The Cast: News, Interviews and Articles

Like Maggie's note to Glenn this can be the place to share interviews and articles about the show. I just read that a Walking Dead Companion show has been greenlit from AMC. Read more about it here.

The still-untitled series was previously rumored to be a prequel that would focus on the events that led up to the main series' apocalyptic storyline. But neither the network nor the producers have hinted at what the show will be about other than the fact that it won't technically be a "spinoff" since it won't feature characters from The Walking Dead TV series. Uproxx theorizes that the new series will be set in the same apocalypse timeline. Last year, creator Robert Kirkman confirmed that the show will feature an entirely new cast and location, but offered little else.

I read an interview with EK where she said (paraphrase) that it will be so interesting to see the beginning of this, and another blip from Kirkman I think where he said that it will show a time when humans outnumbered walkers...so again that's another hint that it will show the start of the ZA. But Kirkman was also adamant that none of the characters we know would be on it. Of course, he lies a lot.

I was bummed about showing all newbies, because I thought it would be cool to see Dale and how he ended up with Andrea and Amy, and how everybody like Carol and Ed or Merle and Daryl started evacuating, but I guess you couldn't make a series out of that.

Here's my proposal:

Do you think it should be set in D,C., showing the government dealing with this?

Do you think it should be from the point of view of military, say a National Guard unit being sent to do the unthinkable, go into combat on US soil against corpses?

Do you think it should just be civilians, similar to our people but in a totally different locale, like Chicago ?

If the virus/infection is airborne or in the water supply which people who die fastest would be most interesting to see reanimate? Old people? Hospital patients? Or-just think of all the criminals shooting each other in urban areas-reanimated gangstas? :-)

I think they're risking over-exposing their brand here, personally.  At the same time I'm not averse to a different look at this universe featuring characters I'm more interested/invested in [hope springs eternal every time the show introduces someone new].  I'm not sure I could get into a prequel, for the simple reason that we know the ending already.  I've always wanted more answers out of this show, but I'm not sure that's how I wanted them.  I think it'd be kind of interesting to see how things are going in a completely different part of the country at the same time as these guys, though.  I've always been a little disappointed we haven't gotten to explore more of the post-apocalyptic landscape in this universe and have been stuck in rural Georgia most of the time [not really on my top ten list of exciting landscapes to explore.  Sorry.]

I agree. Wouldn't it be funny if the whole time they are suffering, it's been cleared up and under control in the rest of the country?  :-)

I've never seen people who can spend so much time moving around and end up 5 miles from where they were before; or spend the whole winter "going around in circles" and miss a big-ass prison that was just over the hill from the place they stopped after fleeing the farm. And the Greene family lived on that farm, according to Herschel, for 160 years...but from the time Rick said 'we need to find a place to hunker down'-- till the next spring, Herschel never mentioned the prison. The closest we've got to "rest of America" info was Dave-n-FatTony talking about Philly! Barely!

People have mentioned that no one asks about Eugene's classified cure; at least they could have asked about what they've seen on their travels!

..also I do want to know about the Morales family. AMC wouldn't have to necessarily spend too much money; crap, Into The Wild had a lot of filming done at Raleigh Studios/Georgia and that story took place in Alaska.

I for one hope they do stick to all original characters. I sometimes think part of what slows down the tv show is trying to introduce comic characters. It builds up an expectation that often cannot be met. I'd rather see new characters unhindered by those limitations. I disliked the introduction of Eugene/Rosita/Abraham because they tried so hard to make them look like the comic characters they looked too cartoonish to be taken seriously.

I just discovered that "Arrow On The Doorpost" was originally called Pale Horse and Darryl would see a headless body strapped on to a running horse (FABULOUS!) after Merle died, sort of like his spirit (the bible verses about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse has the last Horseman as 'comes a pale rider whose name is Death'.

Other goodies I didn't know, like a dinosaur runs in front of Lori's car before the crash (on the DVD) and Darryl smokes the same cigarettes as Cigarette Smoking Man on the X-Files, etc. to be found here:

http://www.uproxx.com/tv/2013/10/20-easter-eggs-obscure-pop-culture-references-fun-facts-walking-dead/2/

Maybe you've already seen these, but I didn't know all of them til today.

I would absolutely watch the companion show. I love the buildup, watching how each person reacts differently to the same situation. It would be really interesting to see something similar to the webisodes where they do backstories of noteable walkers. I would definitely watch it.

