Kathy Bates was honored with Television Showperson of the Year. Bates, currently starring on CBS’ “Matlock” thanked the publicists. She said, “When I first started in this business, I had no idea what that was all about. That’s back to 1990 when we first started talking about, ‘Misery,’ it was quite a shock to sit at a table full of people from all over the world, but having the publicists guide me through that was really so comforting at a scary time.” Bates also

It did. I like the first season where she switched law fields and opened up her law firm that also sold shoes. It was interesting. I liked the other characters too. Then they changed it all in season two. Suddenly it was a "real" law firm with a bunch of new people. What made the show great was gone.

OMG I forgot that shoe thing!

Elsbeth and all of Thursday and Friday night shows on CBS are taking some time off for the rest of the month. It’s all about March Madness. CBS airs the games, and it can’t air two things at once. The games are a big ratings draw, so a network that needs the viewership because, well, it’s business isn’t going to give that up.

Wonder if this means that Jason Ritter is leaving Matlock? Or will he just juggle two shows...

HBO’s Lanterns Casts Matlock’s Jason Ritter as Son to Garret Dillahunt
By Matt Webb Mitovich  March 14, 2025
https://tvline.com/features/lanterns-green-lantern-series-cast-news-release-date-1235326150/

Quote

Jason Ritter, who wrapped production on CBS’ already-renewed Matlock back in October, has lined up a “super” side hustle, on HBO‘s upcoming Green Lantern series.

TVLine can confirm that Ritter has been cast in Lanterns as Billy Macon, “a good-looking charmer who does his father’s bidding,” the official character description tells us. “Capitalizing on his family’s reputation, he clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose.”

Edited by tv echo

The Lanterns role is billed as a recurring role and I've read that it's True Detective style which might mean a different mystery every season even though it looks like the main two guys will remain.

As for filming, Matlock wrapped production back in October and probably won't start filming again until July as that's when many network TV shows start up again.

So I hope he's still around next season.

During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Skye P. Marshall teased her reaction to the season finale, saying, “I am not even exaggerating. When I read the finale script, I was like, ‘Here is take off. Here we go.’ And I mean take off as our characters are fully developed [by the end]. Everyone has their own angle, their own goal and their own ambition — whether it aligns with their original alliance or not.”

“Based on how season 1 ended, I’m pretty sure we’re going to get some amazing guest stars to just continue where this is all going to make it all make sense,” she continued. “With the success of Matlock, we got a lot of people’s attention. I’m really excited to see what other incredible talent wants to come and explore these other characters.”

She concluded: “I’m really excited that the rocket is taking off. I love that. And whatever you think is going to be revealed, the twist is going to have you turned around the same way the pilot ending did.”

Kathy Bates wants Dolly Parton to join Season 2 cast of ‘Matlock’ — and she has the perfect role for the iconic performer
Denton Davidson   March 23, 2025
https://www.goldderby.com/article/2025/kathy-bates-matlock-cast-paleyfest-dream-guest-stars/

Quote

The cast and crew of Matlock were spilling secrets when they reunited for PaleyFest at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on March 23. Lucky fans were treated to an early screening of Episode 16 ("The Johnson Case"), which won't air until April 3 on CBS — and the gobsmacked audience was warned to keep their lips "Mat-locked" about the latest twist.

After the screening, executive producer Eric Christian Olsen hosted a Q&A panel featuring Kathy Bates (Madeline "Matty" Matlock), Skye P. Marshall (Olympia Lawrence), Jason Ritter (Julian Markston), Leah Lewis (Sarah Yang), David Del Rio (Billy Martinez), creator Jennie Snyder Urman, and director Kat Coiro.

Following the juicy discussion not meant for ears beyond the theater walls, talk turned towards Season 2 and potential guest stars. For Bates, there is only one legend she hopes to see strut onto the screen: Dolly Parton as Matty's often-referenced but yet-to-be-seen pal, Cindy Shapiro. Not much is known about Cindy, other than she's an old friend of Matty's and her sister, "Bitsy" (played by Julie Hagerty). She's also the source of some of Matty's memorable quotes like, "When you got money, you can wallow. Without it, you got to swallow."

There was no confirmation if Parton was officially offered the role, but a thunderous applause from the audience certainly confirmed fans would love to see Bates' wish come true. Other wishful names tossed around by the cast for possible guest spots were Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey, their own EP Eric Christian Anderson (NCIS: Los Angeles), and Latin music star Marc Anthony as Billy's father.
*  *  *
Bates said she was offered Matlock on a Friday and told, "You have to read [the script] today and give them an answer by Monday. If you don't, then they're not going to do it." She continued, "I started to read it and I thought, 'It's a procedural...I had done Harry's Law and I didn't know if I wanted to do another show like that. Then I just kept reading it and the end came and I was just like, 'Holy ----!' It has substance, so that's what made me say yes."

The Oscar winner also shared that she partly based the character of Matty on her own mother: "She was one of the invisible ones. She was so smart. She should have been a lawyer — she wanted to be a lawyer. She didn't have the opportunity, she was born in 1907. It's always broken my heart. I know how much she could have contributed. I think about her a lot."

