The second job served its purpose. I got some extra money from it and it was good to have a job to go to outside of the house, but it was never intended to last for years anyway. I only wanted to do it until I got a higher salary and a job more in line with my career goals. I have that now.

Excellent!👏

Gods, I cannot imagine ever trying to communicate on Reddit, given how awful I find the format.  That's a read only (or look at cat pictures) site for me.

Some stories are crazy.  The parenting subreddit I'm on is okay/normal, but the Asian Parent Stories one is all sorts of cray!!!!! THAT is where you probably find the most fake stories out there.

Is there anything worth watching on Peacock?  (Not being sarcastic here.)

I'm watching law & order on there all the versions. Snapped, movies etc. $20 a year is worth it to me. 1 movie ticket is like $20.

Paramount and showtime is $3 for 2 months. Wish it was a longer promo. At least 6 months.

HBO is $3 a month for 6 months.

My $20/1 yr. Peacock subscription is expiring in June. Unless there's something new to watch on NBC by then, I'll let it go.
But my oldest daughter is heavy into sports, so she was glad to be able to watch the Olympics with my login. She has refused to take money from me since she was 18 and she's now 45, so if she even casually asks if I have access to Peacock: Yes! I'll send you my new login in a few minutes. I just have to look it up [as I quickly subscribe again].
Right now I'm still watching the OG L&O reboot the next day (or later) on Peacock, but I could do without it. There are other shows like it that are more interesting on CBS (Paramount+) and ABC (Hulu), both of which I managed to also snag cheap, 1 yr. subscriptions to.

I signed up for it.  My initial reason was to watch college basketball.  Ten of the games being played by the team I follow are on Peacock.  Last year, it was two or three.  But now with 10 games on Peacock, I'd miss a third of the games if I didn't sign up.  I've been waiting for the Black Friday sale.

I have found some things to add to my watch list.  I've never seen Homicide:  Life on the Streets so I added that to my list.  I enjoy documentaries; in my quick skimming through that category I added at least a dozen to my list and I'm sure I'll find more.  I also added a few movies.  They also have Emergency! which was one of my favorite shows from the 1970s, so I added that too as a bit of nostalgia.  I think I'll find it was worth the $20.

I don't control the heat in my apartment. It's an old building. If I want air conditioner I buy the window one and pay for it.

Heat wise I'm at the mercy of the landlord or buy my own space heater.

My father lived in an older building in NYC and had this issue. He had to end up having his radiator valves adjusted to let out less heat - they are adjustable to let out more or less heat. You can ask your building super. to do it.

It’s been in the 70s this week in NYC. We’re not getting heat. I believe the boiler has a thermostat and doesn’t turn on. If some building somewhere is giving heat in this weather they may have a crazy landlord.

It seemed like every year just after Oct. 31 my dad's superintendent would turn the heat up full blast for a short time regardless of the temperature outside. We never found out why and we wondered if the building manager knew about it.

This wasn't so much of a problem before global warming because it was often colder out on that date, but in later years there were times the heat was sent up on hot days.

On 11/8/2024 at 1:00 PM, Mondrianyone said:

Or a defective thermostat. Either way they're not violating the law, but they're not following it either, as you and I both understand.

It can also depend on what side of the building feels colder because the super. can adjust the heat manually despite what the thermostat reads. My father lived on the opposite side of the building from the prevailing winds (and the superintendent's apartment) so he always got too much heat unless he got hit by a nor'easter and the winds came out of the East. Then he froze.

I'm rewatching the old 80's BBC production of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" with Jeremy Brett on Peacock. If you never watched it, it's just amazing and well worth it. It's heads and tails above anything done today. He was widely hailed as the best Sherlock ever. And I had a wicked crush on him back in the day, lol.

After that I'm going to rewatch the second series, "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" also with Jeremy, which was done a couple of years later. I'm finding out he had a tragic life and died at only 62 from a heart attack. I remember hearing he had died in the mid '90s but never learned the entire story until this week. I think there were more episodes planned that never got filmed. He was married to a producer of Masterpiece Theater and was poorly medicated for bipolar disorder. When his wife died he was so stricken with grief that he spiraled down and didn't take care of his health. Smoking 2+ packs of cigarettes a day didn't help. But his performance is just incredible and the entire production is first rate.

I'm lucky in that I get Peacock included with my Xfinity/Comcast subscription, but we pay so much per month we get a lot included as we should! I know I've watched other things on Peacock but I can't remember what offhand right now.

Yes indeed, I watched the original Sherlock and also had a big crush on the very handsome Jeremy Brett!

I just had three of my old-style cast-iron radiators adjusted, and now I need a fourth.  They're in off position and they're still blasting heat.  The super had to bring in outside plumbers, and they had to replace the valves and the "traps" (where the steam comes in on the other side).

I do not see this listed on Peacock.  For me it's listed on Britbox (which i have as a Prime add-on).

