  1. I waffled between Peru and Ecuador for FJ tonight, and chose incorrectly. Boo hiss. And the only TS I got was Cenozoic. Not my best night tonight.
  2. That is what it means -- I clicked through to make sure. But yes, I had a hard time figuring out whether the man, the grocery bag, or the child was being held.
  3. Instaget FJ for me tonight. I love that book. I re-read it occasionally, too (along with Phantom Tollbooth from last night). I also got the TS of Ella & Elle, Mads Mikkelson, New Zealand, and copacetic.
  4. This has got to be one of the most awkwardly written headlines ever: "Child dies after father trips on grocery bag while being held."
  5. Insta-guess FJ for me tonight. I am terrible at history, but 1773 plus hold (which made me think of ships) led me to one of the few things I can marginally identify, historically speaking. I also got the TS of Canyon de Chelly, turntable, and Phantom Tollbooth. I am terribly sad that Phantom Tollbooth was a TS! That's a really fun book. I re-read it periodically. I also laughed at the "fire" clue.
  6. I went to the Canterbury Tales tonight, too, but knew The Handmaid's Tale was way before 2013. I've never read any of Dan Brown's books (and I'm not going to, either!), so I never would have thought of one of them. I did get several TS, though, including please tell me more, Dear Prudence, long time no see, Interior, the glen, and lion.
  7. Catching up from last night -- I did not get FJ, although I should have, since I'm a Gemini! I did not know that Castor and Pollux were Argonauts. But I did get the TS of Yellow Sea, bray, Dr. Jill Biden, Armour, Celeste Ng, and midden. This game would have been the perfect time for Ryan to have bet zero for FJ. If New Champ had missed, Ryan would have won again -- and at the very least, he would have come in second.
  8. That is a wonderful movie. Fortunately, he is not the main focus of it.
  9. I went to a special showing of The Wizard Of Oz last night, and realized just how traumatized I was as a child by that whole tornado scene. The flying monkeys didn’t bother me much back in the day, but damn, that tornado terrified me!
  10. Right. Like Nicole Kidman actually goes to the AMC theater to watch a movie.
  11. I love teddy bears, but I'm not a hugger. 😉
  12. And today is National Doughnut Day.....
  13. I had to think about it for a second, but I did get FJ tonight! That's one for the week... I also got the TS of stationery/stationary, powwow, Joseph Conrad, mole, Skylab, and avoirdupois. I even surprised myself by remembering how to spell avoirdupois.
  14. I had a similar experience with an internal candidate. We warned him at the start of the interview that he needed to treat it as though we were total strangers who knew nothing of his work (and in fact, a couple of the hiring committee members truly didn't know anything about his work). He was ill-prepared, and said, "Well, you know what I've done" at least once. It was simultaneously infuriating and disappointing.
  15. Because then we'd have people wondering why her mom was more interested in the cat than in getting a bandage for the girl.
  16. Today's peeve of the day is all the bloody chit chat and inane interviews during the Scripps Spelling Bee. I used to love to watch this competition, but this year, it's almost unbearable. It's been on nearly an hour, and we haven't even gotten through one round (13 spellers!). At one point, they had (I think) last year's winner giving commentary while the competitors were spelling! I mean, the kids couldn't hear her, but I could and I found it to be highly annoying. I love Dr. Bailly, and he could read me the phone book with his lovely voice, but I don't think I can take all the rest of this. I did love the one girl's outfit. She was dressed in a yellow jumper/skirt (I think it had bees on it) with a black top and tights. ETA: I'm not a fan of this definition round, either. I'd bet these kids could spell these words they don't know the definition of. It's a spelling bee, not a word meaning bee.
  17. Archive game for me tonight due to a news-related Special Report. I am on a roll this week with FJ -- did not get it again. The only TS I got were anticoagulant, and fentanyl.
  18. I will second the harness recommendation!
  19. I know the "Anyone? Anyone?" part from cultural osmosis. I've never seen the movie. And I knew tariff just because I knew it. I also like the new emoji reactions!
  20. As history is not my strong suit, I was not in the least bit surprised to have absolutely no clue for FJ. I couldn't even come up with Waterloo. But I did manage to get the TS of afterbirth, synergy, tariffs, Rio Grande, Thames, and kibitzing. As far as fixing the game, I believe there is no way to predict who will become a super champ and who will fade after one win. I doubt test scores are an accurate predictor -- you never know if someone with a perfect test score will get flustered on stage with the lights and camera and all, while someone who barely passed will take to all that extra pressure like a duck to water.
  21. I did miss those clues! Stupid local TV station. I definitely would have gotten the second one, but I'm not sure I would have gotten the first one.
  22. I missed FJ again tonight! It's been ages since I read Catcher in the Rye, and while I know of several poems by Robert Burns, none of the ones I could think of had anything to do with rye. Oh well. I did get the TS of hickory, Andre, tongue, Boston, protein, and Flathead. My TV station cut to commercial immediately after the Bob Dylan clue. Did I miss anything? Or was that where they would have gone to a break anyway?
