Sweet Fellowship: Duggars and Friends (aka the Bates Family and Other Featured Families Thread)

Message added by Scarlett45

If a person/family was never featured on any of the Duggar shows, and is not related to the Duggar family by blood or marriage, they do not need to be discussed here..

We may all agree that David Rodriques is quite unfortunate looking, but let's refrain from comparing human beings to apes, its got way too much of a loaded history- please review the new Inclusion Policy updated May 1, 2022 , which details guidelines around discussing body type, capabilities, physical appearance etc. Additionally, using body size as an insult is not allowed.

One of my sisters never wanted or had children. My oldest sister and I did. We broke the cycle big time. Neither of us drank when the kids were little, and I was always very careful about quiet bedtime, and quiet nights - and an overall peaceful life. Today my kids really are some of my best friends. And not like Jill and Nurie and whatever weird bonding situation they have. All I see is Nurie doing a weird squeal “Yas” to anything mama say or does. Nurie will definitely go for a record number of children. And she’s already doing the weird short hair and hairspray thing on her tiny boys. I guess next will be starving and swimming in ditches - fully clothed.

You broke the cycle, @EmeraldGirlbut Nurie can't or won't. But I am hopeful that a couple of Rods will opt for fewer children and maybe even school for their kids. 🤞

Hopefully Jill will tire out eventually and let up on some of them. Michelle and Jim Bob seem to have, but Jill is a different animal. I could see her not speaking to girls who wore pants, or opted for any other kind of lifestyle. Jana’s wedding dress alone would’ve blown her head off.

So did the Maxwells. They let Sarah move out and marry, and set their two other daughters to college. Christian college but still. I think one of them got married too.

True, but Sarah didn't move out until she was 39. The sisters who went to college were in their mid/late 20s.

I doubt Jill would let her girls move out unless they were getting married. They're in no way prepared for even bible college. Sarah worked for one of her brothers to support herself. No Rod boy is self supporting with employees, and no daughter is equipped to work in the real world.

Are Nurie and Nathan dressed up, or are they in some kind of costume? She's wearing gloves and sneakers. I ask this seriously since the Rod women's clothes never make sense, and the men's clothes rarely do.

it was a themed v day banquet. sailor I think? they are dressed up.

Below Deck: Nurthan on the Ocean. Captain Nathan, chief stew Nurie, and two deck hands host a welcome dinner for the new charter guests.

Jill asked for people to bring food... I wonder who donated food because it sure wasn't Jill/David.

The Maxwells are also miles ahead of the Rods both educationally and economically.  The kids grew up in a large, very nice home with enough room for everyone and regular, healthy meals.  They travelled in a bus which Steve, the father, who is very mechanically inclined, fixed up for them and was quite nice. Steve and the boys also kept it in good repair rather than just hoping for donations like David.  Terri did their schooling, but her kids seem to understand the basics of grammar and punctuation.  Several of the boys started their own business providing IT support to other businesses and their families are also solidly middle class living in homes they own in nice neighborhoods.

The girls were trained to be housewives, but their blog is full of photos of them making delicious looking pastry and bread from scratch and appetizing, well balanced, meals.  They also made a lot of their own clothes which, while typical fundie wear, was well constructed and fit properly.  No kids in clothes or shoes that don't fit.

The Maxwell kids were far better prepared to break away than the Rod kids.

I think the couple in Hawaii look wonderful. I absolutely love that dress! And the beige suit looks nice too.

As for the other couple. Hmm. Her dress looks typical fundie, but it’s pretty. But Mr. Mullet/blue jeans isn’t doing anything for me. He couldn’t even put on the traditional hokey suspenders and bowtie? To each their own, but I would be cutting his hair in the middle of the night.

PS: Can someone point me to where I can find the Maxwells? I haven’t really even heard more than a few words about them but I would like to see what they’re all about.

The Maxwells used to have a blog, but that went by the wayside when Sarah moved out. Their biggest claim to fame is that they had 5 kids after a reversed vasectomy. And Terri, the mom, gave up Pepsi because she thought it was bad for her mental health.

They appeared on 19 Kids at Josiah's huge ass graduation, so they're fair game here. 👍

The old blog posts are archived on the site that the Maxwell parents use to sell their merchandise to other fundies.  They used to do quite a bit of speaking at homeschooling conferences and such.  Their schtick is that they're good old fashioned fundie parents full of wisdom to share.  If you recall the ancient 19 Kids episode where the Duggar kids each had Chore Packs; that's a Maxwell parenting product.

It doesn't appear that anyone has updated the site in more than a year, not even to post messages from Terri and Steve who used to each post monthly with advice for moms and dads.

On the right side of the page is a listing of the old posts by year. To get the best picture of what things were like before the kids grew up, go back 10 years or more.  There are a massive number of blog entries, especially in the early days. Sarah was quite diligent in updating it.

