S10.E16: Return of the Masters Finale

Is it LIVE again? That's always a well-coordinated, slickly produced, and entertaining hour of television with lots of interesting anecdotes and plenty of great content. I especially enjoy being able to hear everyone, never dealing with interruptions, never having to have Dave repeat himself because the person he's talking to just three feet away can't hear him, and Dave never having to ask the audience to shut the hell up already because no one else can hear anything that's going on and they're wasting time. 

Top notch broadcasting all around. Huzzah!

As usual, I will be recording and watching later when I can FF through all the stuff @Charlesman mentioned above (hee!). That leaves about 15 minutes of actual tattoos and a winner declared. Hopefully I won't be too pissed off.

I thought Josh's chest tattoo was an absolute mess. Stand 20 feet away from that thing in person and tell me you can spot and follow all of those animals no problem. Meh.

Of the coach's snakes, I really liked DJ's and Steve's. I really wasn't impressed by Anthony's snake at all--looking too thin and weak imo 

Out of the head tattoos, I preferred Steve's and DJ's. Steve's was really breathable and cool, DJ's was massive and had so many interesting features.

Overall I thought that the judges made the correct call in awarding DJ the winner, I would have ranked them 1) DJ 2) Steve 3) Anthony

I was more feeling Juan's tattoo compared to the others'. Wish that the contestants had done 2 tattoos rather than the coaches. 

Of course the show is bringing back Cleen for another season. ROUND 3?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! This show will not quit until Cleen finally wins something. I'm not sure what the format is going to be but I already feel bad for Christian because there is no way that the show will deny Cleen again.

Except for the really weird opening sequence of Ollie on a motor cycle, Dave in a casino and Chris.....was there, it actually ran really smoothly.  They didn't have contestants that you don't care about anymore having stupid arguments about something pointless.  No extra loud audience and people not being able to hear either.  It was one of their better finales.

Totally agree about Josh's tattoo, it took me a few seconds to find the snakes head and it just seemed to be body parts all over the place.  In the final judging Ollie even said because of it's size, Josh's was easier to read, WTF?

I think Rollie showed that he didn't really deserve to be in the finale, when he was showing his canvas the stencil, straight away you could tell he wasn't going to win.

I thought all the masters tattoo's were pretty amazing, a little disappointed that they seem to reward DJ for doing bigger tattoos, but overall I wouldn't have minded any of the 3 winning.

I am convinced at this point that there is some sort of wizard curse on the show if Cleen does not win the Inkmaster title. If Christian beats him then the season after that will only have two contestants Kleen and Dirty Kleen, which will just be Kleen in a fake mustache disguise.

I was really disappointed in Josh's tattoo. The battle royal theme has produced some of the worst muddiest tattoos to date for the finale. All of them looked like a garbled mess and yes, Roly was totally out of his league. I thought Josh has some decent design skills and was surprised that his tattoo was so unimpressive.

The head tattoos were kind of awesome, but it was probably not the time for Anthony to try out a Polynesian design for the first time. The other two went with their strengths and that was probably a good strategy.

Thoughts:

Peck's suit was atrocious, so poorly fitting. Roly's pants - gurkkkk. Happy that there was no swinging Dave.

Steve's snake had a zipper mouth and went upside down in parts for no reason.

Roly's master work (and I use that term very loosely) looked like street art graffiti style and didn't fit the body very well. Disembodied heads were never going to look like a battle. Plus his dragon has 2 feet but the eagle only one.

Juan - strange kink to the snake's tongue, and too many teeth. I totally get Nunez's comment about power of the 3 not being proportionate.

Josh's was too busy to read well and also had challenges in the proportions.

Head tatts - Steve's looked like an Ood and I couldn't get past that. Anthony - portraits on a head! Bold move and executed well. DJ's all the stuff in blue going down the back was unnecessary and had a weird wookieface in the middle. The top was good but tassels are for curtains!

 

Christian and Cleen can both just fuck right off - I very much doubt I'll be watching that season.

I agree that the production of this finale was much tighter - no scripted arguments between eliminated contestants and with the masters presenting two tattoos in addition to the contestant finale presentation there was plenty of critique and less filler. Was Ollie's suit made of leather?

