Rock The Block - General Discussion

Where would the kids sleep in any of these houses? They had a second bedroom in some but what if you have 3 or more kids? The one house has a bunkhouse but that would only work for little kids; teenagers would want privacy and space. The bonus rooms wouldn’t work because they lacked doors and closets. All of the houses had pluses and minuses to me so I was ok with the winners. For a real world house though, I would cut down on football field sized bathrooms and quirky speakeasy/cold plunge/wine rooms and add bedrooms.

Weren't they 6 bedroom houses? I think we figured out there was a bedroom and bathroom in the basement. There had to have been at least 2 more bedrooms on the same level as the main bedroom, along with the one they did with the balcony.

I am okay with Alison and Michel's win because I think he is very talented, and this may hopefully prevent her from ever coming back. God, she is a harpy!

Please let Alison retire from HGTV after her win!

I am assuming this subdivision does not have covenants or an HOA, thus allowing for the container home (which must've put Alison and Michel over the top) and livestock and RV parking pad.

I still think they should have outdoor kitchens over modular homes, greenhouses, etc. And Alison's rock backyard was awful.

I think they re-did the houses to remove some of the bedrooms to make enormous bathrooms, closets and other niche spaces. I don’t remember any of the basements having a bedroom but I think the brother’s house had a hidden small bedroom on the first floor. One house had a Murphy bed that could be pulled down in an office but none of these seemed like bedrooms you would use for kids. They didn’t mention any other bedrooms besides two in the judging or house tours. I assume they would have to turn something into additional bedrooms.

They usually change the houses a lot before listing them, and I'm sure that place will have a HOA.     The homes are really overpriced for the area, and over for the subdivision by a lot.

I agree about the outdoor kitchens, but I'm guessing anything installed for the show, like the shipping containers, will be long gone after the open house happens.

Alison will never leave HGTV voluntarily.

I was appalled that Allison's house won. The kitchen and back yard were atrocious, the shipping container thing was laughable. Turning a bedroom into a gym was ridiculous (a gym on the lower level would have been great). And the mini pickleball court? Are you kidding me??  I really can't believe that appraisers thought any of that added value and that that house was worth more than the others (which, though they all had their flaws, were much nicer than Allison's.) I smell producer interference to kiss up to Allison, although heaven knows why.

Yes, yes and more yes.  The only thing I liked was the kitchen and a lot of people here didn't like even that.  The pickleball area with the hideous wall art was absolutely awful.  I can't imagine how anyone thought that added value.

I wasn't very impressed with any of the houses taken as a whole although several had some nice areas.  I was hoping the brothers would win just because I liked them.

I was surprised by her and Michel’s win. I do not think it was the best home, much less some of the design choices that you mentioned. She kept whining about her needing this win, as it was her third time doing this show. Perhaps the producers let her win to shut her up or get her off this show. I thought her yard was the worst. What child wants to go barefoot on pebbles and rocks?

I did like the drone reveal.

I don't know the terms of Alison's contract with HGTV, but if they want to get rid of her, I'm sure they can. The fact that she's still around tells me that she is still wanted, for reasons that elude me. I've never been a fan.

She's even got a new show in the works!

I haven't even watched the last two episodes, but there was no way that Allison would've come back for her third time on this series and lost again. She could've glued hay to the ways and still won.

I don't hate her or love her. Her design aesthetic is hit or miss for me. That gradient tile bath she did a few seasons back was stunning! This season's basement was awful! Pickleball?!?

I don't like Allison. She has the mobile version of RestingBFace. Won't be tuning in to her new show of rehabbed desert houses with odd combinations of Boring Common and Weirdo Different. I can picture the interiors already.

In general, I'm over Theater Rooms; Stand-Alone Tubs one needs to be part of Cirque du Soleil to get into and out of; Gargantuan Marble Islands one could carve "The David" from; Painted Kitchen Cabinets (have these designers never Googled more modern styles, as in Italian Sleek? https://www.oppoliahome.com/the-timeless-beauty-of-italian-kitchen-design/); and the Bane of All Things Sane: "Open Floor Plans." Why yes, I DO want to see, hear, and smell every sight, sound, and odor from the sofa to the stove! NOT!

