S02.E19: I’ve Got a Little List

Recommended Posts

Enjoyed the episode!  Rod was an entitled psychopath but I got a kick out of watching him.  Elsbeth was even more colorful than usual tonight — I mean, where do they get these huge, bright coats?!!  They swallow Carrie Preston.

I am so sad to read that Kaya (Carra Patterson) will not be on the show on a regular basis after this season.  I love her and she’s so great with Elsbeth.

You would think the court would have dropped Elsbeth's charges when they found out that the person was guilty of the crime and was trying to prevent Elsbeth from investigating further.

The typical reaction to learning that a character is going to be imprisoned with people she helped convict would be terror, but apparently for Elsbeth this is some sort of opportunity — I guess relating to the evil judge — who is now dead??🤷‍♀️

I want Elsbeth’s school bus tote bag.

The officer inventoried the contents of her bag much more quickly than I would have expected.  Seems like she did downsize.

Yup.

Even her hair looked drab.

Ordinarily I support anybody’s decision to enjoy and explore their innate individuality, which fully envelops their personal choice to let their fashion freak flag fly - but given Elsbeth’s current environmental circumstances, jail may not be the best place to try to stand out from the crowd….  😉

Big Bird?

First thing I said when I saw her in that yellow coat. Elsbeth has gone full on Big Bird!

Bored rich guy saying 'It's not easy being me' made me immediately flash to Gob Bluth singing 'It's not easy being white." 😂

This show loves their in universe characters, Rich boy mentioned  TruRose from the Duck Confit episode.

I HATE the idea of Kaya leaving.  But at least they aren't killing her off like so many shows seem to be doing with their popular regulars.

I know the show wants to bring back a rogues gallery of former murderous guest cast, but the method of getting Elsbeth in their midst felt as convenient as some of Elsbeth's leap of logic.

Still... very interested to see how it plays out. Also still hanging onto hope the Judge will be exposed somehow.

Yeah, I'm not loving what they're doing with Kaya. Her relationship with Elsbeth has become a favorite of the fans so why do they want to mess with it? Sometimes I think shows are their worst enemies.  I'm hoping it's going to be a part of next season's season-long background plot similar to the evil judge this season. There might be a method to their madness with Kaya. So I'm not going to protest it too much...yet.

The writing on this show is still pretty good despite that. I felt an intense wave of sad empathy for Elsbeth when she started to break down over all she's been through recently. That felt very realistic. Seeing the judge murdered, feeling robbed of bringing him to justice, losing Kaya, getting tossed in jail unfairly, seeing this rich guy get away with murder and knowing he'll likely never really be brought to justice, etc. I get it. She's human and has limits, not just a quirky "character".

I feel like there's some kind of grander conspiracy going on here with that judge that was obviously a friend of Crawford's and this rich murderer who can buy anyone and everyone. That guy that was sent to manage the case - I don't buy that he was legit either. When the murderer said that everyone had a price, I felt like that was a sign that Elsbeth's being railroaded by people who are being paid off to throw her off and put her away.

That first prison they put her in - I didn't look that closely but it looked a lot like that Manhattan Correctional Facility where Jeffrey Epstein was when he committed suicide, and which closed in 2021. Not sure what it is now.

Did you actually read an article about this?  Is this why she's changing units?  Boo.

I read it - it's posted in the media thread.

It is unfortunate that Kaya is leaving the show ( as regular).
Her chemistry with Elsbeth was amazing, it will be tough to find a replacement.
As far as I understood, the actress wanted to leave the show, although with showbiz you can never know what is going on behind the scenes.

The whole darkish turn of the show was a surprise for me. But it is welcome, cause, how to say this in English, it gives a bit more character insight and development for Elsbeth, who till now was just the eccentric tad loony bright lawyer. But she is still human after all.

