To Subscribe Or Not To Subscribe, That Is The Question: Paid Streaming Services

Why does Comcast keep them going, if they're losing so much money?

Because they own a massive catalog so the potential profit is substantial. Particularly once their preexisting streaming deals end. For example, they own the Jurassic Park franchise but were only able to add all the movies to Peacock on June 1st. Once they finally get Universal’s full catalog, Peacock will be a lot more appealing.

Hopefully they’ll be able to get a decent user interface by then.

I finally cut the cord. I'd been holding onto to cable because my 93 year old father wouldn't have been able to navigate streaming services. He passed earlier this year so I finally called Verizon to cancel the cable tv.

They did have a special for Netflix and Max bundle for $10/month so I got that. I already have Prime along with a lot of the free services like Pluto TV, Tubi, and Roku. I think that's enough.

My Verizon bill is going to drop over $100/month. Yay!

I canceled Peacock also before the big increase coming up in July.   It's hard for me to keep track of all my subscriptions, I have the cheap Netflix plan but keep forgetting to watch anything on it.   I keep Hulu just to watch Only Murders but did see the recent fine documentary on Sly Stone, RIP.

Actually the service I watch the most right now is MHZ Choice.  I don't mind the French language shows at all though I'm not fluent, I know enough to figure out when the lines vary from the subtitles somewhat.  I've been catching up on The Art of Crime, and now revisiting the classic Maigret with Bruno Cremer - I finished the last two episodes last week and am now revisiting some earlier favorites.

Cremer is so great as Maigret and there are a lot of other fine characterizations in the stories.

I watched it and realized I knew absolutely nothing about him.  The documentary, directed by Questlove, was excellent.

I'll cancel Hulu in time to get it for $1/month again next black Friday.  And I'd go ahead and do it now but every once in a while something like this pops up there.

I recently subscribed to MHz Choice, and I'm really enjoying that there's a wide variety of non-US content from every corner of the globe ready to be sampled. I'm currently enjoying Season 1 of Un Professore, a 2 season (so far - IMDb says there is a Season 3 on the way) Italian series that's a hybrid of To Sir With Love/Dead Poets Society/Stand and Deliver, with soap opera elements. It's filmed/set in Rome adjacent to the Coliseum, with a gorgeous troupe of talented Italian actors of all ages that I find very engaging.

My problem with streamers is that I have a hard time knowing what to watch. With broadcast tv, there are ads, and people talking about whatever show, and it helps me become aware of what is out there and seems like I'd like it.

But with streamers, there are zillions of choices and I have never heard of most of them and often have no idea what is worth my time.

Do you all just randomly sample things, or is there a source of info that helps you choose?

Mostly, I watch something on a streamer because I’ve heard about it here or on other forums I follow or because it’s been in the mainstream news. It’s pretty rare that I would check out something I hadn’t already heard of.

Edited to say, I wouldn’t just randomly sign up for a streaming service unless there was already something available that I couldn’t see elsewhere. Once I had it, I might check out other “suggested” shows, but if there was nothing I was interested in, I would let it drop, and come back later if there was something I wanted to watch.

I think it's maybe $79 a year?  I just mentioned July because that's when my subscription runs out, anyway I think it's gone up considerably.

Regarding Peacock: Isn’t that the “list price“? If that’s what they’re proposing to charge you, I’d suggest canceling before your next payment comes due. Then they may offer you a much better deal, or else go ahead and cancel then search for better deals. They’re definitely out there. I’ve never paid more than $30/year, which is about what it’s worth to me.

In addition to getting some great suggestions here in the Primetimer forums, I often ask IRL people I trust that know my tastes in shows if they have recommendations, both in and outside the US. Those recommendations usually lead to some interesting finds once I locate them on a streaming service.

In the case of Un Professore, it was recommended to me by a relative who lives in Italy, so I searched the title and found it was on MHz Choice. I had already been considering subscribing, as I have become burnt out on the repetitive/overmined concepts that make up the majority of US-based series, and have really enjoyed shows I've seen from places like Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain and Italy. I'm eager to expand my palate to include more locations that produce interesting programming that doesn't follow the same stale settings and plotlines.

For me, the best part of having a service like MHz Choice is the wide variety of "Country of Origin" options available. I've actually spent full weekends just reading the descriptions of shows I've never heard of, and sampling several first episodes of the ones that sound interesting. If I want to see more after Episode 1, I write down the name of the show, and then return and watch the rest of the episodes of those shows when I have time to savor them. It works for me. 🤷‍♂️

I think one good way to find a new streamer is to go on Youtube and see if there are any trailers for something that might interest you.   I started watching Brokenwood that way.    I think I used to watch MHZ back when it was free over the air on some channels, I started sampling the French language shows because they were easier for me to follow somewhat.  Art of Crime interested me because of the art theme, and Maigret was mentioned on "Ask Eddie Muller" (the "czar of noir") discussion show on Youtube.

Netflix is easy because they do a good job of doing a "what's coming up" section--although it has gotten tougher with their new interface.

But on the first of every month, I visit this series of blogs that has a list of all, or at least most of the upcoming debuts for the month and they put them in a post with descriptions, a teaser (but often in the original language with no subtitles), the debut date and the streaming site.

The European debuts are located here and it's where most of the MHZ stuff gets listed.

https://theeurotvplace.com/

And they have a similar blog for the UK shows, Australian and NZ shows and one for the rest of the world.

https://thebritishtvplace.com/

https://thedownundertvplace.com/

https://theglobaltvplace.com/

And it's lame but ever since I decided to quit cable, I have started a spreadsheet to keep track of shows I watch or am thinking about watching and where they stream.

I look for new show announcements in various publications.  The entertainment columns and publications now cover all streamers.

I like New York Magazine/Vulture and I check the Primetimer forums new show additions.
