Children are killed in school and they shrug their shoulders. I mean what can you do.  A rich corporate CEO is killed and OMG the horror.  They need bodyguards now. We can't ever know their location. They  must be protected.

Yep they should get what they deserve but unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

And the sad and maddening thing is if Kamala had won her polices would have benefitted us and the people who didn't vote for her.  She wasn't planning on fucking over her "enemies".  She wasn't going to threaten everyone to fall in line or else.

They will never own it. They will blame someone else.  Probably Kamala for not giving them what they wanted.

I remember always hearing JFK had the best and brightest working for him.  Trump has the dumbest and meanest.

A kakistocracy (/kækɪˈstɒkrəsi/, /kækɪsˈtɒ-/) is a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens. The word was coined as early as the seventeenth century.

Australian lexicographer Peter Bowler has noted that there is no word for the opposite, a government run by the best citizens, but that aristarchy may be the correct term for that. Still, it conceivably could be a kakistocracy disguised as an aristocracy.

That’s basically the whole world right now.  What an awful time to live.

Children are getting shot in their schools, and CEOs are getting a special hotline to call, to report any perceived threats, in New York State. A second grader called the police, to report that school shooting, yesterday.

That's been corrected - it was a second grade teacher, not a second grade student.  The call log was misread.  Still horrific.

I know someone who has a family member who works construction jobs.  A few years ago they were working on renovations to the executive offices in a large health care corporate office.  They were putting bullet resistant panels in the walls.  I'm not sure who they feared more, their employees or members of the public.

Before long there will be hotlines set up for people to report suspicious looking persons in their communities that they are positive are in the US illegally.  What could go wrong?  But the Republicans/MAGA crowd won't mind anyone being illegally detained, wrongfully deported, killed by a vigilante, right?  They don't give a damn about women bleeding to death from miscarriages, why should they care about anyone else?  All those so eager to call 1-800-GESTAPO to report someone at Costco who was speaking a language other than English ought to look at Rudy Giuliani.  You just might be targeting the wrong person and get sued for everything you own.

I just heard a left leaning political pundit say the SCOTUS authorized presidential immunity applies to Democrat presidents as well.  And she was being serious.

Does anyone actually believe that?

The fact they know what they are doing is wrong and has people hating them just shows how indifferent they are to the suffering they cause.

She's technically correct here. SCOTUS did not qualify that ruling by saying it only applied to Donald Trump. So, it is possible that if Joe Biden did commit an actual crime (or some made up crime that Trump's people decide to charge him with) while serving as president, then he could get the charges thrown out. SCOTUS does not normally go back and say we we're wrong when we ruled on this case especially if it's the same justices that ruled on the first case. As long as John Roberts is Chief Justice, he is not going to change his mind on one of his rulings. As long as the 6 justices who ruled in favor of presidential immunity are on the court, they are not going to overturn this.

The cold blooded calculated murder of the CEO of UHC is as nauseating and grievous to me as the constant school killings.
The governor of NY is so ignorant that she would think it fit to protect a handful of CEOs and what? Ignore what happens on the streets to everyday citizens?

I’m not happy that he was shot.  I hate that it took that, to get the conversation going about the trash healthcare in this country (with it being a business, most of all), and to unite a lot of people on all sides, for about a week. I just don’t think that CEOs should be a protected species, and the rest of us can go fuck ourselves.

I'm not happy the CEO was shot. I'm sure his family is grieving but what pisses me off is that the Republicans won't even discuss having fewer weapons of death. Schoolchildren are mowed down in their classrooms, they have metal detectors and armed shooter drills. There are literally no other civilized countries in the world where this happens. Guns outnumber human souls in  this country by a staggering degree. It isn't right and it will not be sustainable.

So is everyone else who gets killed in this country.  He wasn’t better than any of them. And all of the women getting killed by their boyfriends or husbands, or a guy who gets rejected.  The republicans don’t give a crap about them.
I also said that I wasn’t happy he was dead.  I’m not celebrating.

The assassin was not covered by UHC. He may have had a back surgery issue that was or was not covered by his health insurance but maybe he is self insured.

Unfortunately not all surgeries and procedures are covered by insurance. My husband and I have experienced this but we’re very fortunate not to be at the will of the insurance companies.

The assassin is reportedly from a family of means and is being represented by a high profile NY attorney. Maybe his parents paid all his medical expenses.

He had apparently not been in touch with his family for about six months, and he seemed to be taking a stand for everyone, although not everyone would have chosen this way to do it.

I know he's from a rich family.

