happyhumanist April 7, 2014 Share April 7, 2014 Wasn't she great in the second episode?? That smile after Cynthia successfully delivers the baby. Priceless. 2 Link to comment
mbutterfly August 6, 2014 Share August 6, 2014 I've been a fan of Pam Harris since Rosemary and Thyme. After many prompts from friends I am just now binge-watching CtM. So loving it. 3 Link to comment
DHDancer August 7, 2014 Share August 7, 2014 Pam Ferris. You should watch her in The Darling Buds of May, which is where I fell in love with her (and David Jason) 3 Link to comment
JudyObscure February 1, 2015 Share February 1, 2015 I love her. I think she's exactly how an older, experienced nun would be after years of delivering babies in such a poor neighborhood. I love how she's no-nonsense but totally non-judgmental, even when the young ones are all shocked about something. One of my favorite episodes had Sister Evangelina and Trixie climbing the rope up the side of the ship together. Those two could carry the show for me. 6 Link to comment
Badger February 2, 2015 Share February 2, 2015 According to the books, Sister Evangeline came from a very poor background herself. Not quite in the workhouse, but close to it. Sister Monica Joan, OTOH, came from a wealthy family. Link to comment

But now I have ordered DBOM from the library and looking forward to watching it. Thank you, it sounds delicious. Link to comment
Kohola3 March 9, 2015 Share March 9, 2015 Also catch her in Rosemary and Thyme. She's wonderful and the flowers are gorgeous! 1 Link to comment

Fireball December 9, 2017 Share December 9, 2017 I just caught an old episode and I forgot how horrible Sister Evangeline could be to Sister Monica Joan! I'm sure Sister Monica Joan would drive you nuts always eating all the sweets, making messes, and just doing whatever she wants etc. But Sister Evangeline really seems to have a mean streak when it come to Sister Monica Joan; she talks down to her, bullies her, and makes nasty comments referring to Sister Monica Joan having come from a wealthy family. I'm sorry that Sister Evangeline grow up dirt poor and had a hard life, but just because someone comes from money doesn't mean they had a wonderful life. Link to comment
AZChristian December 9, 2017 Share December 9, 2017 If you think she was mean in Call the Midwife, check her out as "Aunt Marge" in the third Harry Potter movie (Prisoner of Azkaban). If you're not a Potterhead, and don't want to watch the whole movie to see her . . . she's right at the beginning. Link to comment
movingtargetgal December 17, 2017 Share December 17, 2017 I hated Aunt Marge and was so happy Harry "blew her up". I did not realize it was Pam Ferris in the role. Because it can't be said enough.....I really miss Sister Evangelina. :( 3 Link to comment

RedheadZombie June 9, 2018 Share June 9, 2018 Did the actress choose to leave the show? She was my favorite nun, and I'm a little pissed that she's gone but we're still stuck with Monica Joan. MJ has a few sweet moments, but otherwise I can't stand her selfishness, her need to be the center of attention, and her constant babbling of poetry. I'm sure some of this behavior is rooted in her coming from wealth, but she's been a nun for most of her life and should have adjusted to things like sharing. 2 Link to comment

Pam Ferris left the show at age 67 to spend more time with her husband and their dogs. She was commuting daily from her home in Kent to London for the first few seasons, but then filming moved to Surrey and she had to stay in a hotel during the week and only get home on weekends. She decided that, at her age, she just wasn't willing to give up time at home or move to Surrey so she 'retired' from the show. 9 Link to comment

One by one my favorites leave - Jenny, Chummy, Sister Evangelina, and I guess Cynthia isn't in the seventh season. If they touch Phyllis and Shelagh, I might be done. 1 1 Link to comment

Bonzie June 10, 2018 Share June 10, 2018 I read that the main problem was that she couldn't find a place to rent that would accept dogs. She didn't want to be parted from them while the eps were being filmed. 1 Link to comment
MV713 June 15, 2018 Share June 15, 2018 Seems very selfish of the show to not help her out and keep her - she was by far my most favorite character and I was devastated when they killed her off. 4 Link to comment

I'm pretty sure there would have been more than just what the public statements convey behind her decision. I doubt we will know what they are any time soon. The show has made it clear that they will keep Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt - 82) until she decides she can no longer handle the rigours of the schedule. So I'm pretty sure Pam Ferris' decision was well considered and final. 1 Link to comment
RedbirdNelly January 30, 2021 Share January 30, 2021 her death was so sad; I wish the actress had found a way/wanted to stay on I saw her in The Children of Man--took me a bit to figure out "why do I know this person?" Then I realized she was a midwife--and a midwife in the movie! Link to comment

Yes--I just realized that was her from reading earlier posts. I'll look for her next time I catch another HP movie marathon. 1 Link to comment
