Why is there music playing when none of the mens’ rotations use music? Just to keep the energy up?

Actually, the Russians, master of choreography, have lobbied for the men's routines to be set to music, but the Chinese and Japanese resisted.  I think they use music now because we all have short attention spans!

To be clear, while Skinner was an Olympian in 2020 and did earn the silver medal in vault, she did NOT make the team. She was given the individual spot the US earned in the AA World Cup series for those games.

So her ridiculous comments are extra ridiculous because she NEVER made a US Olympic team in gymnastics.

We stan our petty queen, Simone! 👑

No that was Jade Carey. Skinner went in the "specialist" spot which they only had for that quad.

Skinner has been an idiot for a long, long time.  She was an alternate on the 2016 Olympic team and had the nerve to paste her photo over Gabby Douglas' face in the team photo and tweet it.

She supposedly has a degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Utah but clearly didn't learn anything.

During this Olympic cycle, she has also given multiple interviews where she mispronounced Hezley Rivera's name despite being repeatedly given the proper pronunciation.  Her fellow gymnasts had already spoken about about that well prior to the Games.

Jade had a NOMINATIVE spot (i.e. she earned it for herself alone through the apparatus World Cup process). The US earned an individual AA spot through the All-Around World Cup process to which they could name an additional gymnast beyond the four-member team, and that spot went to Skinner. Regardless, though she competed under the US flag, she was NOT part of the US Team in Tokyo.

Both Jade and MyKayla were specialists--we had two in Tokyo. Which is why we had only three left over (Suni, Jade and Grace) to compete after Simone dropped out.

Exactly. The FIG used this process exactly once - realized it was convoluted and didn't boost the World Cups the way they wanted and abandoned it just as quickly. 😂

I loved that there was some drama for the podium in the men's AA final!

Paul Juda was stellar - he doesn't have the difficulty to contend for a medal, but he was rolling all morning!

Sad that Fred Richard fell on his first event, but I'll always love his high bar and floor.

Was also rooting for Jesse Moore - doesn't have the difficulty, but he didn't finish last, which is excellent!

Did anyone catch Karimi's pommel horse? I was watching a different box, but he got like a 8 or 9 score? Is his difficulty that low or did he fall like 4 times?

Here's some interesting info from Shawn Johnson on the differences between European and US gymnastics' equipment. It also makes me wonder where Asian equipment falls on this continuum, my assumption being that they would use equipment manufactured in Asia.

I don’t know how that’s not dangerous? You would think equipment would have to be standard.

Skinner thought her and Simone would be besties and she would be the breakout star of the Olympics. In reality, no one cared. She failed upward to get that Silver. She’s lucky Jade tripped (which was talked about more than her).

She and Simone at one point really were besties. Simone was screaming her head off for Skinner at the Olympics in the vault finals. You could hear Simone screaming the whole time.

Which makes what MyKayla said so much shittier. Simone was nothing but loving and supportive for Skinner.

Yeah, they were both on the team for Worlds in 2015 and after the 2016 Games, whenever they were on a team, they were usually the two oldest and bonded.

As @Conotocarious posted, Skinner is a complete idiot.  She's an extremely sheltered, incurious Mormon who embodies the worst stereotypes people have of Mormons and then some.  A well-deserved smackdown.

As far as the men's all-around, I actually had my eye on Oka as the gold medalist after qualifying.  I don't know why, it was just a feeling.  He just had an aura about him that seemed to be the right combination of hungry and composed.

I mean, I expected Zhang to win IF he could avoid the yips that seem to be affecting all the Chinese gymnasts because his difficulty across all the apparatuses was so high...but he yipped.  It's a testament to how great he is that he damn near won gold even with that big fuck-up on floor.  I know he must be incredibly disappointed not to win gold, but that was a great comeback for silver.

Really, though, Oka's consistency earned him that gold.  He was wonderful across all six apparatuses, and I was rooting for him.  He just had It.

Xiao did amazingly as well and really was incredibly consistent; he just didn't have the overall difficulty of Zhang or the form of Oka.

I really wanted Illia Kovtun to medal.  He's such a beautiful, powerful gymnast, and it would've been so great for Ukraine.  However, it was going to be too high a mountain to climb with his rings routine.  He'd have needed big mistakes from Xiao, Hashimoto, and Oka and a few big mistakes from Zhang for to get a medal.  Hashimoto (who really was just off tonight) complied, but the other three didn't.

NBC's primetime broadcast opened by hyping Richard and Juda as potential medalists, and just...like, I get why NBC did that because rah-rah-USA-rah, but neither of them ever had any chance of medaling.  It was ridiculous, and of course the primetime broadcast showed maybe seven total routines in the competition since both Americans fucked up five seconds into their first routines and were immediately out of contention.

Really, though, the most important thing is that that racist, homophobic asshole fucked around and found out.🔥

I absolutely agree with you about Skinner.   Not very smart to try to dis the GOAT of your sport, especially one who is well liked.

I've found that the E! and USA coverage is far superior to the chopped up mess the NBC primetime runs.   Some of NBC's daytime coverage is decent.  However, anything that runs on E! in the morning, and reruns on USA later is so much better than the NBC primetime stuff.

Women's individual all around is running on NBC today 11:15 to 1:30 pm central time.

She probably thought she was safe because she specifically excluded Simone from the statement. I’m not surprised she thought she could get away with it since she has been saying and doing offensive shit for years and it never stuck.

She’s too stupid to realize Simone is a loyal friend and that Simone’s parents own the gym where many of the top competitors train, including Jordan and Joscelyn (Olympic alternate for the team).

Wow. Gorgeous vault from Rebecca. Love the yellow too.

I have been living for the Brazilian leos.  Gooooooorgeous.

Excellent vault by Rebeca, and I was hoping Simone would risk the Yurchenko double pike (it's the AA: go big or go home) and am thrilled she landed it!

I have to be at work by 11:00am today (I'm in LA), so I will probably only have time to watch the first two rotations live (maybe three if they're moving things along).  I...have feelings about this.

I was looking at the numbers posted by Simone and Rebecca during the Team Final. I don’t think Simone can play it safe to win. She had to hit that crazy difficult vault.

She really can’t. Andrade is a true all arounder. Simone is going to have to be very careful with the tenths that come with those hops. Outside of vault, their D scores are not that far a part.