I'm likely neurodivergent, too. I'm undiagnosed, because it didn't occur to anyone that girls and women could be ADHD or autistic. I don't know if there's any point in getting diagnosed now.

You weren't the only person to say something. I was just making it clear that I haven't celebrated this man's death. I'm just sickened and also unsurprised that a rich man's life would take precedence for people in power.

Right.  I remember reading an article about an influx of female diagnoses in the adult years because symptoms don't manifest in the same way  with girls as boys and the boy symptoms are the standard for textbook diagnosis (because of course it is).  And while "luminaries" like Abby Schreier and Jonathan Haight want to say we're being over diagnosed and blame everything on tech and "gentle parenting", people (mostly women) still go undiagnosed because of outdated criteria on what the spectrum is and where one lands.

I wish my insurance covered it because I am most definitely undiagnosed but can't find out right now. Not to mention most mental health experts in my area are booked solid months out.

On that note, that's the main thing that I keep thinking about in regards to this story. People are treating him as a hero, and believe you me, I can VERY much sympathize with the general sense of anger people have towards this CEO and the healthcare system in general. I told my story about my own family's experiences a few pages back, believe me when I say I get it

But I do wonder if this guy would be as celebrated if he came from some lower-class/working class background, or didn't have his good looks* (or if people would ever even consider a lower-class/working class person attractive in the first place, but that's a whole other topic). As noted, he's from a rich family, so even if he's not close with them, his wealthier background might help benefit him when it comes to the kind of punishment he receives. I can't say that'd be the case if he were dirt poor.

*Speaking for myself, setting aside everything else about him and his crimes, his looks do nothing for me, but still, it's clearly a big part of his appeal for many.

One would think/hope so - I've said before that if I were Biden, I'd just be spending these last couple months like, "Okay, you guys want to play that game? Fine." and go all out doing whatever the fuck he wants while he's still president. Let him get the opportunity to test just how far this "presidential immunity" thing goes.

I know that legally yes Biden should be afforded the same immunity Trump would and has used but I don't believe he would ever be allowed to do that.  Do we honestly believe this Supreme Court would have ruled in favor of President Obama if he had argued for such extensive Presidential immunity.  This is the most partisan Court I've ever seen in my lifetime.

His looks do nothing for me, either, and I was an adult when he was born. I do think that it's because so many people have had bad experiences, and/or lost loved ones. I have a friend who doesn't care that he's dead, after her mother had to fight to get treatment covered, for what is now terminal cancer. I might link to her comment about it, on threads, because her account doesn't dox her.

I've just found the post, and it was fighting for testing, as well as treatment. There was a lot of waiting, and appeals, so she feels like she understands his motivation. Because her mum is now terminal. The post she responded to, was deleted, this is in her replies. She doesn't think he's hot.

Oh, absolutely. Like I said, I've got my own family horror stories with our oh-so-wonderful healthcare system, so yeah, I can totally sympathize with the anger and desire for justice.

I'm so sorry about your friend's mom. That's awful. It's absolutely maddening that this is how our system is here in this country of supposed wealth and freedom and we've all just been conditioned that this is how it is and we just have to deal with it. I saw an aritcle recently where Marjorie Taylor Greene apparently fears that the murder of this CEO will make Americans even more supportive of socialized medicine.Yeah, honey, I've got news for you, some of us have been feeling that way for a long, LONG time now.

Don’t get me started on health care in America. 2020 was a crap show for my family. I had an ACA plan that was reasonable for my family to pay monthly. I.e  had a high deductible. We weren’t sick often, didn’t need drs often. In that year my daughter broker her arm twice. She needed four surgeries by the time 2022 arrived. It was a years long process. Our bill was over $40,000. Meanwhile my 10 year old was diagnosed with a heart condition requiring 2 surgeries at over $100,000 a piece. Over that two year period we owed over $50,000.
My husband and I both work jobs without benefits but the kids are eligible for Medicaid. My son will need many more surgeries so I’m in this precarious position of getting a better job and paying out of pocket for medical or keep working my lower paying job that allows me to be present for my kids and they are eligible for Medicaid.

Yeah, it's pretty grotesque how the only way you can get any kind of assistance is if you are pretty much forced to stay in a low-paying job and can't aim TOO high for any better paying job opportunities, lest you lose that assistance and wind up having to foot the bill yourself, and that bill's already pretty fucking high as it is.

And yet people have the nerve to say that people who are poor are just lazy and don't want to work or just need to find better paying jobs. Fuck off.