Speaking of my old building, I just ran into one of my neighbors, and she is planning a 100th anniversary celebration for our building for next year.  The architect, Rosario Candela, is famous, and this was one of the buildings he did when he was up and coming.  We are gathering all kinds of history.

It's so worth watching again. I find that watching old shows on my big flat screen with digital technology helps me see things I never saw the first time. And I get things out of them I never got 40+ years ago when I was younger. Being older gives me a whole new perspective on them. And of course my crush is still there all these years later!!

LOL, I'm getting PTSD just reading this as it's exactly what my father went through with his radiators.

Interesting. I think I misspoke, I see Sherlock Holmes on Xumo, Plex and Tubi and I think at least some of those may be free. I don't know why I thought it was on Peacock. I watched something else on Peacock very recently so maybe that's why I got confused. Still worth rewatching anyway!

I would love to get Britbox but don't feel like paying more for it as it's not included with my cable for free.

Thank you SO MUCH for this! I'll pass this along to my NYC architecture afficionado husband who will be fascinated by it. I wish my mother would have known about this. She always appreciated learning about noteworthy Sicilians. Although she may have known, I don't know. After she died I found a treasure trove of newspaper and magazine clippings in her files with stuff like this in it. I was amazed at how many things she was aware of long before they became significant in the popular culture and consciousness. I still have that file somewhere.

Hulu is $1! Yay!!!

I took advantage of $1 Hulu a few Black Fridays ago and never regretted it. I let it renew and even after renewal it only costs me $12 a month and considering I watch a few shows on it, it's well worth it. It's one of those rare big ones I don't get included with my cable. We do get Max, Netflix and many more.

it's gonna rain on Thanksgiving here. Guess I will stay home.

You are in NYC maybe there's something going on you can go to so you don't feel alone? I know my BFF in NYC would be in this situation if not for a local friend who invites her every year. I'd have her come up to my house but we get invited to my husband's relatives' houses on Thanksgiving every year in Middletown, NY. We usually have her over on Christmas for a few days but we're in the middle of some home renovations that were put off way too long by insurance and construction company delays so that won't happen this year.

Anyway I actually wish I could stay home on Thanksgiving this year. I've been unusually busy and under stress lately with the renovations so I could use the downtime.

I just checked Hulu because I want to watch White Bird, which someone mentioned.  $20/month or $20 to rent from Amazon Prime.  Not happening.

Has anyone ever considered going back to school to do a graduate degree in an area they barely focused on as an undergrad?  Or at all?  This will require some catching up, of course - completing an equivalent of a minor.....or am I just crazy

Sorry!!

Sure, why not!  Never hurts to go back to school and learn new stuff.  I dropped out of college after 2 years and when I decided to go back, I seriously considered changing my major, but I really just wanted to get the degree and finish.  So I have a very useful degree in Theater, instead of a really useful degree in History... 😄

My bro got his undergraduate degree in English, then went and got a Masters in Urban Planning and Historic Preservation.

So do it!!

My mother went to university in her 50s and did an undergraduate degree and then a masters.  She had trained as a nurse back in the day to please her parents, this she did for herself.  Go for it!

I did. My 40-year-old daughter is doing it now.
Everything changes so fast these days, even if you got a graduate degree in the same field from 5-10 years ago there would be catching up.
Here's an article that makes that point:

It's going to rain. Being outside for no reason is not for ne. I don't feel like doing anything alone. I'd go to the movies but it's $20 a ticket. Soooo I think I will just stay home. It is what it is.

I hate this kind of language - does it mean $8 for each of the first two months, or $4 each?  I assume the former, but I wish they'd just say.

I also did it.  I went to law school at 37, graduating at 40.   I previously worked in publishing.  I would have scoffed at the idea of being a lawyer earlier in my life.

However, I did not need to complete additional coursework before pursuing that particular graduate degree.

Thanks for the suggestion for White Bird.  I checked out of curiosity and my library does have the DVD, but I don't have a DVD player!  I did reserve the book though.

Do you still have a computer with a DVD bay built in?  I still have one and can watch DVDs that way.  Or maybe your library has a lending library of gadgets.

The LSAT was a bit scary.   I took a Kaplan prep class to learn how to do the logic puzzles.  I then proceeded to practice hundreds of them to build up speed.  So they use the LSAT for Canadian law schools?

Does your library allow for online 'rental'?  I know both the Queens Public Library & NYPL -the libraries I use- allow for e-books (IDK if they'd do the same for films).

Good idea about the library - I know they have some stuff you can borrow, but I don't know if they have DVD players, but I'll check next time I'm in.

The last laptop I owned with a DVD player died a long time ago and I've moved to less bulky and lighter machines - MS Surface and currently a Samsung Galaxy.

Unfortunately, no.  Maybe I'll find a friend to watch it with.  I'll take the ice cream for comfort eating.

Yes they do.  The ones in English Canada, anyway.  Quebec works under a different legal system and have different entrance requirements.
