Season 17/Episode 24  - For the Greater Good

Did anyone else get a sense that they were wrapping up the series?  I have felt for the longest time that there's almost no one at Station House 4 other than Murdoch and Higgins (and sometimes George, if we're lucky).  Almost all the other regulars are only there once in a while, and the semi-regulars' visits are few and far between.  Now that Julia and Susannah have been shipped off to England, I'm getting a nagging feeling that our show is turning out the lights.  🤔 😪

It did feel a little like they were wrapping up the series with Brackenreid and Julia leaving. If William had left too, I would have thought so for sure.

My guess is that the storyline with Julia leaving is to set up an episode next season with her returning home on the Titanic.

I think the show is taking place in late 1911 at this point based on the Mona Lisa being stolen in August 1911 (Ep. 3) and the federal election being in September 1911 (Ep. 17). The Christmas episode aired between those two episodes, so it's a little confusing.

Season 17, Episode 24 - For the Greater Good

I also wondered about the possibility of a Titanic return trip for Julia/Susannah.  Since Brackenreid was made Chief Constable, he can still interact with Station House 4 and I wonder about Murdoch still being only "acting" Inspector.

I hope this was not a series end since so many regulars weren't in it but ever since Frankie Drake was cancelled on a horrid cliffhanger, I don't count on anything until a new season announcement is made.

I liked the episode.  I even liked the dawning realization by Constable Tucker that once he took that first step down the corruption path, he was on the hook for a lot of future grief.  Higgins & Crabtree is always a fun double act.  Murdoch's reaction to Julia's job offer was in character even if not perhaps period correct.  I loved him fussing over Julia knowing how to work the camera at the station to mask his sadness at their leaving.

As always, it was a delight hanging out with all of you this season!

I saw a lot of comments on Facebook expressing the same thought. I can't believe they would end the series without letting us know beforehand but it's happened to other shows as we sadly know. It really wasn't a proper ending.

Even if they do a shortened final season I would like to know it's the final season and would like everyone's lives to be wrapped up somehow.

I really don't like the idea that Julia and Susannah return on the Titanic although, of course, they could still survive. But it's not just their survival - I don't always like when international events (and famous people) are kind of jammed into the show.

I also don't like that Julia is going off to England to teach when she just opened her own hospital.

So did I.  I' m glad they didn't just let that storyline drop.

Even though Brackenreid's and Murdoch's promotions were well deserved and a long time coming, I didn't like the absence of Brackenreid. I also missed seeing Watts and Miss Hart.

@Grundoon59, how was your eclipse viewing? Even though we are in the path of totality I missed the full coverage because I didn't wake up from my nap quite in time.  I was close though and there was only a tiny crescent of sun showing when I did go out.  Luckily I only had to go out my back door to get a perfect view.

@Trey - thanks for asking.  The only part of Michigan that was in the totality was about 50 miles south of me (right on the Ohio border).  I unfortunately couldn't take the day of work to venture down there (weather predictions were iffy until only a couple of days before).  Apparently, there was quite a traffic jam as well.

One of my coworkers did buy us all the NASA approved glasses so my boss led us outside to view the 99% event.  It was still cool watching the sliver move around the sun. We could feel a slight temperature drop and some shadows were oddly shaped.  Glad I participated - not sure I would ever chase another one.  My history major brain tried to imagine how frightening it would have been for people before the scientific explanation was known.

I would be shocked if a show that has been around as long as Murdoch Mysteries goes out with so little fanfare. Can anyone think of a series in the last few decades that lasted into double digits seasons that got cancelled suddenly/ didn't announce in advance that they were entering their final season? I can't.

Thanks for sharing the article.  I too got a bad feeling from the heading about Ten Episodes; however, not much further in the report, was this bit of info:

Season 18 is slated to begin production in 2023 by the show’s production company Shaftesbury Films. This season will be another long 18 episode order by CBC, ensuring plenty of compelling mysteries and developments in the lives of the main ensemble cast.

Admittedly, the more I read, the more confused I got.  There was some flip/flopping regarding which season was being discussed, so I'll just chill for now.  😉

That was my impression of the article too.  So we'll just wait until we hear something definite before we start pulling out our hair.