I felt like DJ was the pre-ordained winner all year so no surprise there. Same with Josh. Juan was a much more humble guy and I thought his chest piece was the best. His was the easiest for me to decipher on the screen - both Roly and Josh had me searching to find the heads/tails of their animals. I have a soft spot for Anthony and appreciate him trying out the Polynesian but DJ's head piece was really amazing and showed well from any angle.

Much as I disliked him, Josh deserved the win, not just for the finale piece, but for his work overall in the season. Likewise DJ. I was hoping Anthony would pull it out, but DJ's snake really was excellent and likely pushed him over the top. Also, DJ's previous win was on Master Shop, so I'm OK with this being a solo win for him. Was the final choice a repeat of Anthony's win in reverse, where Dave broke the tie to give it to him? It felt like a familiar scenario.

Ugh.  Knew if I came here I could save myself an hour.  Josh did not deserve to be in the finale.  Not a Cleen or Christian fan so not sure I will tune in next season.  It seems like the more seasons go by the more it is just douches who think they are cool and more character like than actual people.

I hated all three of those Battle Royale tattoos.  I had a really difficult time distinguishing the three creatures in each one of them.

Thought the head tattoos were all pretty cool, though DJ's was the most interesting.

Could have done without the jury all yelling towards each other.  Did my girl Deanna even say anything?

I'm ok with Josh and DJ as the winners.  I think they're both douchenozzles, but probably no more than most of the other people on this show.

 

My favorite part of the whole show?  The over-exuberant person in the crowd that you can hear at the beginning prior to judging whose reaction to everything was a deep, loud, "YEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

They must have removed him from the crowd because once the judging started, no more.

Ugh.  No sooner than the words "two heavy hitters" came out of Dave's mouth than I said out loud, "Christian and Cleen" while executing a massive eye roll.   I like Cleen and, although I don't care for him personally, I thought Christian's Stravinsky tattoo was one of the best I've ever seen and I'm thoroughly sick of both of them.

As much as I hate DJ and his stupid snake obsession, I did have admit that his snake was the best.  Which it should have been.  I still hate that he won, because it validates his whiny ass self and his pissy attitude.  I also think that going clear down the back was cheating, because it was only supposed to be a head piece.  Then again, his protege went against the rules by making a chest piece go clear down the belly.  I really dislike people that think the rules don't apply to them and even moreso when they're rewarded for it.  I'm still salty about Krusemann.  (Can't remember how he spells it and don't care enough about him to look it up.)

I don't hate Josh but, aside from the above-mentioned rule breaking, that thing looked like a mess.  I dislike battle royales in general, because they always look Japanese-y and I don't care for that style of tattoo.  There's always so much of a mish mash of stuff in both that subject and the style.  Roly's was total cop out bush league stuff and I would have given it to Juan just for his symbolism with the entwined tails.

Ah good catch. Actually had it at 4 and then changed it to 3. Couldn't remember his team up with Aaron clearly. How could I ever forget the backward thumbs buddha!

Cleen and Christian are both really good. However, I agree with what some have said about being fed up with the douchey macho personalities. We're sure to get way too much chest puffing and yelling with those two around for the whole season. 

When Dave first started to intro a grudge match between rivals my mind actually went to Sausage and Matti. That would be a wayyyyyy more interesting combination for the season and would give them a chance to settle their tie (Sausage edging out Matti for 2nd in season 4 finale, Matti knocking out Sausage in a head to head in season 7). But hey, Cleen V4 will be fun too, right?!

Roly looked like a weepy deer in headlights. I wonder if he's been getting a lot of shit on social media. They made such a big point of saying how he DESERVED to be there. Uh, no, but it's not his fault the show cheated him to the finale.  

I didn't like any of the battle royales. Liked Steve's head piece the best. Steve also seems like he is a good natured guy when not being forced to perform Ink Master scripted drama.

Really a buzz kill to hear Dave Navarro, of Jane's Addiction, he who hangs from the ceiling on meat hooks, plead repeatedly: "No flipping!" everytime they cut to commercial.

This is the one of the only times that I didn't think Josh had the best tattoo of the night, but he ended up winning. Oh, well. He deserved it for his previous tattoo work, I suppose.

I can't stand DJ. He needs professional help for his outbursts.

This season finale makes me wonder why I watched the whole season. I think the tattoo I liked the most was Matt's bearded lady tattoo in the first episode.

