  1. Glad to have the show back as I like all the characters. It was a bit funny to see SNL's prediction of CBS going to "Prestige Comedies" partially play out with the Miscarriage plot.
  2. If you can find it, possibly via HBO go, I highly recommend going and checking out Bored to Death. Ted Danson has the deadpan dialed up to 11, while also blending in the silly. The breakneck pace continues. I'll be disappointed if both Eleanor's get to stay in the good place because Arizona Eleanor sacrifices herself for Good Eleanor, totally redeeming herself, only because it's way to predictable.
  3. Rather than ragging on it in every episode thread. I wanted to address the Erica/Geoff Schwartz in its entirety. This arc feels like it's sucking the life out of one of my favorite sitcoms. It seems odd to me because both of the Adam/Dana and Barry/Lainey relationships felt really good and echoed a lot of what we've probably all experienced in our real lives. The friend who suddenly seems like something more, and the person who you may not have expected but seems to work for whatever reason. I believe it was Season 1 where we had an emotional teenage Erica dealing with the misery of a break-up with the Eldest Kremp, a jock persona who certainly seemed to fit with the popular image Erica wished to portray. After that we got a long string of Erica developing a lot as a character with a bit of the freedom of not being as constrained by the other characters as tied to so closely to real people. But it was always her character independent of any romantic relationships. Then last year we started to get this pining from Geoff, and an examination of the potential chemistry between the two of them. There seemed to be this, "Hey, how should we get Erica into a relationship issue among the writers. The worst part of this is how drawn out it has been. We're sacrificing other character development trying to create this situation that I think was meant to show growth and vulnerability in Erica. But has instead come off as this really unsympathetic sad sack character. At least that's my take. I searched @adamfgoldbergs's Twitter mentions for Erica, and evidently there are a large number of viewers who disagree with me, and think that the pairing of the two is the ultimate direction for the show. I guess if there are fans that do want it, there's a very real possibility that's what is going to play out. I just can't help but feel it's not going to be this explosively romantic reveal the writers and some fans seem to believe.
  4. Very True. Community did concept episodes better than just about anyone
  5. I'm all for the Ric Dotcom episodes. The show is much in need of some levity, and Rich delivers. I'm all good if he's Blindspot's Sang Min or Pontiac Bandit. This team needs to sit down and have an honesty circle. Everybody's working with about 40% truth at this point. Maybe they can all do it in their underwear, that seemed to work last week.
  6. Charlie is just fantastic, poor Eustace though! I was starting to worry Junior was going to slip into a pretty bad depression.
  7. I hate that I have to agree, as this has been one of my favourite sitcoms of the past few years, but man has the air come out this year. Barry and Erica who were two of the shows real strengths the past two seasons (and Erica especially last season) have just cratered, with the Geoff Schwartz storyline being this gas fire sucking a lot of the oxygen out of the rest of the show. Last week's episode felt like the strongest, and I think it's because there was no Geoff story to deal with. The worst part is I feel like they've written themselves into a hole, especially with Bev's dumb Yenta card a few weeks back. The show is at its best when the characters are doing something to chase down their passion, and I did enjoy Bev "Misery-ing" Adam, and Pops being at the all women's book club. Pops and Murray were strong support this episode, but lets get Erica something better to do.
  8. Terrific! The 7th layer indeed! It was great to flush out that extra side of these two who have been pretty two dimensional as we interact them exclusively through the other members of the group. We get to see that extra bit of humanity that grounds the core characters so well. It'll be polarizing, just as the Rafi and Dirty Randy episodes for the League were, but I thought this worked much better by taking a look at what makes two characters who appear to be polar opposites but actually share very similar experiences as a result of their wives inherent characters and awfulness. It's frustrating that we have to rely on the quality short run shows like this to take these risks. How many 22 episode network shows could benefit from this sort of episode?
  9. I'm able to put on my suspend my disbelief for the majority of the show to enjoy it. But the gasoline thing is tough to ignore since they specifically addressed it last season when Phil explained to the group that it wouldn't keep when it started turning chunky. But they haven't addressed that since and have done their fair share of driving.
