Felicity Smoak: An Iconic Female Role Model
Sarah Cudlipp    Mar. 8, 2019
https://theseriesregulars.com/felicity-smoak-an-iconic-female-role-model/

Quote

Felicity Smoak is so many things that it’s impossible to come up with just one word to describe her. Which is why we’re more than happy to pay homage to her on this year’s International Women’s Day! So let’s talk about why we love this iconic character and why she’s such a wonderful role model!

She’s Brave
The amount of times Felicity has stepped outside her comfort zone is astonishing. She’s had to face so many battles over the past several years, but she has never faltered or stopped fighting. When Felicity first began working for Oliver, she was completely against his methods. But she did believe in the final outcome of what he was doing, she just wanted him to go about it in a different way. Something that Felicity wasn’t afraid to tell Oliver. She never feared him, even when almost everyone else did. But when it’s something Felicity believes in, she’s proven herself to be a formidable opponent.
*  *  *
She’s Beyond Intelligent
Felicity is intelligent to an almost terrifying degree. The possibilities for what she can do are endless and we’re sure that even after all we’ve seen her do, we haven’t even seen half of it yet. But the best part about how smart Felicity is comes from the fact that she never puts herself above others or treats them as if they are beneath her. Everyone is equal in Felicity’s eyes, and she judges them solely off actions and what’s in their heart above all else. These are beautiful qualities to have and we strive to be just a little more like Felicity Smoak.
*  *  *
She’s Caring
Felicity is also one of the most caring and compassionate characters. When she loves it’s with her whole heart, mind, body, and soul. She will give her life to defend those of the ones she loves and she will always do her best to protect them or help them out when they’re in a bind, no questions asked. There are many times Felicity wears her heart on her sleeve and we applaud her for it. In a world where people tend to cut others down for showing emotion, Felicity doesn’t pay them any mind. She’s proud of who she is and so are we. There’s nothing wrong with being emotional and Felicity inspires us to allow ourselves that freedom.
*  *  *
The journey of watching Felicity allow herself to open up and fall in love with Oliver will always have a special place in our hearts. They have had just about every obstacle imaginable thrown in front of them. And while they’ve had their share of coming close to calling it quits and walking away, there was just always something pulling them back to one another. Felicity had her own insecurities because of her father that she had to work through in order to allow herself to be happy and with Oliver. Watching her work her way through all of that has given hope to many others.

She’s Beautiful Inside and Out
Felicity’s heart is one of her best features. Right there next to her brains. She has a beautiful soul that calls out to others and makes them want to know her, be around her, and learn from her. We know that’s how we feel. From her smile to every time she says ‘frack’, we love every part of Felicity Smoak, inside and out. Even though Arrow will be ending after it’s eighth season, Felicity will always live on in our hearts. Always.

Superhero TV Owes Arrow a Debt of Gratitude
by Sergio Pereira – on Mar 13, 2019 i
https://www.cbr.com/arrow-changed-superhero-tv/

Quote

Despite its remarkable run, Arrow isn't the longest-running live-action comic book TV series; that distinction belongs to Smallville. Even so, it did something that no other program before it was capable of doing: It launched a universe, which demonstrated how much bigger superhero TV could be.
*  *  *
Comic book TV series had been around for decades before the idea of Arrow was even conceived. Whether it was 1966's Batman, The Incredible Hulk in the '70s, or even Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman two decades later, these shows often carved out their own niches and audiences. Their biggest struggle, though, was creating a platform for spinoffs. Smallville famously tried to act as a springboard for other superhero series, but it battled to do so because of network politics and the failure to commit to plans.

Then, a little show called Arrow zipped onto the screen in 2012. When it debuted, it was a risky project for The CW. For one, Amell was an unknown quantity at the time, and he'd need to carry the show as its lead. Also, Green Arrow wasn't exactly a major DC character that fans were clamoring for on the small screen. And finally, the show took massive liberties with canon, as it turned Oliver Queen into a Batman-esque character that brooded and growled like the Joker had stolen his Batmobile's spare wheel.

