Box office experts thought Universal was predicting too high of a drop on Sunday and that turned out to be the case. It also has a record for the biggest worldwide OW ever, besting the Deathly Hallows Part 2. How high can JW go? The summer weekdays will give it a huge boost. I work at a movie theater, and on Sunday it was still pretty crowded, moreso than a usual Sunday. I'm not surprised there wasn't as big as a drop-off as there usually is for Sundays. Link to comment

It really shows that the overall weak box office last year was down to the level of interest the general public had in 2014's slate. There was just one 2014 movie get to $350 million, barely, and it made most of its money earlier this year (American Sniper). This year there are already three, plus the latest Star Wars and the last Hunger Games movie are good bets to join the list. The actual numbers give Jurassic World the highest second weekend ever, with $106,588,440. It's made $402.8M in ten days. It's going to get much closer to Jurassic Park in admissions than anyone ever would have guessed this time two weeks ago. Link to comment

This will only hasten the system's inevitable collapse, since there is only so far you can reboot Spider-Man, exploit more and more obscure Marvel properties, and make sequels of sequels of sequels before you hit fatigue and diminishing returns. I also think the reaction to Tammy caught up with McCarthy and hurt her next big comedy, but Spy will restore some goodwill. Summer weekdays will help the quest for $100 million, though Ted 2 will take screens and offer competition. EoT? Edge of Tomorrow, last summer's sci-fi with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt? Trini June 26, 2015 Share June 26, 2015 (edited) To me, a really interesting contest is next week's premiere of Magic Mike XXL and Terminator: Genisys. On one hand, MM made less than the last Terminator film and its rated 'R', but the sequel seems poised to make more than the first by heavily marketing to its female target demo. Genisys is targeting males with action and Schwarzenegger, but Ahhnold and the Terminator brands aren't what they used to be. It also doesn't have any proven mega-moneymaking stars. Can they FINALLY let go of the franchise, or consider actually going back to the R-rated format that served the movies so well? That would allow them to have a truly fresh start. Any time I saw young Arnold in the trailers, it kind of slipped into uncanny valley because I knew that footage was decades old/CGI. Link to comment

Inside Out finished at #1 with the final numbers: $29.7M for IO and $29.2M for Jurassic World. My Big Fat Greek Wedding lives another day! I wonder if some of the people at Pixar wanted the notoriety that record. The movie was a success regardless of what the weekend was. Link to comment

I wonder if some of the people at Pixar wanted the notoriety that record. The movie was a success regardless of what the weekend was. Probably not a success but maybe not an abject failure, either. It has a lower budget than Terminator: Salvation and if it makes more globally, they can always point to that as a positive, without dwelling on the fact that bringing back Arnold was supposed to draw in some of the audience who'd abandoned the franchise theatrically. The never #1 record tends to last longer but Pixar can still say all of their movies have gone #1 at the box office. I think the never #1 is such a memorable record because MBFGW was such an unlikely success story. Before that it looks to have been Dances With Wolves, whose reputation has fallen off since its glory days, but it was an acclaimed Best Picture winner at the time. 1 Link to comment

Dejana July 19, 2015 Author Share July 19, 2015 (edited) Most analysts were predicting at least $60 million but I'd say the number is more on the low end of expectations than outright disappointing. Here's the Disney spin: Executives at Disney, Marvel’s parent company, admitted that they would have liked a bigger number, but tried to accentuate the positive, noting that Ant-Man was, in their words, “an obscure character.” The film, which is noticeably lighter in tone, was intended to bring in younger audiences, Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis argued. “We were able to successfully launch a new character and to do so in a way that expands the audience of who is coming to see our movies,” he said. “In the long run, that’s of overwhelming value. I'm sure they would have loved another Guardians of the Galaxy-style breakout, but were probably realistic enough not to expect Ant-Man to do that well. ribboninthesky1 July 20, 2015 Share July 20, 2015 He does seem to be box-office poison nowadays, but I think the bigger issue is that Self/Less isn't the type of film that's popular right now. If it doesn't lure the kiddies or the family to the theater, not much luck. It may do better once it hits Netflix or Amazon. He may get his mojo back with Deadpool. Not sure what the projections were for Trainwreck, but it seems to have held its own. Link to comment

I not exactly an expert on box office numbers, but that's an impressive opening for an original comedy starring two very untested box-office draws, no? And the strong reviews and word of mouth should give it pretty good legs too. I have to admit, I was curious whether Amy Schumer's recent explosion would translate into box office dollars, or if she'd turn out to be another case of someone more "internet famous" than "really famous". But it looks like she just might be the real deal (I know Apatow's name being attached probably played a part too, but that hasn't been as big a boon in recent years as it was in the past).
