I'm confused by some stuff.  Well, a lot actually.

There were 2 women in a locker room in one scene.  One of them was in the squad though I honestly don't know which.  Who was the other?  Who was interested in Gibbs?

So Sandman was Bug guy?  Or his cousin?  Because Bug guy looked way to out of it and shaky to be able to use a sniper rifle.  And I thought his cousin was the sniper-in-training who washed out maybe, didn't understand that totally either?

I couldn't tell what was going on half the time in this show.  Why was Franks getting into the tub with a woman who was crying?  Was that suppose to be his wife?

I agree with Grizzly, who was the woman at the end and do we know her yet?  Or is the info she gave Franks just a set-up for some underlying, season-long mystery?

And why did modern day Gibbs want to tell this particular story because it was somehow important to him?  He seemed upset about something in the story it seemed.

I think I like the 2 lead actors so far -- especially the guy playing Franks -- but the music is too loud and out of control and half the scenes are so in the dark it's hard to see what was happening.

Is the Criminal Minds cinematography and lighting crew on this show too?

I think they know the Sandman is someone else. Or at least Gibbs thinks so.

The woman in the locker room and at the end was Strickland. Not sure where she fits in.

Yeah this is probably going to be a hard pass for me.   Not a big fan of prequels.  I didn’t like Young Sheldon and I really don’t like this.  Gibbs has always been a problematic character to begin with and setting a series so soon after his wife and kid’s death is going to just highlight how problematic but also praise his worst traits.     I did however like the idea that he failed his psyche but because of the time period and other factors it was swept under the rug.

Thanks.  But who is Strickland?  For that matter what is the name of the woman in the squad with Gibbs?  And the young man as well?

So Gibbs is disturbed and telling the story because he thinks they got the wrong guy back then?  Because he didn't have a loud enough gut back in the day?  Okay.

I appreciate the help.  I'll watch again next week but I think I may need help every episode.  LOL.

Still I decided to watch NCIS tonight for the first time in a couple of years and nope, out again on that show.  Handing out crappy donuts is STILL a thing?  Really?  Enough with Mary Poppins and the spoonful of sugar.  I'll take moody Gibbs any day over the current NCIS show which appears to be re-doing the corrupt high official in an endless season arc stuff yet again.

Credit to TV Echo who posted this in the Anticipation thread.  I just copied it over here cause I believe it belongs here since it is about the 2 hour premiere episode and anticipation thread to me means before a show even has been broadcast so I almost didn't see it:

https://tvline.com/interviews/ncis-origins-gibbs-untold-story-about-her-lala-dominguez-1235349623/

I had forgotten that quote that this was suppose to be "her story" until reminded of that quote in the article.  And at the time I had no idea who "her" was since there were two hers in a locker room and I couldn't tell which was which as well as one sitting in a tub crying.

Was the crying in the tub woman one of the locker room women?  She seemed to be "with" Franks (wife? girl friend?).  Anyway all three women were kind of short with long, dark black hair. Hard to tell cause most of the scenes were so dark it was hard to make out any more details to well.

It was like most of the enlisted men in "Band of Brothers" all over again for me as I couldn't easily sort them out on the go first time I watched that really great miniseries despite them actually having name tags on their uniforms.  My first viewing I just had in my head that the enlisted men = one really tall giant blonde soldier and a bunch of smaller, dark haired guys with kind of east coast accents.  But they were based on real men so the producers were kind of stuck with it I guess.

This show had the option of making the three women look a bit different.  Maybe one at least with curly or shorter hair?   Somewhat taller than the other two?  Give me something.  I'm not Sherlock Holmes who can see subtle stuff especially on a show that seemed to have half the scenes shot with the lens cap still on the camera it was so dark.

But the article gave me who the "her" was finally and what her name was.  And which one she was.  The squad one.  But "Lala" ... really?  At least if they made her "Layla" we would have gotten a great Clapton guitar riff every time she appeared.

Anyway I hope the whole season isn't about "her story" and this turns into some kind of soap opera.  Especially since she seemed like one of the weaker characters.

I'll keep watching for now and hope they can afford some lighting for the show soon and this story arc doesn't last too long until we get into some good NCIS (still NIS) stuff.  Or at least more of Franks' backstory since he was such a major figure in the franchise.

I’m confused about Gibbs’ father showing up. Wasn’t it established in the mothership that they hadn’t spoken since Kelly and Shannon’s funeral because Jack showed up with a neighbor who he’d been seeing since before Jethro’s mother died?

I’m quasi intrigued by some of what I’ve seen so far, just not sure it’s enough to keep me going for a whole season.

Did they even play the Metallica song?

Not that I heard.  They did play, in a scene where Gibbs was driving, Kickstart my heart by Motley Crue.  Which made me wonder, was he listening to Pure Rock 105.5 KNAC? (that was a hard rock/heavy metal station in the L. A. market from 1986 to 1995).  Maybe not, as they didn't have a strong signal (they were based in Long Beach.  I used to lose them if I drove to the San Fernando Valley, the Hollywood Hills or whatever range that was blocked the signal, so I doubt the signal made it down to northern San Diego county (or maybe it did, ironically in April 1991, I drove a day trip down to San Diego, but I don't remember if I listened to KNAC or not))

Yep, I thought the same thing. First episode(s) and they've already broken canon.

One thing I was glad to see were lots of people in the forensic lab. I adore Abby, but, after spending my career working in federal forensic labs, there was a lot of disbelief to suspend to allow for Abby the master of everything.

Dang, I was hoping she would get Vivian Blackadder-ed because she's obnoxious!  I like Gibbs, Randy, and Mary Jo.  So far, everybody else sucks.

