I don't know if that's what the public wants or if it's what production thinks the public wants, but this country really would benefit more from people knowing how to cook tasty and healthy food, not people showing how much flair they've got... I used to watch a show years ago where the host was all about fixing simple everyday meals that were healthy. 3 Link to comment

That food was just too tasty and she isn’t looking forward to never eating it again (until she “makes a mistake” that is). She'll probably "slip up a few times" or "give myself a cheat day here and there" or "give in to the cravings". But she will also "work as hard as I can work". Its a conundrum. 3 1 3 Link to comment
Hellga April 11 Share April 11 Just now, Pepper Mostly said: She has to load up on fried chicken and biscuits and pancakes and ice cream an soda and pizza and tacos and lots of stuff smothered in cheese and/or ranch before she goes to Dr. Now and can never eat anything "good" again. I absolutely hate that attitude. It's counterproductive and really any pleasure of flavor is only good for about the first five bites. That's science. So if you really want something, don't stuff your face, just have a few bites, chew slowly and carefully, and move on to something else. You will get all the pleasure of taste for a fraction of the calories. 4 1 1 Link to comment

Normally I'm a little hardhearted about patients who've eaten themselves into these problems, but she's had a lot of real trauma - not 'mom loved him best' stuff. She needs a wheelchair or walker. Whew. I feel the same. IMO she's really suffering and not ramping up the drama about it. I'm really pulling for her and I feel so sorry for her suffering as I'm watching her on that road trip. 3 Link to comment

True but it requires people proactively looking. The people who proactively look to learn to cook healthy meals are usually not the people who have significant weight problems or food addictions to begin with. People like the ones we see on this show need multiple points of forced reinforcement before it even begins to click for a majority of them. 3 2 Link to comment

Pepper Mostly April 11 Share April 11 EXTRA TOAST! During lockdown I was eating slabs of toast every day. I put on 20 pounds. Pounds I could ill afford to gain, too. I was already plenty fat. Though I suppose it was a blessing in disguise, since my annual visit to my PCP was a wake up call and I've lost over 90 pounds since then. 2 13 2 Link to comment

I think the subscription to NYTimes Cooking is well worth the $ if you cook often. The search feature is excellent (for example, if I want a fast vegetarian meal for 2--super easy to narrow the search). After you get results, sorting by the star ratings is a dependable way to get a great recipe. I love it! Some favorite healthy recipes: Turmeric-Black Pepper Chicken With Asparagus and Spiced Chickpea Stew With Coconut and Turmeric. I guess I like turmeric!?! 1 1 Link to comment
Pi237 April 11 Share April 11 (edited) Recipes online are a barrage of pop ups and 6 paragraphs of blah blah blah. I’d love some cooking light type shows that use normal ingredients and not just chicken, salmon, kale, and legumes. A big container of deep fried brown and tan food stuffs. With dip. And a big burp. I am going to look for this and put it on my list for Things to Make for Mom. And my brother loves chickpeas. Oh my god, that's right, I also made chickpea cakes this week. (Adapted the recipe from the America's Test Kitchen Mediterranean Cookbook. I like them for ideas, but I find their recipes too fiddly and not seasoned enough. So I ramped up the seasoning and streamlined the prep and they came out awesome). 2 Link to comment