Yet, Arrow defied all expectations, averaging 3.6 million viewers per episode. As a result, the show received numerous awards and accolades while it broke the barrier to appeal to a larger audience. No one could've seen it coming, but the risk paid off as Arrow became one of The CW's biggest hits.
*  *  *
Due to Gustin's popularity on Arrow, The Flash was greenlit, becoming its own success story. The network execs witnessed how easy it actually was to create spinoffs of Arrow and realized the potential goldmine on their hands. Thus, further series were optioned. While it could've nosedived spectacularly, it surprisingly didn't. An interconnected universe, affectionately known as the Arrowverse, was created where all these characters and storylines played in the same sandbox, almost effortlessly.
*  *  *
The ambitions of the Arrowverse didn't stop there, though, as it went for broke with its yearly crossover events that linked all of its shows together in an overarching, large-scale storyline. The simple fact that film studios, with bigger budgets and resources, struggle to create cohesive universes tells you how incredibly difficult it is. The Arrowverse prevailed, however, producing momentous and epic events that blew the fans' minds and left the rest of the TV industry wondering how it could replicate this same accomplishment.
*  *  *
All things considered, the current state of superhero TV owes its existence to Arrow. If it hadn't broken through and done what it did, the small screen wouldn't have been as comic book-mad as it is right now. It might not have been to everyone's tastes, and its quality certainly fluctuated throughout the seasons, but its influence can never be understated. Arrow changed the genre for the better, and it'll be remembered as a game changer in the history books.

But who are the best on television right now? And is it their abilities, life experience, or strength of will that makes them great? Here are seven of the greatest female superheroes on television right now who prove it is a combination of all three factors that sets them apart from the rest.

BLACK CANARY – ARROW  85%
Juliana_Harkavy_Arrow_Black_Canary.jpg

Debut in Comics: Flash Comics #86 (as Dinah Drake)

Abilities: sonic cry, advanced combat training

Dinah Drake’s (Juliana Harkavy) sonic cry certainly came in handy when Team Arrow needed a new member to replace the deceased Black Canary, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). She also proved a worthy opponent to Laurel’s villainous Earth-2 counterpart, Black Siren (also Cassidy). But even if she was not a meta, Dinah would certainly be worthy to stand alongside the team as an accomplished fighter. With her staff, she’s almost unstoppable. She also has superb strength of character, as exemplified by her willingness to work with Black Siren – now pretending to be the Earth-1 Laurel and operating as the Star City District Attorney – and even moving past her culpability in the death of Dinah’s ex-boyfriend Vincent (Johann Urb). That strength takes on many forms, even as recently as this week’s episode, in which she finally admitted to the team that she can no longer use her cry. Though reluctant, her willingness to share illustrates her continued growth and is yet another reason why she will continue to be the Canary long after Team Arrow disintegrates — as noted in the 2040 flash-forwards.

Arrowverse: The 5 Best and 5 Worst Couples
BY MEREDITH JACOBS – ON MAR 23, 2019
https://screenrant.com/arrowverse-best-and-worst-couples/

Quote

Romance is part of most superheroes' stories, and with the Arrowverse on the CW, it's no surprise that there have been quite a few relationships. ...
*  *  *
10 BEST: OLIVER AND FELICITY
...
It all started with a red pen and a bullet-ridden laptop. Oliver and Felicity didn't have the easiest journey to where they are now, but what Arrow has shown over and over again is how much they love each other, both want to save the city, and their family means to them. They have become a team within a team on the show.

Fans got to watch them fall in love, face separation more than once, and find each other again. The future may look grim for Star City and the (Smoak-)Queen family, but their love story is a bright light in the darkness.
*  *  *
5 WORST: OLIVER AND SUSAN
...
A reporter investigating Oliver Queen, both as mayor and the Green Arrow, could have been an interesting storyline. However, then she pursued him romantically and continued to investigate him. When Felicity and Thea warned him of the dangers of a reporter knowing who he was, he didn't care, even though that also put the others' secret identities at risk.

