They do have chemistry, don't they?

I feel a little sorry for the show, debuting the same night as the reboot of Roseanne.

I guess Splitting Up Together airing at 9:30 after Roseanne actually helped: all of ABC's numbers shot straight up, helping this series premiere a lot. 7.2 million viewers and 2.2 in the demo.

I will be watching the premiere in a little bit, since I couldn't tune in live last night.

Jenna Fisher's zipper broke just moments before she went out on Kimmel last night. So she did the interview in a towel and jeans. If you watched her instastory, she clearly had a shirt that went with the jeans, so it could possibly be a publicity stunt (that is working) to promote this show. But it's also possible she got her shirt wet or for some reason she couldn't wear it on the show.

I have to say this is a bit of a shock, but Fox is bringing Last Man Standing back after being gone for a year. So, what do I know. Then again, sounds like with The Middle gone and Modern Family ending next year. They want to give the show a second year since the ratings evened out.

I think it is getting a lot of good will from Jenna Fisher but I don't see this one lasting.

I bet the show will be at least somewhat retooled for season 2.

I agree. They really have to decide if they are going to continue with "Splitting UP" then it's time that one of them moves out of the house or they actually deal with the kids going between two houses and Martin buying a clue of how to do things. Hell, show how divorcing is effecting his job and pay. Other wise it's: "We are under water with our house, but my soon to be ex-husband makes good money and I work too. Yet, we can't tell you what that is."

I dunno.  RULES OF ENGAGEMENT lasted way longer than makes sense by any calculation. Oliver Hudson must have pictures or documents or something.

I know that Ellen DeGeneres is one of the Executive Producers of this show.  In my neck of the woods, The Ellen DeGeneres Show runs on our local ABC affiliate.  Is Ellen's show on ABC affiliates across the country?  If that is indeed the case, I'd think good will toward Ellen would buy the show a second season regardless of its initial performance after only eight episodes.

Back on a network note. Yes, it is interesting that they decided to keep the show around, but with The Middle over next week and Modern Family ending next season and with American Idol and Roseanne being the only big hits for them (Both Revivals). Alex Inc being a bomb and Fox resurrecting Last Man Standing. I see why they kept the show another season, but as people are already saying, especially critics. They better figure out what the show needs to be now, because I doubt it is going to be called: "Trying to get Back together." and last a full season for 2018-2019.

I bet they stick to the original premise, what it claims it is now... "a couple whose marriage is reinvigorated by getting a divorce".  So it will continue to do the 'will they or won't they' thing, and/or the 'on again/off again' thing.

I'm not prude at all but I think I would have a problem reuniting with a spouse who was having sex with other people in our house and yard, on a break or not.  I assume the show will make that part of their new appeal for each other... "A hot, young person wants my spouse.  Maybe I do, too."  Ick.

Maybe Wes and Lisa will ride off into the sunset together.

I think this show would have started out on a more sustainable course if the "2nd residence" wasn't their garage (or pool house, or whatever that space is supposed to be).  It would have been better if the quirky couple that they are both friends with lived next door and they had the apartment over the garage that Lena and Martin moved in and out from.  They just need a little more distance to move forward.

I totally agree! A million times over.  I can't fathom how RoE got past the pilot.  This theory is the only one that makes sense of all of this.

I also agree with black mail. Seriously, RoE was so bad, I think I lost brain cells.

Rules of Engagement was shockingly horrible. A few years back, I was a member of a survey site and they sometimes had entertainment surveys - where you watched two shows and rated them. Without fail, one of them would *always* be an episode of Rules of Engagement, it was horrible.

Hence, why the Blackmail rule seems to imply. Because it was like they wanted to hammer of: "We still care about the show, since we spent so much money on it. Please give us one more episode or revival." Seriously, some shows just need to die or never get past the pilot. I know a pilot on CBS 2 years ago with Charlie McDemont from The Middle was being constantly shopped to get aired when CBS said that the show was absolutely horrible. The creators were still trying to get a network to go since they found out The Middle was ending. Everyone looked at them and went: "Give it up already!" RoE is that example and I feel that is happening here with Splitting Up. If it wasn't for The Middle ending and Fox reviving other dead shows in the fall. I think this show wouldn't be getting a second season. Since they are changing the direction of it so much in the last few episodes. I say pictures too.

