James Gunn’s Superman is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025. It’s both written and directed by Gunn and is set to be the first feature film in a highly anticipated new shared DC Universe.

Starring [David] Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician) as Superman and Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor, Superman also features Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, María Gabriela De Faría as the Engineer, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher and Terence Rosemore as Otis.

I swore I wouldn’t let DC sucker me into this…and then they bring in Krypto.

Well it can’t be any worse than Batman vs Superman, right?

Any movie with such a good boy in it is worth watching if you ask me. I was very happy to see Krypto.

This looks promising! I think this movie will do a great job balancing the lighter aspects of Superman with deeper pathos. Also great to see color back in a Superman film. Snyder really did Superman dirty with his dark gritty grim-dark take. Works for Batman, not for Superman.

For a "teaser", they kind of showed a lot? "Show all the characters in this" seemed to be a major mandate here. But yes, nice to see Superman in daylight! Not a fan of Gunn, so I'm only cautiously optimistic.

I'm wondering if they put a piece on Corenswet's head for the Clark Kent look, or did they tease his actual hair? In any case, they sold the alterego aspect.

Which is my only fear for the movie. Too many characters to introduce, so how much are we really getting on Clark/Superman?

Max Lord, Metamorpho, Lex Luthor, Hawkgirl, Kara Zor-El, Mr Terrific, Guy Gardner, the Kents.

It just seems so overloaded.

I've not been excited by Superman since I was about nine years old - I loved the Christopher Reeve movies (at least the first couple) as a kid, but as I got older I found the character boring and DC's approach to making movies was terrible (Zack Snyder is a hack).

But all it took was that John Williams score kicking in to make me feel like a kid again. And this teaser really worked. It set the tone of the movie (I hope) as dramatic without being dark, fun without being a comedy.

Yeah, I can see why people worry about the glimpses of so many other DC characters in a Superman movie, but it's just a case of getting the balance right. Except for Krypto, we can have as much Krypto as possible (I think James Gunn must have loved CGI Cosmo in Guardians, and wanted to develop it more).

I like the casting - Brosnahan seems perfect for Lois, Corenswet certainly looks the part as both Clark and Superman, Nicholas Hoult should make a dastardly lex (Huzzah!).

My Superman lore is a bit out of date, can someone tell me more about the SuperPuppy? The dog obviously has powers but is it from Krypton? They have dogs just like Earth dogs except superpowered? Or was there some accident/incident on Earth that turned a regular dog into SuperDog?

His name is Krypto (the Superdog); seeing as how it's comics, he's had several different origins, but the main one is that he's a dog from Krypton and, like Superman, has powers on Earth with its yellow sun. He's been the pet of Superman, and others related to him over the years.

I wonder who could have beaten Superman down to that extent?  Surely it's too early for Doomsday?

While Doomsday can Hulk jump, I think Supes getting thrown into the ground like that is probably more from a flying enemy. Or maybe a kaiju. But the lack of follow-up, allowing Krypto to drag Superman home, may mean it was more of a one-off event. Maybe he got hit with a nuke?

My understanding is that while he was writing the script for Superman, his family adopted a dog, and seeing how the dog was, tearing up his house when they first brought him home, and then finally coming around and being less destructive, decided to add Kypto to the story.

Oh so did I. For me The Reeve movies (just the first two) are the ULTIMATE Standard-I don't care what anyone says. he WAS Superman.

I wasn't interested in any other live versions-Cavill's turn was such a disappointment as was Routh's. So it was Timm's animated universe that kept me.

Then THIS. I won't lie-my heart picked up and started racing. Please Gunn, don't disappoint!

I really did not like the way Clark Kent appeared in the trailer.  I hope that he is not portrayed as some bumbling idiot.

I also do not like the usage of the John Williams theme, despite how cool it sounded in the trailer.  This film should try and distance itself as much as possible from the old Donner films, in my view, so hearing it is a bit concerning.

I enjoyed the style and tone, Brosnahan as Lois, and Krypto.  I hope that Hoult does well as Luthor.

That's the most unflattering hairstyle for Nathan Fillion since Buffy.

Agreed.  I don't think that it was absolutely necessary but if they were going to go with that style, then they could have done a better job with the hair piece.

Bumbling, yes.  Idiot, no.

One of the things I liked about James Gunn's work with the Guardians of the Galaxy is that those movies were always fun, and colorful.  I always noticed the colors, and this Superman world also appears to be very bright and vivid.

I could see DC rivalling the MCU if this trailer is an accurate representation.

It's clearly supposed to look goofy (totally comics-accurate).

It's a little overdone to me, and doesn't look natural like in the comics.  Maybe it's Nathan Fillion himself that's the problem.  I don't think that hairstyle really works for him.

Also, "comics accurate" doesn't really mean much here, since Guy Gardner has had numerous hairstyles in the books.

And why is he bumbling?  Since when is Clark Kent bumbling?

Don't you remember Christopher Reeves' Kent being bumbling?

I absolutely do.  And that's the problem.  It seems like Gunn's film is attempting to connect back to the Donner films instead of moving forward on its own.

That's a very common version of the Clark Kent workplace persona.

Not in the comic books, it isn't.  Clark wasn't some bumbling nerd.  Reeve brought that persona into the films and some subsequent adaptations felt the need to copy Reeve's interpretation.

