Having read some of the early series of books, I have a hard time accepting Angie as a 'good' influence.

She is a truly awful person in the books.  Granted her experiences were horrific and she did protect Will, but they should not be partners nor married.

Maybe I'll get over my feelings about her character as time goes on, but it is a bit tough right now.

If you're referring to my comment about Ormewood having something to say to Will about Angie, I don't think that's going soft on Angie. He seems protective of Angie and Faith, and I don't think that's a bad thing at all. 

Oh I agree they have a right to be angry that he disappeared without a word, I meant that they're on Angie's side and not his for his decision to arrest her. I hope they're at least sympathetic to both sides and don't make him out to be a villain. I also do like Ormewood's friendship with the two women, I just don't want it to cloud his reason with regards to Angie's actions and why Will did what he did. He can be both protective and yet understand the position Will was in once he learned the truth after murder teen's killing spree. 

Part of my problem with her actions is that she did project her own history onto murder teen and assumed she would do what Angie believes she herself would've done (take it as a second chance and move on) instead of seeing murder teen as her own person who could react very differently. She was young, with a good lawyer she could've probably gotten probation, considering the guy's history as a sex pest. To me, that showed her lack of judgment more than anything. I'd like to see her getting real help for her damage. Maybe we will find out she has been in therapy, mandated as part of her agreement. Better yet, she realized how bad she fucked up and sought out help on her own. 

I don't hate the character at all. They've just made her so damaged that all I want for her is get the help she needs.

I agree.  I don't get the complaints about "filler" episodes, especially for shows with longer seasons. If anything, longer seasons usually lead to better quality "filler."  I also think it's a common fallacy to think shorter seasons don't have filler episodes.  I'd argue it's easier for me to find pure filler in a Netflix 6-10 episode series than it is for me to find it in a longer season. Longer seasons let the creators do solid A, B and C plots and feel like they have the space to do something creative or do some character work.  If they know how to write episodic television, it's usually worthwhile.  It's when creators feel like their show has to dedicate all of their limited episodes to the ONE BIG PLOT that filler starts to creep in because that ONE BIG PLOT is rarely enough to sustain a sole focus over even a short season.

Procedurals set themselves up well for longer seasons because they're usually following a strict case-of-the-week formula that gives us weekly resolution and then peppering in the season long arc in bits throughout the season.

Marla Gibbs had a part on Gina Rodriguez's other show "Not Dead Yet", so Marla Gibbs probably had a glowing recommendation when this opportunity came around.

I think they've already established that Amanda understands why Will arrested Angie. When she went to get him, he told her he had no choice and she said she knows that, and I think she sounded like she meant it. If she was angry about him doing it, I think she would have said something else, along the lines of, maybe: we can talk about that later, but right now I need you to come back and deal with a different problem.

Actually, it will be interesting to see if Angie now also understands and forgives him. That would be a real character development.

Faith seemed upset that he left, she said so explicitly. She didn't ding him for disloyalty, only for abandonment.

I can easily imagine that some of the force is angry about it, just like they were angry that he exposed corruption leading up to season 1. But so far the main characters in the eneemble seem mostly upset about him abandoning them and noteven telling them he himself is okay.

I have to also say: I really enjoyed the little bit of show at the beginning of the episode, with him doing his PI job and locals interacting with him. It looked like that could have been a lot of fun to watch for a while, too.

I also think he did Angie a favor by leaving town with no forwarding address. 

If he had stayed around, he would have been called on to testify. Him blubbering on the stand about how he had to arrest her even though he loves her, would have made her look even worse to any adjudicating body.

I think they serve different purposes. Eduardo reads things for them, but the tape recorder is for making notes on the crime scene.

These two comments made me feel less alone. It's a network procedural, not a mini-series. The standard for decades (since the 1980s) which worked pretty well was case/mission of the week that was resolved and often something else that would run for multiple episodes or the entire season.

I feel like there should be room in the television/media landscape for series that intricate stories that are focused on season or series long story arc and other series that are more old-school case/mission of the week that is resolved by the end of the episode with possibly a season-long story arc happening in the background. The USA Blue Sky Era was great at having a story that was resolved at the end of the episode and a season-long story arc that took up a few scenes in each episode.

I would imagine that Eduardo could also convert his speech into text which would be useful in writing his police reports.

Great episode! So glad this show is back! On a super vain note, rugged and unshaven Will Trent is very easy on the eyes!

This is my favorite lighthearted cop show. I gave up on the rookie.  I couldn't stand another second of the witchy woman or Bailey. 

 

"I had to stalk you. How do you think that made me feel?" That made my night. Love the dynamic between those two. 

Also, I am on the not a Gina Rodriguez fan boat. They should have taken a vote before adding her lol.  she isn't needed and doesn't add anything special. 

 

I’ve read all the books except the latest. The books are definitely not lighthearted, but I’m not complaining.

The books were definitely more graphic. I love the books and the show. While they are very different in many respects they fit so well together in the same universe. I think that may have a lot to do with retaining the main characters underlying personalities. It also gave Angie a wonderful opportunity for improvement that the books didn’t give.

I've never watched her other shows, but I saw her on an episode of (I think) Jeff Lewis' home renovation show, and she was pretty insufferable. She thought herself very adorable.

I too tried reading the books.  I read a few of them and then had to stop.  I am in no way a prude but I don't care for all the graphic sex stuff with my crime novels.

Off topic, but I just have to share: a friend of mine reads (narrates) audio books.  Several of these are romance novels and a fair few have graphic(-ish) sex scenes.  He always has to repress the giggles when he's reading these, mostly because sex scenes are so often so badly written.

I pay attention to the weirdest things. When the employee handed them their clamshell sandwiches, I thought "but they didn't pay"!

I backed it up and sure enough the DA tapped her card, but I'm pretty sure Will never did.

So, I wasn't a regular 'appointment' viewer of Not Dead Yet, Gina Rodriguez's previous ABC project.  I was reading WT content elsewhere (reddit) and someone mentioned that Marla Gibbs's daughter was on that show.  Wonder whether GR will have a scene w/ MG so she can check off working w/ both mother & daughter.

I normally don't care that much about appearances beyond establishing the character.

But.....I had a pretty serious twinge of disappointment when Will shed his scruff and got all 'cleaned up and proper.'
