S02.E18: 30 Years of Science Down the Tubes

Yes, this is how some species of animals have survived diseases that have wiped out large swaths of the population, when those that have the immunity are the ones that breed, the offspring tend to have the immunity as well. -
Sorry Free, I was being Facetious there. Once the case of the week gets resolved we have: Weller gets promoted by the director, and the director fires Jane and closes her case <New York Establishing Shot> Jane and Weller make out in the locker room, Weller gets phone call about his dad <New York Establishing Shot> Jane looks at the rest of the team laughing with their bourbon, decides to take sad walk home <New York Establishing Shot> Mayfair's investigation leads her to Navy Seal hideout <New York Establishing Shot> Weller with Dad at the hospital All the serial story-lines get jammed into the last 10-12 minutes of the show

This episode really needed another epilogue or four to the main crime story,

S05.E21: Wedding Eve / S05.E22: Landing Gear

Shallow comment, but Zooey Deschenel was definitely rocking the "flaunt it" dress at the wedding. -
I love the effort he puts in. Seriously, he was in every bit except the Cold Open (and last time he hosted he WAS in the Cold Open). I was hoping the Disneyland employee would come back as his recurring bit (in the wrapping-ville sense) I still watch that one from time to time the way he and Nasim play off each other is fantastic, and you can actually feel his energy coming through the screen. The thing is you don't even have to play up the "cultural differences" angle every time. You could go with a completely disinterested teen (something that could be in Sasheer's wheelhouse) the overly enthusiastic but incapable Dad (Bobby), or a Leslie, "don't tell me what to do" character. It was a good workmanlike show with another very good Update. But none of the sketches hit the highs of Disneyland, Resolution Revolution, or Rappers before they were stars for me.

So good! I'm willing to hand wave a bit of the fuel issue. I'll assume it can last longer when properly stored in large containers as opposed to jerry cans...because surface area and what not... This was probably one of Melissa's strongest episodes and Gail was very on point too. Mary Steenburgen straight up knocks it out of the park. -
It's like they shoplifted a bunch of vibrators. A good show for character development of Selina. I tend to agree with the notions out there that the Nevada news didn't set her off in itself, but it peeled back the scab just enough for her to come to terms with the fact that her mother truly was dead now. I wasn't a huge fan of how the recount news played out, though there were some fantasic lines/visuals coming from it. I would have thought Kent would have identified the nature of the votes when they determined which districts they were from, and I can't believe it would be enough to swing the popular vote, unless they were truly neck and neck.

S03.E04: Maleant Data Systems Solutions

I liked seeing this version of Laurie. Very little eccentric behavior, she didn't take Jack's shit, and she acted rationally on all fronts. While Jack was pushing a short term windfall, which would make sense for him given his position, he obviously wasn't willing to gamble on the long term. And the monetized value represented too much to Laurie in that instance, but once freed from it, she kicked some ass. It will be interesting to see who decides to fill that empty chair. I was half expecting Laurie to state that she would be acting CEO. I think it would be hilarious if Jared got the position, as he doesn't seem to have a need to fill with the engineers if there is proper management in place. Big head continuing to fail up in fantastic too. I can't wait for one of his incubator apps to hit. The whole Erlich interaction was great right from "Where is this place?... Because I want to send the owner a gift basket obviously!" -
You know what would be brave territory for a show that likes to push boundaries... Dealing with a miscarriage and the effect that it has on a family unit with kids who are old enough to be well aware of everything. Taking us through the typical aspects of them preparing for this change and then dealing with the after effects and coping would be right up there with the Police Violence episode in my opinion.

Lainey walking into the restaurant.... Barry, you truly are punching above your weight. Also, I enjoyed end tag where the actors were naturally reacting. But the combination of this and some elements of the behind the scenes episode a few weeks back in such close proximity is a little odd. It's almost as if they are reacting to some accusation of in-fighting among the cast, which I haven't heard anything about.

I'm pretty sure Mayfair's team is racking up kills faster than any law enforcement agency since the first year of the 5-0 Task Force out in Hawaii. I'm not sure what the public would be more outraged about. The sheer number of thwarted near terrorist attacks or the fact that there's an FBI team out of New York killing people by the morgue-full

The movie was pretty much what I was expecting. Glad to see something new and fresh, and it definitely called back to the Beverly Hills Cop style of comedy. Mostly I'm always stoked to see people go out and get their thing made. Plus, more roles for Jason Mitchell is always a good thing.

I felt like in X2 they tried to give the Storm character opportunities to display leadership. Her interactions with Nightcrawler and leading the evacuation in the midst of Cyclops' trauma was evidence of that. But Halle Berry really didn't seem to want to run with that. I'm pretty sure her first scenes shot were the ones at the Mansion in X-men. She seemed genuinely pleased there, both before and after all the action. Everything else in the series was show up and collect a paycheque type roles. I got the impression that Singer and Marsden had ideas for how to use Cyclops. In the commentary for X2 they talk about how Marsden came up with the fight sequence in the prison when the guard keeps him from being able to activate his visor. However, there was obviously studio notes that were meant for him to be the preppy foil to Wolverine. The N*Sync CD in his RX-7 in X2 being the most egregious example.