Furthermore, Susan even told Oliver that she had been planning to publish an article about him before Felicity and Thea intervened. Yet he was never concerned about what that would mean. Oliver turned into an idiot when he was with her.
*  *  *
2 BEST: DIGGLE AND LYLA
...
Diggle and Lyla's romance hasn't been perfect. In fact, they've been married twice because they couldn't make it work for good the first time. However, for the most part, their relationship has been one of the most stable parts of the Arrowverse.

That doesn't mean they don't have disagreements, namely about the way A.R.G.U.S. operates and decisions both have made as part of the agency. Still, it was fun watching the two come together again — the couple that breaks each other out of prison is the couple that stays together? — get married, and have a child.

DJRiter: Mia's training sequence with Nyssa. What a wonderful surprise during the sequence of Mia being trained to fight as she grew up that her teacher was none other than Nyssa Al Ghul! How great to see Katrina Law back in the Arrowverse universe recreating her iconic character.
Jamie: I loved this sequence and seeing Nyssa again. I've missed her character so much, it's a shame we don't see more of her. And it was a nice way to show how Mia grew up.

Arrow: The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Couples
BY MARIANA FERNANDES – ON APR 11, 2019
https://screenrant.com/arrow-best-worst-couples/

Quote

10 BEST: OLIVER & FELICITY
...
Undoubtedly the best couple on the show - and, for many Olicity shippers, the best couple ever, period - Oliver and Felicity had fans rooting for them from the moment the two characters met. Even though it took three entire seasons for viewers to finally see the pair get together, their chemistry was evident from the start.

Like any good relationship that aims to keep fans grasping the edge of their seat in anticipation, Oliver and Felicity had many sad and frustrating moments. The joy everyone felt when these two finally tied the knot and cemented their relationship once and for all was fantastic, and it was a moment truly hard to forget.
*  *  *
7 WORST: OLIVER & SUSAN
...
The whole thing was just a big no-no. Of course, it didn't help that fans were so deeply attached and invested on Oliver's relationship with Felicity, even after it fell apart. This is, however, far from being the biggest problem with making Susan a love interest for Oliver.

Let's not forget that Susan was investigating him, and found out he was the Green Arrow. As a character, her main trait was being an antagonist, pitted against Thea. Somehow, this fact managed to completely slip Oliver's mind, enough for him to want to be with the woman who was on the opposite side of his sister. It just didn't make sense at all, and everyone was happy when it was over.
*  *  *
4 BEST: DIGGLE & LYLA
...
They're cute, they're loving, their badass, and they make one hell of a good couple. More than that, Diggle and Lyla do a beautiful job of representing how wonderful reconnecting can be - and how you can find your happy ending even after you thought you lost it.

The pair was married once, but the first time we meet them at the beginning of the show, they are separated. However, the love never truly died, and they found their way back to each other. They now share a marriage, a child, and a life, and fans couldn't be happier that a character as dear to them as Diggle is allowed to be with the love of his life.
*  *  *
2 BEST: FELICITY & BARRY
...
While Felicity and Oliver are the ultimate ship of the show, with a love story and journey impossible to match, it's obvious both of them were allowed other connections outside of their relationship - especially considering they didn't even get together until the third season of the show.

Some relationships were better than others, and Felicity and Barry were definitely better. In a world were Oliver and Iris didn't exist, these two would be a match made in heaven. They connected on so many levels, and their friendship blossomed in a truly beautiful way. It added a little something extra to Felicity's character as well, and, overall, it was great having a little sneak peek of what could have been.

1 WORST: OLIVER & LAUREL
...
Arrow really did try their best to give fans of the comics what they wanted, and force Oliver and Laurel into a relationship at the beginning of the series. The show constantly hinted at the pair harboring feelings for each other, even though Oliver took Laurel's sister on a boat trip, and was dating his former best-friend, Tommy.