Teasing the rest of Season 1, Snyder Urbman said, "I'm really excited for the last three episodes. They're some of the strongest that we've done. They have drama, suspense, comedy, emotion — and what's satisfying is that we're going to give you the answers you were promised at the beginning of the season — and then it launches us into the second season." She also shared that the April 17 finale is a two-hour episode that "Kat directed so beautifully," and "I can't wait to put it out into the world."

From Deadline Contenders Television event on April 5......

‘Matlock’ Star Kathy Bates Admits She Scrolls Reddit For Fan Reactions – Contenders TV
By Rosy Cordero   April 5, 2025
https://deadline.com/2025/04/matlock-kathy-bates-interview-1236360835/

Quote

Bates was joined by showrunner and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman on Saturday afternoon on a panel to discuss the hot CBS series at Deadline’s Contenders TV event, where she revealed she has read some fan reactions.

“There was a comment on the Reddit board about last week’s episode,” the two-time Emmy winner and 14-time nominee began as the audience gasped that she peeks at the forum site. “I’m not allowed to read Instagram or Reddit because I could see a gazillion wonderful things, then I’ll see one negative thing, and that’s what I’ll pick up on. Although I hear that it’s very human, so it makes me feel better.”

She continued by referencing Snyder Urman, “there was [a comment] that she read about a woman who was on a jury, and last week’s episode had to do with the woman who had been on a jury and who was bullied so much that she ended up caving when the man really was innocent and had been in prison for 21 years. This woman on the Reddit board said it really hit her hard because she had the same experience of being on a jury like that. So as a result of that, when she goes in to be called for jury duty, she explains this, and they don’t take her.”

Both Bates and Snyder Urman celebrated Skye P. Marshall, who plays Olympia Lawrence on the Thursday night series, for her excellent work and what she brings to the project both as a person and an actor.

“I just love her,” said Bates. “We had chemistry read with about four actresses [for the Olympia role], and when she came in, she was just larger than life and gorgeous, and just very open and eager and of course, just brilliantly talented. I wish she were here because she’s had a long road to this magnificent explosion now with Matlock. It’s been so wonderful to see all of that happening for her.”

She added, “But also the power [she brings] in the pilot. She has a big monologue, which has to do with this race-based case, and she calls Maddie on it. When we shot that, I was on the other side of that power coming from her. I just thought: ‘OK, now we’ve got a show. We’ve got two strong women who can duke it out and who can fall in love with each other. That’s what the series, I think, is. The nugget is this rare relationship that we celebrate.”

In addition to sharing her social media habits, Bates revealed she will be directing an episode of Matlock next season, her first time in nearly 22 years, since she directed in the Season 3 episode of HBO’s hit drama Six Feet Under. “I’m very excited,” she shared.

How CBS Scored Kathy Bates for Matlock (Exclusive)
Casting director Michelle Wade Byrd takes us behind the scenes of the hit legal drama.
Phil Pirrello   April 7, 2025
https://www.televisionacademy.com/features/online-originals/matlock-kathy-bates-casting

Quote

So was Kathy Bates attached by the time you came onboard?
The role of Matlock was open when we started. Sometimes, though, shows will come to us with certain talent already attached. Sometimes they come to us with a completely blank slate.
*  *  *
What was the process from then on, exploring who should play the titular role, and how did you land on Bates?
I remember making a list of ladies for Matlock and discussing it with Erin at CBS. She told us [the network] was going to take a swing at Kathy Bates, and that was one of those pipe dreams. If you could have anyone at the top of the call sheet, I mean, that’s who you want. We were super excited that she wanted to do it.
*  *  *
When you have such an accomplished and well-known star onboard like that, how does that shape or influence the casting process? I assume Kathy has a say in who gets cast.
She does. And if someone like Kathy is involved, you obviously want her input. She’s such a veteran in this industry, and it's her show. You want her feedback on who she responds to, who she vibes with. And we did have chemistry reads with Kathy and [actors considered for] the Olympia character, played by Skye P. Marshall, who is fantastic.

We also did chemistry reads with actors for the role of Alfie (Aaron D. Harris), too, because those two roles were so important in terms of chemistry. She was willing to come in and do those, which meant so much to all the actors.
*  *  *
What scenes did you use for those chemistry reads on Matlock? Were scenes written just for the auditions that didn’t appear in the pilot or show?
If I remember correctly, I think Kathy came in and read with five or six ladies for Olympia, and we did maybe two or three scenes showing different energies and dynamics. One was friendlier, one was a little more professional and one was maybe more skeptical. You try to show different facets or sides of the character so you can see how an actor would bring this particular situation to life, how the actors and characters interact and relate.

And I do have to tell you — one of the anecdotes I like to tell — they say never meet your heroes, right? Well, Kathy was just one of those people that, I mean, I idolized and looked up to and loved for years. She's one of my favorite actresses. And I was so nervous, but she exceeded my expectations more than anything I could have ever hoped for. She's the most gracious, caring, humble, kind person. Not only to us in the casting office but also to the other actresses.