I don't think it's outlandish that this is getting a second season.  I've made it through six episodes, which is about six more than I made through Brooklyn Nine Nine, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, AP Bio, LA to Vegas, Fresh Off The Boat, Alex Inc. and a ton of other sitcoms.  A lot of this one is really offputting but not enough for me to stop watching yet, apparently.

So, I watched the first three episodes in hopes it would eventually get better but it never did. Jenna Fischer is a mediocre actress and this show just displays it perfectly, she was alright in The Office but in that she wasn't the main character so there was that.

The comedy in this 'family' series is pretty bland, forgettable and forced. I only ever laughed a few times thanks to Bobby Lee's character or else I'd have never.

I thought this would be the new The Middle replacement.. nope.

Watch through the 5th episode. It has a *huge* tonal shift in episode 5.

Okay, I'll put myself through that just to give it one last shot. I want to like this show but it's been pretty hard so far.

I know what you mean, it was like all of a sudden the writers were: "You know what, this can't work as as how, let's just throw it all up outside the original premise and make it work. It is better, but even with a renewal for next year I still see it as: "We had nothing else to put on next year and Alex Inc was a total bomb, and I think they have pictures on us executives."

So I watched till the most recent episode and would say the show went from mediocre to average, it's gotten just a little bit better than before. Lisa Apple's character was kind of a breath of fresh air than just seeing the standard cast as always.

Those fake glasses makes her look really cute and adorable.

I'll have to see if this is on Demand. I think the last episode I watched was Street Meat and I just couldn't get over the fact that a mother was screwing some random guy in a car parked right in front of her house. I mean, I know people have way different standards than me but I'd like to think that no matter how long I'd gone without sex I would still be mature enough to wait until I was behind closed doors and not parked in front of my house where all my neighbors and kids could catch me. Call me a prude.

I like both Fisher and Hudson so I wanted to like the show but I just couldn't be on her side after that regardless of how shitty a husband Oliver's character supposedly was.

Yeah, it just gets worst from there. Wait until you find out what happens in the season finale. You will flip.

With the loss of "Roseanne" (and to a lesser extent, "The Middle"), I suspect that ABC Tuesday will crash and burn next fall.

They really don't have a lot of strong shows and many weren't doing the best to begin with. At least with Wednesdays, they have strong anchor shows and even with Modern Family apparently ending next year. They have other shows to test out to see if they are going to work. I will say that with Fox bringing Last Man Standing back, they should have tried to do a computation with Tuesday nights, instead of recreating Friday nights and Fox has their Tuesday  nights pretty fine in their ratings time.

‘A Million Little Things’, ‘The Rookie’, ‘The Kids Are Alright’ & ‘Splitting Up Together’ Get Orders For 3 More Scripts From ABC

Quote

ABC has ordered three additional scripts for new fall series A Million Little Things, The Rookie and The Kids Are Alright and sophomore comedy Splitting Up Together. Broadcast networks opt for script orders to some series with 13-episode orders that they are considering for back episodic orders to keep their writers rooms going while they make the final decision whether to pick up more episodes.

Well, ratings dropped to 0.7 last night. And ABC doesn't own it.

So yeah, this show is in trouble.

Also add in the fact people are seeing it and going: "You are now doing everything so the concept of the show remains." people are going to check out. I also notice they are booking the actors on more talk shows like Cobert and Kimble. That shows desperation, same with Jena and Oliver showing up on Pyramid this summer.

I bailed on this show last year, so I don't know what's been going on in S2.  I was curious as to what effect the Roseanne debacle would have on ratings, and it looks pretty bad.

It's funny, I was only really watching SUT for Jenna Fischer. Over the summer I started following her on Instagram, and she posts IG videos almost every day. So now I get my Jenna fix without having to watch her terrible show.  Win win.

You do have to wonder if ABC really wants to keep trying to make the show work or they are giving everyone a chance to wrap it up by the end of the seasons. Ratings are down, but they have nothing to show in it's place unless the Sue (The Middle) Spin-off proves a hit in the spring.
