Although 50SoG it ended up very frontloaded, it only cost $40 million and has been even more successful overseas, so the studio can't be too displeased. The sequel would already have a firm start/release date if not for EL James thinking trying to commandeer the sequel. Disney overreached with those Cinderella estimates: its actual 3-day total came in at $67,877,361. Still quite strong considering the budget was $95M, nearly half of Maleficent's $180M cost. Of course, Fifty Shades has made more money than Kingsman, both domestically and overseas. If one looks just at the numbers for March, however, one may notice that Kingsman has done better than Fifty Shades domestically and overseas. Last Saturday, Fifty Shades made less than $250,000 domestically to Kingsman's nearly $1.4 million while Tuesday gave Fifty Shades $67,000 to Kingsman's $356,000. In other words, Kingsman did much better on Tuesday than Fifty Shades did on Saturday. And while both are losing in viewers, the number of people seeing Fifty Shades has been cut in half maybe two weeks in a row, while Kingsman is only starting to inch up to 40%, and even that could fall back down to a third or a quarter. Depending on how long each movie stays in theaters, there is an ever so slight chance that Kingsman could make up for the Valentines Day Weekend pummeling that Fifty Shades handed out. So...do you think that there is a chance? When is it decided that a movie will get pulled from cinemas? And who decides that? Fifty Shades has fallen from its domestic maximum of 3655 theaters to 554, while Kingsman's maximum of 3282 has fallen to 1785. For most new releases, theaters are contractually obligated to keep it for two weekends, though if it's a flop, they tend to limit the showtimes of the second weekend (in the third, they get dropped like hot potatoes--the list of All-Time Theater Drops is a who's who of box office bombs). There are cases where a theater has to keep a movie longer than two weeks, like with IMAX engagements, and in the past, Star Wars prequels have had the clout to demand theaters keep them four weeks. After that, it's basically up to the theaters to decide if they are making enough money from a movie to hold on to it, or if they will fare better by taking on newer releases. Box office results are listed in terms of nationwide totals and averages, but there can be a lot of variances in different parts of the country or even neighborhoods in the same metropolitan area. Plus, there are still the smaller movie theaters out there, the ones that just have two, four, six screens. They can have a higher turnover than larger theaters, which are still included in a movie's theater count, even when a movie might be on one screen out of 24, with one showtime at 10:30 AM. Domestically, the difference between FSoG and Kingsman is $35 million and Kingsman's run is winding down (albeit at a much slower pace) and there's a new flashy action blockbuster in Furious 7 as competition. I think the fortunes might be reversed for the sequels to Fifty Shades and Kingsman, with the latter having much more potential to expand its appeal with another installment. It can be a mix of factors. Say a theater only has four screens total, maybe they decide to drop an older action movie to make room for a brand-new one, and the other movies they keep will have a different sort of appeal, like an animated movie, a comedy, a YA film, if it's in the theater's interest to appeal to the broadest audience possible. Usually, it doesn't come to theaters only being able to show one movie at a time, though in the summer there's often a glut of blockbuster action movies, one week after the other. Comedies can get a bit more breathing room and hang around in theaters a little longer, not having so much competition. Theater averages can be deceiving. Some movies are popular everywhere, but others might be playing well in one place and poorly in another. An animated movie might be number one in the country, but if there's a theater that's not in a prime spot for families, for example, then that theater might be quicker to drop the kids' movie and keep The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for another week, because that location has a dozen 55+ communities within a ten block radius. Or theater owners can track, for example, that they sell 100% more concessions with kids movies than Nicholas Sparks dramas, so even if they sell slightly fewer tickets, they make more money on food sales, which don't have to be shared with studios/distributors. Specifically with Kingsman vs. 50 Shades, they both remained over 3000 theaters for the first three weeks. As for Spongebob, it dropped pretty dramatically when Home was released, but it was already fading, since most theatrical runs these days (outside of phenomenons and end-of-year awards bait) are pretty short. Spongebob might squeeze out another million or two once it goes to the discount/second-run theaters, but it will top out where it is now, in the $160 million range. In many Asian and Latin American markets the movie is being shown in 3D, and international box office (especially China) continues to grow each year. Still, Furious Seven's international performance is pretty astounding. It's making Marvel, Harry Potter sort of money