I skipped forward the second I saw kleen. Didn't care the last four times. Don't care this time. GO AWAY. Christian can also go away. Why do they think we want to see more of these thoroughly unpleasant people?

Really disappointed with the finalist tattoos, might be the worst of the season finalist so far. None of them really jumped out to me. Though I think Josh was the strongest over the course of the season, I believe Juan's tattoo deserved the win in the end. Josh's was just crazy messy and hard to follow.  Roly got pushed past his expiration in the competition and it showed.

Of the coaches, I really liked both of Steve's and DJ's tattoos. Though I was rooting for him, Anthony's snake wasn't up to par and his head tattoo didn't have the same appeal as the others. Wouldn't have minded Steve winning, but DJ earned his victory for sure.

Next season...lets hope there's some good artist, because Clean Vs Christian feels played out and lame.

Let me start by saying I love this show.  Having said that I'm really starting to believe the show is somewhat rigged.   Roly in the finale????!!!!!     I give him an A+ on the army boots he did but that shark?    The shark he did was so anatomically off it was ridiculous.   Sharks are fish yet he gave it the tail of a mammal (it looks like a whale or dolphin tail).   Am I the only one who noticed that?   And that's just one of too many to count issues wrong with that so called shark.   Then lets talk about that pinup he did.   You know the one with the broken neck and so many anatomically wrong body parts that you would need a slide rule to catch them all.    The producers of this show obviously wanted each coach to have one member from their team in the finale.   There's no other way to logically justify Roly in the finale.    Rigged.

 

The contestant finale:  let me state first I have no dog in this fight.   I just try to look at each piece and fairly judge them.   Roly proved why he should not have been there by completely missing the challenge.   He had a green dogs head (did you see the nose on that thing) an eagle head and something that loosley resembled a snake.  Where was the battle royale?    A complete miss.   As previously stated by others Josh's tattoo was utterly unreadable.   A total mess.   Whether standing close or at a distance you can't decipher anything in this piece.   Only after staring at it for 20 minutes can you begin to see the three creatures.   Then you can begin to see how poorly they were done.  The eagle???   This head of this thing is a chicken if I have ever seen one.   And what eagle has feather's like that?    For that matter what bird has feather's like that?    The snake was a mess and was the same size as the dragon which also was a mess.   Do snake tongues really look like that?   And why all the muted pastel colors?   Did his piece display the three way battle royale?    Who know's it's unreadable!!    Juan's piece had it's issues as well.   The eagle was done well but the dragon and snake not so much.   The dragon was too small and looked about as ferocious as a kitten.   Snake's don't have teeth like sharks but Juan missed that day in school.   And again as with Josh's snake what's with that tongue??!!  There was no 3 way battle royale here it was the eagle fighting the other two.   One positive note on Juan's was you could distinguish the three combatants.   I wouldn't want to wear any one of these tattoos.   I honestly don't think any of them were that good.  It was a weak final.   But I think the clear winner here was Juan followed by Josh with Roly bringing up the rear.   I get judging tattoo's is subjective but there is no way you can tell me Josh's tattoo beat out Juan's.   Rigged.

 

The Master's finale:  Again let me preface my comments by saying I am not partial to any one of these three.  The judging of the snake tattoo's should have gone   1. Steve  2. DJ  3. Anthony.   Anthony clearly had the weakest piece (why would anyone tattoo a snake with the mouth closed not showing the fangs?).   The dagger was also not done well and what was the point of the cresent moon?   And why wasn't the snake wrapped around the dagger instead of being coiled in front of it?    Both DJ and Steve did awesome snakes.   Steve put the wierd "glass" hand in his but he did it well and the snake interacted with it.   DJ put a red ball behind the snake and some yellow thing that who knows what that was having the snake not interacting with either "thing".   Steve clearly won this.   The head tattoo's.  First let me say they all three did awesome jobs.   Having said that they need to be critiqued fairly which the judges did not do.  Anthony again had the weakest piece.  The eagle on top of the head looks washed out.  The female head has black in it but the male counterpart on the oher side again looks washed out.   The exact opposite with the small heads above the ears (you can't tell me the one with glasses doesn't look like Mr. T) one was washed out the other had black in it.   DJ packed the color in his and it popped.   The skull and the mask on top of the head both done extremely well.   The blue flowery mess spreading out down the shoulders and back looks completely out of place and kills this piece.   I mean it looks bad.   Not only does it not fit with the piece it has blowouts (how can you give the title to someone when their piece has blowouts???!!!).   Steve's piece was done extremely well.  Not only that it fit the head perfectly.    No blowouts, no washed out areas.   So, if these pieces had been judged fairly by the judges (clearly if you have watched the show from the first season you know this is not the first time an artist has been robbed) the clear winner should have been Steve with DJ in second place and Anthony third.   If DJ had followed the guidlines and just done the head piece without the blue mess then it would have been a difficult choice betweem he and Steve.   But by trying to go bigger than the other two (and not following the guidlines, see Josh) he actually shot himself in the foot with a terrible blue mess completely out of place with the head piece and with blowouts.    Steve was eliminated first!!!???     You can probably make a case for DJ's piece (although with that blue mess running down the back with blowouts I do question how) but there is no way Anthony's tattoo's, the snake or the head piece, were better than Steve's, no way.  Rigged.