These actresses coming in [for the role of Olympia] and reading opposite Kathy Bates is no small feat. That's really nerve wracking. So we try to create as calm an environment as we can, and Kathy — she put everyone at ease. She was so warm and really generous in the room. If they would stumble, she was like, "No problem. Let's do it again." Her energy was just everything you'd want it to be. In doing that, these actors really felt so comfortable and so seen. She was so willing to just be there for them and help them through it. And that says so much about her and her dynamic, and what kind of an actress she is. It was so beautiful. She had just come off of being sick. She had tissues with her, and she wasn’t feeling 100% yet. But she still came in and was this warm, loving and generous actor and producer in the scene. That says so much about her and who she is. It was just so amazing. And, again, very rare that someone like that — of that caliber — is so open with that experience of reading with actors. She was more than willing to — she stayed for hours.

Jason Ritter Teases Bombshell ‘Matlock’ Finale With [OMITTED WORDS]: ‘Will Never Be the Same’ (Exclusive)
By Yana Grebenyuk   April 10, 2025
US Weekly article link

Spoiler

During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Jason Ritter previewed the upcoming two-episode conclusion, teasing, “There’s a lot of satisfying answers but it ends on a huge cliffhanger — in which all of the main characters’ lives hang in the balance. They could go in so many different directions. It’s so exciting.”
*  *  *
“I am thinking of all these different versions of what could happen,” he added. “I’m worried for everybody involved because there’s some real world consequences that can come with this. Even interpersonal relationships will never be the same. There are things that you just cannot unlearn or unsee about another person. You can heal but it’s going to be really interesting to see how they all navigate this bombshell news.”
*  *  *
Ritter continued: “And I’ve loved reading the different fan theories. We have a very smart audience and they’ve been able to adapt. I think initially they were completely in Matty’s corner of, ‘It’s got to be one of these three people.’ But then they started to think, ‘Well, what if it’s somebody she hasn’t thought of yet?’ Some of them have been very close [with their theories]. I’m excited to see what they all think when the truth comes out and how it measures up to what they thought.”

Skye P. Marshall’s Matlock Reboot Character Carries a Telfar Bag in Every Episode for This Important Reason (Exclusive)
By Erica Gerald Mason and Breanne L. Heldman    April 12, 2025
https://people.com/skye-p-marshall-why-her-matlock-character-carries-telfar-bag-in-every-episode-exclusive-11713989

Quote

While her character is a successful, high-powered attorney, Marshall explains that she wanted Olympia's wardrobe to have relatability by mixing in more affordable pieces.

"I wanted to have a bag that represented my culture, but also was affordable, so that even though in the pilot when I said that I charge a thousand dollars an hour, I didn't want to disconnect myself from not just my clients on the show who I know cannot afford me, but also I wanted to keep a connection to the audience who could also be like, 'Oh my God, I have a Telfar bag like my nieces do,' " she explains.

"And they have a $100 bag and they walk around like it's a $5,000 bag. So, that was something that was intentional for me, not just for the character, but for the culture," she adds.
*  *  *
The inclusion of the Telfar bags happened after “a very short conversation with the costume head,” Marshall recalls. “I wanted to attach something to Olympia's wardrobe that would wink at my culture,” she says.

They quickly landed on Telfar, which was founded by a Black designer, Telfar Clemens. Marshall also notes that the bag brand has been repped by megastar.

“I remember years ago when Beyoncé wore a Telfar bag, it just shook my community, and they were sold out constantly for years," she recalls.
*  *  *
“They were able to score over 12 different colors of Telfar bags,” Marshall tells PEOPLE of the costume department. “And so you can catch them in every episode, but I wanted to have a bag that represented my culture, but also was affordable.”

“Matlock” closed out its first season with an impressive audience, rounding out 2024-25 as broadcast’s most-watched new series.

The two-hour Season 1 finale, which aired from 9-11 p.m. ET on Thursday, scored 5.6 million viewers on CBS, according to Nielsen live-plus-same day figures, becoming the night’s most-watched program across broadcast.

When including viewership from the finale, the Kathy Bates-led series ranks as the No. 1 new broadcast series and No. 2 broadcast series. That ranking remained consistent in delayed viewing for “Matlock” from over a month of viewing, with the show averaging 17 million viewers across broadcast and streaming, according to Nielsen-live-plus-35-day figures and streaming data.

On broadcast alone, “Matlock” has averaged 9.67 million viewers after a week of viewing, according to Nielsen-live-plus-seven-day numbers through April 3, boosting it to win the 9 p.m. hour. When compared to the timeslot last season, CBS has seen a 53% uptick in viewership thanks to “Matlock.”

In one of the Matlock episodes there was a statement that Matty and family moved “across the country” to New York. Where did they live before? I’m also wondering where the mansion they live in Westchester is located. In the episode where Alfie loses his wallet, there is a library card that says Westchester library, and I thought I saw “Armonk” above it. Is that correct? –Fran
I love a specific question. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman confirms that Matty, Edwin and Alfie do live in Armonk — as the EP’s own brother does (“It’s a beautiful, grassy, green hamlet”) — and that they moved East from San Francisco, where Madeline built her law career.