I was watching a show the other day that said we have Frank Lloyd Wright to thank (blame) for open floor plans.

Well, it took a long time for it to trickle down then, since his heyday was the first half of the 20th century. Yeah, he had a very long career, but his house plans didn't change too terribly much from the 1920s. But his houses really aren't what most people are calling open plan today. All his houses I've toured have had discrete rooms. The biggest feature that relates to open plan is open doorways in the common areas.

I really don't like that style cabinets. They remind me too much of those old metal cabinets that I really hate. Just a personal prejudice.

That saying about if all you meet all day are jerks then you are the jerk is true. On this show it's telling that A.V. always breaks up with her partners.  She and Michel weren't even in the same shots, and definitely weren't a partnersihp.

Actually, I bet most of the kitchens in these houses need multiple microwaves, because very little cooking is going to happen.

I know these aren't  great for TV, but when I ponder, which I often do, what I would do differently or at least be more on top of were I ever to build another house, components would include:

--Electrical outlets, of which there are never enough. You know how some people like to position sofas away from walls? Yep--add a floor outlet or two for lamps.

--TV Cable outlets. See above. I include kitchens, bathrooms, and decks (which I do have).

--At least one phone landline. Electricity outages don't affect landlines, but if your Internet goes down,...

--Separate electrical outlet microwave-dedicated.

--Said microwave placed at counter level. Innumerable times I have berated myself for placing mine on a shelf between upper cabinets.

--Laundry room with deep sink and space for ironing board.

---First-floor "MIL Suite."

--Entry mudroom from garage. Only one Team added this, which I think the Original Builder should have included.

--Backyard shed for outdoor machinery, furnishings, etc..

--Storage beyond "Walk-In Closets," for miscellaneous, large, and/or seasonal stuff: Sporting or hobby equipment/gear; bikes, boards, ATVs; decorative items; bedding (six bedrooms' worth of blankets, pillows, quilts, etc.?!); and so on.

--Smoke, CO2, and Intruder detectors and alarms.

For starters!

I also think maybe the show's teams could have planted some trees.

Don't forget coat closets and broom closets! Where do people in these very open concept spaces put their brooms and mops and vacuum cleaners??? You can't just fold those up and put them in a drawer. Oh, and step ladders, too.

Does anyone else NOT want a 12 person shower with rainfall shower heads? I want a generously sized one-person shower, with the ability to get clean without having to wash my hair every time I shower. I want a size where sometimes the shower gets all steamy and warm and soothes my aches or warms me up besides what is being hit with water, or a Vicks disk will make it so I can breathe again.

At least with the green kitchen or rust bathroom tiles I wasn't stuck in same HGTV loop of "oh crap, is my TV only in black and white? Did the color go out?" (true story.)

Information on the houses.

Quote

But thanks to a fan on Reddit, we now have the answers. Hamlet Homes, the builder of the season six houses in Grantsville, Utah, hosted a block party, and fans and potential buyers could tour the homes. They also included flyers for each house, and the details listed are pretty interesting. Here's the breakdown.

Alison and Michel's Refined Rustic house: $1,399,900

Chelsea and Cole's Cowboy Contemporary house: $1,399,900

Tristyn and Kamohai's Moody Modern house: $1,379,900

Jonathan and Jordan's Modern Farmhouse: $1,369,900

Each home is listed as having 7 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms, plus a 3-car garage. The exception is Cole and Chelsea's house, which had an additional quarter bath. Fans will remember that they chose to add a shower to the powder room on their winning design on the second episode. Also worth note, according to the listing price, they tied with Alison and Michel.

It's not exactly clear what was include in the appraisal price for the show, but commenters on Reddit are speculating that the casita is being auctioned off and therefore would not factor into the actual sales price.
