Came across these old articles from 2012-2013 and thought they were interesting behind-the-scenes looks at Arrow's music scoring...

http://collider.com/comic-con-character-of-music-nathan-johnson/

Quote

... Starting off with questions about how they got involved with their respective projects, Marc Guggenheim praised Neely because they no longer use temp music as a placeholder.  They can send him rough cuts and he will play with it, right there, and compose on the fly.  Even if it ends up being a placeholder in the end, they don’t outsource the music.  Neely also told a story about how he knew Arrow was a CW show, and there was a four-minute training sequence in an episode.  He kept skipping over it because he figured they would just simply insert in a popular song of some sort, typical of the CW.  After a few days, though, they called and asked him where the music was.  Guggenheim added that they are really going for a cinematic feel for the show and getting away from some of the typical CW trappings.

http://deadline.com/2013/08/jeff-beal-blake-neely-house-of-cards-scoring-composers-emmys-565460/

Quote

Hitting the right notes on a TV pilot can often require composers to pay for their perfectionist ways. After landing the scoring gig for the CW’s DC Comics pilot Arrow, Blake Neely was faced with the daunting task of following in the footsteps of other big-screen superhero themes. However, at the time, The CW was unsure if Arrow was a go on the fall 2012 schedule. And Neely’s using an orchestral score wasn’t even a possibility.

“The best way to prove to them that they needed (an orchestral score) for the series was for them to hear it,” says Neely. So he hired a 30-piece orchestra comprising strings and brass to create a suspenseful, dark-toned sound, recorded in his Sherman Oaks studio. CW suits were wowed, and Neely’s score lived – but only for the first episode. The bulk of the music budget for Arrow was sacrificed for other production elements, which is typical considering most shows get by with synthesizers.
*  *  *
In scrambling for projects, the number of which have increased thanks to ABC’s embrace of Revenge, Neely says that many composers will hire their own orchestra to record demos just to land the job. But it’s not something he hopes anyone expects during the process.

“A costume designer doesn’t pay for the material, and the cinematographer isn’t forced to pay for their film,” Neely says. “It’s a bit of a double-edged sword that we don’t want the industry to get comfortable with.”

And then the bulk of Arrow's budget was sacrificed for the CGI on the other 3 show.  #bitter

I'm impressed by Neely and how he writes individual themes for so many characters on so many shows.

They must have changed their minds about the budget for music because after season 2, Arrow went with Neely's compositions and dropped the pop songs completely.

I'm not so sure Arrow's budget got cut because of the other shows. I think it has always been expected to do as much as it could with not a lot of money. I remember how Arrow had to incorporate advertising into the show in seasons 1 and 2, to the point where sometimes it felt like they were being sponsored by Microsoft (the lingering shots of Felicity's Surface tablet and Dig using Bing to search for HIVE). It wasn't Subway sandwiches on "Chuck" level bad, but it was close.

No offense to Stephen Amell but there's any bare bum shots i' d vastly prefer Emily/Felicitys bare bum

I'm trying to recall any network shows that have been allowed to show female bums, more than just the verrrry low back shots.  I can't recall any off hand.  But they've been flashing men's butts since the 90's, still not a lot, but it's been known to happen.  Of course, I don't actually watch shows like Scandal or the Shondaland stuff so maybe there's been changes I'm not aware of?

We shall hope in vain to see Felicity's bum together!

Or I'd settle for a shot of Felicity in undies! Gawd I'm such a perve. I do like to swoon at a good looking woman though!

I'd take Felicity in bra and panties! I guess I'm a prev right there with ya. Good looking women are always good to swoon over and she's a total babe in more than one way

I think NYPD Blue showed a bare female bum before in fact I believe Charlotte Ross our very own Mama Smoak was the one!

See, if they actually made William into a real character instead of a plot device and he wasn't a key part in breaking up my ship in a stupid, stupid way, I might, just might be able to look at that photo above and imagine Felicity, William & Oliver as a family (on the days Oliver has him or if Samantha croaks on the island).

Also, the Sidekick kid (or his handlers or parents) have good social media game. Arrow stars should take note.

Plus I only heard good things about the kid's acting on Prison Break.  I remain envious.

Oh, is he Michael and Sara's kid? I still have to check out Prison Break.

It's funny to me how much BTS stuff I'm seeing from a short film, LOL! This is the kind of content I'd love to see from Arrow folks (specifically Stephen, David, Emily, Willa and Paul; don't much care about the rest).

He was okay, not spectacular. He didn't really have much to do, but he was relaxed and natural on camera.