I think it's clear both Steve and Juan were robbed.   As I stated at the beginning I do love this show but the lack of fair critques is becoming annoying.

The judge’s tattoos-

Steve’s were good but I am not a fan of the “ooooo so evil” style.

Anthony’s snake was weak but his head piece was pretty spectacular 

For me DJ did a great job on both of his pieces and deserved that win.

 

As for the contestants I feel that Rolly was not in contention so it really was done to Juan and Josh. Both were well done but aesthetically I really preferred Juan’s. Won’t complain about the win for Josh but I would have gone the other way.

I wish they'd let them showcase the work and quit it with the constant arguing and drama.  It's why we stopped watching most USA reality television and watch more UK/NZ/AU reality.  So much more pleasant and on a lot of the shows the producers don't feel the need to amp the drama/fighting.

Where do we think Josh ranks on the list of Ink Master Champions?

I think it's fair to say that he's behind: DJ, Joey, Scott, and Steve

and ahead of: Bubba, Kruseman, and Jason

That leaves him somewhere around Anthony and Ryan. 

I'm not sure where to rank Shane since he won a very different season 1 and hasn't been back 

So I suppose I would personally have Josh ranked as the 6-7 best Ink Master out of the 11.

I went to the ink master website to have another look at the battle royale tattoos.  On closer inspection of Josh's tattoo check out the dragons mouth.  Its biting the snake but its lower jaw looks like its about twice as long as the upper jaw and goes all the way around the snakes body.  Am I seeing this wrong or does it look really weird to other people?

The dragon is definitely rocking the underbite of the century 

I still can't get over how unreadable that tattoo is. The top and bottom of the tattoo is a complete mess of twists and turns, the dragon claw poking out at the very bottom looks hilariously bad, and even with a close-up, I'm still struggling to find any of that "breathing room" the judges spoke of--that tattoo is wall to wall packed. 

The ONLY part of the tattoo that I think is cool is how Josh matched the color palette of the guy's right arm tattoos. Gives his body a very cohesive look.

It's a fight between a parrot, an eel, and a dragon with no anatomy and the head of a schnauzer. A battle royale indeed!!

It's almost so bad that it looks intentionally bad.

That wouldn't matter if the snake were actually drawn with some volume. It literally looks flat, as if it has no ribcage. The worst place for me is upper right of the image (left on the actual guy). I thought maybe it was just how it sat on the guy's collarbone but it looks like that everywhere it loops back. I actually like the colorscheme because it matches the rest of the guy's ink. It's just drawn like he had no idea how to make any of the stuff look like anything other than ribbons.

I guess I don't qualify as an official fan/commenter/whatever anymore, because I just had to give up on this season round about the hot air balloon tattoo. Or whatever it was.  I had a bad feeling on DJ winning, and fuck if I wasn't right on that one...which I do not agree with at all, not only the tattoos, but I always thought Steve/Anthony were much better, and I hate when shows "show" up the newer ppl. for newer viewers.  My husband, who has put up with and watched with me for years, came out at one point and said "Christ, they turned this into a straight up reality show".  Agreed.  I had a lot of hope at the start of this season and you know what?  I'll try out the next one.  I've missed every single recent season of all my shows so what better way to start over?  PS- That dragon tattoo above?  Would have been taken OUT by the judges season ago.  Either I'm out of practice, or it is a mess......see you all next season, and I WILL be there, if just to make awful uninformed comments!