(It's not healthcare, but it's amazing how much assistance my mom has been denied because she "makes too much money to qualify". Y'know, on her paltry Social Security benefits she gets once a month, while living in a tiny apartment on the top floor of someone else's home with me. Clearly we are living the high life here, mmhm.)

This is a timely discussion for me as Ned Lamont, the governor of my state (CT) just announced the wiping out of crushing medical debt for 23,000 CT residents to the tune of $30 million. So far it applies to people that make less per year than the national poverty level (which is pretty low at 31,000 - I personally think that figure should be raised) or who are above that but have really massive debt they could never pay off. The people chosen for this can't apply, they have to be invited. This is only phase one - a phase two is in the works. Hopefully it will be expanded to include more people above the poverty line in that phase. I really like Ned Lamont and I have not said that about too many of CT's governors since I moved here 33 years ago.

https://portal.ct.gov/governor/news/press-releases/2024/12-2024/governor-lamont-announces-nearly-23k-residents-will-have-30-million-in-medical-debt-erased?language=en_US

As I said before for everyone telling people just quit your job that provides no insurance and get a job that does (because those jobs are always available) who is going to do the jobs that have no insurance?  Pre ACA having insurance tied to employment did and still does hamper people from leaving a job they hate and/or leaving for a better job albeit one either without insurance or insurance that isn't as good.  It also prevented people from being able to be self employed. And there are lots of employers who provide really shitty insurance. Crazy expensive and covers the bare minimum.  Back in the late 90s I worked for a company that did "provide" insurance.  Only they didn't contribute anything.  They simply withdrew it from your paycheck and paid the insurance company.  It was optional so you didn't have to buy it.  And only one coworker did.  She was married and her husband had insurance so I think this was like a supplemental for her. My young son was getting Medicaid at the time and the state threatened to take it away because they said I was refusing employer provided health insurance. I had to argue with them that technically it wasn't employer provided because they weren't paying any part of it.  They eventually backed down.

The only reason this country doesn't have single payer or Medicare for all or whatever you want to call it is greed.  The insurance companies and the politicians bought by them.  We are not a civilized society when people are allowed to die from things that could be prevented or treated so others can get rich.

Here in Canada it's certainly not perfect in our health system and there are always going to be people who fall through the cracks or who work up debt related to health issues but, and it's a big but, these are the exceptions not the rule.  People here who complain about out health care are clearly not paying attention to what happens to people every single day across the border 😔.

This morning he’s continuing to spread the lie that he won the election by the biggest mandate in 129 years

In fact he barely won by just over 1%. His margin of victory in the popular vote was one of the smallest in US history

Oh yeah he still had enough time to say he’s naming Herschel Walker as ambassador to the Bahamas. 🤣

Do these people have to be confirmed by the senate or just kiss Trump’s ass?

I don't think ambassadors need to be confirmed like his cabinet picks. Ambassadors do not have the same level of security clearance. And depending on the country, being an ambassador is more of a social position than a political one.

I do think that Trump is running his mouth about all of these inconsequential things because it takes away attention that could be paid to his picks for more consequential positions. The media is covering Trump running his mouth about Canada and no longer delving into Pete Hegseth's past or talking about the security risk that is Tulsi Gabbard. Now Americans are not going to be contacting their congressional representatives to complain about Pete or Tulsi or Linda McMahon or any of the other vastly unqualified cabinet picks.

Some countries have said they will not share intelligence with us because of her.

And that begs the question why does he double down on nominees that are so unqualified/dangerous/embarrassing? With Gabbard I think it's because she is friendlier with people that are adversaries more than our allies.  He likes Putin so of course he wants someone else who does too. With RFK Jr. is it simply that he is returning a favor after he endorsed him? Because I doubt Trump is a fan of raw milk.

Trump will always endorse those who endorse him, but as soon as you stop massaging his ego or publicly disagree he will cut you. Both Tulsi and RFK, Jr. sucked up to him and are now getting rewarded. Also, the idea that parents should be the final arbiter when it comes to their children and things like vaccines is something RFK, Jr. shares with the other people propping up Trump. The crunchy to alt-right pipeline begins with vaccines (raw milk can also be a part of this).

Then, in a party-line vote last month, Republicans blocked the report’s release. The reversal reported Wednesday means some Republicans on the panel defected from party lines, siding with the Democrats in voting to let the report see the light of day.

I see an option to “empty” and also check boxes by each message to select for deletion.

Sorry , tried to post a screenshot but couldn’t delete the one I accidentally pasted in with too much identifying info. Basically click the envelope icon , go to inbox, and you should see options to delete some or all.
