Okay Danneel, do you even know your husband's character LOL. I think she was trying to be funny but telling Jensen "Don't slice up any of our customers" tells me she thinks Dean is still a demon and I guess a killer. WTF? That's so weird.

I think she was just making a joke.  He does lop off a lot of heads in his day job, so I think she was referring to that.

Yes, that's why I said I think she was  trying to be funny. It's a joke but a weird one that I was like...ohhhkay.. I mean you'd think the joke would have been "we don't need any monsters coming her for Dean to kill". But it was like Jensen was going to slice up the regular customers. I mean I'm not angry or anything about it. Maybe it's a long running inside joke between Jensen and Danneel or something. It was peculiar is all I'm saying. That's it. I'm not bashing her before any one comes at me.

I didn't think you were bashing anyone.  I think it was just a joke that sort of fell flat.  They both seemed almost a bit uncomfortable when talking about Jensen's day job.  Obviously, they know that's going to be the draw, at least at the beginning.  Especially for the non-locals.  But I think they've worked really hard to get this thing up and running and want it to be more than just an extension of fandom.  Not that they don't want fans to come, but that they want them to come for the right reasons.

It was definitely an awkward interview.  I think they are in a tricky spot. It's sounds like the name legitimately wasn't really intended to be tied to SPN initially. The thing is that now they are kind of trading on the SPN side beyond just Jensen being a co-owner, with the "Serving People...Fermented Things" angle. So if they are going with that I see no good reason for them to not play up the Jensen connection at first. Jared can't be included here because he's got the bar and that's a state regulation that bar owners can't be legally involved in the manufacture of the beer I think. He got a letter from state when he was making a wine for Stephen Amell. So that's why Jared isn't involved in the PR

If they want to expand distribution, they need all the good will and taste buds on it they can. I think they really should just be like yes "Come for SPN/Jensen, stay for the beer. Come back again for the beer, which will always be here even if Jensen is not".

I'm not familiar with breweries but are they a family experience?  I mean it is basically a steel and concrete structure with a few picnic tables outside and what sounds like a freeway within a few feet.  How much fun is that going to be for the kids to run around "outside" while mom and dad get drunk?  Unless the beer is out of this world I can't see a lot of traffic (other than those hoping for a Jensen sighting) in the long run.  They must be counting on sales to local restaurants and bars.

This is from a non drinker that lives about 20 min from the Budweiser brewery that I've never been too.  So I really have no idea.

These kinds of small/quaint breweries are generally are family-friendly. People don't come in to get drunk, but sample some fancy beer and eat and just hang out for a bit. It's like visiting a winery except they make beer not wine.

It’s definitely a social thing in Austin. It’s very hipstery and lots of young families will hang out when the weather is nice. In fairness most parents aren’t getting drunk. They’re trying a beer or two with friends while the kids run around and play. If the brewery has a playscape and an open area for younger kids to chase each other, I think they’ll do well. Especially if the beer is good.

Thanks.  I am sure it will be successful then since they are family people.

It's a social thing everywhere, in truth.

And the beer being good is key, in all honesty-which makes their choice of a head brewer their most important choice, IMO. I hope that he's both knowledgable and innovative in his field. That will make all the difference where it regards success in this endeavor, again IMO. And I wish them all the best in that. As a beer lover, I'd love to visit them, but it would take some time for me to come up with the funds for a trip of that magnitude-again, for me.

But I'd go in a heartbeat if the funds were immediately available because Beer makes everything Better for me. ;-D

I don't like beer.  I don't like the taste, I don't like the smell, I don't like the gassy, But it would be great if Danneel opened a winery next door with similar amenities. I'd be all over that. LOL.

Oh, now that would be amazing. I'm not into beer either even though my husband makes it. I only like basically fruity beer with no taste :)

Jensen and Danneel's brewery does have a playground for kids.  There was a picture of JJ playing on it some time back.

About Supernatural at the TCAs.  Not exactly surprising.

It's always the caveat, if the ratings hold. I'd really like to know what is the threshold for the ratings to be a cancellation point for this show. Is it dropping below the DCTV shows in total? Would it take Dynasty level ratings? That's the question I've always wanted to ask. LOL

Of course I want the show to go on forever.  However, the Js deciding they don't want to continue puts a lot of guilt on their shoulders as they would be putting friends out of work. OTOH failing ratings is not a good end to an epic show either.  I don't want Supernatural  to go out with a whimper.

I'd rather TPTB made the decision - "season 14 will be the final season" (for example)

Hmm. You’re right. Makes me wonder if J2 are negotiating for something TPTB don’t necessarily want to give them. They could be applying a little public pressure.

I was having a similar thought but I didn't want to say it. I think it's a catch -22. Maybe this is part of negotiating the end of the show or shortening the seasons a bit? I don't know.

The key here is IF the ratings hold and IF the boys want to continue. So I still think both things must hold true.  So maybe it's a strategy for both the network and the boys to make sure eyeballs are on the show as they negotiate the end game?

Link to comment

They are clearly negotiating some different items than just two years, X money because in a con last year Jensen said they are looking into different scenarios. I think the shortened season is probably it.

In one con Jensen said that he and Jared had recently made a decision on when it would end but didn't say what obviously. I can't remember which one so I am going back through the 2017 cons to try to find it.

Pedowitz talks about the spin off.