They're not really saying that but they're not really being very definite at all, which is making fans wonder what we're not being told and why. And the spin we get depends on the article, too. The comments under this article from TVLine are worth reading. Everyone is upset about it:

https://tvline.com/casting-news/elsbeth-carra-patterson-kaya-exit-explained-season-3-1235443104/

Theories already include Carra Patterson having personal issues to attend to like family illness or pregnancy, to friction on the set, to budget cuts, etc. All have happened before on other shows in similar situations. I wonder if Carra has taken on another role somewhere else that she isn't able to talk about yet which will make her less available for a while. The TV Line article keeps impressing the point that she'll be back and they'll have her on the show as much as they can have her. So who knows? 🤷‍♀️ No matter what, it still sucks.

He had more money than he had sense!  What idiot introduces himself into a murder investigation?  He probably would've gotten away with it, but he gave himself up on a silver platter!  Although clear to Elsbeth that he was the murderer, she still had to jump through a lot of hoops to prove it.

It was a rather depressing episode with the news of Kaya leaving and Elsbeth struggling mentally and then ending up in jail.  😢

If it were friction, I doubt they'd be bringing her back in a recurring capacity. As for budget cuts, there are only three regulars which is pretty small for a series.  And she probably makes the least of the three regulars.  Personal issues like a family illness make the most sense.  Either that or she's big theater person and would rather pursue that more.

But I will say that knowing this puts a lot of the choices made to upgrade her to detective make a lot more sense.  I couldn't understand why they'd do that because one of the more fun things they do is have a rotating detective work with Elsbeth.  I wonder if they'll add a new regular as an officer or if they'll keep just have two regulars.

I read elsewhere that the actor playing Kaya (Carra Patterson) wants to do more than just be a supporting character on a TV show. It wasn't specific (plays, TV, movies), just that she wants to do more, and that means change. It's a gutsy move, giving up a steady salary for the unknown. Good for her.

If so I wish her good luck but that's happened a lot and it often doesn't pan out as well as they'd hoped, like Denise Crosby, Shelley Long, Mischa Barton, Lauren Cohan and more. But the fact that the show keeps pushing the angle that she'll "be back" makes me think there's something else going on. Usually when actors leave to pursue better opportunities their management doesn't say that.

I will miss her.  I've really enjoyed seeing her character's relationship with Elsbeth develop.  Here's wishing her luck and if she's available, maybe she'll make some appearances on the show.

That's what happens when you think you're smarter than everyone else in the room.  Quite often you are NOT smarter than everyone else in the room and when they outsmart you, you are shocked and alarmed!  How could they?!?!  (Try being married to one.  Not a great life.)

My wife would probably agree.  🤣🤣🤣

My personal impressions were:

  1. Between seasons 1 and 2, Carra had some new opportunities coming her way - quite possibly on account of her performances in this series - and she wanted to pursue at least one or two of them while interest was still high.
  2. I thought it was damn nice (for a change) for TPTB to extend themselves to the point of developing a plot line for Kaya which allows her to pursue those opportunities, but still gives her flexibility to re-enter the series with minimal fuss.  On the Production side of things, the trend in recent years has been to simply kill off the character in some splashy (and completely unequivocally final) fashion which prohibits future appearances beyond the occasional “memory fade” or dream sequence - reference the departure of Rory Cochrane’s Tim Speedel/“Speed” character from CSI:Miami.

I watch shows like Forensic Files and you realize just how stupid some of these people are who plan out a murder and think they'll get away with it.  I've seen cases where the blood spatter pattern alone helps to solve a case, i.e. the murderer (spouse in some cases) sets up the crime scene to look like one thing, but the blood spatter shows that the crime couldn't have happened the way he/she said it did.  It's really interesting watching them unravel some guilty person's explanation!  Elsbeth has the gift of seeing right through people.  Although, in this latest case, the rich guy would've raised my hackles just for stopping at the crime scene.  That was a no-brainer!

That must've been tough.  I worked for a guy for many years who thought he was the smartest one in the room.  It was super annoying.  😜
