  1. Or perhaps they had advanced copies of "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathon Swift.
  2. I'm not saying they didn't. But now that we've had treatments for these things and would be going back to having basically nothing, I wouldn't want to risk it. Look up pictures of saddle nose, or the findings of the awful Tuskegee experiments on syphilis. That's definitely not something I would want to risk. I would want to be in the best physical condition possible when there are man-eating zombies running around. The zombie apocalypse is no place for syphilitic insanity.
  3. I would fear STDs after the fall of civilization. Think about it. The pharmacies have been raided. Going about getting tested for STDs would be pretty damn hard, and treated for them next to impossible. So things like syphilis would become rampant and untreated, with people ending up with saddle noses after a few years and succumbing to syphilitic insanity. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, pubic lice, all of that would be on the rise if people were fucking like crazy. Not to mention how hard pregnancy and childbirth would be. Placenta previa patient? You'd be dead, no doubt. Need a c-section? Probably dead. Someone with horrible health issues like me that make pregnancy incompatible with life? You see where I'm going. Then there's the smell and filth factor. Even though I'm a lesbian and less likely to contract STDs than heterosexuals and gay men, I still would abstain, just because of how filthy everyone is.
  4. That's fascinating. I always knew about his dad, his dad's coming out and becoming a bastion of the Christian Gay Rights movement. It takes a lot of guts to live a life that's the polar opposite from what you were doing. Even as an atheist, he is a hero to me.
  5. I love Mike White so much, and love everything I've seen him in. Do you know what kind of personal troubles he was having while writing this series? It would probably explain the melancholia of his character.
  6. I felt for Amy in this one. The homeless shelter would have been perfect, but it just wan't enough pay for her when she is so deeply in debt. (And hello, Scott Wilson! Nice to see you with your head back on.) I loved all of Tyler's excuses for her to get out for the interview. Tell him your old babysitter died and you have to go to the funeral. Tell him your cat has been having seizures and that you have to go put it down. Oh, Tyler, how I love you. I love the fighting that Connie and Omar were having over the flu. This show gets by so well and such little funny moments. I can't wait until the heavy stuff starts to take hold.
  7. So we finally meet Tyler, Dougie and the rest of the Island of Misfit Toys down in Cogentiva. Tyler has such a sadness in him from the very beginning. As much as I love Amy, he really is my favorite character on the show. Mike White writes and plays him absolutely beautifully. It still amazes me that this is the same guy from "Chuck and Buck." And even with all of the misfits down in Cogentiva, Amy still does not fit in, and instead just sort of latches onto Tyler. I can totally understand why Amy was pissed at Krista. It wasn't just that she trained her and taught her everything she knew, and that Krista now has her job and office, but that she's playing the cliquish office games and lying to Amy about something as stupid as lunch and treating her like a pariah. Yes, Amy can be exhausting, but you sure as hell liked and put up with her when she as helping you go places. I really appreciated that this show was doing something different than the typical "woman leading a secret life" or "woman on the edge" series that Showtime is so fond of. Amy is neither a hero nor anti-hero. She's just an idealist woman with a dose of narcissism that is trying to get her life back on track. I appreciate that.
  8. I loved Amy right from the start in this episode. She kind of reminds me of my Ciocia (Aunt) Stef, who is one of those do-gooders, yet is unknowingly selfish at times, and can be very cringeworthy. She sounds just like her, and I love her to death. She's one of those "give you the shirt off of her back" kind of people. I loved so much when she went back to Abbadon, they told her they didn't have the position for her anymore, and she laid down the law that she had contacted a lawyer and that it would be illegal to fire her because of her "preexisting condition." That was a bit of a fist-bump moment for me. And her time in Hawaii really did her some favors, because Laura Dern has never looked more beautiful, and I've been a fan of hers from back in her David Lynch movie days. Can't wait to discuss this series with all of you guys!