For such a beloved series of this duration, I would like to believe that as well, Trey.  There were such significant notices about "Why is Everyone Singing?", that I expect there would be many more announcements if they were ending the series (even though I did get nervous about my (hopefully) mistaken perception of same).

I enjoy the inclusion of international events and/or famous people incorporated into MM, but on a small scale, and infrequently.  Too large a focus limits the writers' storyline, as they shouldnt stray far from the factual history.  In the case of Julia and Susannah being on the Titanic, I wouldn't want to see that either.  I could accept if there was a misunderstanding that they were/might have been on board.

I also don't like that Julia is going off to England to teach when she just opened her own hospital.

Yes, they left that hanging, with no mention (that I recall) of how/who would be in charge of it in Julia's absence.

Renewed for Season 18 per wiki Fandom.com.

Here's a quote from the site that will set minds at rest for a while:

Quote

Fans concerned about the show coming to a close any time soon need not worry as Bisson and Mitchell say they’re having too much fun to stop. Show-runner Peter Mitchell recently stated, “We’ve got history on our side; there’s no shortage of stories.”

Season 17, Ep. 14 - The Smell of Alarm Jan.  29 2024

This was such a great episode, probably the best of the season so far.

Too bad the site was down last week so I didn't get to post anything then and now I've forgotten what I wanted to say.

I was surprised that Crabtree wasn't there; I thought he was back for good in the previous episode.

I agree @Trey, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode even as I got creeped out by the bees.  Missed George, but loved the Higgins moments - he has always been good but this season (at least for me) he has been knocking it out of the park with his material.  I agree also that I feel like I am missing some comments I meant to make but maybe a rewatch will spark a memory.

Just watched this episode on Ovation.  I was surprised George wasn't back.  He found his father and he was headed home, and there wasn't even a mention of him.

I loved this episode.  As I was watching it, I was thinking it was more and more like one of the old Batman episodes with Adam West.  The newspaper headlines, the music, etc.  When we saw Miss Sweet in her lair dressed in her costume, I thought even more that she would have been a good ridiculous classic Batman villain called the Beekeeper.  She even had gadgets that helped her in her crimes.

Then to have Murdoch and Higgins talk about how they were a great pair, and Murdoch all but said "dynamic duo" confirmed for me that the writers intended to write it like a Batman ep.  So much fun.  I'll have to watch it again.

I was too busy cracking up at the names to notice Batman similarities.  LaFlamme studies arson.  BEEZbruch studies bees. Sweet pushes honey.  And, of course, Clara Kent, far too like Clark Kent to be an accident.

I thought it was a rollicking episode.  And, as Grundoon mentioned, Higgins IS knocking it out of the park.   Hahaha - The Newsome Twosome.

But I still miss George.

17.15 Murdoch and the Treasure of Lima

I looked this episode up on imdb to get the title correct and noticed that the birdwatcher lady was played by Margaret Atwood.

The only other thing I have to say about this episode is that Daniel Maslany is gold.

Yeah, it wasn't the most memorable episode, but I liked seeing Ted Atherton. He made the sleazy preacher character fun. Glad to see George again.

I hated this episode.  The preacher and his "Sister" were beyond irritating.  I was surprised to see Margaret so taken with them, it seems sometimes she is depicted as wise and astute and other times as a complete gullible fool.

I did appreciate that George showed up but I find it jarring that there was absolutely no conversation between him and the team.  "Hey George, welcome back, how were your travels?"  Instead, they pretend like he's been around the whole time.

I noticed that Higgins was absent... is this budget cuts?  Can't afford to pay everyone so someone has to always be absent?

Season 17 What I liked

Crabtree as Inspector

Every time Watts and Crabtree were on screen

Murdoch and Julia forced to help a criminal get away with their crime because she kidnapped Susannah.

The Mona Lisa scam! I first heard about it on Leverage it was the first scam Parker learned.

I liked the guru retreat and that the leader wasn't a murderer. That was different. I liked that Effie and Watts were there.

Violet being the jockey

I liked Effie getting an episode although I wish Murdoch or someone noticed Effie was getting more drugged but didn't bother to help her.

The Highland Games were a lot of fun

The Treasure Hunt was fun too.

Terrence Meyers episode for once

Watts and Crabtree investigating the girl's murder at the university and Watts having a crush on the guy.

