Season 2: Homicide hires Paul Cicero?

Those that have seen Goodfellas will get the title. The movie came out a year before Paul Sorvino joined the cast, replacing George Dzundza, who left after the first season.

We also got Dr. Elizabeth Olivet, who we all KNOW did more than help Mike through grief counseling after Max was murdered!

I suppose because there was no SVU yet, our guys also investigated non-homicide cases.

In Casa Gracie, he was, is and forever will be known as Big Paulie.  It generally works for whatever he's in and IF his character isn't named Paul, there's always his real name.

I caught a rerun of "Blood Is Thicker..." the other day -- the one where the wife of a rich family was killed by her psycho husband because she was cheating on him and Stone needed the married doctor she was sleeping with to testify but he was quibbling because he was married.  I always get so annoyed with the doctor: he went on about how he would have married the lady if "things had been different" but was terrified of losing his family.  Well he should have thought about that before he cheated on her.  So glad she filed for divorce at the end because quite frankly he had it coming.

"The Wages of Love" is on WE. there's so much to love about this episode. Shirley Knight is great; we get our first sighting of Jerry Orbach (though not as Briscoe); and there is some great dialogue.

Cragen: You two wanna re-open the case because the kid used the wrong tense?

Say whaaat????

WE is messed up. According to the schedule, "The Serpent's Tooth" is supposed to be on, but in fact, "God Bless The Child" is on instead! Not that I'm complaining per se, because I do love this episode and want to throw the parents down a mine shaft, but "The Serpent's Tooth" is also a favorite, dammit!

Oh and "The Secret Sharers" from season one was supposed to be on before this one, but it was also a season two episode! I'm blanking on the title.

"The Serpent's Tooth" aired this afternoon. For some reason (not complaining as I love early L&O) without notice, the Mothership was on today since 10:00 a.m. with CI airing tomorrow instead, so it raced through the rest of S1 and S2 began at the usual 6:00 p.m. slot.

One would think they could at least make sure the correct titles were listed! That is my point; because like I also posted above, not complaining, since everyone who knows me knows the the Stone years are my absofavorite years, plus Jack's first. Hell, let's just say the Logan years.

I watched Blue Wall and Confession last night, in the opening credits of Blue Wall.  they spelled Carolyn McCormick's (Dr. Olivet) wrong.  Carloyn.  I've seen her name a million times and thought.  Naw, they couldn't have done that, and then in the next episode, it was spelled right.  I may be wrong on which episodes they were, I watched like 5 last night, but I'm in the ball park.  Opening credit were when Max's casket was being carried of the church.

UGH. Just finished watching "Helpless" and Melnick is just so...vile. I couldn't watch her scenes where she's cross-examining Liz. She might as well have been a man, showing such disrespect for Liz, refusing to call her Dr. Olivet, and accusing her of playing 'slap and tickle' with that rapist.  And I couldn't listen to him getting off on raping her either, with those moans and groans. {SHUDDER}

Poor Mike. Watching this episode, after that one episode in the 18th season, when we learn that Michael was the detective Liz got involved with--BUT ONLY AFTER she was finished treating him, and they were no longer doctor/patient, and I remember wishing Noth had made an appearance and cold-cocked McCoy for allowing Cutter to use it against Liz out of spite because she wouldn't say what he wanted her to say on the stand--I can see it in Noth's performance, that there was more than a professional relationship between them. I remember, back on TWoP, after we saw that 18th season episode, we were all like "Mike and Liz DID it!" Yes, we were juveniles, but I felt vindicated, because I'd always thought there was something more between them.

Ahem.

I know that Melnick was just doing her job, but she didn't have to take such gleeful pleasure in tearing Liz down. I really loathe her.

Now to the quotes thread, for that awesome scene at the end.

I liked Olivet and Logan a lot, but even with Olivet done treating Logan, that just...never sat well with me, that little tidbit. At that time, Liz was still working in concert with the NYPD and Logan was still involved there.

It's my issue, so it isn't necessarily a condemnation per se, but considering their positions still what they were and they had no way of knowing if Liz would have to treat him again (which she sort of did on CI, unofficially)...yeah.

If Logan was no longer a cop and Liz no longer a shrink? I would have no issue. But I also understand the "why" in context it happened, so there's that.

Eh. I didn't have any problem with it, since she wasn't his shrink, exclusively.  And should the need for another session come around, I figure Mike would have gone to someone else.

Is it any worse than the relationship between Jack and Claire? Since he was her boss?

And just saw "Prince of Darkness" and I know this was Sorvino's exit story, but the show couldn't find anyone else to play his wife? They had to use the actress who played Masucchi's wife? Really? I would have accepted Edie Falco! Felicity Huffman, since they were dipping into actors that already appeared on the show. *sniff*

Also saw "Self-Defense" last night, and this is an episode that doesn't put Sorvino in a positive light. His insistence that Costas was in the right to shoot and kill Booker and Gardner just turned me off. Really, Paulie?

And I have a question to any posters here who are Greek--was the accent Adam Arkin's Costas authentic? Or was it a bad attempt? I've always wanted to know.  Thanks!

Jack/Claire never entered my mind, but they're wrong, too. To contrast, I get why on some shows partners get it on, but that is basically an "equal" relationship, where Jack/Claire and patient/shrink relationships have subordinate/ethical issues going on.

But again, as I said, that was my issue.

It's also Mike who says, "Why am I the one who feels like taking a shower?" to Phil once they find out Liz is in the hospital after being assaulted. Because she had told them that the disgusting doctor had molested her before, but they couldn't get enough evidence or something, and he blamed himself because she went back there.