To get an idea of what a massive controlling jerk Steve (aka Stevehovah) was and probably still is, you need to go back into his personal messages for dads where he talks about how he ruled the roost.  Amongst other things, he proclaimed that playing was a waste of time even for kids and the Maxwell kids were made to do house work, read the Bible or otherwise occupy their time instead of being kids.  There's also a post where he rails against people asking kids for their opinion on anything.  It is up to the parents to make all decisions and tell the kids what to think.  This came after one of the girls was seeing an orthodontist for some problems with her braces (all the M kids had awful teeth but got braces).  They'd tried something but it hadn't worked and was painful for the kid who was around 10.  The orthodontist talked to Terri and the girl about what they could try next and had the audacity to ask the child if she understood and was ok with trying the new procedure.  Steve had a fit, the kid would do what her mother told her and her feelings were irrelevant.

Weren’t the Maxhells the ones who complained about the bathing suits their neighbors were wearing on their own property, in their private pool, in their fenced-in back yard?

Yup. Steve threw a hissy fit. Now his daughters wear pants (and I bet swimsuits).

Elijah might be the first fundie groom I have ever seen in a suit that didn't have 6" of extra fabric gathered around his ankles.😂

Steve was pretty horrible. They had three kids first because Terri seemed to have mental issues. Smart right? They grew up fairly normal going to school and playing sports until Steve decided it was wrong and pulled them out of everything and sheltered them he also decided God wanted them to have more kids and reversed his vasectomy and had five more kids.  Who cares about mental issues right? Steve proudly told called them his reversal kids and talked about it all the time even at the kids' weddings. It really sucks.

At John and Chelsy's wedding, he gathered all five reversal kids on stage and lectured the captive audience about his epiphany to get a reversal. It was horrible, even worse than Marlin Bontrager's ramblings. It's hard to top Marlin. (Bontragers also appeared on 19 Kids. Much was made of JB's disrespectful mispronouncing of their name.)

The Bontragers marriages are something.

One to a maxwell, two sons who married Bowers sisters in a double wedding, and 3 married into the Helfrich family.

3 unmarrieds left in the 18-21 range. I always thought Jackson or Johannah would marry one of them since they seemed to spend a lot of time visiting the family.

Jill posted a new video. in it Janessa is dragging one of the Keller boys around/arm around his neck and a rag in the other. Janessa isn't very nice. Jill just kept baby talking to the other Keller boy who was eating ice cream. no one stopped Janessa's bad behavior.

Small correction. It was the Bontrager brothers who married Bowers sisters (not twins). These couples went on to have their first two kids almost simultaneously. I think they have 3 or 4 kids now, it's hard to tell as they're pretty private.

thanks

Janessa is gonna end up just like her mother. Wanting all the attention, and sliding by on bad behavior by claiming that she’s better than others because of her faith. She just hasn’t gotten to the faith part yet. Or Jill will be too tired by the time Janessa grows up and Janessa will turn into a punk hard rocker or something.

What a special day this was! ❤️  Our children definitely deserved a day at SeaWorld!  😁  They work so hard in the Print Shop and on the road while traveling.  We love them beyond description!   One of the BEST choices we ever made was to allow God the choice of how big our family would be.  Yes, it has come with many moments of self sacrifice on David's and my part.....but the blessing we receive back FAR outweighs that!

Psalm 127:3 "Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate."

I guess this is payback for all of us ungodly sinners who lamented that Jill and Dave went to Epcot without the kids.  Of course, they might not have actually gone through the gates at Sea World, just posed in front.  They've done that before. As I recall, they visited Laura Ingalls Wilder's home/museum and peeked through the windows rather than pay admission.

I love how Jill talks about the sacrifices she and Dave have made in having a large family but not a word on all the things the kids have done without.

I just looked at her stories. The kids were inside.

and dang they got food too.

The grift or the tax returns must have been extra good this year.

I see a lack of modesty shirts on a few girls. But Nurie had to wear a jean jacket and the modesty head cover. 🙄

Close up of Sadie's outfit. A weird, thick fleece shirt under the coral/pink smock thing.

We were at disney the same week they were at seaworld at it was record heat every day. 85-90

I noticed Nurie wearing a head covering in another picture that someone posted here.  Is this a new thing, maybe demanded by her husband, or is her hair falling out in spots?  I wonder if her husband is enforcing stricter rules at home.  Maybe he does not want her to become like Mama and is keeping a tighter rein on his family.  I really hope she is okay.

I think it started with Brianne. Renee (and Kaylee) were shown wearing them for a bit when Sam U El and Brianne were still a thing.

I don't recall Nurie posting pics of her in the head covering on her own fb page.

Sea World performative modesty.

Head coverings.  Some orthodox Jewish women wear them.  Either wraps or wigs.  Some wraps are beautiful.  I am Reform Jewish and wouldn't wear a beautiful wrap because I think it is "cultural appropriation".   So I wonder what the Rodriguez girls are wearing them for?  They saw one and liked it? Amish women cover some of their hair?  Modest fashion statement?