Well JAG/NCIS was never any good at protecting its canon.

I didn't, the early 90s were not the dark ages. How a local office is allowed to bring in an agent who failed a psyche evaluation seemed wrong in all accounts.

The setup of the FBI escorting NIS off of the beach reminded me of a similar scene in the miniseries on the 1996 Olympics bombing. In that case the ATF were the bombers of hunters. I know there are around 40 NCIS TV seasons  but they had not made the case that they know anything about such an investigation for this prior to Air Force One murder first episode. They were just lucky that a trained scout sniper was just added to the team.

Gibbs must have picked up the eavesdropping technique (overhear information by standing behind people) from Randy. 👀

The mysterious case that Frank and Vera are working on must have connections to the murder of Shannon and Kelly.

Mike Franks is never my favorite character. It’s easy to ignore him.

After 2 episodes, I like probie Gibbs, a bit stiff at times. Randy is friendly and a team player. The tech guy and the ME seem OK. Still have no opinion about Vera and Mary Jo.

Lala Dominguez is a bit of miss know-it-all. She undermines Mike when she tells Gibbs that he failed his psych evaluation. The nerves.

Quote

“This is a story of her.”

Since Lala is an important part of Gibbs' story, I hope this character will become more likeable over time.

Nice reflection!

Also if we big handwave away Gibbs failing his psych test but Franks gets him onboard anyway ... then what was Franks' motive?

Prior to the premiere, I read some articles and early reviews of this show to familiarize myself with the characters.

Makes you think a 70 year old falsely convicted drug addict will get released on NCIS somewhere down the line in a generational crossover.

I think it was the only way to get Gibb's father into the narrative, so they decided to wave what was previously established.

There was a line in Heartland, that mentioned they hadn't talked since he started at NIS, so this i just a small glossover

Staying (so far) for Mike Franks. Him getting into the tub fully dressed just because his girl was crying (I’m assuming he knows why even if the viewers don’t) made my romantic heart go pitty-pat. Might be the sexiest and most romantic thing I’ve ever seen on tv.

So far,  like mostly everyone. Lala is the exception. Just didn’t warm to her. And Bobby Moynihan as the head forensics guy was an unexpected choice.  I’ve liked him in other comedic stuff but I didn’t expect him on a serious police procedural.

It wasn’t exactly a friendly, congenial visit. They both just criticized, so I can see why it wouldn’t count as “seeing” each other.

Then why isn't it Lia or CeCe?  LaLa is music notes not a name.  It's stupid.

A lot of people pick up their nickname  from a baby in their home first words.

I like this. I never watched the mothership, so I just think it’s fun to see investigations in the low tech age.

I have been watching cop shows for so long the only thing looking lower tech are the pay phones and the dark room.

Well they don’t have the designated hacker who immediately finds any info needed.

In fact they are afraid to turn on the computer.

Heck, this whole premise has sort of broken canon. Gibbs is a lot younger here than when he originally joined NIS/NCIS. And Muse Watson's Franks was a LOT older when he investigated the murders of Shannon and Kelly. You'd think Mark Harmon would remember that! And this just isn't good.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, even the original broke canon with the backdoor pilot on JAG in 2003, where Gibbs testified he'd only been an agent for 12 years or so, with the actual show- it turned into 19 when the show premiered.

We also have Sean Harmon, who played a young Gibbs in the original show's flashbacks, as a producer along with his dad. The actor playing Gibbs is just thisclose to a block of wood, and doesn't have the charisma or looks of Mark Hamon. But who does?

But at least I got my one fix of Harmon in the premiere.

And the tightass Wheeler also appeared in the original in season five as the murderer/con man for some land that belonged to the victim who had been murdered in Iraq. But I know him more as Pepe from Nash Bridges.

So why did I tune in? I was bored and couldn't sleep so caught this on Paramount late last night.

I agree the Gibbs actor looks a bit weird and hasn't shown any real acting chops yet.  He also looks so much taller than Mark Harmon.  He literally towers over the rest of the cast which looks really odd and bothers me for some reason.

Yeah Franks is younger but I like the actor who is playing him so that is fine.  He is the one that holds focus the most in the cast so far.

That's one of the things I really enjoyed about watching the original Hawaii 5-O. Not just having to do all the investigating by low tech but being able to go to the airport and walk straight to your gate with your gun in your carry-on, and other things that have been long forgotten in the world.

Yup.  Yesterday I watched a 1981 movie (They All Laughed), where the actors ran into the courthouse at 60 Centre Street (you know, the Law and Order courthouse) with no security check!

I agree that the Gibbs actor is a bit wooden, but the Franks actor is fantastic.  But the Gibbs character is working through trauma.

A bit? I have an Axe that can cut right through! Yes, Schmid is fantastic, but I have to go back to the original-where Franks was always in a suit, and even a flashback when Gibbs first joined in the season three two part finale, "Hiatus", we met Franks for the first time and we had Harmon's Gibbs show up on his first day in a SUIT. None of this casual wear we're seeing in this origins show.

Gibbs wasn't a total stoic person-he had a family he loved, so there should be emotion there-and yes, he's still grieving, but this Stowell actor is doing a piss-poor job of conveying that. While Sean Harmon is not like his dad in looks (I think his nephew Sam Nelson (son of his sister and the late Ricky Nelson) looks more like his kid than Sean)), he at least was able to emote and have some range.

Yeah, I'm an anal retentive wench.

He is listed as 1 inch taller. But then Mark Harmon may have shrunk from his peak 6 foot height as UCLA's quarterback by his last seasons

Or the other cast members in this current show are pretty short.
