Vinyl in the Media

Interviews, articles, reviews, etc.

I'm glad that Scorcese was involved with this from the beginning, even if only to ensure the accuracy of the sets, wardrobe, etc. It drives me crazy to watch shows set in a specific year and then see clothing or other details that are from a year that hasn't happened yet.

I sincerely hope this blows up in their faces.  The first episode was horrible and hardly anyone watched it, the second was worse. I read another board composed almost entirely of music fans who lived in this era and with a couple of outliers the thread there is basically 15 pages of people screaming about how inauthentic and useless the whole thing is, and linking to scathing reviews from around the Web.  HBO has said in the past they don't care as much about viewership as they do about critical acclaim, and while maybe mainstream critics, like HBO, will be blinded enough by the starpower and "talent" level to try to come up with something nice to say, I know for me if I bother to watch any more it will be on an "Under the Dome" level - just to see how long they can swirl around the drain.  Maybe a horse can get killed or something to let them off the hook.

Scott Z. Burns is apparently replacing Winter. The only imdb credit I've seen on his list is The Bourne Ultimatum (he wrote the screenplay.) I hope he can salvage something watchable out of the mess he's being handed.

Winter, and Scorsese for that matter, keep recycling the same motiths for each project.  I am encouraged by this fresh start.

No surprise, Vinyl just got voted one of the most disappointing new shows of the season.  It seems like HBO is regretting its hasty decision to renew it so quickly after airing the pilot.

It has not brought in ratings, critical acclaim, or water cooler buzz.

As much thought went into that soundtrack as did the show unfortunately.

I like Sturgill Simpson but kinda loathe the whole opening and theme song.

With the production overhaul, I am optimistic that season 2 will be an improvement.

Really, where is this board?

Well, I certainly hope the new producer(s) turn this around, because in general, I like the topic.  I just don't like how its been executed.  As I read on one board, if you add up all the time that we were shown Ritchie snorting coke or being drunk, it was approximately 60 minutes, or an entire episode's worth.  That's a waste of time.  Focus on the music!

Yikes, that's pretty embarrassing, considering all the hype and pedigree.  For Terrence Winter and Scorsese, It's basically become what John from Cincinnati was for David Milch.  And this is the second time recently HBO renewed and then changed their mind on a show (The Brink).  I wonder what is going on over there?  Is it budget reasons or are they getting early looks at scripts and stories, and not liking the direction of it?  It's just kind of weird.

Don't forget that show where all those horses died during production.

HBO hasn't been able to buy a hit for awhile now.

Ah, yes.  Luck.  Almost forgot about that one.

I guess HBO really is hoping Westworld gives them a boost.  If not, it maybe be reduced to just airing reruns of Game of Thrones and their comedy block soon.  Hell, maybe they'll just reair their past shows.  Or finally get around to a Deadwood movie...

Vinyl failed on so many levels, which is shocking considering the talent behind it.  However, if you want to spend watching a coke head hang out with Ernst the friendly ghost, this was the show for you.

I was hoping they'd come back in the second season regrouped and much, much better.  But this summer I read the book The Sun, The Moon and The Rolling Stones, written by Rich Cohen, who created the show with Scorsese and Mick and I knew anything that guy wrote was going to be all cliches and rehashes.  So, bye, bye Vinyl.

I still love you, though, Mick.