According to David Alpert, one of TWD's producers, they have more or less planned out the story into seasons 11 and 12. Crazy. The ratings are so high that I think they might be able to get there.

This show would have to become something totally different to survive that long. I love the walking dead but ten years of always being on the defensive against walkers and other humans would get old. Now if they started to get a handle on things found a real scientist, started some sound research on how to use the virus to their advantage and then inoculate against it then they would have something. Maybe they could buy the rights to ARK II, and steal that storyline.

Anybody else see Jeopardy tonight?

If not, the Final Jeopardy "answer" was:

"George Romero turned down an invitation to write a couple episodes of this series because he said it was just a 'soap opera'."

One of the contestants actually wrote "What is The Bachelor?"

BTW---Do you think Alex Trebek has seen the Final Dead Jeopardy thread lead-in?

Naw.

I wasn't sure where to put this but I see another poster above who mentions the marathon starting July 4, so I guess this thread is ok.

Quoted below taken from: http://screencrush.com/the-walking-dead-season-5-preview-marathon-july-2014/?trackback=fbshare

Experience has taught us that ‘The Walking Dead‘ season 5 will premiere its first official trailer during the Comic-Con 2014 panel this coming July, but you won’t need to wait that long (or even attend) for a first look at the new season. Find out when AMC will premiere a brand-new first look at ‘The Walking Dead’ season 5 with a new ‘Talking Dead‘ special to follow a series-long marathon!

As announced over at ‘Talking Dead’ host Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist, AMC will begin a “Dead, White, and Blue” marathon weekend on Friday, July 4, airing every episode from all four seasons beginning at 9:00 A.M. It all leads up to a brand-new ‘Talking Dead’ special on July 6 at 9:00 P.M., starring Hardwick, showrunner Scott Gimple and ‘Archer”s Aisha Tyler, and featuring a first look at the show’s hotly anticipated fifth season.

Additionally, July 8 will see AMC debuting the first of two ‘Walking Dead’ documentaries, featuring interviews with cast and crew and new behind-the-scenes footage. Here’s how the network describes the new specials:

Inside The Walking Dead – Tuesday, July 8 at 10:00pm ET/PT

This one-hour documentary will showcase how this remarkable series is made. The executive producers will discuss the process of mapping out the show and viewers will hear from all of the key production departments – from production design and special effects to costumes and makeup – about their role in crafting the world of The Walking Dead.

Inside The Walking Dead: Walker University –Tuesday, July 15 at 10:00pm ET/PT
AMC’s second doc will follow the journey from extra to walker. Viewers will learn that there is much more to becoming part of the living dead than just make-up, and will get an inside perspective on the choreography, acting and motivation behind each zombie, including a look at what takes place at The Walking Dead’s own Zombie School.

It's ridiculous how excited I get for The Walking Dead Marathons. I mean, I already own all the seasons. I just love this show that much.

There better be some good sneak peeks into season 5 in that July 6th special.  I'll never forget when they promised to show stuff from season 4 with Kevin Smith last summer (if I recall correctly) but we got basically nothing.

LOL! You and me both. I always promise just to watch a few scenes, but then I get all wrapped up in the show as if it is the first time that I am watching it.

Truthfully, I have no faith that we will get any good sneak peeks.

Does anyone play the Telltale game of The Walking Dead? I didn't see any thread for it (or at least i didn't find it).

I love that game. I didn't know if should I discuss it here or start a thread in the Game forum??

There's a thread here, which I just split out from a "comics and the game" thread so that people (like me) who want to talk about the game without comics spoilers can do that. :)

Two things here:

1st. The walking dead will never get an Emmy nomination for acting. Because most of the drama from this show comes from the characters being not very smart. Not one person in this group has a walkie talkie. You can find them everywhere. The whole second half of season four would have been unnecessary with walkie talkies distributed among the few with some in emergency go bags. Flare guns also or fireworks rockets.

2nd. The Walking Dead is going into syndication this October. That explains this fourth of July marathon. The last chance for AMC to grab those large ratings and ad revenue on reuns.

Chris Hardwicke is a great.  This show has some quirky fans.

I've watched past season panels too and when it comes to Norman Reedus, I love how thoughtfully and humorously he answers questions. But it's also hilarious how distracted he is by his own phone and is constantly taking photos and videos, posting, and fiddling around with it. Social media whore that man.