Re Melnick: I did wonder why she was so aggro towards Liz while she was on the stand. I mean, I get defending your client, even if he is a filthy pig, but there was something really distasteful about watching her seem almost happy to have the chance to badger Olivet that way. Like, way beyond what the script would have called for.

Caught "Blood is Thicker" last night. Shocked to recognize the killer husband as Todd from Trading Places. That hair...yikes!!

As I said in other threads, I have nothing but contempt for the murdered wife's married douche lover. All that hemming and hawing about "I couldn't leave my wife, she'd never survive", and yet she had no problem divorcing his wimpy, cheating loser ass at the end. Ha!!!

With the recent talk about Jerry Orbach's pre-Lennie Briscoe role, Frank Lehrman, I am somewhat amused at the irony that "Wages of Love" is airing tonight at 8 on WE. So if there is anyone here who has not seen Orbach as a defense attorney, there's your chance!

And how sick of "we were married for 25 years" did I get with the wife saying it 50 million times?

Ugh that woman was such a whiny bitch. Not to mention she nearly threw her son under the bus to try to get away with killing his father. Too bad Ben didn't wait for the jury verdict, but then there was no way of telling if they'd convict.

You know who DOES deserve sympathy for her marriage ending? Marie Greevey. Married a great guy like Max only to wind up helplessly watching him be gunned down.

Well, at the very end of the episode, one of the jurors being interviewed basically said they were leaning towards conviction. Ben should have taken his chances. And I agree. She was whiny. Younger woman or not, I am sad to say (not getting to know the hubby - maybe he was a douche) I could see why the hubby would look elsewhere. Take away my feminism card there.

Just recalled that dead hubby was crying poor while keeping the apartment both lived in, etc. and giving jewelry to the mistress. Okay, so he was likely a douche. But I still get why he was divorcing the wife!

Sadly, I recognize the actor, Benjamin Hendrickson, playing Doug Phillips' defense attorney. He was a soap actor on As The World Turns for ages. He committed suicide back in 2006.

And, hey! The actor playing the son, Jamie, played the junkie heir in "Smothered" on L&O: CI in Season 1. (And was in "Maltese Cross" in S6.) Another franchiser.

ETA: Some of these quiz questions require no brain cells! (Asking about Briscoe's first season on the show...) And besides the "We were married for 25 years" bit in this episode, if there was a drinking game every time Adam would yell, "Take a deal!" throughout the series, we'd be in the hospital with alcohol poisoning.  :-)

I didn't feel sorry for her BECAUSE he was a douche. Lots of woman would have gotten over it and taken the opportunity to reevaluate her life, but instead she simpered and whined and sniveled and obsessed over him even long AFTER she killed him. You can only play the victim card so much before it becomes pathetic.

Oh, no argument here. That was just, more or less, clarifying my prior post since I said we didn't know if the hubby was a douche. He was. But as you say, life goes on. And she knew he wanted out and had a new girlfriend, so...yeah. And, as said, she used their son. I wish she got the full 25 years.

Hendrickson appeared on the Mothership again in 1997, the episode Denial. Then he portrayed the father of a girl whose newborn baby died after she gave birth in a hotel room with her boyfriend in attendance. Then they went to a frat party and danced to 'their song'.

I remember reading about the actual case this was based upon. The real song danced to was "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica. Eerie.

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought she was a whiny bitch. I couldn't figure out why everyone thought she would get off or convincing Ben to make a deal. I'm a woman and would have had no problem convicting her. She clearly planned out her crime and then shot two people to death. Yes, it was her husband who was cheating on her, and yeah he was douche. But that's still no excuse for planning out and shooting him and his girlfriend to death, or almost throwing her own son under the bus.   Every time she talked about being married 25 years all I could think was lady, you shot two people to death.

And he was a baddie on two separate episodes of SVU - a murderous con man banker in the first season and a sleezy porn producer who didn't care that his performers got AIDS in a later season.

"Jamie" and that Indian guy you see all over the place could be franchises unto themselves.  I too wanted to yell at her to enter a displaced homemaker program.  Retool that resume and go!

I consider myself as someone not easily offended, but that line I bolded really bothers me. I think you mean Asif Mandvi, who has shown up on all three franchises. It isn't difficult to search and find out an actor's name.  Mandvi is best known for being the correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He was also in the first Spider-Man movie with Toby McGuire. And is a comedian in his own right.

I don't want to get too off-topic, but if you replace the word Indian, with another ethnic name, you can see where that would lead. And full-disclosure, as someone of East-Indian descent, I did find it offensive. There are so many other ways to identify him-or anyone else who appeared numerous times on this show- that have been used like HITG! (Hey, it's that guy!)

I don't mean to be argumentative, but just wanted to point out why it bothered me.

I don't find the "white guy" or black guy  offensive either- they're both male and of that ethnicity, so I'm not on the page, but it was not that actor.  I was referring to the brother in "World's Fair."

Random observation - WE is showing the Cerreta-era episodes, and for all that Logan was considered the hot tempered one, I would be more worried about having Cerreta looming in the background without saying a word. Mike might grab and shake you, but Phil's intimidating just standing there. No wonder Sorvino is so good at playing gangsters.

I watched "Cradle to Grave" this week, and besides the great performances from all of the guest actors, I enjoyed seeing Logan and Cerreta being so emotionally involved with the mystery behind the baby's death. They really cared about the citizens of New York--they weren't just doing their jobs. And yeah. Logan was a hot head.

Mike Logan being a hothead is only one of the things I ❤️ about him!