S41.E19: Brie Larson / Alicia Keys

She definitely does some of the best character work on the show. The fact that she can go from the straight character put upon housewife in commercials (Nestpresso, Totinos, and Aron's List all come to mind) to her Kids characters, to something like Santa Baby is great. Between Laura and her Ivanka she hit some good beats this episode. Sasheer, poor Sasheer. For someone who's a proper stand up she's always seemed a little off at the Update Desk doing her bits. Here's hoping Drake can get the best out of her like he did with her first episode. -
S03.E03: Meinertzhagen's Haversack

That will be so delicious if it is all a bigger ruse, but I won't project too much, I'll just be setting myself up for disappointment. I do enjoy it all at face value, these guys who are all so brilliant at their corner of the world, and have the vision, but can't get past the bureaucracy and really their own incompetence in the social world. I mean if you think of the company as Richard's and everything in the space as the company. Richard literally tripped over his own hose (dick pun) in attempting to kick off this master plan. -
The Karen reveal was so perfect. As soon as she appeared I was laughing knowing how this was all meant to play out. While I get that Amy's interaction with her pre-court room was necessary to re-establish Karen's nature and tendencies, I think it would have been even stronger to just have her stand up in the court room, open her mouth, then Selina turns off whatever monitor she's keeping tabs of all of this on, and says "Okay, that's dealt with, what's next?"

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. Title wise, the Civil War is a sequel to Winter Soldier. I'm not sure how Winter Soldier thumbed its nose at the rest of the MCU except Avengers 1. The whole premise is based on Hydra growing within SHIELD following Operation Paperclip, which is set up through the events of The First Avenger. Project Insight is the culmination of Fury's distrust of Alien Threat started by Thor 1 and carried through The Avengers and Thor 2. And Pierce references that Iron Man is the most popular of all the Avengers (he would like him to swing by his nephew's birthday party) which given Tony's flare for showmanship started from his Press Conference, and the events of Iron Man 2 make sense. At the end of the Winter Soldier, Cap also establishes that he's going to look for Bucky in a very off the Grid sense after Natasha gets him the files. He enlists Sam to help with this, but knows not to cast the net any larger. He believes he's the only one that can engage with Bucky peacefully without causing a bigger issue. That's shown to be the case in Civil War. Sam's even shown to be keeping the search on the DL in Age of Ultron at the party. I think it's safe to assume that no one, outside of Sam and Natasha, who is afflicted by her own demons these days, understands the Bucky/Cap relationship and its complexities. Overall, I felt the movie built on what we have seen from the MCU thus far. Steve and Tony have always had this very tenuous relationship. Tony exhibits signs of resentment for the love that his father had for Steve. Steve knows he can't trust Tony. But they've supported each other and had each other's backs when it mattered most.
-
Tony's relationship with his father has always been somewhat complex, but he appeared to have full love for his Mother that he hasn't really dealth with. His words are "He killed my Mom." I'm sure had it just been Howard that The Winter Soldier killed, Tony would have begrudgingly held back. But seeing his mother, innocent and loving in his eyes, killed for no reason beyond being a passenger in the car Howard was in sent him over the tipping point.

Pretty vanilla, middle of the road episode for me. It wasn't as bad as some of the real clunkers (and one absolute Monorail wreck), but nothing particularly noteworthy. But at least we are at a point now where we can rely on Weekend Update to be good if the rest of show is dragging. -
Gale's attempts to describe the drone were fantastic. I was laughing too much I definitely missed some, but one was something along the lines of a Submarine flying with four hair dryers.
-
I would have bought Steve's relationship with Sharon a bit more if she'd at least had some passing purpose in Age of Ultron to keep her character at the fore front. The way it was revealed here, Steve doesn't see her from the events of Winter Soldier to Peggy's funeral, where he finds out she's related to the last person he's ever carried a candle for. Then they kiss? Felt more weird than long overdue to me. All in all I did really like it. Like most marvel movies, it doesn't need to be seen in 3D and I find that actually detracts from it. But in the theaters with reserved seating, it's always in 3D. I'll likely go see it in a couple weeks in 2D to let everything settle, and pick up on all the little things, like trying to watch both May and Tony when Peter's talking with them. This is safely in my Tier 1 MCU movies with Guardians, Iron Man, Winter Solider, and The Avengers. The little nits I have would have made it really drag.

Nobody sets themselves up for more fuck ups than Selena, but her ability to manage the crisis when it hits is always first rate. Directing the whole operation from a screen in her Limo? Sublime.

I'm sure Furlong is the perfect example of a congressman loved by his district and loathed everywhere else!

Papa Schmidt's storytelling at Dinner was fantastic. Nick's "tricking" CeCe into texting Reagan was equally fantastic. -
S03.E19: Failed Experiments
Traveller519 replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Australian Gambit revealing everything to May was a good exercise in exposition for our good guys. Rather than have the big bad reveal his master plan, and underling gets duped into spilling the beans. I really like that Daisy's "brainwashing" is her exercise what she believes to be enlightenment and free will. She has her previous memories, but is more consumed by her vision. It isn't Loki's scepter type mind control. The discussion between her and Mac was very real, and you understood that she had rationalized her position. The host body that Fitz killed was dying on a planet without more resources. The Ward version of Hive appears to be in peak condition finally and much more difficult to kill. Lash, on this whole, "filling a need," idea of balance will most likely be the one to kill Hive.
