Here's the video for those who haven't seen it. Jon shares my frustration  about the Democrats. The opposing party is two months away from taking insurmountable power, and they are doing NOTHING about it. Where is the nobility of having the high ground if you're going to wind up not doing anything? "When they go low, we go high" doesn't cut it these days. Go below the belt. Set fire to the enemy. Set fire to yourselves. DO SOMETHING.

Add me to the list of frustrated people.  Stop trying to act like everything is business as usual.  And for the love of Mike STOP trying to justify this loss.  Just today I was watching news and the delusional pundits were grasping at straws saying Trump didn’t win by THAT much.   No one gives a shit!  It’s too late for taking the high road.  When they go low, which they do on the reg, we need to go LOWER. Burn everything to the ground.  And like you said JUST DO SOMETHING.

I'm still not feeling hopeful. Once again, my mind cycles through unrealistic fantasies, most of them involve 9 to 5-style torture. And yeah, I know Dolly Parton wouldn't condone Donald Trump getting hoe-tied. Well, not that much.

I need hope. I need a "dub" from the good guys. Juan Soto could sign with the Mets, and that wouldn't cheer me up that much. Damn, after the Mets lost the NLCS, I was feeling hopeful for their future. If you know about the Mets, you'd understand that's pretty hard to do without imagining any and all potential setbacks. This was back in October, where I was convinced Kamala could win the Presidency. Shows me what I know, right?

Here's a video I keep coming back to these days:

But the MAGA crowd will literally give up their social security and their medical care and their children's futures and still feel that Trump is their messiah.  The others, the ones who voted - or claimed to vote - because "it's the economy" are the ones who may, possibly, wake up and realize they've been taken in by a snake oil salesman.

But these aren't the ones who are going to be really hurt, and we all know that - what makes me so angry is that these people -- every single one who voted for Trump or who pulled a Pontius Pilate and didn't vote at all -- don't give a damn about refugees, migrants, immigrants, women or any of the many marginalized groups that now have targets on their backs thanks to the rise of Fascism in your country.

That is simply not true. You can't put everyone that voted for Trump in one general box. Without going into a long dissertation, allow me to share this. I take no credit, but it addresses some of the issues being tossed around:

But too many of them are.  And the ones that aren't don't seem to have a problem with the ones that are.  Yes these people existed before Trump but he gave them license to voice their hate and stoked it to his own ends.

Not after so many people literally warned them how bad he'd be ahead of time.

Trump himself told us what he was going to do.  We all believed him. Did his base not believe him? Did they think they would be immune to his harmful policies? Harris said she wanted to make things better for all Americans, including those who weren't going to vote for her.  Trump said he was going to punish his enemies, meaning anyone who didn't support him.  So I guess his supporters thought that meant it was only those people who would have to pay higher prices and lose their health insurance and have family members deported.

We KNOW this, because we literally went through this with Trump just four years ago.

For me what it comes down to with people who voted for Trump this time around are:

(1) Did they vote for him because they believed him when he said he won in 2020?

(2) Did they vote for him even though they knew he lost in 2020?

Either scenario is appalling to me but the second is even worse because that means they knowingly and intentionally voted for a man who tried to overthrow their government.

(3) They held their nose (so they say) and voted for Trump because "he can fix the economy".

These people are deluded.  The US economy is mirroring the world economy right now and time and good decisions will hopefully bring about improvements but people want simple solutions to complex problems and if you want simple, well I guess Trump is your man.

(4) They voted for him because he "hates all the people your relatives hate".

And these are the people saying things like the biggest problem facing America are transgender people...I can't even with these people.  Beyond contemptible.

Bottom line if you voted for Trump you voted against democracy.

This is what they say to make themselves feel better. Deep down they know it's not true.

A lot of these people are the people who bought his bibles. And his shoes. And now I hear he is selling guitars.  Yes really.  They see  him as some savior. He is going to save the economy. He is going to save us from socialists. And liberals. And brown people. And transgender people.  Bigger question is who is going to save us from him.

Same people who said same sex marriage would lead to people marrying their toasters. Most likely the same people who thought Haitian people were eating pets in Ohio. They are afraid of whatever Trump and by extension the Republican party tells them to be afraid of.

