Chit-Chat: The Feels

I was pretty sure I'd recently heard the correct, ridiculously small amount of fentanyl that had been seized at the Canadian/US border in the most recent fiscal year, but I wanted to find a good source to back it up.

Tariff threats take aim at fentanyl trafficking. Here’s how the drug reaches the US

Fentanyl is also made in Canada and smuggled into the U.S., but to a much lesser extent. U.S. customs agents seized 43 pounds (19.5 kilograms) of fentanyl at the Canadian border during the last fiscal year, compared with 21,100 pounds (9,570 kilograms) at the Mexican border.

The Canadian tariff is bullshit.

You know why the cartels send their drugs here? Because there is a market for them.  Maybe if we did a better job of helping drug addicts get the help they need to get clean there wouldn't be such a big market. Or maybe if we had a better safety net and people didn't fall into despair when they need help just to survive they wouldn't turn to drugs.  Or maybe if the Sackler family hadn't knowingly sold and marketed a highly addictive pain killer as not being addictive there wouldn't have been an opioid crisis.

Seriously.  It's only a problem when poor non-white neighborhoods have drug problems.  Nevermind that there are plenty on white, suburban areas where drugs are rampant.  As as said above the opioid crisis brought in a whole new group of people who inadvertently became users because the Sacklers lied about the addictive properties. We're facilitating our own problem.

The Sacklers make a great scapegoat, but they were not the ones writing prescriptions for Oxycontin or any other opioid. Nor did any of their sales reps. Those sales reps may have lied about how addictive Oxycontin was and yet enough doctors and healthcare administrators bought into those lies. I was a pharmacy technician during the rise of the Opioid Epidemic. When I first started working in that position around 2000, Oxycontin and fentanyl were rarely prescribed. Then something happened in healthcare, and pain management doctors began writing scripts en masse. That something was not a bunch of doctors in multiple states falling for the lie that Oxycontin was not addictive. And the Sacklers were not the only people making money off of this. They were just the easiest ones to place blame.

Oh I agree. There are dozens of books detailing everything from doctors, wholesalers and pharmacists who knew how much it was getting out of control but still acted like nothing was going on because they were getting their cut. Some fell for the lie but most saw a lucrative payday.  Absolutely shameful, and people are still experiencing the fallout from it.

My husband suffered from chronic pancreatitiis.  They say it's one of the most painful things you can have.  He was sent to a pain clinic in 2009/2010. Thankfully he was never prescribed Oxy.

I work for a pest control company and we had a client who was a pain doctor.  We serviced his office and multimillion dollar home.  He was arrested and convicted of writing fraudulent prescriptions to be sold on the streets.  He was sentenced to 57 months.  I think he should have been sentenced to 57 years.  How many people died because of him? Oh and all his assets were seized.

There were quite a few doctors like that especially in Florida. Many of the pharmacists I worked with would do whatever they could to not fill these prescriptions and hope the patients did not complain to corporate about it. Because middle management saw zero downside to filling these prescriptions as long as no laws were broken right up until the DEA finally stepped in and Walgreens and CVS changed course. Then those managers got fired for telling their pharmacists to fill these prescriptions or find a new job.

The state i live in has a county that had one pharmacy that sold enough oxy for each county resident to have had something like a thousand each.  So many people turned a blind eye simply to make money. I watched the Hulu series Dopesick about the opioid crisis and it was just so depressing and caused me so much anger I can't ever watch it again

I was always shocked to hear about doctors who would do this, at least in part because we once had the kind of doctor who would never dream of giving you a letter to take time off work if you were able to drag yourself into his office.  And you needed to practically be at deaths door before he'd write a prescription for tylenol with codeine, let alone anything stronger.  I used to get mad a bit about this, but thinking it over, I'm thinking he was on the right track.

In Trumpian news - Charlie Angus, one of our MPs was on CNN today, here's a quote from his FB page:

Quote

Explaining to CNN the economic chaos that Donald Trump is about to unleash on his own people. We will never break or concede to an erratic thug who seems like Al Capone in his syphilitic phase trying to pull a shakedown.

Being a doctor of medicine does not mean a person is ethical or smart. My congressman is a doctor who has voted for acts his medical experience should tell him are bullshit, but Republican trumps basic medical facts. Dude is a urologist but votes yes on HR 28 - Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act (the keep the evil transes away from our gentle, sweet, innocent girls act).

It is infuriating, the government pays the chicken farmers for every chicken with bird flu they have to kill.  So they kill them all.  But they don’t use traditional methods in order to kill them because it’s cheaper (and somehow legal) to mass kill.  They do this by suffocation and heat, it’s called ventilation shutdown.  Or they bury them alive.
Bottom line is, the prices should not go up because the farmers are still paid.