Brackenreid trying hard to find a gift for Watts

Brackenreid promotion

What I Didn't Like

Crabtree gone for so many episodes. The way other actors disappeared from episodes.

Crabtree back to being a Constable, why can't they make him a detective? It's been seventeen years.

Murdoch being a scrooge at Christmas.

The wishes/dream episode I wish was better

I didn't like this season's episode in the woods with Julia, Effie,  Violet and Louise

Julia taking the job in London. Why can't she stay at the women's hospital she just help built? Wouldn't she be training new doctors and nurses there?

I'm glad the show was renewed. The last episode really felt like a series finale. I do wonder if it would end before WWI breaks out or not. I hope not.

Unfortunately, after years of hanging out with you all and enjoying my early access to Murdoch Mysteries, I have cancelled my cable in anticipation of moving relatively soon.  So, I am not sure if I will be able to watch with Ovation online or if I will have to wait for Acorn in the spring.

I will probably still lurk to read comments but will miss being more interactive with this group at least until I can watch the episodes.  Enjoy them for me please!

Season 18.Ep.01  The New Recruit Oct. 7/2024

Quote

Murdoch and Crabtree enjoy a war re-enactment, until a fellow pretend soldier is murdered.

New opening credits, new station boss, Brackenreid shaves his moustache...so many new things this season. Some change is good as long as they don't go changing everything just for the sake of change.  I didn't miss Julia.  I know she'll be back soon enough.

I think the new station boss will bring a lot to the show.

I hope they wrap up the Tucker story line fairly quickly. I'm glad he at least had enough scruples to hesitate burning down the Starbright Lounge. But, whatever happens, I don't think it will end well for Tucker.

And Terrence Meyers! I wasn't expecting him to pop up so soon in the season.  But, where there's gold, there's Meyers.

The actual cotw was okay but seemed to be overshadowed by all the other stuff going on.

I love that those of us Stateside don't have to wait months to watch!

I like the new credits, but why now after 18 seasons?  Is it because Helene is (temporarily) gone?  Jonny Harris' name was still in the credits last season even though he missed half of the episodes.

There was some kind of big Ovation chryon at the bottom of the screen when the episode started and they were listing names, so I saw Yannick Bisson, then chryon, then Jonny Harris.  So I couldn't even tell if Helene's name was still in the credits.  I'm assuming no, since perhaps now they just list who is in the episode.

As a result, I saw Peter Kelleghan's name and actually screamed.  I can't stand Terence Myers.  The only good thing about Terence Myers is the way Murdoch intones "Terence. Myers" almost in a Jerry Seinfeld "Hello.... Newman" kind of way.

The new inspector, I think it's great that they are adding a regular Asian cast member.  But I find it odd that the character is American.  I think I missed the explanation.  How is it that an American policeman can become the boss of a Canadian police station?  And why couldn't they just make the character Canadian?

Nice to see George, hope he sticks around all season.  Nice to see Watts and Higgins.  The Tucker storyline, I know it is a carryover from last season but I hope it wraps up quickly.

I loved the re-enacting at battle from War of 1812 and I really liked the dummy they were using for Brock. That was hilarious. I wish they ended up using it. Murdoch and George both looked like they were having fun.

I really wasn't expecting Terence Meyers to show up when he did. I think this is the second time I wasn't annoyed by him.

It was weird to see Brackenreid without his mustache but I agree with George it made him look a lot younger. And apparently Margaret really loves it too.

Watts started out very relaxed as the Inspector which fits his style but he quickly learned he needed to do more. I laughed at him telling the constables to do what they do best leading to a poker game and Henry taking a nap.

I like the new inspector that'll be really interesting.

I'm glad Tucker didn't burn down Violet's club but I still hate him. I love Watts shutting him down when he tried to blackmail him.

This is one of my favorite things about this series - along with how he says "James Pendrick."*

Loved the first episode. Cool new credits, and lots of shifting roles (Brackenreid moves to Chief Constable, Watts - briefly - becomes inspector).

I like Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and I like Inspector Choi. It's going to be fun to watch him settle in at Station House 1.

Tucker is awful. And it's probably going to get worse.

*We didn't see Pendrick last season. Wonder if we'll see him in season 18.