I don't know, Reeves portrayal of Superman was pretty classic, and consistent with the comic book character IMO.  And it's clear Gunn is taking it further than the Donner films did, bringing in Krypto, Mr. Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl.  Looks like he's building a new DCU to me.

Anyway, there were a lot of different comic book takes on Superman.  I'm sure there are plenty of bumbling Clark Kent scenes to be found.

Also don't forget George Reeves' Superman from the 1950's (before my time)...

(JoBlo Superheroes)

I know nothing of the Superman comics. But reruns of The Adventures of Superman aired consistently during my childhood, so I have some familiarity with George Reeves' portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman. His Clark Kent wasn't a bumbling nerd; he was a serious reporter and also an amiable, easy going work colleague. As the clip shows, this Clark was invited to and went to parties!  I don't remember if Phyllis Coates/Noel Neill's Lois Lane had a romantic interest in Superman the way Margot Kidder's did.

Frankly, IMO, if Christopher Reeves had portrayed Clark Kent the same, I don't even see Kidder's Lois being that intrigued romantically with Superman. She would have been working besides, and attending gatherings with, a competent, hardworking, affable, good looking, SINGLE, Clark Kent who was right there. LOL.

She did. There was one episode where she had a dream where the special prosecutor was dirty and Supes gave her a diamond ring by crushing the raw diamond and and making it a ring. I can’t remember all episodes, but most had her admiring him.

I think Reeve went with the bumbling Clark around Lois and others to differentiate between Clark and Supes. And his revelation was masterful. Routh tried to do the same as a homage to Reeve, but failed. Let’s see how this one does.

Ah, thank you. Come to think of it, I probably remember more of the show overall than individual episodes.

But yeah, Christopher Reeve is Superman to me. I don't compare the rest because, for me, they don't come anywhere close.  Maybe this new guy will.

The Superman movies were before my time but my mom loved them and I grew up watching them on video, so Chris Reeve was the perfect Superman to me as well. I think he worked so well because he was so believable as two different people- it really wasn't just the glasses that disguised him.

I also watched Lois & Clark, Smallville, and the animated shows. I loved Superman & Lois and I love My Adventures With Superman, which is on right now. I'm a huge Superman fan. I hated the Zack Snyder Superman movies, it was just a terrible take on the character.

I think this guy looks pretty good in the trailer but I want to see some shots of him smiling, because I think that's the other thing about Reeve's Superman- he was so friendly and happy to be helping people. I remember one interview of him where he said his basic take on Superman was that "he's your friend." And that's perfect, imo. He has godlike powers, but he's not a god, he's your friend.

Well, that's always been the core of Superman.  He could impose his will on everyone and solve virtually every problem.  Two countries at war?  Simple, he'll fly in and disarm both sides.   People starving?  No biggie, he can deliver food.  Greedy corporations refuse to donate food?  Yeah, good luck stopping him from just swooping in and taking it for the greater good. But he doesn't do it because he doesn't see himself as some all powerful enforcer of doing the right thing, he's just lending a friendly hand and hoping it inspires others to do the same.  I'm sure that infuriates some people (you're letting people suffer, you reluctant asshole) but that's the core of his character.

"One Of My Greatest Moments In Filmmaking": James Gunn Addresses Casting David Corenswet As Superman And Rachel Brosnahan As Lois Lane

ScreenRant’s Rob Keyes attended a Superman movie set visit back in June alongside a handful of outlets during production in Cleveland, Ohio, where members of the press spoke with Gunn about the process for the DC reboot. One of the big topics of discussion that was brought up was casting Corenswet and Brosnahan for the Superman and Lois roles, as Gunn went into depth about tapping the duo for his DC Universe:

James Gunn: Yeah. The truth is, I think I took cues from their casting process when I cast Chris [Pratt] in the Star-Lord role. So I've been taking tips from those casting processes all along. I've always believed that the casting is the most important and that as long as the actor is the best possible actor for that role, that's more important than it is for a name. Especially in today's market, which is you see movie stars are not the same as they used to be in terms of you can't open up, like what it was 15 years ago, open up a Melissa McCarthy movie. Instantly, you're going to make this much money. Open up an Adam Sandler movie, instantly you're going to make this much money. It's not like that anymore. So I just wanted to go for who was the best Superman.

A lot of people auditioned, and the weird thing is I was so crazily nervous about getting Superman ready, on very first day of the tapes coming in, I had seen [David] Corenswet in Pearl. So I said, “Get him on, get him on.” I said, get him on the tape. And then the very first day came in David's tape and Rachel's tape, and I saw both of those and I went, “Oh my God, we're going to be okay.” Because both of these people are amazing. There were other really good actors for both of those roles, but at the end of the day, it was both of them as individuals.

Then we did something that I didn't do with Guardians, which is I cast the two leads together and they all came in and we had this 15-minute-long scene that they have to act together and talk and discuss and just communicate. And I mixed and matched all the different couples and it was something magic when the two of them came up. I got to say, it's one of my greatest moments in filmmaking.

Yeah, Gunn said initially he was going to skip the red trunks, but Corenswet convinced him to go with them:

Quote

“We were trying on all these different versions, and we screened tested with trunks and no trunks,” Gunn explained. “And one of the things David said is that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers. He shoots beams out of his eyes… He’s this incredibly powerful, could be considered scary, individual and he wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity. So he dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that makes people unafraid of him, that shows that hope that shows that positivity.
