Say Yes To The Dress - General Discussion

Recommended Posts

The Irish bride trying on traditional Indian dresses, yeah I'm not wearing anything that shows my midriff. And I didn't like the 2 different greens on what she chose. I thought they clashed.

So sad that the lesbian bride never felt pretty. She had cheekbones to die for and looked fabulous in everything. Couldn't believe her mother was unmoved by the first dress.

It was giving Christmas.  It was especially disappointing because the previous brides looking for Indian wedding garments ended up with much more interesting outfits.  She seemed sweet, though.  And I did like the green of her top.

Anyone else completely turned off when a client or salesperson on the show refers to a wedding dress as 'she'.  They're inanimate objects, people.

New age crystal, sage, "I'm marrying myself" bride was more tolerable than I thought she'd be although her appearance was obviously just for attention.  Does she have a business as a New Age lifestyle guru to promote?

The traditional Asian Indian wedding dress, or lehenga, is red just as the traditional western wedding dress is white.  Wearing a sari in color(s) other than red disqualifies it as a lehenga.  If an Indian bride came to Kleinfeld's demanding a wedding dress be dyed sapphire blue, would most of us still call it a wedding dress?  Since they're getting married in India, it's nice she chose traditional Indian dress, but what she chose was not a wedding outfit in that culture.

I don't know about most but I would.  Kleinfeld's actually has a section on its website for non-white dresses.

I never got married but if I did, I would have likely done something with floral appilques.

Nicoletta was wearing a completely different dress at her ceremony, wasn't she? I even ran the recording back to check.

Tan had a bride in a wheelchair a couple of weeks ago and there were no bunching problems with the dresses he chose. I think the problem was the consultants at Kleinfeld's kept giving her gowns that were too fitted instead of something more A-line.

A retrospective thingy seems to be a way to send the show off. Certainly seems like they're done with it. They don't have to officially cancel it if they just never start production again.

I think at least part of the problem getting the proper fit on this week’s wheelchair bride was that it seems like she is unable to sit completely upright and the chair has to be reclined a bit.  I’m sure there was a medical reason, but I think that was a limitation when it came to getting a gown to lie properly.  An A-line dress with a more defined waist might’ve worked better; but the bride herself rejected the idea of a gown that might cover part of the chair.

And, yes, it seemed obvious to me that Nicolette was wearing an entirely different dress at the ceremony. Equally tacky, but different.  That’s not the first time we’ve seen the show try to pass off a different dress as the one the bride chose on the show.  As I recall, on one of the retrospectives, a sales rep indicated that a substantial number of brides change their mind and re-select after choosing a dress at their appointment.

It irks me as well. However, there's precedent as ships have traditionally been referred to as "she."

I did a bit of research to find out why, and found this (boldface mine):

"Another tradition is to consider ships as female, referring to them as ‘she’. Although it may sound strange referring to an inanimate object as ‘she’, this tradition relates to the idea of a female figure such as a mother or goddess guiding and protecting a ship and crew. Another idea is that in many languages, objects are referred to using feminine or masculine nouns. This is less common in English which tends to use gender-neutral nouns, however referring to ships as ‘she’ may refer to far more ancient traditions."

https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/why-do-ships-have-a-gender

Because wedding gowns have historically been worn only by women, and despite nouns in the English language not being gendered, we think of wedding dresses as being female (if having to choose between male or female).

That's all I've got  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (😉)

When worlds collide

I am still working my way through the past seasons of the show which are streaming on MAX and reached Season 9 Episode 10 and who should be the bride but Ashley Darby who is on Real Housewives of Potomac.

This was when she was engaged to the gollum and even without knowing anything about the pair, it was obvious that she was a gold digger who had snared a rich unattractive wallet.

The show was starting to trend towards stunt casting and obvious reality show wannabes because Ashley was seeking a very specific dress which she had a picture of on her phone. The store didn't carry it and had almost no similar styles.

It is simply unbelievable that someone from outside New York City would go to Kleinfeld without seeking out the specific dress they wanted to try on in their area OR at the very least at a bridal shop in New York which carries it.

Well, I have finally done it-I have broken up with this show.  I just can't take the endless back stories that mean we only get two brides an episode.  I am fast-forwarding so much of the show now that it's not worth it to me anymore.  I will continue to watch reruns if I'm looking for something for background filler.  Even though I have never married, I always enjoyed seeing the dresses, and commenting on them with everyone here (especially during the Prina years...).  Now it seems like the producers think the only thing that will interest viewers are the back stories when most of us started watching this show for the dresses.

So, I cancelled the recording of the series...