Is that leather on EBR? Not a comfortable travelling choice.

I never got the impression it was a publicity stunt, more of a rebound fling with a friend.  But it did make me look at PB in a different way.  And then I'd hear him talk in his real accent and nod my head, remembering why it all made sense.  ;)

Interesting review of HVFF-London (May 27-28)...

Quote

Another issue was that HVFF took place on the same weekend as MCM London, Europe’s largest comic con, which was known several months beforehand. Some people decided to split their time between the two cons, which made for a quite relaxed HVFF with ample room to move around.
*  *  *
HVFF had an impressive guest line-up for their first time in London which included the following: Stephen Amell (Arrow), Emily Brett Rickards (Arrow), John Barrowman (Arrow, Torchwood, Legends of Tomorrow), Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter), Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games, Captain America), Brandon Routh (Legends of Tomorrow), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), Robbie Amell (The Flash), Shantel VanSanten (The Flash, One Tree Hill), Katie Cassidy (Arrow), Josh Segerra (Arrow), Matt Ryan (Constantine), Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), Italia Ricci (Supergirl), Milo Ventimiglia (Gotham, This is Us), Robin Lord Taylor (Gotham), etc. All the guests seemed very happy to be there (minus one guest that shall remain nameless because they always seem to be quite a disappointment for the attendees over here in the UK). When they were not in a panel or at a photoshoot session, the guests were at their table to meet the fans. For most of them, people could buy an autograph, a selfie, or a combo of both. I found the lines very manageable but I had a VIP badge courtesy of HVFF, so I never waited very long. If a VIP ticket is not in your budget, do not worry, I have met many General Admission attendees who managed to meet everyone on their list with a little planning. It also depends on the guests. The John Barrowman line stayed long all weekend, and people had to wait several hours to meet him. The Barrowman experience is worth it, though. For the biggest guests like Stephen Amell & Emily Bett Rickards, HVFF held an autograph pre-sale a few weeks before the event to regulate the crowd. In the end, both guests were able to interact with all the pre-sale ticket holders and many in the general audience as their lines were open to all in the afternoon, which I thought was great.
*  *  *
My favorite part was the panels. They were very well organized with respect to lines and badge priority. They had a sign language interpreter on stage and the panels were visible on two big screens with live captioning. Because the con was in one big room, people who did not manage to get a seat could still watch the panels from the sides. The panel I was most looking forward was John Barrowman and boy he did not disappoint. His entrance in a Tardis dress set the tone and I was in stiches for the next 45 minutes. This man is hilarious. All the panels were great. The audience came up with good questions and it was clear the guests were happy to be on stage and share a moment with the fans.

*  *  *
All in all, HVFF ran very smoothly. It is obvious that it is not their first time. To be honest, my main complaint about HVFF is the prices. A few of the guests were ridiculously overpriced. It might work well in the US but the UK/Europe con circuit has always been known for its reasonable prices and HVFF kind of sticks out in that respect. That being said, I am a regular con goer and therefore have to save money for many cons a year, whereas most of the HVFF audience only attend one con a year which makes their budgeting a bit easier.

You know which scene I'd love to see the script of? This one in 213. I mean, I can guess but I'd love to see the script direction and see if it matches with my take (Felicity pokes out of the box Oliver had put her in by putting on workout gear and he's alarmed and maybe also hot and bothered)

Know anyone in Los Angeles?  From what i can tell the Writers Guild Foundation has the first three seasons of Arrow's scripts archived in it's library but even the digital copies appear to have to be read on site.

I don't know what the script says, but I've always been in the group thinking that SA played it as Oliver definitely being hot and bothered.

This is cute.

I do, unfortunately I very much doubt I can send my friend to the WGF library. Not very ... indulgent when it comes to things like this. I wonder if WGF has an NY headquarters. Off to check.

Olicity are getting a park bench! That is the most adorable idea and I can't wait to see all the pictures of the Olicity dolls that people are going to pose on that bench!

On the other hand the nutters are out in force raging about the bench! Sheesh who cares what people spend their own money on as long as it's not hurting anyone! Do people not question their own crazy when they rage at others over stuff like this that's none of their business!

What?  Where is this?

It's more than a park bench, really. The money raised (minimum $4,000 Canadian) would go toward preservation efforts at the Vancouver park where Arrow usually films. If you raise enough money, the park dedicates one of the many benches to you with a small plaque. Members of the fandom thought it would be a good idea and began a GoFundMe page. The goal was reached in 2 days (mostly I suspect because word spread fast about the project once the haters started targeting it). So far $5,160 has been raised. (Gotta love this fandom!)