  10. So is that all the ghosts now besides Lucy gone? I feel like it was her plus 4, right? One they got when they first investigated the lab. But I think Robbie only got an additional two here. The one he got with his chain and one with his grab.
  11. YTW fans! I've nominated Jimmy's Fake Mustache over in the KODTVTM. It's taking a drubbing. Head over and show your support!
  12. I was referring to the the two "stand-ins" he let die in the electric chairs in the warehouse. Lee seems to practice whatever medicine de jour is required, and Valerie looks to be a newspaper reporter. In completely unrelated thoughts... Though Robin Lord Taylor is openly gay and speaks quite eloquently about it, especially growing up in Iowa, I like how he's playing Penguin as almost asexual. His emotions for Ed are love, basically the same love he felt for his mother which would be the only other love we've really seen him emote. Perhaps briefly Fish early on, or his father last season. That's what's going to make it so much more terrifying when his love for Ed goes unrequited. And we all know how stable Ed can be when he's pushed over the line.
  13. I certainly think that's a big part of it. But as wendy says above, it's that his interactions with peopleare largely though books. He's always left a little bit of a buffer between him and other people via literature.
  14. Come on, Jim. If you have to make a choice between saving a pediatrician and a news anchor, that's a pretty obvious choice to make.
  15. Oh Tandy. He can't help himself. There was some great absurdest stuff here. I echoed Lewis's largest frustration with the song being, "what's the connection!" and the random Patio Furniture Store in the middle of nowhere.
  16. "That kid is going to be fine, because that kid is a Hanks!" I guess if Tom is refusing to acknowledge Chet Haze is a thing, none of the rest of us need to either.
  17. Bryan Callen was performing in my hometown (Calgary) this weekend. He put on a great show as usual. His stand-up is kind of like Coach Mellor on uppers. At any rate he ended up at the bar some friends and I went to after the show. Not having anything clever to really say, I just cheers-ed him and said "Goldbergs Feel Hard" got a soft chuckle and thanks out of him.
  18. "You see! She already knows her A B Janets!" The tight episodes are great, there really hasn't been much for filler
  19. I have a bit of a different take than most. I liked the Lindsay/Paul story more than the Gretchen one. The Gretchen one was completely predictable and bordering on cliche. Lindsay and Paul's had stuff I did not expect and genuinely made me laugh. Specifically the reading of the community bulletin and news while she was having sex with Raoule. Then the trying to talk himself into being a cuck as "our fetish."
  20. I think Jimmy's response hits his beats pretty accurately though. In Jimmy's mind he has everything together. He's in control of his actions and his emotions, but when something picks at him, he comes really unglued rather quickly, usually in an almost obsessive manner. Jimmy was all to aware of the emotional response and kept trying to avoid it, but there was in-surmounting emotion building. I do agree that the crying was a bit cliche, but I don't know how else they could have played the honesty of the emotion.
  21. Thankfully Jemma has come a long way with her lying since season 1. I'm sure she's got the test.
  22. I looked him and his credits up too. It's funny because he's definitely been in other things that I've watched (most notably as the exasperated counter clerk at the Frozen Yogurt shop Gretchen and Lindsay occasionally go to in "You're the Worst".
  23. This was definitely my favourite episode of the season, and the most I've felt good with Jess in a long time. They addressed the issue, but she was completely reasonable about approaching the nick situation and wasn't succumbing to prat falls or other groan worthy behaviour. Cece was fantastic dealing with both Jess and Schmidt. It's cute to see how her attitude towards Schmidt has gone from tolerance to acceptance to outright love. To save money on car batteries and wire coils!
  24. These are always great, even if you can see the outcome coming from a ways out. I really liked the way Gina was played in this one too. Though I'm a fan of her typically, because she brings something different to the ensemble. It was fun to see the earnestness beneath all of the bravado that we've only had glimpses of before. Her walking back "this is just like segregation" was a fun bit of emotion we don't normally see from her.
  25. Regarding the language in porn issue, I would just assume the language is auto-cleansed like when the individuals try to curse. And now I'm laughing at how absurd that would sound: "Fork my patsy, fork my patsy, fork my patsy! Yeahhhhhh!" "You like that drip, bench?"