I finally watched the episode.  I will say that as far as Ink Master live finales go, this was probably the best.  There was so much less filler than usual.  I could actually hear and see what we were supposed to hear and see.  Okay, that's the positive.

And then there was the winner.  Wow.  Josh's battle royale tattoo is terrible.  I froze the screen to stare at it because I couldn't find all three creatures.  Throughout the season Josh did some really good work.  This was not it.  That was a mess.  Juan's wasn't perfect but at least it was readable.  The colors popped and it was fit to the body well.  

For the masters, DJ's snake was the best for me.  I found myself agreeing with the things the judges were saying during the decision-making.  The top of DJ's head tattoo was really dramatic, but he overshot what he could accomplish well within the timeframe.  Unfortunately for the "canvas", the parts people will see the most were the parts with problems.  So DJ or Anthony; it could have gone either way for me.

I didn't hate any of the head tattoos, but I preferred Anthony's. Of the live tattoos, DJ's was by far the best. So, all things considered, I didn't hate that decision...except that I hate DJ.

As for Josh, I couldn't argue that Juan had zero problems, so I can't really get too angry at that decision, either. I preferred Juan's, but it wasn't an egregious decision. Again, I just don't like Josh. 

As for next season, I just can't deal with fucking Cleen and the guaranteed tough guy drama. This is my favorite show, but I may sit it out next season.

I missed this part, what is next seasons theme?  Frankly, I'm shocked there IS a next season.  Though, if we're starting off with Cleen again.......oh, my.

They called it grudge match or something similar.  They had Cleen and Christian come out and try and talk tough about how they are not afraid of each other.  So it could be another rivals season.

You would be surprised. I think Ink Master, like most shows, uses social media   (especially Twitter) as a way to gauge fan interests and reactions. The support for just that show down is high on social media. I am one of the few dissenters when I discuss it outside this forum. 

 

There are definitely contestants who hate that kind of thing. We know Heather Sinn did. Anthony told me on Facebook Live that he and many of the tattooists hate it. But there appears to be a large, vocal segment of the viewers who love it. It's one reason I am glad that I follow the show and some contestants on Twitter. You get a better understanding of why the show does this. It actually is appealing to many viewers for unknown reasons.

I think my biggest problem with it is that one person now will have four chances to become Ink Master. I mean Jason beating Cleen the first time was one hundred percent Cleen being too arrogant to follow directions. I know this haunts him, but it is not like he was cheated.  Anyway, obviously Cleen is pretty popular on Social Media, so I guess that is why this is happening.

Look, I like Cleen, and I like Christian, I really do.  I can think of many others that I couldn't stand on a much higher level.  BUT I really don't need to see them.  Again.  I don't need another Rivals season.  I know I'm in the minority, but I really miss the earlier days of this show, and I still don't get why it can't just be more like the original format as opposed to the maximizing the drama format.  Oh, wait, yes I do.  I'm old! ;)  Now get off my lawn.

I did forget to add that both Cl. and Ch. ( I have no more time for typing) are very talented, and I did think were shafted in some of their original appearances.  However, I stand behind my post above.  But yet, I'll be back for at least a few episodes, and that makes me certifiable.

I think if Cleen knew of "The final tattoo is the only one that matters criteria" he was not cheated. It was more so that he gave the win to Jason (who is not nearly as talented) because he did not follow directions. If he did not realize it or it was not explained to him properly then I am fully on board that not giving him the win was unfair.  I also thought Christian's final ballerina tattoo was beautiful and delightfully unexpected.

We could be here all day, and have been, debating who should have won, etc.  For the record, in the first go round, I did not think Jason should have won but Cleen's final tat was clearly not what was laid out for his challenge.  At any rate, all I want to see are talented artists doing their best.  Period.  And not for nothing I am WAY less than impressed with this Paramount channels offerings.  I honestly didn't think IM was even coming back given what airs currently.  Anywho, I would really like to stay up well past my bedtime watching something that is worth it!  I forget if I said this before, but my son, who has watched many a show with me IM, Face Off, etc.  came in and saw me typing and said "they ought to just call it *BLEEP* Master.  That says a lot to me, since we've watched since S1!  I shall support as long as I can though................