I wasn't happy to see Meyers either, although Peter Kelleghan is a really good actor.  I'vce not seen him in anything other than MM, but IMO, when an actor can invoke such reactions from viewers, they are doing a good job.  "Newman".  That gave me the giggles.  It's oh so true.  Murdoch knows Meyers well enough now that he can usually outsmart him.

Really liking the new Inspector.  He's got hutzpah, and won't take crud from those who are being racist and/or thinnking him being new will let them get over/ around him.

I agree that I'd like to see the Tucker storyline end quickly, but I'm worried it won't and am concerned he and the old "Black Hand" cohorts will cause some major difficulties for the rest of Station House 4.  I really liked Higgins and Watts standing up to him.  Obviously doesn't respect his acting boss.  Even if you think Watts is "beneath you", he is much more intelligent and savvy.

I couldn't read quickly enough all of the note Tucker got at the end of the show. Was he being further threatened?

Brackenreid's explanation was a little vague, with next to nothing to qualify his reasoning.  Not verbatim - "Encountered Choi in a bar (IIRC) somewhere and after chatting over a few pints, I thought he would make a good inspector."  I don't think Murdoch had turned down the position yet, so I was quite surprised Brackenreid had made this offer beforehand.  Choi had had enough lead time to  already investigate at least William and George.  It seems a little wishy washy, and isn't Brackenreid's way of operating, but after Murdoch declined the promotion, this was an ace up TB's sleeve.

I'm ashamed to admit it took me almost half the show to.figure out what was "wrong" with Brackenreid. Then I yelled at the television, "he has too much face!"😂. And before anyone yells at me, he looks fine, just different.

Not a bad episode though I'm already tired of Tucker. I hope that storyline ends sooner rather than later. I like Choi, interesting new addition.

Is Inspector Choi an American or did he just work in some American police departments?  I wonder why they said he worked in American departments, including San Francisco.  It's not as if that is historically accurate.

And the actor is himself Canadian, so that's an even more confusing choice of nationality for the character.

I thought Brackenreid specifically said he was American.

18.02 - Only Murdoch in the Building

I've never seen "Only Murders in the Building" so I wouldn't have picked up on any homages to that show, if there were any, apart from a murder being discovered in an apartment building.

I don't fully understand why Murdoch would move into a rental apartment building.  Because he's lonely at home with Julia and Susannah gone?  Murdoch lived alone for years and it seems to me that he is a loner at heart anyways.  He seems perfectly content to spend his free time by himself reading or working on an invention.  I really don't need to see this obsessed fan try and develop a romantic relationship with him.

The murder itself, I loved how eager and involved Choi was in the case.  But it was so obvious, I said right away that the weird guy was a twin.

The B plot, it was nice to see Effie.  But I have always disliked Miss Cherry.  She was a little better in the past year or two in some episodes when she seemed more of a friend and an adjacent team member.  But she was directly detrimental to Effie's career, I hope Effie remembers this.

No George?  Not even to support Effie?  Jonny Harris' name was still in the credits even though he didn't appear.  If that's the case, why isn't Helene Joy's name in the credits?  Is she only going to show up once or twice this season if at all?

Mary! This is the second time Rebecca Liddiard from Frankie Drake Mysteries has been on Murdoch Mysteries. Chantel Riley is the only one who hasn't been on the show.

I liked her character but I don't want her to a love interest for William. I hope this is the only episode with her. It was fun getting wrapped up in  murder with William and later Choi.

I don't know why Murdoch moved either.

I hated Cherry for most of the series. She  did manage to get better the last couple years. But she back to being a jerk. "Because we're friends?" Yeah, Cherry you are friends. She also knows Effie she's not the type to mess up a case. Plus it's clear there was something bigger going on and that her "source" was probably in on it which wouldn't be the first time or you'd think she'd want to know all about the bigger something.

Loved seeing Rebecca Liddiard! Her character's fangirling over getting to be involved in a real murder mystery made me chuckle.

Enjoyed seeing Choi directly involved in the case. Looks like he and Murdoch will make a good team.

Felt bad for Effie, but I did like her team-up with Brackenreid. I'm curious to see how they involve him in cases now that he's chief constable.

Are we getting Julia and Sussanah back for any episodes this season?