  9. I think there should be a thread per episode, but that the pace should be maybe three per week for those who can't binge watch the way the others can. It's an easy show to get through, and it always left me wanting more. A truly great series, and a wonderful showcase for Laura Dern, Mike White, Luke Wilson and Diane Ladd's talents.
  10. He pulled out the Spirit Essences this episode! I actually use the same stuff he used on Barnabus- the Stress Stopper- on my kitty Floyd, and it does work wonders. There was a whole bundle of neuroses going on with that wife though. She seemed a little slow, too. I'm glad that they were able to fix that kitty, he was a handsome boy.
  11. Does anyone know what is going with the DirecTV dispute? I lost my local CBS station for about a week over the summer, I almost lost FX a couple years ago but that was resolved before anything happened, and now they are saying we are at risk of losing AMC, IFC, Sundance and BBC America at the end of the year if contract negotiations don't go as planned. Anyone have any insider info? I need my Walking Dead, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Better Call Saul, The Returned and Portlandia.
  12. I absolutely loved this miniseries. I never read the novel, but am definitely going to now. The characters were so rich and interesting. Olive was so fascinating. I understood why she was the way she was. She was cold, yes, but she really wasn't that awful. She did care about people. She cared about that student and his mother, and the well being of both of them. She appreciated smart people, like that boy and the teacher she was having the emotional affair with. She was a depressed person that was married to an eternal optimist, and I can see how that could really grate on someone after awhile. I absolutely loathed her son, who was cruel, flaky, selfish and an asshole. Seriously- your father is in a nursing home with your mother being the only one who comes to see, comfort and do additional care for him daily, and you want her to come out to visit you to help with your new pregnant wife, and her two children from previous relationships, one of whom is an absolute terror? That is the height of selfishness right there. And I'm not one for corporal punishment, but I would have slapped that kid too. He was going to rip her dress, and he wasn't getting any kind of reprimand from his parents. Not only that, he was being rewarded for his poor behavior. And equating a slap on the hand to his wife's mom's alcoholism? Ugh. What a nightmare. And her being there meant that she wasn't there when her husband passed away. Another reason for me to dislike him. As much as I loathed Bill Murray's character being a right wing homophobe, I did think it was kind of sweet at the end how they connected. They were both very broken, sad, lonely people who could bond over their failings and the loss of their spouses that they knew they weren't so kind to. They kind of left it up in the air, but I was left with the idea that Bill Murray's character would try to contact his estranged daughter, and that Olive would reach out to her douchebag son regarding the birth of her first grandchild.
  13. I know that Melissa McBride is nearly 50, but I think that she looks about ten years younger than that. And she's really, really hot. I'm 28, so this is a bit of a ways off, but when I start going grey, I'm seriously cutting my hair the way that she does. It's a really cute and flattering style, and it doesn't make her look "old" at all.
  14. SissyFrank, I feel bad liking your post, but I just want to give you a big hug. I am a victim of childhood sexual abuse too, by a couple of different people. I spoke out the first time, and it wasn't taken seriously by the authorities. So when it happened again and again, I didn't speak out because I had no trust or faith that anything would happen to my abusers. One of them was my brother's best friend, and I knew that my brother would kill him if I said anything, and I didn't want him to end up in prison. I am so sorry this happened to you and that you have lost your family over this. I never watched this show, but have been following this thread because of this awful news. The whole situation just makes me ill. I will never understand the thought process behind choosing a convicted pedophile lover over your own child. These people are absolute scum.
  15. I was like a woman in Texas! I had no choice! Man, Comedy Bang! Bang! has been on a role lately, and this episode was chock full of one liners. This may be my favorite season since the first. I'm even looking forward to next week, despite Dane Cook being the guest.
  16. I wish that John would have elaborated a little more on Leland Yee. He was not only involved in arms trafficking, he was a fucking gun control advocate before all of that. So he is a gigantic hypocrite to top it all off.
  17. I would like it to be William Shatner as his character Denny Crane from "Boston Legal." Then he could blame the entire outbreak on mad cow.