Whether or not it was the original plan to have them actually be together, Oliver's chemistry with Felicity overshadowed any other connection he could have, and fans knew it. Thankfully, showrunners knew it as well, and made the right call never hinting at a potential relationship between Oliver and Laurel again.

10 BEST: OLIVER & FELICITY
9 WORST: BLACK SIREN & DIAZ
8 BEST: SARA & NYSSA
7 WORST: OLIVER & SUSAN
6 BEST: THEA & ROY
5 WORST: THEA & CHASE
4 BEST: DIGGLE & LYLA
3 WORST: THEA & ALEX
2 BEST: FELICITY & BARRY
1 WORST: OLIVER & LAUREL

How Emily Bett Rickards Made Felicity an Arrowverse Icon
by Sam Stone – on Apr 18, 2019
https://www.cbr.com/emily-bett-rickards-arrowverse-icon/

Quote

Of all the DC Comics characters to be introduced into the Arrowverse, none have been reimagined as drastically or as effectively as Felicity Smoak. Originally a Firestorm supporting character from the 1980s, DC's TV version of the character, portrayed by Emily Bett Rickards, has gone on to become an acclaimed key member of Arrow's main cast and a fixture in the shared television universe.
*  *  *
FELICITY IN THE COMIC BOOK DC UNIVERSE
...
First created in 1984's The Fury of Firestorm #23 by Gerry Conway and Rafael Kayanan, the original comic book incarnation of Felicity Smoak was a recurring thorn in the side of the element-manipulating superhero. ...
*  *  *
Following the Arrowverse introduction of the character, Felicity Smoak made her updated debut during the New 52 in 2014's Green Arrow #35 by then-Arrow showrunner Andrew Kreisberg and Daniel Sampere. Now resembling her television counterpart both visually and in terms of professional background, the new comic book Felicity is a self-described hacker-for-hire that assists Green Arrow with his crime-fighting crusade in Seattle. Eventually Steve Trevor invites Felicity to work with him for A.R.G.U.S. but she declines favoring her working relationship with Oliver Queen.

HOW FELICITY BECAME OVERWATCH
...
Originally contracted for a single guest role early in Season 1 as a tech savvy character loosely based off of the Firestorm supporting character, Emily Bett Rickards was cast in the role. After developing a positive dynamic with star Stephen Amell and producer Peter Roth, the character was expanded to be a recurring role throughout the first season. After Rickards' performance received continued critical acclaim, the actress was promoted to be a full cast member on the series moving forward.
*  *  *
ARROW'S FELICITY & OLIVER QUEEN
...
However, given their immediately apparent chemistry, Felicity and Oliver's romantic relationship was something of an inevitability. After trying and failing to date at the beginning of Season 3 due to Oliver's commitments as the Green Arrow, the couple finally succeed in entering a serious relationship by the season finale.

After discovering Oliver had been lying about the existence of his son from a previous relationship, William Clayton, Felicity breaks off her engagement with him. This estrangement is further exacerbated by Oliver being tricked by Prometheus into killing her police officer boyfriend Billy Malone but, by the start of Season 6, the two have fully reconciled and resumed their romantic relationship.
*  *  *
After witnessing Barry Allen and Iris West's impromptu wedding in the middle of Season 6, Felicity convinces Oliver to similarly marry her on the spot. Their marriage is quickly tested when Oliver is imprisoned for his vigilante activities as the Green Arrow. Some time after his release, Felicity discovers she is pregnant with Oliver's child and gives birth to a daughter named Mia Smoak and arranges for her to be raised in secrecy outside of Star City.

From a one-off guest star to a crucial part of Team Arrow, Felicity Smoak is an example of the Arrowverse taking an obscure DC character and improving upon them by updating and changing them. Much of this is a testament to Rickards' truly laudable performance, bringing bright, self-aware energy to a series that currently stands as the darkest in the Arrowverse. With the character and actress poised to leave the series after the conclusion of its seventh season, her presence will be sorely missed as Arrow moves into its final season.
