Poker Face is a 10 episode TV Series with a four episode premiere on January 26, 2023 on Peacock, with the rest of the episodes being released weekly.

Follow Charlie on a cross-country road trip in her ‘69 Plymouth Barracuda as she meets a rogue’s gallery of characters and avenges a new injustice each episode, armed with little more than her uncanny ability to detect lies and a genuine appreciation for her fellow humans (and the occasional dog).

Would it be overly optimistic and/or would I jinx it if I started threads for the first 4 episodes?

It has a 100% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes now (29 reviews in so far). On Metacritic it has an 85 at the moment ("Universal Acclaim") with 23 reviews in. Looking good! I'm excited; I've been anticipating this one for a while.

I suspected it'd be good because I had seen some critics complain about Peacock's strategy to embargo the (sure to be positive) reviews until a day before the show would air instead of using the reviews to build up some steam.

Here's the schedule for release of the episodes on Peacock:

Here Is the Release Schedule for 'Poker Face':

  • Episodes 1 to 4 - January 26
  • Episode 5 - February 2
  • Episode 6 - February 9
  • Episode 7 - February 16
  • Episode 8 - February 23
  • Episode 9 - March 2
  • Episode 10 - March 9

——from Newsweek (1/26/23), beware of spoilers in the article.

I apologize for whining in the first episode thread about them expecting us to watch 4 episodes in one week;
there are 2 weeks between the release of the first 4 episodes and the 5th episode.

After that [the first 4] they are weekly.
Still seems weird, but perhaps a worthwhile experiment.

A lot of streaming services do this. Apple, Hulu (I think).  I actually think I prefer this format over Netflix (binge them all at once if you're addicted) or cable (week to week episodes).  But man, it's going to be hard to wait week to week after this binge.

No.  It's a week between them all. Feb. 2 is this Thursday.

Oops. Right.😊
Well, now that I’ve seen 3 of them, the scheduling of the episode releases sort of makes sense: There’s 4 for those who prefer to binge, followed by 6 for those of us who like to dissect and autopsy our murder mysteries individually.

It's good, but I don't have to pay so that's hard to answer.  For any Canadians interested in watching this, it's streaming on CityTV on Demand.  I did not have to pay extra for it, it's just there in my On Demand options.  You just have to search for it.

However, if you already get Citytv through a cable, satellite, or similar TV provider such as Rogers Cable, you should be able to watch Poker Face (which is spelled with two words, not as "Pokerface") on demand through your TV service, as we explain below.

Has anyone watched it?  Is it worth Peacock+? It sure looks awesome.

I decided it was worth $4.99 after seeing the first ep and the second episode did not disappoint. I had Peacock+ previously for some other program and cancelled after that was over - like Disney+ (which I got to watch Andor and since its just a $1.99 add on to Hulu, which I love, I've kept it for now) I can't find much, if anything, I want to watch on the *entire channel*, which is pathetic. So I'll probably watch this series to the end of the season and cancel again.

Rian Johnson was on Seth Meyers tonight!  Pretty cool to see him talk and how he is.  Natasha Lyonne will be on tomorrow night!

Full segments are/will be on YouTube.

I saw Lyonne, star of Poker Face, on Myers.  She is the most unique personality that I have seen in a long time. I’m not sure what to think about her.   Omg, had to look up her bio.  Hmmm…..Yep, definitely going to subscribe to Peacock+ this weekend and start with Poker Face.

I saw this deal and thought it was worth trying.  Reviews of this series pushed me over the top. There have been a few Peacock series that sounded interesting so I think there's enough worth trying a year's worth (at $30).  It says the deal's good for "a few days" but I was still able to use it this morning.  (This is the tier with ads.)

I'm kind of conflicted about that. Yes, there are a lot of comedic elements but the show is largely based in drama with black comedic elements through it. It's tone reminds me a lot of old school primetime dramas - L.A. Law and St. Elsewhere in particular - that absolutely had absurdist elements running throughout, as Poker Face does, but never would have been classified as comedies. Poker Face literally begins with

Spoiler

someone being murdered because she (presumably) discovered child porn on someone's computer.

I assume looking at the landscape, they think it will have a better shot against the comedy competition but... I just think this is the definition of category fraud.

Agreed, but this is par for the course these days.
For example, the excellent series Barry went this route and garnered Emmy wins for the lead actors and the technical crews:  emmys.com/shows/barry

Although, with Barry, both Bill Hader and Henry Winkler are known as comedians, whereas Natasha Lyonne has gained name recognition in her other drama series.

Grace and Frankie, The Kominsky Method, Why Women Kill, Monk, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Only Murders In The Building are other examples of excellent “dark comedy” shows that could also be described as dramas.

They’re my favorite kind of shows. Too bad there’s not a Dramedy category.
But with award ceremonies running too long, Dramedy is not going to be added, regardless of the strength of the argument in favor of adding the category, given the huge increase in numbers of shows across platforms these days. Dramedy would give more shows a crack at winning well-deserved awards. IMO

🤷🏻‍♀️

At least Barry is a 30 minute series and was largely comedic for the most part until perhaps the most recent season.  But even the most recent season has some outright comedy that I don't really get from Poker Face.  And Poker Face is 45-60 minutes each episode.

I thought she talked the way she does for the Russian Dolls role but then seeing her do the same in Poker Face, I guess it's her thing.

Didn't see the Slums of Beverly Hills, which was a long time ago.  Be curious if she was doing it back then as well.

I'm late to watching this.  I don't know what I was waiting for! It's great.

I started looking for things to watch when regular season and Hacks ended, and I forgot that I had watched episode one of this and never continued.

At least I can binge.

Yeah, I can't find a date either.

From Is there a Poker Face season 2 release date?

Quote

In an interview with Deadline in June, Johnson said of the release date, “That’s something that’s really up in the air. I mean, a lot of it has to do with what happens in terms of the writers’ strike, and there’s so much that’s unknown at the moment. Also, right now my priority is getting the next Benoit Blanc movie going.”

Also this from Natasha:

Quote

"...There’s some big ideas and I’ve been going around all of this award circuit with contracts and so I’ve been getting people to sign up for episodes. It’s been really helpful … Billie Eilish. I’ll try to get her to sign one later tonight. You know, I hear Jodie Foster is gonna be here tonight. So I’ll try to get a signature, some sort of a blood oath or you know, spitting in a palm and a handshake still holds in this town.”

Jodie Foster would be AWESOME!