  18. I have a question. I have no religion, and do not believe in an afterlife. However, for people who do, particularly those on the show, I wonder about the concept of souls. Are the souls trapped inside of the walkers until someone takes them out with a blow to the brain, or do they go off to the great beyond and their bodies reanimate without them? Probably a stupid question, and I hope I don't offend anyone, but I am curious as to anyone's thoughts on the situation.
  19. Not to mention, moonshine is rancid. I drank some at a party a few years ago, and I couldn't get past a single swallow. It tastes horrible and it burns all the way down. It is called "fire water" for a reason.
  20. Aww, thanks guys. A little bit of levity was brought to the situation when we were trying to identify the source of the odor, and my brother's then girlfriend walked into my bedroom. She ran out and yelled, and I quote, "Mindy, that turtle is dead. It isn't even alive." I was laughing so hard at that statement that I couldn't even cry over poor Gunther's untimely death.
  21. When I was fourteen, my family went on vacation to Myrtle Beach for a week. My pet turtle Gunther died some time at the beginning of that week, and I came home to the smell of rotting dead turtle stinking up not only my bedroom, but the entire house. The smell lingered for weeks, no matter how much we tried to air it out, and no matter what candles we burned. I can only imagine the smell of rotting human beings wandering around buildings and everywhere else would smell like, if poor Gunther smelled that bad.
  22. I guess I can understand why, from his character's perspective, he did it in that moment. His world seemed to be crashing down on him. However, that does not, in any way, excuse what he did. It was a horrible, evil thing. He knew exactly what the Commodore was going to do to her, and he allowed it to happen. Maybe the Commodore would have found someone else to procure Gillian, maybe not. Who knows? But it was still sick and evil, and it was his downfall. For me, Nucky was never the star of the show. As much as I love Steve Buscemi as an actor, the character just didn't do it for me. That's not his fault, it's the fault of the writing. I didn't like Jimmy at all either, and was glad when he was killed off. I loved the ensemble. Richard, Chalky, Van Alden, Eddie, Margaret when she wasn't being self-righteous- those were the people that kept me coming back. I did enjoy Nucky the most when he was with Sally, because she was someone who seemed to be on equal footing with him, and I really appreciated that.
  23. I believe that to be a home health aid, all you need is your STNA/CNA license. (It depends on what they call them in your state.) My wife is a CNA at a nursing home, but she is also in a BSN program, and planning to get her masters to become a CRNA. The downside with being a home health aid is that you can't stay certified that way, and have to continue to get re-certified every couple of years, unlike people who work in hospitals and nursing homes. (Or at least that's how it is in Ohio and Michigan.) I felt really bad for that plaintiff, and was glad that he was so well spoken and had everything documented. He presented his case well, and that defendant was a piece of human garbage, disabled or not. I am also someone who is a hard stick. I've been in and out of the hospital for my long list of health problems since I was fourteen, and my veins are completely shot. If the nurse can't get the IV in after two sticks, and they typically can't, they bring in the ultrasound machine, or bring in a nurse that knows how to operate the ultrasound to look for veins for IVs. Not all nurses are trained for that. That's what any kind, compassionate, understanding nurse would do. They're not going to keep sticking you like you're a voodoo doll, and they're certainly not going to become aggressive and straddle you. What she did to that patient, especially considering that she was nonverbal at the time, was unconscionable. I believed every last word that came out of those defendant's mouths. They had no reason to lie, and they weren't even countersuing. She deserves to lose her license for that.
  24. Which is funny because English is a bastard language itself.
  25. I really was not a fan of Cig's entire life knight. I thought the blue and white paint on it looked really awful, and the makeup was terrible. He should have kept Rashaad's face that he sculpted. As much as I loved Dina's pieces and wanted her to win, I did think that Drew had a slight edge over hers. His really looked phenomenal. Still, I am so happy with her win, as she had my favorite looks of the season, and is one of my favorite contestants of all of the seasons on this show.
