would fail the test. The majority of that movie is the woman talking about a male villain and a male hero but to say that movie mistreated its female characters is ridiculous. Every single female in that movie is smart, intelligent, strong, and capable. Including the Queen who we see be affectionate towards her children.

Responding in the Mary thread.

If the show really wanted to they have the potential set up to make both brothers equally important. With 'the most holy man being Dean's blood, and the arch angel grace coming from Sam. Because they said in First Born you retain some grace of the angel that possessed you. But give that title is singular, and with Dabb and Singer in charge I figure there is a 1% chance of it being Dean. Since the promo pics give me a very Trial and Error type vibe (and these writers love copy and paste) if Dean's blood is special it will be a case where both their blood is can be used for the spell, but the one who does has to make a sacrifice. They will argue and ultimately it will be Sam.
-
I really hope your right. I like for the show to revisit the righteous man arc. It should be Dean based on that. But I doubt the writers even remember this.
-
I don't care that Mary never tucked Dean in. I don't even care that she left and needed some space. That's normal in these types of situations. The writing didn't help here at all. What turned me off Mary more than anything was that there was literally one personal moment. between her and her sons. There was one brief moment with Sam where she asked why he returned to hunting, then there was nothing. Dean tells Mary she's been to hell, and it doesn't even seem to faze her. Same with when he told her he wasn't a child. I'm thinking Mary didn't actually read John's journal. She just looked at the pictures. 100% this. The writers were so afraid of making her "nightgown Mary" they forgot to give her any kind of feelings for her sons at all.

I doubt it. I think Dean found where Sam hid his valium stash. -

Sneak Peek. What's up with the writing for Dean this season. he seems far more interested in his bacon than he does wanting to get Mary back. If I thought it was building toward something then I could understand why he seems to la-de-da, but I highly doubt anything will come of it. -
