S04.E13: Release the Hounds

I love Tandy and Carol together anyway, but yeah, they can be so cute yet so gross. xD

So there was a time-jump in this one -- some 6-7 months. And by having Carol get pregnant again, they found a way to incorporate KSchaal's real-life pregnancy. :)

Overall, I thought this was more sweet than funny, especially with Melissa trying to help Todd, and Erica eventually having a change of heart after finding her old baby picture of herself with her family. (I did have to wonder where Jasper was in all of this, but then he's apparently supposed to be in next Sunday's episode, "Special Delivery"...)

Apparently Todd completely forgot about Jasper during the timejump -- and Jasper has not returned to the house in all that time.

I really dislike what they are doing with the Todd character -- he used to be a likable level-headed person, and now he's all over the place.

Apparently no one new showed up during the timejump either.

If not for the fact that Kirsten Schaal is actually pregnant, I'd speculate we were heading for a plotline where she loses the baby. Everything's been going suspiciously well on that front, you know? Obviously there's no way you could make that funny, but this show has a habit of doing not-funny stuff just when you're starting to relax into the comedy.

ew. ick. I actually had to change the channel during the whole Carol/Tandy beginning scene.  Just. couldn't. watch.  They really take cringeworthy to a whole new level.

Glad to know KS is actually pregnant, as it makes the new story line make a little more sense.  And I appreciated a jump in time.  Funny how everyone else keeps the same hair style and length except for Todd.  Even Tandy's ungroomed mess remains in the same state of ungroomed mess.

Jasper.  Why even keep him as a character at this point?  Can't some other family appear and then take him with them?  I don't want him to die - that would be too cruel, even for this show - but find a kind way to write him off.

I'm a little surprised someone in the group - Gail would be the most likely since she has some medical background - hasn't brought up the whole genetic diversity thing as a way to convince Melissa to have a kid with Todd.  That would at least produce three groups of kids with totally different parents.

Everything involving Tandy and Carol having sex in this episode was somehow MORE disturbing than the entire Fred Armisen as a cannibal storyline!

Personally I think Todd is being a huge baby. Someone needs to remind him he's living a post-apocalyptic world and it's no longer realistic to expect "normal" things like fatherhood. Having a baby in this world is potentially a life-ending medical process. Sure, Erica and Carol have managed to give birth without incident but let's not press our luck. There are only six (grown) people left in the world, as far as they know - so there are already three babies Todd can help raise. Why does he need to have one of his own?

I thought it was notable that they didn't even consider asking Carol to carry Todd's baby. Obviously, since she was already pregnant, that wouldn't have worked, but Todd didn't know that when he asked Erica and Erica declined.

In addition to what iMonrey said, I also think it's actually pretty terrifying to bring children into the world where they will very likely wind up dying alone. And I don't even mean "without mates" -- I mean with literally no one around, whatsoever.

I like Jasper. I wish he would come back.

As far as Todd knew, Carol and Tandy might very well have more babies together, so he probably would have felt weird asking for that.  Especially as there had been that plotline about donor sperm for Carol before Tandy impregnated her.

Plus, if it had only been two weeks since Carol gave birth, he might have thought it was too soon to ask her to consider another pregnancy.  (Although clearly not.)

I'll go ahead and say it, I missed Tandy and Carol's sex talk and was amused by it all.

I'm sure people realize this.  But if Melissa doesn't want to have a kid for a man she loves, I highly doubt the logic of genetic diversity is going to convince her to go through a pregnancy.

I love that Melissa is sticking to her decision, and no one is pressuring her about it.

Good point. :) Also, I liked that Erica was given time to eventually come around to Melissa's suggestion -- on her own terms, for her own personal reason (wanting Dawn to have a sibling).

I thought it was kinda funny this time that they went into "restaurant" talk (a bit of a departure from their past "camping" motif, as well as their "bedroom" talk while they were on an actual camping trip in s.3). :D

I'm still amused by Carol and Tandy, I like that they are a happy married couple on TV and that we watched them get to that place. Their sexy talk didn't bother at me in the slightest.

And if not for the apocalypse, they likely never would have found each other, yet they were clearly meant to be together!

Back in Season 1 there was sort of a running gag about how they had to repopulate the whole planet, but it was mostly about Tandy wanting to get laid. They haven't really discussed with any seriousness their responsibility for repopulation. Which, let's be realistic, is neither likely nor practical.

I thought Carol and Tandy were going to offer Todd their new baby. I mean, that sounds kind of weird -- on THIS show?!? -- because I didn't think that Todd was particular about the baby having HIS genes; he just wanted to be a father. Maybe it would be difficult for Carol or Tandy to even share parenting responsibility for their own child, but that could simply figure into future episodes.

I liked Todd's train setup, esp how it started so simple then evolved into stuff like a T-Rex eating a person.

I liked the little joke about Gail giving up drinking... red wine.

Carol and Tandy's sex talk and sex play was funny and sometimes gross, but I love that this is what they both want.

Kirsten Schaal killed it this episode for me. I really think she's a great comic actor. The garbanzo bean bit had me almost falling off the sofa.

My only criticism is the ending of the show has gotten too predictable. There's a mysterious hand or head or something that comes into frame and we cut to the credits. I know the show is on the bubble, but come on...let's get moving toward a resolution!