Yeah, I'm going to do that too once next week airs. There is no there there anymore. It's a shell of its former self and even Randy feels like he doesn't want to be there. I doubt he even works there full time at this point. It all feels so fake and forced. And even though I loved Gok's UK show more than Tan's, Tan did grow on my a bit. What did not grow on me, however, was the one 'bride' per his episodes that was just a stunt. The drag queen, the lady who married herself, I mean, GMAFB. The show's concept was always solid, and let's be real here, brides and their mothers/entourages bring enough real drama that we don't need to manufacture drama to ramp it up. This is no longer the same show, and that sucks because I also loved seeing the gowns.

Randy hasn’t worked at Kleinfeld since 2013 as he is only there to shoot for the show.

The producers really did us a disservice with last night's "retrospective."  To highlight so many of those who appeared this season just brought home how uninteresting and ridiculous this season was to begin with.

I miss the early season, half-hour shows with two or three brides or two brides and alterations and consultants like Sarah, Keisha, Audrey, even the over-made-up Camille, to say nothing of Debbie, Christianne (I'm sure I spelled her name wrong), Antonella, and the pushy Diane.  The families and brides seemed to be there more for the dresses and not their five-minutes of TV fame.

Going to an hour and only two brides ruined the show.

Honestly, I hope they don't film more episodes because this show has been run into the ground.

I was glad the retrospective threw in a few brides who weren't from this season. I hadn't seen the underwater or the purple haired rocker brides. How young Randy was in the silver dress episode. It must have brought back a lot of memories for him.

Tan's lesbian brides were delightful. And they did look beautiful in their chosen dresses. Needed that to make up for the Debbie downer entourage. Would not have guessed that those 3 women were sisters. Looked nothing alike. Couldn't decide if Betty was pregnant or fat. I didn't care for any of those picks, they didn't flatter the bride. For the vintage bride, I'm not sure what the difference was from the first dress that she wouldn't even come out in and the one she chose. The great aunt's veil was gorgeous and I thought the tiara would have gone with it.

Hey TLC- it's not a retrospective if 3/4 of the brides were from this (short season).

I ff'ed till Tan. Agree with @woofy, miss the brides trying on several dresses by multiple designers. Don't need family drama or backstories or influencers or other TLC "talent". Maybe they can reboot in a few years like Stacey and Clinton are about to.

If you go to Natalie's Facebook page (married name Castrogiovanni) you'll see the dress she ultimately wore.  It's stunning.  And her groom is a cutey.

And Marry Myself Bride's "perfect Kleinfeld dress" was as fake as her "flying over Manhattan".   Private helicopters aren't allowed to fly over Manhattan, just the rivers surrounding it, and they have to depart from New Jersey.  The "wedding" outside the bathrooms in the heliport in New Jersey may have been a whole new level of tacky.

Thanks for the info!  That dress is gorgeous and fits her so well.  Is that the dress she tried on at Kleinfelds?  I can't remember what it looked like.

I just finished Season 10 in my blast through the past. It is astounding how few of these I remember although I know my DVR recorded every season.

I watched the episode where Amanda Namer had come in for another Pnina dress because she had decide the original dress wasn't good enough.

She was very typical NJ Shore - think Real Housewives of NJ type and her father was there with what I immediately though was his goombah as she wasn't introduced as mother, wife or step mother.

How he was affording this was already questionable -

Bride decided on a custom Pnina with more bling - Pnina half jokingly told him that he was going to have to rob a bank.

He said it's only money and you can always make more money which immediately made me realize he wasn't making his money legitimately because that is not something that most people with honest incomes generally say and he exuded an aura of illegitimate funds

My Spidey sense alerted, I googled and there it was - ephemistically makes money from the porn industry and googling further was arrested a few years after the show for dealing drugs from one of his adult boutiques - Jeffrey Namer and Amanda Namer was the bride and his daughter

OWNER OF CHAIN ADULT BOUTIQUES AND SMOKE SHOPS OWNER

There have been other trashy brides in which I question how they are affording their $10,000 but I think this is the first dress that was absolutely paid for with criminal activities 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

Continuing my walk through history I am now on Season 12. This is the season when they expanded the wedding video at the end of the show with that horrendous - You Came Down To Heaven song - playing through the montage which I can thankfully fast forward through after checking out how the dress looked when it was fitted and bride was wearing accessories.

The show to date seems to have been a feeder for reality D List celebrities as I have now spotted three with ties to Real Housewives - there could of course be others but these are the franchises I am familiar with

Kara Keough who is the daughter of one of the original Orange County housewives picking out a gown for her wedding in 2014. She is still married so seems to have avoided the curse

Ashley Darby who is on RH of Potomac and this was prior to her wedding to the troll from whom she is now divorced. She was cast several years after the wedding

Most recently (Season 12) Meghan King Edmonds who was on RH of Orange County. She was married to and now divorced from Jim Edmonds. According to her Wiki she was on a reality show prior to RH produced by Rachael Zoe and her sister was on Amazing Race so I guess it runs in the family.

No one in my family or circle of friends has ever even had a desire to be on a reality show. The closest I have come to "stardom" is getting a spot on Jeopardy decades ago.