For anyone who has genuine religious faith this is not directed at you.  But for all the evangelical voters who voted for Trump I think they enjoy having someone tell them who to hate. It's probably the people they already hate but if Trump tells them to then that must mean they were right along. I mean these are the people who think there is going to be a violent bloody battle and all the non believers will be defeated right?   So to them Trump is their team leader.  And they are obedient if nothing else when it comes to their leader.

They voted for all of that.  And some are now concerned, after seeing who he’s promising jobs to.

The majority who voted for Trump know perfectly well what he's capable of and they voted for him anyway. It's frustrating and heartbreaking and in some ways it feels like hate won.

That being said, @Soapy Goddess is right that there are people who voted for Trump because they had valid concerns and thought he was their best option for having those concerns addressed. They aren't the majority, but they do exist and it is important to reflect on why the democrats lost certain people so that they can start winning elections again.

One of my friends just had a baby. Her baby was about two weeks old when she voted for Trump. To be perfectly frank, she doesn't know much about politics. (I'm actually being kind here. She knows next to nothing.) She's the kind of friend you go shopping with and get makeup/workout/ selfcare/cooking tips from. She's a wonderful person she just doesn't really care about non pop culture current events including politics.

She's a Black woman who has had two family members be victims of crime this year alone. In addition to that she had to drive by the same two homeless encampments every day for years without any sign that things are going to change or get better. Keep in mind she's also not reading or watching real news. Just TikTok vids. She's the one I mentioned earlier who was watching those scare tactic vids on migrant caravans. I was surprised that she would even look at something like that, but apparently her sister started sharing those sorts of videos with her.

In her mind she voted because she thinks it's the best way to keep her baby safe. She also feels that she was better off financially under Trump. She doesn't understand the nuances regarding inflation and the pandemic. She's just going by her lived experience.

She wasn't voting because she wanted to punish a bunch of marginalized people. She wasn't voting because she's in favor of racism or because she thinks Trump "won" back in 2020.

I explained a few of the reasons I couldn't vote for Trump. I didn't go into a whole tirade about it because I didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable. I just narrowed it down knowing that he's a liar and a terrible person. I doubt very much he's going to make things better and am pretty confident it will only get worse. I should have brought up January 6th, but it didn't seem like the right moment.

Anyway, I mention all of this because I feel like there's a 5th category to the ones @Dimity mentioned.

5) People who voted for Trump because they misguidedly think he will make their lives better. They don't know much about Trump or his policies apart from a few soundbites. They probably vaguely heard about him having legal troubles but figured they must not be that serious since he's still running for office. They weren't holding their noses while they voted for him because they really don't know much about him.

If this election has taught me anything it's that there are *a lot* of uninformed voters in this country.

Not just uniformed. Misinformed.  It's one thing to not know something. It's a different thing to believe something that is untrue and continue to believe it even when evidence is shown to prove it's untrue.  That is how Comet Pizza ended up being shot up by a crazy guy with a gun.

It is shocking to me that adults who have lived through the last 8 years are still unaware of what Trump did, what he stands for and what he wants to do.  Saying these people are uninformed is just being way too kind.

That's fair. I was trying to not be too harsh, but I agree.

I also agree with @bluegirl147's point that it's people being uninformed combined with rivers of misinformation. That's what I mean when people are watching TikTok videos that are designed to put fear into people.

I also think there are people who choose to remain ignorant about certain topics for their own peace of mind. They don't want to dwell on the stuff they can't control, so they tune out and just focus on what brings them joy. In some ways I wish I could be like that, but I feel like I want to continue to do my best to balance both worlds. I want to be reasonably informed, but I don't want this stuff to be the bulk of what I think about throughout the day. I feel like I'd get depressed that way.

I think this thread has been helpful for me to talk out everything I've been feeling since the election, so I thank everyone who has contributed to this conversation. It feels good to have a place to vent a bit about how we ended up here *again*.

It's also a good way for all of us to know there are like minded people.  Where I live I am surrounded by MAGA.  It's disheartening.  But this thread has given me hope we will someway come out of this.

I could see that. There was a study many years ago that found Fox News watchers less knowledgeable than people who watched no news at all.

