DENVER (AP) — A Colorado man is facing possible bias-motivated charges for allegedly attacking a television news reporter after demanding to know whether he was a citizen, saying “This is Trump’s America now,” according to court documents.

Patrick Thomas Egan, 39, was arrested Dec. 18 in Grand Junction, Colorado, after police say he followed KKCO/KJCT reporter Ja’Ronn Alex’s vehicle for around 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the Delta area. Alex told police that he believed he had been followed and attacked because he is Pacific Islander.

After arriving in Grand Junction, Egan, who was driving a taxi, pulled up next to Alex at a stoplight and, according to an arrest affidavit, said something to the effect of: “Are you even a U.S. citizen? This is Trump’s America now! I’m a Marine and I took an oath to protect this country from people like you!”

Alex, who had been out reporting, then drove back to his news station in the city. After he got out of his vehicle, Egan chased Alex as he ran toward the station’s door and demanded to see his identification, according to the document laying out police’s evidence in the case. Egan then tackled Alex, put him in a headlock and “began to strangle him,” the affidavit said. Coworkers who ran out to help and witnesses told police that Alex appeared to be losing his ability to breathe during the attack, which was partially captured on surveillance video, according to the document.

Until recently I had no idea this thread existed. The first election I was eligible to vote in....I voted for George McGovern. So I have pretty much seen it all in politics. 

What I have seen the last few elections is Democratic Leadership doing a terrible job of communicating to both the country and their voters. They appear in front of the microphones with sad/dour faces, wringing their hands and trying to be the Adults in the Room. No passion, no fight. The worst thing we have fallen for is "When they go low, we go high" nonsense.  You don't have to go low - you have to fight back, hard.  We so need new voices but I am afraid we aren't going to get them anytime soon. 

I will never forgive Pelosi/other leaders for not privately going to The White House a couple of years earlier and telling Biden that he must not run again, that he would not get their support. When things get tough...put your country ahead of your ambitions.

Dems, Independents, young and minority voters need to know Leadership will not be afraid to stand up, vigorously, for them. Considering what happened with AOC....I am afraid we could lose a generation of voters.

It will be interesting to see what Trump does.  He doesn't need his supporter's votes anymore but he needs their adoration if he plans on continuing his rallies.  It's like they are his fix.  But clearly there is something between him and Musk.

I think more people voted for Trump hoping he would do the good things he said he would do (lowering grocery prices, coming up with a better and cheaper alternative to the ACA) than the people hoping he would do the bad things he said he would do (mass deportations, continuing to alienate our allies).  So most likely he doesn't do any good things and not enough bad things to make his voters happy so Republicans will probably pay the price in 2026.  And Trump won't care.  I think he is going to use his term to enrich himself even more than he did the first time around.  I think if his agenda gets held up he loses interest.  Which would probably be a blessing.

I was at first expecting to vehemently oppose this. As I read on, you made good points. I wanted to fight, and use the lows the trumpers were using. I have heard some of the stupidest things out of their mouths.

And stay out of prison. Here I think he played himself a bit. He's only going to be in a different kind of prison. He still won't have much say over how he spends his days, he'll be scrutinized constantly and he'll be pilloried daily by an increasingly unfriendly press.

I remember when Michelle Obama started this slogan (& the reaction I got from fellow Dems when I cursed the inanity of it). A lot of people don't like Rahm Emanuel, but he knows how to deal with Republicans & it's not with mealy-mouthed slogans & letting them walk all over our candidates. Whenever I mention that the GOP was the party against Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Voting Rights Act, etc., there's always someone who expresses surprise. The Democrats just aren't good at messaging. I still love Nancy and appreciate her for being the only one who could get Biden to *finally* step aside. Maybe Clyburn should've done this at the end of 2023 so we could've had primaries (& maybe KH would've seen the writing on the proverbial wall).

Because the last two Republican Presidents have been problematic to put it mildly. But the Republican party turned a blind eye because they wanted to win.  And Democrats?  I'm sure they figure they will have problematic President at some point and they will want to protect them.

And if our founding fathers had their way it will still be only white men doing the voting.

You know I love how George Soros is always used as an example of a rich guy using his money and influence to control Democrats without any evidence meanwhile we have a parade of rich guys publicly kneeling in front of Trump and nobody says a word.  Except for us of course.

Ultimately I blame Biden for not realizing he was staying too late at the party.  And I think it does hurt his legacy.  I think there was a least little bit of a hero complex going on with him thinking only he could save us from Trump again.

I agree. I like her but I think she would lose because of Republican messaging. No fault of her own, but the Republicans have the Democrats beat 20 times over when it comes to propaganda and a ground game now. In a few decades maybe that will change, especially if another candidate brings the energy back to the left, but incorporating fresher faces who are willing to actively engage in revitalizing hope within the electoral process would be a nice start. As someone pointed out, they need to stop placating Republican voters that hate them and and instead focus on those who are seeking a better alternative (i.e. literally everyone else without an R next to their name).

Same here. Nothing like waking up to a spike in your blood pressure! I wasn't even up 5 minutes this morning when I heard that he's vowed to end Daylight Saving Time. I know that Congress passed putting us all on permanent DST, which I like, but knowing him he'll deliberately go the other way and push for permanent Standard Time which will mean by the 2nd week of March here in New England we won't have bright daylight until after 8:00 a.m. Then on the longest day of the year in June we will observe daylight before 4:00 in the morning and it will get dark before 8:00 p.m. Which sucks. I doubt he'll get anywhere with that, though, given that the president isn't in control of those things but in this situation you never know. All those Republican reps. that voted for permanent DST might go the other way just to please him. I get sick just thinking about it.

I know we've made a lot of fun about Trump's campaign vow to lower the price of eggs here, but he has backpedaled on that since getting elected and now with yet another outbreak of avian flu, egg prices at my local supermarkets are above $6.00 a dozen - more like $6.25 - $13.00 depending on the brand and variety it looks even more doubtful that he's going to have any effect on that at all. In fact, some of the policies he thinks are going to help lower prices are only going to make egg prices, and all grocery prices go up even more. I was looking at grocery receipts I saved from 2020 when eggs were $2.00 a dozen and wondering when and how this is all going to end. We can't keep having egg prices go up every year because of bird flu. At some point people are going to stop buying them. I've heard that demand is down and it will probably continue to decline. Too bad the little Walmart near me doesn't carry eggs - 1 dozen large eggs at Walmart are now about $4.00. Our next door neighbor has a chicken coop and brings us eggs every once in a while so at least we have that. We give them egg cartons so it's a win-win.

They had a bad relationship with women in their lives early on, whether it be their moms or teachers.  My son's kindergarten teacher was only nice to the girls and treated all the boys poorly (she's no longer teaching at the school).  This could have a bad impact on the boys later in life even if they have a good relationship with their moms.