Re the USAID, I’m glad that it is getting an overhaul.  The White Coat Waste Project, an anti-animal experimentation group uncovered that USAID funded millions in grants toward cruel experiments on animals all over the world.

You’re glad that a private citizen just took over a major part of the government?

they’re boycotting US products, because of the unnecessary tariffs placed on them by the dictator-on-day-one.

Apparently Trump has shifted his attention away from the faux border issue and is now whining because Canada has strict rules around foreign banks setting up business here (gee I wonder why Trump cares about that hmmm?) and he's back to whining that we're ungrateful for not wanting to be the 51st state.

And of course this is just Trump and his tariffs.  Lots of horrible things are happening under his 'guidance' possibly the worst being the cutting off of foreign aid.  Trump and his crowd have no problem with little foreign children dying of starvation or preventable illnesses.  I truly hope there is a god and a hell.

Absolutely.  I meant myself personally.  I'm fully aware that stores like Target and Walmart are the only options price wise and availability.  I definitely don't judge others.  It just sucks that big box conglomerates have prices out the little guy on so many areas.

The whole banking thing makes me laugh.  There was a reason why our '08 wasn't "as bad" (just being nice) as it was south of the border.  And we unlike the US, we don't need a third party app to transfer money to people.  We have Interac which we can do directly from our own accounts (either browser or app).

ETA:  as for calling the thread "Current Affairs" it makes me think of that tabloid show back in the olden days.

Funny, my husband and I were just talking about this.  Despite the fact that Trump blinked (at least for now) we're still going to go out of our way to buy Canadian and avoid US as much as we can - likely for the next 4 years.  Anyway we did a mental tour around our small town and realized that with the exception of McDonalds, Pizza Hut and Wendy's we pretty much are surrounded by Canadian chains or local mom and pops.  So yay for us 😃.

My big problem is what to do about amazon.  I admit, especially during the pandemic I kinda got hooked.  Need to ease off my addiction for sure.

I'm not giving up Amazon (I just don't go out unless I have to), Instacart or UberEats (I order from local restaurants anyway).  Or Netflix and Disney+.  My laptop is a Macbook and my phone is an iPhone.  Those stay.  Besides, if I switch to, say, Samsung, I'll be using Android anyway.

I've never dealt with Amazon because I disapprove of the guy who owns it & their labor practices.  So I just boycott them, along with the several other hateful enterprises on my list.  I know I'm lucky to be able to go out to shop for myself & don't have to depend on delivery but, as long as that's the case, I'm taking advantage of it.

Any court action will not make a difference.  Musk and his minions will laugh at any court order; the Supreme Court has given the president immunity and Trump will say he was acting at the behest of the president.  Musk has this information now and will be selling it to the highest bidder.  China, Russia and other bad actors don't need to try to hack our systems.  The MAGA voters have done it for them.

He does not have immunity for what he's allowing Musk to do at Treasury. The power of the purse belongs to the Legislative branch, not the Executive. Appropriated spending created by Congress can only be canceled or amended by Congress. Article 1 of the Constitution.

I'm not talking about money.  I'm talking about the personally identifiable information Musk is stealing.  All federal employees, all military employees, Social Security recipients, anyone who has ever gotten paid by the U.S. Treasury (received a tax refund ever?) have had their names, Social Security numbers, mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and banking information stolen.  Identity theft is supposed to be against the law.

I have ZERO hopes the Supreme Court will act to stop this.  The majority of them are grifters just like Donald and Elon.

Thanks!

Even a one-in-a-million chance of this massive intrusion being stopped beats a zero-in-a-million chance.

No point in throwing up one's hands until we at least find out if this court action might result in  at least putting the brakes (if not put a halt to) that whole deal.

If nothing else, they've got gotten shown that there IS an attempt to legally resist this rather than all those in the system just sitting on their hands and letting them have at it with no attempts to at lease pause things. . .

Not looking to start WW3, but I have a bone to pick about the thread in general (and CM is well aware). I don't think anyone begrudges "the feels", but by the same token, the other side has feelings too. No, they're not the same feelings, but they are still feelings nonetheless.

What irritates me the most is that PT was all about inclusivity until this thread appeared...essentially ignoring the right. IOW, how can PT and the majority on this thread be all inclusive for everything and everyone except those that have a different POV. We're not all monsters or terrible people who are misinformed. We simple see things in a different way.

And while it's definitely not the left way, we still live in a world of differing opinions where we should be able to express our feelings. And no, I'm not going to be the lone ranger to create a separate thread as previously suggested because it's not the same as being sanctioned by PT. Because if PT truly cared about total inclusivity, it would have already existed. Obvious oversight.

Just remember, not all of us agree with ALL of Trump's policies. A simple analogy would be a restaurant I've always frequented. I don't have to enjoy everything on the menu in order to like the atmosphere.
