I wish the show had just stuck to the black and white story because as soon as they switch to the present day characters I completely lose interest. Honestly, it would have been so much better to just do the flashback story as Part 2 of the season. Without the present day stuff it's easily one of the best things this series has done in years. It may not be terribly original but it's atmospheric as all get-out and just works for me on every level.

The present day stuff is crippled by amateurish acting but even without that consideration, it feels tacked on and unnecessary.

I agree, but I my heart did go out to Troy and Cal when they were mourning the murder of the hybrid. You'd think the aliens would have killed the kid in another room but then again, this is all about them. But I think it's safe to say that Cal won't be in the finale after his facehugger encounter (witch kinda sucks because you have to admit that Nico Greetham is very hot, and I will say this, he totally sold me on the relationship with Isaac. At least in the romantic part of it.), but they kinda brought it on themselves with going it alone with the birth.

As for the flashback part.....I've got to give it to Cody he's making the most of basically an extended cameo role. When he flung the Secret Service guys around in the hallway I thought "Damn, the Force is strong with this one......"

That part actually made me laugh out loud. I'm not sure that was the effect they were going for.

So is Cody Fern's character supposed to be a robot? I LOLed when they showed Mamie riding him in the bed. That was one of the funniest scenes this season.

Poor Cal. The romance between him and Troy was actually pretty touching at the end. Sad they lost their baby and also Cal.

Boy, they're sure glibly tossing everything into this stew of a plot! Area 51, Marilyn's death, JFK assassination, moon landing fakery... feels like cultural touchstone conspiracy bingo.

Cody Fern's nuance-free delivery reminded me of Sweet D's overt dramatics: "I'm being arch!"

Nonetheless, the old portions are pretty entertaining. Best line this season by far: "By the way,  he loved. My fudge."

I was waiting for her to finish that sentence with "he really packed it away".

Marilyn Monroe seemed more Marilyn Monroe.

I was waiting for the caesarean section scene to end poorly with the guy bleeding to death because the aliens used a laser scalpel that cauterized the wound as it cuts and he just used (half of a pair of unsterilized scissors?), at least they were sharp. I was surprised by the lack of blood.

I think whats disappoints me here is that... there's really no plot. The modern storyline will end with all the young adults dead, except maybe one who is turning out perfect hybrid babies as the aliens slave breeder. Eisenhower will die, the aliens are probably behind Watergate and... what?

I'm the same way.  I feel like have to give a separate review for this story for the present and the past segments.  Past segment is entertaining with its 50s sci-fi vibe, present is boring as hell.

I continue to vastly prefer the flashbacks. The conspiracy theory bingo nature of it mixed with its over the top 50s scifi atmosphere makes it a ton of fun. The black and white really works and I love the over the top cheese alien music that is always playing, I half expect The Amazing Criswell to show up any second to tell us that we are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives Also, damn Mamie! The next History Channel documentary about the Eisenhowers that will be on at my parents when I visit will certainly look different now!

The modern day bits are still not as good as the past scenes, but they are picking up a bit, and I do find Troy and Cal's relationship to be pretty sweet and endearing, even if things are not looking great for them right now. Kudos to the actor playing Troy, I've knocked the modern scene acting for awhile but he really did sell his devastation at losing his alien/human baby abomination.

I have only seen the first ep of part two and really disliked the present day stuff so I was wondering if it would hurt my viewing experience if I just fast forwarded over that stuff and only focus on the more interesting black and white storyline?

Not really.

Very vague spoiler -

Spoiler

Ultimately it's pointless. The 50s stuff ties into the modern stuff, but not in any kind of satisfying way.

Well, the black and white story eventually folds into the present day story, so you might be confused by the time you get to the end of it.