Doom scrolling is a thing.  Not something I do.  The reality I see is enough. I don't need to go looking for more. I do think we need more places like this thread.  I don't know if right wingers are better at finding each other or if they have more time on their hands but overall I do think people who are more liberal/progressive have a harder time finding each other. Especially if you live in a red area. I have very few friends. Online and in real life.  For two reasons. One I prefer it that way and two I have dealbreakers.  And there were times I met someone and thought oh they seem cool I could hang with them and then they say something like Obamacare will be the death of us all.  It was an ER nurse that said that.

I absolutely believe that.  I also think it has to do with how often people are exposed to Fox.  They don't just see it in their homes by choice.  I have seen it on in doctor's office waiting rooms (which makes me want to change doctors).  Restaurant/bars.  Nursing home common rooms.

Back when I lived in the city and took taxis a lot the common thing I found in almost every taxicab was that the drivers had their radios tuned to a very right wing radio station.  I was a captive audience and it was awful.   If those men (and yes it was always men for me) were listening to this hour after hour, day after day, it's no wonder they believe the things they do.

In the early 2000s the company I worked for always had the radio set to a local easy listening/soft rock station.  September 12, 2001 that radio station started airing Rush Limbaugh.  All day long.  They did it for a couple weeks.  I remember thinking if this is what people are turning to in a time like this we are in big trouble. When they went back to regular programming one of their DJs said on air if he saw a Muslim he would spit on them.  That DJ is still a DJ in my area. He has been at every station I think.  I no longer listen to FM radio but when I did and I heard his voice I would change the station.

Someone on CNN says that Vance is tasked with buttonholing the Senators for the confirmations.  Although I hate to use task as a verb.

Gonna veer into grammar-talk: I'm the same way with 'buttonhole' or 'buttonholing' as a verb.  And (not mentioned by @EtheltoTillie) the word 'ask' as a noun: "what's your ask here?"

From CNBC, November 21 2024

Matt Gaetz said Thursday he is withdrawing his name from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. attorney general.

“I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback - and the incredible support of so many,” Gaetz said in a statement posted on his X account.

“While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” said the former Republican congressman from Florida.

“There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General,” he said.

Yeah, I have one longtime online friend, who lives thirty minutes from me, and I keep forgetting. After the election, she said that we should meet up, but I'm so used to being alone now, my social anxiety is dialed up to a million. Since my mum died, and she was mostly housebound for a few years before that (2016), not having a relationship with my sister, and her not being here since April 2017, I haven't had other women around me, since she was last here. One of mum's friends invited me to join a group that got her painting again, last year, but I was dealing with vertigo, and I forgot to get back to her.

@Anela - please accept long distance hugs from someone you don't know.  I too have suffered from paralysing anxiety (social, general, whatever) since my husband died in 2013.  It took years to right itself & I was able to get out (was even able to get over to Ireland to see some friends/family in both '15 & '18).  It improved more and more and then BAM!!! - 45 & C19 in '19 & '20 brought it back.  And again, improvement (more trips to Ireland to see family/friends in '22 & '23 & '24) until the election earlier this month (and a bit from some still-undiagnosed health issues earlier this year) has it rearing its ugly head.

I've had to force myself to get out*.  I've a couple friends who're going thru similar stuff.  We all force ourselves to get out.  And we forgive ourselves when we just can't.  Those undiagnosed health issues sent me to a gym & working w/ a personal trainer.  She helps keep me accountable to myself, so that's a help.

I hope you (& all of us really) are able to put any/all anxiety squarely where it belongs: your rear-view mirror.

*And sometimes, when it's just too much, I'm reminded of the opening lines of the song Sister Golden Hair:

Well, I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on Monday and I got myself undressed

Dude is SOOOOO guilty.  I don't get why he was at a party sounded like it was mostly younger people.  I mean, sure, he was still in his 30s when the party involving the assault of the underaged girls happened, but when I was 34 or however old he was at the time, I was already a married adult doing adult things.  Wild parties happened a decade ago.  That said, 17 year olds shouldn't be at wild parties either (saying this as a mom, of course).  But a 30-something at a wild party is way worse - especially when you're taking advantage of people.