Quote

I’ve seen it, I like it but the fans determine,” Pedowitz said. While the first attempt at a Supernatural spinoff, Bloodlines, “did not work at all, this one has an opportunity to work,” he said. “Nothing is perfect but the real question is whether fans will go watch it if the boys aren’t in it. I don’t know but it works, the characters work, Kathryn Newton is a real star, the actress who plays Donna (Briana Buckmaster) is hilarious.”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Interesting comments from Pedowitz about Kathryn Newton. I don't think I was too far off in saying she's going to be the lead assuming she doesn't leave for greener pastures.

One of the sturdiest CW ratings performer — linearly and digitally — has been veteran Supernatural, currently in its 13th season. It’s become a TCA tradition to check on the future prospects of the series, which has repeatedly defied expectations.

Noting that he and his CW team are not ready to announce renewal decisions yet, “next year would be Supernatural‘s 300th episode which is remarkable,” Pedowitz told Deadline. “That show will go on as long as it keeps going, the boys (stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) keep doing it and the ratings keep holding.”

This season, Supernatural is also tasked with introducing a potential spinoff, Wayward Sisters, starring the original series’ standout Kim Rhodes in an episode that airs a week from Thursday.

I can see Kathryn signing on for a while.  Yes, she's been in a few mainstream things lately, but her parts haven't been all that large.  Big Little Lies was the largest part, and she literally had one very short scene in 3 Billboards.  This would be a steady gig, so I can see her signing on.  I don't think she's that great an actress, so I'm not sure just how far she could go in movies.  This may end up being a good decision for her, if the show gets picked up.  I'm still on the fence as to whether I'll watch.  I don't see it drawing me in if I weren't already familiar with the characters, and even with that, I'm not all that excited about it.  If we could have whatever spin off we wanted, I'd rather watch Bobby and Rufus.

Honestly, I hope there are more comments coming out of that interview because that sure doesn't sit quite well with me.  If the spinoff fails that won't be on Kim or anyone else. It will fail because of the writing. Not the acting that's for sure.

I’ve said it before but the spin off is doomed to fail because large portions of the SPN fandom aren’t receptive to a spin off, any spin off. The bi-bro fans who watch just for the brothers, the Dean girls who watch just for Dean and the Sam girls who watch just for Sam take and therefore won’t watch something without their favourite(s) in it take up too large a portion of the audience between them for it to work.

ETA: Who knows, though, maybe Kathryn has more power than anyone right now with her resume.  Or maybe I'm reading that wrong and Pedowitz is saying Kathryn is a real star and she'll be leaving the nest.

It's just kind of a strange comment. I hope something else is missing in that report.

In that article I posted above about Kathryn, I thought this was curious

Quote

I remember I was working on Big Little Lies at the time, and I kind of had to fight for the role. I was working on one set, so I had to go to Jean-Marc [Vallée] and say, “Hey, Jean-Marc, remember that audition — you let me go meet the director on my lunch break? Well I booked it, so now can you move dates around for Big Little Lies so I can go shoot this in Asheville, North Carolina?” It was kind of a really great experience for me, because not only did I have to fight really hard just in my audition, but then I had to fight really hard to get the dates cleared out. So it was a really great experience for me as a person, just learning how to get what you want, and just as an artist to fight for a rol

Does she have that kind of power with the spinoff? If it gets picked up can she be the one that dictates the filming dates or is this telling us that maybe SPN isn't going to be so flexible? I don't know it's odd for sure.

Eh, I think that will have much less impact than you're suggesting. I think most fans (bibros, Sam and Dean and Castiel fans will tune in) so the ratings I think will be even with the rest of the season. Especially since it is the midseason premiere. I don't think ratings will be the SOLE reason for the spinoff getting a pick up or not. I think critical reception and social media chatter will matter as much as the actual ratings.

Sorry, I should have clarified. I mean if the spin off is picked up to series it is destined to flop from the start due to the fan base issues I mentioned :). I’d agree with you the ratings will probably remain around the 0.5 - 0.6 mark for the Backdoor pilot.

I don't think he's saying she's THE star of the show. Most times in Hollywood when they says so and so's a real star they mean it more flowery....oh she's got IT.

Of course if the Network and EPs think she's A Star and other studios keep booking her for projects then the EPs might end up making her THE star.

A good example of this is EBR on Arrow, went from 1 time guest star, to recurring guest star, to series regular, to female lead/main Love Interest. Not that she become THE star of Arrow but, she has IT and the EPs, actors, Network and fans all saw it, so she went from guest star to a main lead.

No I didn't mean the star of SPN but the star of Wayward Sisters should it get to series.

His only comment about WS is about Kathryn Newton and Briana being "hilarious" ?

Yeah I'm not expecting the backdoor pilot to be an accurate representation of the spin-off at all. Whether or not it helps critical reception remains to be seen, however what we've heard lately really doesn't fill me with confidence.

Right, that's the show I'm talking about. I don't think he was saying she's THE lead of Wayward Sisters just using that typical Hollywood speak. X is a Real Star, they're going to be huge...it's just Hollywood talk, IMO.

What I found interesting is Pedowitz's comments were more about a couple actresses and not the show. Doesn't bode well for the show itself, IMO.

I also think he's trying to use Katheryn's "hot" factor right now to sell the new show. Which could backfire on him considering that Claire is a very contentious character in fandom as it is. He may end up alienating more fans than he hooks with it.

What stuck out to me is the "Nothing is perfect" comment.  I reminds me of Briana tweeting something about how it might not be what fans are expecting and she hopes people will give it a chance.

It makes me question if Pedowitz might have seen something that regular fans might not like or be willing to overlook.   I know there some criticism of how Dean was portrayed in the last ep, it makes me wonder if Pedowitz read some of them.