overseas now. The US dollar is very strong against many foreign currencies now, so if anything, the international box office should be weaker or relatively flat (even with the same attendance, a weaker exchange rate would lower the overseas grosses). Athena April 14, 2015 Share April 14, 2015 I'll preface and say I've only seen the first two FF movies, but I've been following the franchise for awhile. I noticed early on that they took the marketing of it the movies internationally more seriously before other action franchises. Transformers tried to tap into the Chinese market recently, but this franchise has been much more global for longer. The cast, for a Hollywood ensemble movie, is diverse. They even made a movie set in Japan. If you look at the franchise's total box office, they have been increasing with almost every movie. The movies have a global appeal because of its focus on cars which is more accessible than say magic, dystopia, sci-fi, or superheroes. These are the kind of movies that even people who don't watch a lot of action movies go to see. I think Universal have found a great formula with this series. 2 Link to comment
galax-arena April 18, 2015 Share April 18, 2015 Furious 7 just became the fast movie ever to reach $1b at the worldwide box office. The previous record was Avatar, Avengers, and Deathly Hallows 2 at 19 days; Furious 7 got there in 17. I'm interested in seeing if Avengers 2 can beat that record. But, nope, not so much. And cast minority women as female love interests and let the actresses do more than just be eye candy. Its estimates in 2012 were $7 million under the actual numbers; Disney/Marvel is probably hoping that people who chose Mayweather-Pacquiao over the movies last night will head back to theaters today, so they can find an extra $5-7 million to pad this weekend's numbers. methodwriter85 May 4, 2015 Share May 4, 2015 (edited) The Longest Ride hasn't been doing that badly either- at this point, it's pretty close to making back its production budget which isn't bad considering that it's Scott Eastwood's and Britt Robertson's first attempt at leading a wide release film and there wasn't much promotion. It's going to be a miracle if Insurgent closes at 135 million. At this point, I'm saying it's closing at 130 million and therefore twenty million below the first movie. The market research firm surveyed 641 respondents and discovered that 52% of those who didn’t see a movie this weekend said it was because of the fight. Of those who opted to see boxing over a movie, 24% reported there wasn’t enough time to see both the Mayweather and Pacquiao smackdown and watch the Avengers save the world. Fifteen percent said friends and family wanted to see the fight instead of the movie, while 13% said after shelling out $100 for the boxing match there wasn’t enough money left over to buy tickets to “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” People who saw the fight, but not a movie, overlapped with the main demographic groups that took in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” — they were 62% male, and 64% between the ages of 13-29. Opening weekend audiences for the film were 59% male, 22% between the ages of 17-25 and 27% between 26 and 34 years old. Ticket sales for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” dropped sharply on Saturday night, particularly during hours when people across the country were gathering to watch boxing. Forty five percent of those polled said they didn’t plan on seeing a movie last weekend and the fight never factored into that decision. Among people who saw the fight but skipped “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” 50% were white, 20% were black and 25% were Hispanic. I would say wait until you can rent it or it will be on TV. It's kind of a nice rainy-day movie because the costumes are beautiful and the supporting cast are all solid, but Blake Lively is far from a good actress. As clichéd as all Nicholas Sparks films are, I actually enjoyed the Longest Ride a bit more, as the young cast members (Eastwood, Robertson, Huston and Chaplin) were all very charismatic. Also, I just realized that 3/4 of them are from serious Hollywood royalty. Link to comment

Box Office Mojo has been in a slow decline for years, really. If the IMDb wanted to shutter if or completely fold it into their site (there was a scare not that long ago), they easily could, but it doesn't seem run like a site that's a top priority anymore. Unless there's some massive change in ownership, its fate seems to be death by benign neglect. Pitch Perfect 2 made more in its opening weekend than the original Pitch Perfect did in its lifetime in theaters ($65 million). Other sequels that have managed that leap are Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Tron Legacy (the latter having nearly 30 years between installments for the inflation boost). frenchtoast June 9, 2015 Share June 9, 2015 The box office numbers for United Passion was reported in Slate. Mostly because it did so badly. I love this: Just to break down the numbers a bit more because they’re funny: The film pulled in $319 on Friday and $288 on Saturday. That’s a 10-percent box office decline on Saturday. Word of mouth was obviously not kind to United Passions. Link to comment