In "you had to see this coming" news...

I just got my print issue of next week's TV Guide (with Scott Bakula on the cover) and there's an article on a new show debuting on the SyFy Channel on Sept. 12 called Z Nation starring Harold Perrineau, Tom Everett Scott and DJ Qualls.  It's about - wait for it - human survivors of a zombie apocalypse.  It focuses on a group of heroes trying to transport the only known survivor of the plague from NY to the last known functioning viral lab in CA in order to create a vaccine.  However, the show's producer takes pains to point out that it's not The Walking Dead.

"We're determined to put the fun back in zombies," says executive producer Karl Schaefer. "The Walking Dead is a fantastic show, but it has a very narrow, straight-forward vision of what it means to have a zombie problem.  We take a much more M*A*S*H-like approach, using black humor as a great survival skill. Hey', if you're in the zombie apocalypse and can't see the humor, you might as well curl up and wait to die."

Other differences?  This show will show all kinds of zombies - fast zombies, slow zombies, underwater zombies, animal zombies, even baby zombies - and those zombies will evolve.  Also, while TWD "is all about hunkering down in isolation and avoiding 'walkers' at all costs, the Z Nation guerrillas actually seek them out."'

"Our mission is to move forward every week, going from one pocket of humanity to another," Schaefer says. "Our characters are like, 'Let's go catch us some zombie ass!' Trust me, if there's ever a real apocalypse, you'll wanna be with our guys."

Those sound like fighting words to me.  It also sounds like Schaefer really hasn't watched TWD or understood what TWD is all about.  Also, if you have an important mission to escort a possible cure safely to a lab, it doesn't seem too smart to seek out zombies.  BTW, you can see a trailer for Z Nation by searching YouTube.

Well, what do you think of the SyFy competition? (Nice baby, though),

http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/08/19/z-nation-trailer/

Oh, ugh. I'm biased, but that looks awful. That trailer gave me a completely different feel from TWD so I wouldn't even compare them other than, "zombies!"

I thought it looked good, but my standards are pretty low. I'm sure I should be embarrassed to say that, but it's the truth.

When I saw the name DJ Qualls, I thought :Is this supposed to be a comedy?

He is usually in comedies; but he has lymphoma and is very skinny so maybe they thought he would look hungry? and maybe he wants to branch out into drama?

If they're going across the country, I want to see how they explain where the gasoline is coming from.

I might watch James Franco and Seth Rogen take a road trip in a zombie apocalypse.

Eh, it's hard to say from that 30 second trailer. From the zombie baby, it almost seems like they are going for shock rather than substance. But I can't say for sure. I might watch the first episode and see where it takes me.

And I agree about the gas, kikismom. If this were right at the start of the ZA, it would be one thing. But the description says it takes place three years in.

I just saw a nerdist article about that show, and the lead-in was "from the creators of Sharknado..." I didn't realize. No wonder it was silly looking!

Sorry, I didn't realize the Z Nation news had already been reported and discussed in another thread...

As Morgan Jones said, " Don't be sorry! Never be sorry!" ( or something like that)

I only added the conversating on that topic because we have people finding us for the first time and I don't know if they do the old 15/15 rule from TWoP. This way we can put all the SyFy snark together.

I'm excited. Anything that prevents another night of nothing on TV except  Big Brother/The Bachelor clones is good news. Especially now that Breaking Bad and 24 are gone.

But it sounds like they aren't just sending out a quick remix; they talk like they realize it better not disgrace the brand or people will be done with them.

It won't be my people...but at one time Herschel wasn't one of "my people", and now I keep wishing he was back. (And they may also become my people if the original show keeps killing off the Wilson/Rooker actors and hiring the Serrato/McDermitts.)

ZOMG, the Z Nation closed captions said "baby gurgling growlishly"! And it's a boy, so nothing like The Walking Dead's Li'l Asskicker (Judith) at all. And Murphy, the guy they have to transport (from NYC to California—not Georgia to DC), is the cure, so he's nothing like Eugene.

There was a commercial for the Oct. 7 premiere of a "SyFy docuseries," Town of the Living Dead. It's apparently an unscripted comedy about making an indie zombie movie in Jasper, Alabama: http://television.cosmicbooknews.com/content/syfy-town-living-dead-trailer

So yeah, zombie is the new black.
